During the Massey University’s Master of Construction (Buildng Technology) you will learn how to design and manage healthy and energy efficient homes and workplaces, from principles to applications.
The Master of Contruction has a focus on energy management and healthy buildings and is the only university course that looks at indoor air quality, healthy building and energy issues.
You will learn from senior faculty members and industry experts. Our staff have extensive experience and are working at the global forefront of research into healthy buildings. As well as specific learning around facilities management, you will gain skills in front-end general project management issues such as development, finance, planning and scheduling, contract and stakeholder management. This is supplemented by elective modules from other construction-related endorsements or schools according to your professional specialisation.
Our lecturers come from a range of relevant sectors such as architectural technology, environmental engineering, construction, engineering, and IT. International participants feature strongly on all intakes. This wide mix of expertise allows for you to have meaningful exchange and interaction at this postgraduate level. Staff are very active in research on healthy buildings allowing students to be at the cutting edge of this fast growing area.
The curriculum is flexible to meet your unique study preferences and for your convenience. A full-time option is offered over one year, while the part-time option allows you to work while you study via block study mode, coupled with an interactive virtual learning environment. All courses are delivered in block study mode with Contact Workshops on the Auckland campus.
The built environment affects, and is affected by many external influences. During this programme, you will gain a global perspective of the social, political and ethical influences on building and construction and learn how to overlay these in your decision-making process.
Your learning takes place in an environment of diversity, integrity and transparency. The environment replicates, and reflects the standards of the construction management profession itself.
This degree is 120 credits, meaning you can complete in only one year full time. You can enter this programme if you have an approved four year degree, a three year degree and a postgraduate diploma, or a three year degree and two years relevant work experience.
Postgraduate study is hard work but hugely rewarding and empowering. The workload replicates the high-pressure environment of senior workplace roles.
Postgraduate study is not just ‘more of the same’ undergraduate study. Our experts are there to guide but if you have come from undergraduate study, you will find that postgraduate study demands more in-depth and independent study. It takes you to a new level in knowledge and expertise especially in planning and undertaking research.
The Technology Management Group of UCL's Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL) and UCL Centre for Systems Engineering (UCLse) have pooled expertise to develop this exciting programme, which equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a career in technology management or engineering management.
Students learn about the challenges and opportunities of working with new and legacy technology, and are introduced to key concepts such as technology maturity, lifecycles, risk, reliability and resilience. Systems and strategic thinking is promoted throughout, and the importance of the enterprise context. The research elements aim to instil a deep knowledge of at least one area of technology management with industrial relevance.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Teaching methods incorporate a mix of lectures and case study-based teaching, and groupwork, in which students will be challenged to come up with novel ideas, lead groups to innovative solutions and manage complex tasks under tight time pressure. Drawing on our experience of providing short training courses for industry (such as the Project Manager training courses we run for the European Space Agency) we will integrate a large amount of skills development into our teaching, including skills in communication, negotiation, leadership and motivation, decision-making, and managing complex, time-constrained tasks, all of which will be beneficial for future careers.
The programme blends general principles of management with technology-focused teaching and integrates aspects of systems engineering and project management; the UCL Mullard Space Science Laboratory has nearly fifty years’ experience of developing cutting-edge spacecraft technology, and the programme content builds on research conducted by the Technology Management Group at MSSL in these areas.
The programme contains two compulsory modules relevant to leadership and entrepreneurship (Technology Strategy, and Business Environment). These modules will give students the knowledge and skills necessary to lead new technology-driven enterprises.

The management of complex information, using virtual design and construction, BIM, integrated project delivery approaches and intelligent facility and asset management, is no longer simply a specialist set of activities within construction work; it is increasingly central to the design, construction and operation of buildings and infrastructure.
The management of construction is becoming inseparable from the management of information and information technologies; competitive edge, increased efficiency and productivity are being gained through the strategic use of information systems. The implementation and use of these approaches is transforming the way the built environment is delivered, and transforming the managerial competencies that the sector requires.
The distinctive focus is on the implementation and use of digital technologies in the construction sector.
Clients, both public and private, expect integrated and meaningful information to be delivered alongside the physical product. Built environment professionals need to be able to understand information requirements across the life cycle, to develop and implement project and organisational level information management processes, and to manage a diverse range of data and interfaces through the construction process.
This course provides an opportunity to develop expertise in the developing field of information management for built environment and infrastructure. It provides an introduction to fundamental academic subjects related to information management and an understanding of the latest theories and research, which inform emerging vocational practice across design, construction and operation.

The dissertation is a major individual research project. Guidance will be given on choosing a research topic, research techniques and the style and presentation of the finished document. Classes in research skills are provided as part of the dissertation module. Students will have their own carefully selected dissertation tutor whose role is to help them plan and successfully execute this key part of the programme.
We offer a one-year, full-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The full-time programme starts in September each year.

The Masters award consists of four taught modules followed by a dissertation. The PgDip requires the completion of the four taught modules. For the award of PgCert the completion of two specified taught modules is required. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed mostly through coursework, there are no exams.
On-campus study comprises lectures, tutorials and project work.
Lectures introduce the core knowledge for each module. Tutorials provide a forum for discussion and debate with personalised instruction from tutors, and the project work is your chance to employ research and other techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks.
If you’re studying via distance learning, you’ll enjoy access to an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support. Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors with student interaction. Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self-directed study at your own convenience. The construction industry has witnessed a marked change over the last few years, increasingly moving away from the traditional approach to project management in construction to a more integrated approach, fusing together the design and construction elements where once they would be viewed as separate management disciplines. Therefore a graduate entering the construction management arena must be well equipped to cope with the demands of the construction industry and its expectations of project management. The School of the Built Environment has an exceptionally high graduate employment rate for Project Management in Construction, with graduates employed in a number of related fields including the built environment, civil engineering, heavy engineering, offshore and petrochemical industries.

Guest lecturers from industry with expertise in relevant areas are invited to give lectures throughout the duration of the course. Site visits are organised each year in co-operation with local construction companies - these give full-time students the opportunity to visualise what is learnt and apply it to a real-world context.

FOR THE FULL-TIME STUDY OPTION:
You will study two 30 credit taught modules in each of your first two semesters, these are designed to give you the core knowledge required in construction management. In the final semester you will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits.
FOR THE DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY OPTION:
A 30 credit taught module is studied in each semester for the first 24 months. Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role. Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions.
FOR THE PART-TIME ON CAMPUS STUDY OPTION:
Part-time students attend the University one day per week, usually on day release from employment in industry. A 30 credit module is studied each semester. Throughout the final two semesters you choose to undertake a dissertation or research by design project.
