Oxford University's Master of Studies in Creative Writing is a two-year, part-time master's degree course offering a unique combination of high contact hours, genre specialization, and critical and creative breadth.

The emphasis of this postgraduate creative writing course is cross-cultural and cross-genre, pointing up the needs and challenges of the contemporary writer who produces his or her creative work in the context of a global writerly and critical community. The master's degree in creative writing offers a clustered learning format of five Residences, two Guided Retreats and one Placement over two years. The research Placement, a distinguishing feature of the course, offers between one and two weeks' hands-on experience of writing in the real world. Students may undertake their placement in a literary agency, a publishing house, the offices of a literary periodical, a theatre company, a screen production company, or other relevant organization. Placement organisations have included Macmillan, Initialise Films, Random House, the BBC, the Literary Review, AM Heath, Pegasus Theatre, the Poetry Society, and Carcanet.

Students and alumni have won a wide range of prizes. These successes include winning the Gregory O’Donoghue Prize, the Writers’ Village International Short Fiction Award 2014, the Parallel Universe Poetry Competition, the Martin Starkie Prize, the International Jane Martin Poetry Prize, the Heritage Arts Radio play competition, the Cascade Pictures Writer’s Couch pitching competition, first prize in the Poetry Book Society Student Poetry Competition, the Miracle Poetry Competition, Best Photography Book Award from POYi (Pictures of the Year international), and the Yeovil Literary Prize for Poetry. Two alumni have won the Oxford University’s DL Chapman Memorial Prize, another was a finalist in the 2013 Writers at Work Fellowship Competition, and another won the London Fringe Festival’s Short Fiction Award. Alumni have been awarded a Toshiba Studentship, a Hawthornden Fellowship, and funded residencies at the Banff Centre, Canada, and at the Expansionists Project, Whitstable.

Students and alumni have had their work shortlisted across the genres for, among others, the Asham Award, the Bridport Prize, the Bridport Prize for Flash Fiction, the Fish Flash Fiction prize, the Yeoville Literary Prize, the Oxonian poetry prize, the Fish Short Story Prize 2013, the Big Issue in the North’s New Writing Award, the Oxonian review, and the Aesthetica Creative Writing Competition. A 2010 graduate was short-listed for the Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger award 2011. Two alumni were longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize, and one was shortlisted. An alumnus’ debut novel also made the longlist for the Not the Booker Prize.

Destinations

Many of our graduate students have signed with agents, and each year a number go on to undertake doctoral study in creative writing or English Literature. Our graduates have obtained positions in publishing, media and the creative arts industries, as well as teaching positions in tertiary education.

The MSt has enjoyed a very strong application field since its inception, attracting record interest in recent years from a global constituency of writers. The course`s emphasis on critical analysis as well as on writerly and creative excellence attracts students of commensurately strong academic potential as well as of significant creative promise. This combination of academic rigour and creativity is a central distinctive feature of the course. The resulting emphasis on exploration and the development of an individual writerly voice serve to attract particularly talented students from around the world as well as a strongly diverse group of UK students of varied backgrounds and ethnicity.

Who should apply?

We are looking for writers with a proven record of commitment to their craft. You should be a keen reader, and bring an open-minded, questioning approach to both reading and writing. You will not necessarily have yet achieved publication, but you will have written regularly and read widely over a sustained period. You will be keen to dedicate time and energy and staying-power to harnessing your talent, enlarging your skills, and aiming your writerly production at consistently professional standards. It is likely you will have a first degree, or equivalent, although in some cases other evidence of suitability may be acceptable.

For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA we normally seek is 3.6 out of 4.0. We do not seek a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or GMAT score. Although a GRE or GMAT score is not a formal requirement, if one is available it should be supplied.

The high number of contact hours are concentrated into Residences and Retreats. Students should be at a stage in their writing where, with appropriate guidance, they can undertake agreed assignments, projects and essays between meetings. There is a dedicated Course Website for provision of up-to-date information; contact and exchange between students; and contact between students and tutors. The course, however, is not a ‘distance-learning’ course, and tutors, while being happy to help with questions or problems, do not offer regular weekly ‘office hours’.

The M.St is unlikely to be suitable for those who are just starting out on their writerly and critical development.

What does the course cover?

The first year concentrates equally on prose (fiction and narrative non-fiction), poetry and drama. There is a significant critical reading and analysis component, which is linked to the writerly considerations explored in each of the three genres. Students are expected to engage fully with all three genres, in a spirit of exploration and with the aim of discovering what impact and relevance unaccustomed genres have for the development of their individual writerly voice. This necessarily involves undertaking assignments and exercises in areas that are new to students, and do not relate directly to any work they may have in progress. Students may be able to continue with their own longer term pieces-in-progress but the concentration of year 1 teaching is on producing new work, and the exercises and assignments, which should take priority, reflect this emphasis.

The second year offers specialisation in a single genre, again accompanied by a significant critical element focused around issues of interest to the individual student and related to the genre of choice.

The unique MSc double degree in Global Media and Communications enables students to study for one year at LSE in London, the UK's media capital, and one year at either the School of Journalism, the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California (USC) – a top US communication school with close links to the Los Angeles media industry, Fudan University – a top journalism faculty with close links to Shanghai's media industry, or the Centre for Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town – the highest-ranked university on the African continent with close links to Cape Town’s media and film industry and NGO sector.

The programme will provide you with a critical exploration of mediation in the global context, examining processes of globalisation in relation to organisation, production, consumption and representation in media and communications. Mandarin language assessment does not form part of the MSc assessment, but attendance, for which there is no additional fee to the student, is required for all students on this programme except those already completely fluent in Mandarin.

Course structure

This course can be studied either full- or part-time and the modules are delivered at different times throughout the year.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, and is flexible enough to meet the needs of part-time students. Delivery is typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, and workbooks for work-based learning.

Each module has approximately 30 hours' lecturer contact and approximately 170 hours of individual study. Individual modules employ varying learning and teaching strategies.

At the start of the course you will consult with the course leader and agree a tailored study plan of module choices for the course. This will be created from the choice of modules available on our Postgraduate Education Framework, to suit your individual professional, academic and personal needs.

Areas of study

You will study a core research-related module from a selection of four titles. These are offered on different campuses and also online so that you can work in the way that best suits you.

Current students are from a range of backgrounds and choose an academic route that accelerates their professional and personal development. For example, a health professional may decide to study a range of clinical modules but a student from a social care background may choose a range of social and health-focused modules.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The programme has been designed to be flexible and responsive to the specific needs of those training, ensuring it is relevant to their particular work circumstances.

The varied professional backgrounds of students facilitates lively discussion and in-depth consideration of the application of psychotherapeutic concepts to their supervision, consultation and coaching practice.

Our Health and Education MSc gives you the opportunity to explore specialist topics that match your personal and professional aspirations, in depth and at an advanced level.

You will benefit from the course if you are involved in teaching for a minimum of 15 hours per week within a health and social care setting. The course will develop your skills and knowledge for personal or professional advancement, with an emphasis on education.

The programme is extremely flexible, and is designed to meet the needs of health graduates in their continuing education and professional development. Each student designs, in consultation with the course leader, their own plan of study choosing from our wide range of modules.

You will be assigned a personal tutor and be able to consult with the course leader before choosing your modules and pathways. This ensures that you have a clear focus on your intended direction before you start the course.

We have a dedicated team of academic staff who are actively engaged in internationalising the nursing and midwifery curriculum.

Course structure

This is a part-time course and the modules are delivered at different times throughout the year. The course is delivered in a variety of ways, and is flexible enough to meet the needs of part-time students. Delivery is typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, and workbooks for work-based learning.

Each module has approximately 30 hours' lecturer contact and approximately 170 hours of individual study. Individual modules employ varying learning and teaching strategies.

Alongside your choice of education modules which make up the PGCert, you will choose a further two modules from our Postgraduate Education Framework and earn the full MSc by completing the dissertation, which will normally have an education component. Alongside your personal tutor, you will review your module choices, according to a career planning framework.

At the start of the course you will consult with the course leader and agree a tailored study plan of module choices for the course. This will be created from the choice of modules available on our Postgraduate Education Framework, to suit your individual professional, academic and personal needs.

You will be able to review your current achievements and then highlight areas for further development throughout the course with use of the University of Brighton's E-folio, that you can use to keep a record of your personal development, educational attainment and career planning.

You will also be provided with an annual review tutorial with the course leader to affirm your progress and direction.

The two-year Master's programme is meant for students who are fascinated by the complexity of human movement. You will study human movement from multiple perspectives, using theories from Medicine, Biology, Mathematics and Behavioural Sciences.

In this programme, you will acquire an advanced theoretical understanding of human movement. You will also gain research skills and professional skills, learning to apply your knowledge in a practical setting.

The programme has two central themes. In 'motor function and cognition in healthy ageing' you will explore how physical activity and innovative solutions can prevent chronic diseases, and preserve cognitive function. You will also study slow aging. In 'rehabilitation and functional recovery' you will improve your understanding of impaired movement and the restoration of functioning in rehabilitation practices.

It is possible to do a crossover between the Master's programmes in Human Movement Sciences and Sport Sciences.

Where appropriate, pharmacists are able to complete episodes of care, whilst also enhancing their role within the team. Patients evaluate their experience of Pharmacist Independent prescribing positively.

Students frequently report that the course is probably the most challenging they have undertaken since their pre-registration programme, but also the most rewarding. Students report positively on the organisation of the course and on the support provided for their preparation as prescribers. The programme delivery is designed to provide opportunities for students to receive feedback to support the development of their work throughout the programme. We consider all student feedback and work with this to enhance the student experience and outcomes.

All entry criteria must be met in full prior to programme commencement:
-Evidence of prior successful study at level 6 and within 6 years of the course start date.

A fully completed application form confirming:
-At least two years' clinical experience in the area in which prescribing will take place.
-Identification of the need to prescribe by the line manager, and access to a prescribing budget on successful completion of the course.
-A Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP) who will act as mentor.
-The DMP mentor must meet the standards required by the Department of Health.
-Clinical governance arrangements agreed by the Non-Medical Prescribing Lead.
-For applicants within Cumbria and Lancashire, evidence of attainment of a minimum mark of 80% in the pre-course numeracy assessment.
-A satisfactory Enhanced DBS check obtained by the applicant’s employer, and issued within three years of the course start date

Issues concerning the ethical, legal, and social implications of advances in biotechnology and biomedicine are increasingly arising both in the United States and abroad. From stem cell research to healthcare reform, these topics involve critical dilemmas at the intersections of law, society, culture, public policy, philosophy, religion, economics, and history.

Scientists, healthcare providers, and policy-makers confront how to approach these complex questions, yet scientific and technological advances have far outpaced our ability to understand or make key decisions about these issues.

The Master of Science in Bioethics, part of Columbia University’s Programs in Bioethics, which also include an Online Certification of Professional Achievement and Online Noncredit Courses, grounds students in historical, philosophical, legal, and social-scientific approaches and models to address bioethical challenges. The program prepares students to work in various capacities within this new and ever-growing field, and includes a concentration in global bioethics – the first of its kind in the United States.

Students study with faculty from across the University, drawing on the extraordinary resources of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Mailman School of Public Health, and Columbia’s Department of Psychiatry. Choose Options Online and On Campus

The program may be taken on a part-time or full-time basis, and students have the option of enrolling on Columbia’s campus in New York or online.

Online, students use a highly collaborative and interactive social learning platform to connect with their instructors and fellow students. All online courses have weekly live web classroom meetings with their professors to enable dynamic interaction around course content. Additionally, students participate in discussion groups, collaborative and independent coursework, interactive forums, and prerecorded videos.

Our programs are designed for maximum flexibility, and students enrolled on campus or online have access to rigorous coursework, world-class instruction by Columbia faculty, career and professional development, and personal feedback on written assignments.

Depending on your interest and schedule, on-campus students may also take courses online. International students on a student visa who were planning to do so may only enroll in one online class each semester.

Switching between on-campus and online is possible. If you enroll in the online format, you can switch to the on-campus format after your first semester with administrative approval.

Note: International students who are interested in switching from online to on campus should consult with us about visa and other requirements as soon as possible in their decision making process. They will also need to consult with ISSO for detailed information related to visa requirements and CPT (Curriculum Practical Training) eligibility.
