Deriving value from waste and promoting a transition to a circular economy is one of the greatest challenges of the current generation. We cannot keep taking, using and throwing away valuable materials.
This project offers the opportunity to gain a Masters qualification working in collaboration with a leading recycling company. Understanding gained through this project will be much in demand as manufacturers and retailers seek innovative new ways to recover material from waste streams. The project degree fees are sponsored, and you are paid a stipend whilst undertaking the research.
WRAP data (2012) suggests 85% of UK mattresses end up in landfill. This is not sustainable. Mattress collection and recycling is labour intensive, due to variable design and the heterogeneous nature of post-consumer feedstock. This project seeks to identify and optimise engineering approaches capable of delivering improvements in mattress reuse/recycling/recovery rates. The emphasis is to recover value or convert waste materials into products which have a real market value.
Working with academics in the Engineering department and in collaboration with the company, you will use experimental and analytical engineering skills to investigate novel approaches for the processing and re-use of mattress materials. Graduates with an interest in sustainability and at least an upper second-class degree in Chemical/Process, Materials, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline are encouraged to apply for the project.

The applicability of Council Directive 93/13/EEC of 5 April 1993 on unfair terms in consumer contracts in mortgage enforcement proceedings in Ireland.
To determine whether, under Directive 93/13 (“the directive”), the Irish courts have been assessing, of their own motion, whether a contractual term falling within the scope of the directive is unfair, thereby addressing the imbalance which exists between the mortgagor and mortgagee; and to determine whether an applicant in mortgage enforcement proceedings can rely upon Irish legislation, the common law rules of contract and rules of procedure, to secure possession of a mortgaged property in cases where the directive is applicable.
interviews with applicants and respondents in mortgage enforcement proceedings in relation to their knowledge of the applicability of the directive in respect of the proceedings in question and the extent to which their legal advisers and the courts/masters have been willing to entertain submissions based on the directive.

Taught courses are assessed by a wide array of techniques from the traditional (such as examinations, coursework assessments and laboratory work) to the innovative: students are expected to produce a portfolio of research skills upon completion of their degree.
