This Master's degree is designed for students who wish to practice across a broad range environmental engineering and apply new sustainable risk management strategies for complex environmental problems. Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering has been traditionally referred to as public health engineering in the United Kingdom. In this postgraduate course, the technical aspects of both natural and engineering environmental systems will be covered. There will be broad interdisciplinary subjects synthesizing knowledge from a wide spectrum of science and engineering, expanding the content of public health engineering, which in the UK has traditionally been responsible for developing the infrastructure for managing water and waste.

Students will develop engineering skills and be able to design, develop and apply concepts for water and waste as a resource based on environmental sensitivity and be competent in planning, modelling, design, construction, operations, maintenance and control of both engineered and natural water and earth resources.

Students who select this postgraduate programme will gain a skill set that will enable them to progress in the fields of:

- Environmental engineering
- Desalination and water reuse
- Water resources engineering
- Hydraulics and hydrology
- Environmental fluid hydraulics
- Environmental remediation

The MSc in Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering will incorporate solid waste management, contaminated land treatment and the use of geographic information systems (GIS) with emphasis on management of the earth's resources.

The programme will explain the relationship between different earth resources including hydrosystems, both 'engineered' - hydro-power plants, water/wastewater treatment plants, sewers - and 'natural' - rivers, lakes, wetlands, irrigation districts, reservoirs etc., solid wastes, brownfield land, and geo-derived primary resources and their sustainable management.

Teaching and learning

The number of contact hours (e.g. lectures, seminars and feedback on assignments) per module/course ranges from 50-75 hours for the one year full time programme or roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module. The expected self-study time is approximately 80-90 hours per module per year (roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module).

You will be taught by academics with a range of industrial and academia experience for each module.

Assessment

Project work, assignments and laboratory exercises in addition to substantial written examination of course materials will occur in most modules. The Environmental Engineering Research Project will require submission of a substantial final report/dissertation. Assessment of this module will involve participation in a poster and seminar presentation and a final oral examination.

Professional recognition

Accreditation will be sought from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and The Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) including the Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and Institute of Highway Engineers.

Career options

Postgraduate students from this programme will find such employment opportunities as engineers, scientist and technical managers in the private sector (engineering design firms, engineering consultancy, project management, risk management and waste management), in the public sector (environmental protection engineering, regulations and standards, local government) and in non-governmental sectors (NGOs, environmental advocacy) or may wish to pursue further qualifications such as a PhD within the Faculty of Engineering and Science at the University of Greenwich to become even more specialised. This MSc course addresses scientific, technological and legislative aspects of the diagnosis (analysis and assessment) and management (remediation and restoration) of important environmental issues concerned with contaminated land, water quality, air pollution and waste.

It has been designed with industry advice to enable good science and engineering graduates begin and advance successful careers in the environmental sector, and pursue postgraduate scientific research. The MSc is delivered in first-class teaching and research facilities by a dedicated team of internationally renowned environmental scientists, and presents considerable interaction with environmental consultancies and engineers, industry, local and regulatory authorities, and research institutes.

During 2007-2011, the course was supported by 6 NERC studentships, the most awarded annually to an environmental MSc. Students on the course have won the most EMpower research projects funded by companies within the nuclear industry, and since 2008, a Prize for Best Performance Overall has been awarded annually by Arup, a global environmental engineering and consultancy company.

Covers: sources, sinks, dispersion, conversion, monitoring, impacts and management of air pollutants with study visits to a local authority and a government research institute.

- Royal Holloway Campus Air Quality Case Study
Involves a consultancy company-style investigation of ambient and indoor air quality within the confines of RHUL campus; and combines desk-top research with practical fieldwork and laboratory analysis.

- Waste Management & Utilisation
Considers municipal, industrial and radioactive waste management options, with study visits to a landfill site, a waste incinerator, composting facility, recycling centre and nuclear power station.

- Independent Research Project
Consists of a four-month, independent scientific investigation, usually in collaboration with environmental consultants and engineers, local and regulatory authorities, industry, research institutes, and universities. Projects may comprise a desk-top study or practical laboratory and field investigation, they may be funded, and often lead to employment or to PhD research. Final results are presented at the Research Project Symposium to an audience from within the environmental sector

On completion of the course graduates will have acquired the experience, knowledge, and critical understanding to enable them to:

- Conduct themselves as professional environmental research scientists, consultants, and managers, convey in a professional manner, scientific, technical and managerial information, and manage projects and resources efficiently

- Apply quality assured sampling strategies, preparation procedures and analytical systems to quantify health risks posed by inorganic and organic pollutant linkages in soils, waters and air

- Apply statistical analysis, geographical information systems, and environmental impact and risk assessment to the interpretation of environmental data

Course modules:

The course recognises the need for an integrated approach to pollution control. It acknowledges the links between pollution of air, water and land, and proposes that an integrated approach minimises damage to the environment. The mode of delivery is studentcentred distance learning, with regular tutorial days, allowing access to professional training while in full-time employment.

The course begins by establishing fundamental knowledge of water and air quality and the associated techniques of pollution control. It continues by providing fundamental knowledge of waste management and associated techniques, and concludes with integrated pollution prevention control and investigating how the three major pollution areas affect each other.

This course focuses on UK and European legislation and techniques suitable for a temperate climate. Four core modules are studied, each one is worth 30 credits. These are:

•Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC)
•Waste
•Air
•Water

The course concludes with a project (60 credits), which is an opportunity to engage in a critical reflection on an area of policy or practice. Recent topics include; compliance with environmental legislation when working in and around water courses
during utility industry construction, installing a grey water recycling system, an investigation into the impact of new statistical guidance for contaminated land assessment, and a framework for modernising legislation affecting waste management on the Isle of Man.

Teaching and Assessment:

You are encouraged to attend an induction session at the start of the course – these days allow you to meet key members of staff and familiarise yourself with studying by distance learning. The course operates on a rolling, modular basis and you join when a new module commences. The majority of the course material is delivered via distance learning modules.

Each module is based on a 15 week study timetable, although you can extend the study block to allow flexibility within a fixed framework. You are actively encouraged to attend day tutorials for the Air, Water, Waste and IPPC modules. The course is assessed through the completion of post-tests and assignments at the end of each module. You will also complete a practical project and undertake an oral exam.

Expertise:

Practitioners are employed as tutors for the various modules, ensuring that you receive a blend of theory and practical real world experience that is directly applicable to the working environment.

The course is managed by the Postgraduate and Continued Professional Development (CPD) Office, a specialist department with over 15 years’ experience of supporting distance learning students.

About this course

This is a creative programme that addresses human intervention strategies towards problem-solving in the real world, on examples such as flood defence, through the processes involved in decision-making at local authorities. This will be achieved by linking with external organisations to include practical experience through field and laboratory work, and practitioner training through placements.
Aspects of contaminated land will include legislation and regulation, identification, analysis and remediation, and human health exposure assessment through a case study approach using research informed teaching, as well as practitioner training. Within the water aspects of our course, you will focus on the environmental monitoring and assessment of freshwater, legislation and regulatory aspects, management of freshwater towards prevention and control of contamination, drinking water quality and human health, and a focus on flood defence.

A number of factors ensure you are prepared for the workforce you will seek to join on completion of the programme; these include placement experience with employers, and field and laboratory skills. Additionally, the course is currently undergoing accreditation with the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES), meaning students could be studying on a professional body accredited course with free student membership of the professional body and eligibility to apply for higher levels of membership upon completion.

Face-to-face delivery of modules and placements will aid your development of transferrable soft leadership and management, and communication skills required to meet the demands of current employers. Most of our student employment will be within collaborative and multi-disciplinary teams. These problems include the presence of micropollutants in drinking water, noxious aerosols and fumes in the air, heavy metals and toxic organics in solid wastes that will eventually overwhelm our landfill sites. The scarcity of water resources, the ever-deteriorating air quality in many metropolises, the threat of mounting volumes of waste without suitable disposal sites, and a long list of other critical issues must be resolved through the innovations of scientists and engineers.

Environmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary issues. These issues include the physical process of mixing and dilution, chemical and biological processes, mathematical modeling, data acquisition and measurement. The Environmental Engineering (EVNG) Program offered by the School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is one of the most successful interdisciplinary research programs in this field of study. The facilities of the Environmental Engineering Laboratories are divided into standard instruments and advanced stationary equipment, as required for different environmental studies. Standard instruments can provide accurate measurements of routine environmental analyses, such as DO, pH, COD, BOD5, ORP, salinity, conductivity, and turbidity.

Advanced equipment includes: a FTIR system with MIR and DTGS detectors for the analyses of functional groups in solid or non-aqueous liquid samples, total organic halogen with ion chromatography system to measure the amount of TOX in liquid or solid samples, UV/Vis spectrophotometer for measuring absorbance or transmittance of liquid samples, florescence spectrometer for analyzing luminescence samples, programmable tube furnace with three control zones for various degree of combustion of different materials, and BET system for the characterization of surface area and pore volume of solid samples.

A relevant central facility is the Material Characterization and Preparation Facility comprising 10 main research groups: surface science, electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, x-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, thin film deposition, optical characterization, electrical and magnetic characterization, thermal analysis, and sample preparation. Each research group houses state-of-the-art multidisciplinary instrumentation, supported by a team of experienced staff. Three of the core four teaching staff are Environmental Health Practitioners who bring many combined years of experience gained working across local government, public health, health promotion, private consultancy, advocacy and specialist divisions of the Health Protection Agency (Chemical Hazards and Poisons Division and health emergency planning) to equip you with specialist knowledge and skills that are at the forefront of the subject.

Our staff are research-active and hold advanced degrees in complimentary subjects (e.g. environmental engineering and sustainable development, and public health) and memberships to professional organisations (including the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, Emergency Planning Society, etc.) to ensure they are aware of the latest trends, research and developments within this field.

Teaching And Assessment

This course is focused upon the five core CIEH subject areas: food safety, housing and health, health and safety, environmental protection and public health.

Delivering an excellent postgraduate experience you will be offered the opportunity to question and reflect on how the world around us can impact on public health, whilst developing the skills and knowledge necessary to understand these risks and how to intervene and manage them effectively.

Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops. You will also participate in debates, discussion and critiques of academic papers, field trips, case study scenarios and general discussions of academic and ethical issues.
