The international food supply industry requires high calibre graduates with an understanding of how food can be preserved throughout the distribution chain to ensure the supply of safe, wholesome food. Research has identified that food business priorities focus on increasing marketing, developing new products and investing in new machinery. This course prepares you for a career within the food sector, specialising in food product development, food consumer marketing or retailing roles.

The course is designed to ensure you graduate ready to help food businesses develop. As the food industry grows worldwide, so does the need for staff who demonstrate functional knowledge and skills in combination with managerial and leadership capability. Food organisations need well qualified managers to develop, commercialise and deliver their products to the marketplace efficiently and effectively. This course gives you the skills and experience to meet this need.

You build your knowledge of food processing and safety, product development, marketing and the food chain. You also have opportunities to develop managerial skills, practical skills and behaviour change theories relevant to the food sector.

The work-related learning module gives you a valuable insight into the roles of process or product development technologists, or product account technologists, and the importance of continuing professional development. It also allows you to practically apply the skills you learn during the course.

The placement is an additional opportunity for you to develop your practical skills, either in the UK or abroad. You are supported in securing a placement through a series of employability workshops offered by specialist academic staff. Assessment

The programme involves a taught and a project component. The taught programme is assessed by a mixture of coursework assignments throughout the year, and by examinations in May and June.

Once these are completed, students then work full time on the Marketing Report. This provides an opportunity to apply the techniques and insights presented in the programme and apply them to a particular problem area.

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Programme Structure

The MSc degree in Marketing is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months. The programme is divided into two 11-week semesters of taught content, and the summer period, where you can choose between a research dissertation and the practice track. The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. After graduating, you can choose to continue your studies with the CIM and, with appropriate employment experience in a marketing related role, gain full member status (MCIM) and become a Chartered Marketer.

Small group teaching reinforced by core seminar sessions is something you will not find everywhere. You will have the opportunity to learn from guest speakers and participate in industry placements and field trips.

In addition, we have close partnership with industry and companies to provide industry experiences and reflective learning.
