This has resulted in a wide variety of responses at the firm level, from foreign investments with the aim of securing resources to corporate social responsibility strategies. At the more aggregate level, analysts have been questioning the growth imperative (cf. Occupy Wall Street, Degrowth) - is growth obsolete?

Evaluate policies and firm strategies towards development and sustainable resource use:
In the 'Sustainability and Growth' track, you will learn how to analyze the sources of economic growth in a country or region, the barriers to growth and development they face, and the possible negative consequences of growth. You will be trained to evaluate policies and firm strategies towards development and sustainable resource use.

The track is closely linked to the Tilburg Sustainability Center, a multidisciplinary research and policy advise institute.

In these courses, you will learn how to evaluate people’s willingness to pay for environmental improvements, and how to measure the effectiveness of structural reform policies. You will write policy proposals regarding inequality and growth, educational policies, and innovation strategies. An example of a case you will be analyzing is investment in sustainable production methods in Vietnamese villages.

Principles of Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine (20 credits)
This module focuses on the science underpinning preventative cardiovascular medicine and the assessment of cardiovascular risk as applied to clinical practice.

Cardiovascular Risk Management (20 credits)

Postgraduate Certificate

Module 1 – Foundations of Clinical Reporting.

This module is compulsory for all students, and provides the core elements that underpin and complement the rest of the course. You must then complete pairs of modules (one being practice¬-based).

In addition to the Foundations Module, to be eligible for an award. The Foundations Module plus two other modules e.g. Appendicular Skeleton I and Appendicular Skeleton II would enable a you to exit with a PgC.

Postgraduate Diploma

If you wish to continue your studies to gain a PgD you must study Module 10, which focuses on Quality and Audit of Reporting in Practice. As this is a work¬ based course, it is not subject to the norms of the academic year.

You'll be expected to complete a Postgraduate Diploma (six modules) in 18 months or a Postgraduate Certificate (three modules) in twelve months. Approximately 10 hours per week is spent on independent study, giving you considerable flexibility in managing your learning time.

MSc Clinical Reporting

Having completed six modules (Postgraduate Diploma) you can achieve the MSc Clinical Reporting by completing:

• Research Approaches and Methods module
• Research Dissertation (counts as 2 modules)

Format

In keeping with the University’s Learning and Teaching strategy, the programme is learner centred and is orientated significantly towards workplace partnerships; using work based materials and the normal work environment as a source and site of learning.

Regular briefing sessions are held at the University throughout the programme to direct learning activities, and provide tutorial support. Teaching for the Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma is delivered by senior lecturers, experienced reporting radiographers and Consultant Radiologists. At each briefing block students complete test banks and regular vivas are undertaken to test knowledge and progression.

You should expect to commit around ten hours per week in independent study.

Assessment

Your knowledge and skills will be informally assessed on an on­going basis throughout the pathway through a range of methods and processes. You will have opportunity to receive formative feedback on your work at various points during the course through a variety of learning activities.

Formal or summative assessment will take place throughout the pathway and are scheduled to meet University guidance and to enable appropriate feedback to be returned to students in between assessments.

Assessment of knowledge and skills may include written essays/reports, reflective writing, case studies, oral/poster presentations or Objective Structured Examinations (OSE). All assessments focus on your ability to progress and integrate theory and practice.

Successful completion of this course provides you with the skills and knowledge to enter or continue your career as an advanced practitioner or consultant within the radiography profession. COURSE SUMMARY

This practical course uses a work-based learning approach to develop the higher-level skills that will lead to advanced practitioner status.

This is a challenging and intense programme and allows experienced neonatal intensive care nurses to become qualified advanced neonatal nurse practitioners.

This 12 month course requires a high level of commitment to succeed and you will move from a nursing to a medical rota immediately upon qualification.  

You will achieve a number of clinical competencies such as advanced resuscitation skills, insertion of percutaneous long lines, insertion of umbilical and venous catheters, airway management and intubation and chest drains.

COURSE DETAILS

The programme may be commissioned by Health Education North West to meet the needs of a modernizing NHS. Upon completion you will be eligible for a non-medical advanced practitioner in Neonates to work within a junior medical rota.

TEACHING

You are expected to be flexible during the programme to facilitate your learning and clinical practice/experience:

  • During the first three months you will be introduced to new concepts, theories and medical management  including physiology, pathophysiology for neonates with in the maternity department and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • For the rest of the programme you will attend university and work in clinical practice
  • You will self-roster your off duty, clinical practice/experience within your tertiary intensive neonatal care unit (learning on the job)
  • You will be given a named supervisor (consultant neonatologist)
  • You must accrue a minimum of 720 clinical hours during your twelve months training

Simulation teaching will be undertaken in the university’s simulation suite and in the clinical area.

ASSESSMENT

You will be expected to undertake a series of assessments including a clinical portfolio, written assignments, OSCE, and supervised clinical practice by specialist registrars, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners and consultant neonatologists.

FACILITIES

Our Clinical Practice Wards are located in the Mary Seacole Building on the second floor. There are four rooms designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patient's beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.

We also have a number of clinical skills rooms that enhance student learning from taking blood pressure, to giving CPR and more complicated procedures. Along with nursing skills rooms where you can practice in a ward situation, there are basic skills rooms for sessions such as moving and handling.

Patient Simulators

The patient simulation laboratory provides you with the opportunity to tackle real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment. Set up like a hospital ward, the lab contains hi-tech patient simulators that can mimic everything from the common cold to a major heart condition.

The equipment includes:

  • Emergency Care Patient Simulators: Anatomically correct, feature-rich mannequins, which can be used for the physical demonstration of various clinical signs including bleeding, breathing, blinking eyes and convulsions.
  • iStan Patient Simulators: A step up from the ECS, the iStan adds an essential human element to patient simulation. It moves, breathes, can cry out or moan with pain, providing a realistic patient for you to practice on
  • Pedia Patient Simulator: A complete reproduction of a six-year-old child enabling you to practice paediatric scenarios
  • Baby simulator: This mannequin makes it possible to interact with our most vulnerable patients - in a safe, realistic learning environment

All the simulation equipment can be linked up to some very hi-tech computer and audio-visual aids. Groups of students get to role-play a wide range of different scenarios, with a lab co-ordinator observing, running and intervening in the scenario remotely.

Sophisticated computer equipment can also provide detailed physiological information for each of the simulators under observation. The lab will help you develop the clinical skills you need but also the high level communication skills that will make a real difference to your patients.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Upon completion of this course, students will become advanced neonatal nurse practitioners and will work on a medical rota. Some students may also wish to progress onto a PhD or work as a nurse consultant or in a leadership role in clinical practice.

We offer two musculoskeletal pathways which enable you, as a clinician, to assess and manage patients with a range of musculoskeletal conditions beyond your normal scope of practice. The MSc Renewable Energy: Technology and Sustainability deals with the applications of renewable energy and sustainable technology combined with the impact on the environment of using non-sustainable technologies. We focus on the technical and policy questions arising from global demands for secure, affordable and sustainable energy. We cover rapidly-evolving fields that are vitally relevant to how society develops in the 21st century. This course is accredited by the Energy Institute and the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers.

The distinctive focus is on renewable energy and sustainable technologies, as well as carbon management and energy use in the built environment.

There is international concern about the environmental damage associated with the conversion of energy from all sources. Renewable energy sources can make a significant contribution to the reduction of pollution, if used in a sustainable way. Dissertation

The dissertation is a major individual research project. Guidance will be given on choosing a research topic, research techniques and the style and presentation of the finished document. Classes in research skills are provided as part of the dissertation module. Students will have their own carefully selected dissertation tutor whose role is to help them plan and successfully execute this key part of the programme.

Full-time

We offer a one-year, full-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The full-time programme starts in September each year.

Flexible part-time

We also offer a two-year, part-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The duration of the flexible route is strongly recommended as two years, but this is not fixed. The flexible course starts in September each year.
