Format

This course is suitable for the working professional as it is taught online, by distance learning. The flexible structure of the course allows a choice of study routes depending on discipline and professional needs. The vocational nature of the course allows the graduate to use the skills and knowledge obtained to steer their career advancement. Apart from the masters degree, students can study four modules for a Postgraduate Certificate or eight modules for a Postgraduate Diploma.

Teaching will be delivered through the University's online virtual learning environment, Campus Moodle, allowing students to interact with tutors and fellow students around the world. Online study allows for a diverse range of teaching and learning methods to be employed including interactive online discussions (including tutor-student and student-student interaction), and all supported by a dedicated technical team. Assessment methods

The course is largely assessed by way of coursework which can be completed remotely.

There is now a portfolio of assessments for the first stage – which tests students knowledge and skills in a range of different ways but which is largely undertaken in the University’s online teaching environment. This portfolio does include one closed book exam for each of the arbitration and adjudication routes (and two over two years for the "joint" route (Route C), however. This is to be sat at a venue which is arranged by the student – with the support of the University.

The second stage is assessed by way coursework submissions in answer to questions posed by teaching staff and the third stage requires submission of a 15,000 word dissertation.

Selection

Interviews may be held on consideration of a prospective student’s application form. Overseas students are often accepted on their grades and strong recommendation from suitable referees.

Course structure, assessment and accreditation

The MSc comprises a combination of semester-long and one week modules for full-time students, whilst part-time students study a mix of one week and distance-learning modules.

MSc students undertake a major project many of which are sponsored by our industrial partners. Part-time student projects are often specified in conjunction with their sponsoring company and undertaken at their place of work.

All modules are 15 credits. The MSc project is 60 credits.

MSc: 180 credits – six core and two optional modules, plus the MSc project.
PG Diploma: 120 credits – six core and two optional modules.
PG Certificate: 60 credits – four core modules.

- Assessment
Modules are assessed by a combination of written examination, set coursework exercises and laboratory reports. The project is assessed by a dissertation, literature review and oral presentation.

Who is it for?

This MSc degree is aimed at graduates with at least two years of practical experience in construction; however, more recent graduates with a good appreciation of construction processes will also benefit.

Having achieved a firm grounding in engineering you may be keen to develop your skills as a practical engineer working on site or enhance design skills if you are engaged in permanent works design.

Objectives

The course provides the following:
-An introduction to statutory obligations, management methods and special design considerations for temporary works.
-Design of structures used in and for temporary works, their construction and monitoring.
-Design of geotechnical temporary works and processes, including groundwater control and ground investigation.
-Design of temporary works for marine construction, in particular floating structures and the effect of waves and varying water levels.
-The use of plant in temporary works and the provision of appropriate working platforms and access.
-Demolition and alteration of structures, including the disposal/reuse of construction waste.

Teaching and learning

The learning and teaching approach for the course encompasses a range of methods which support active learning including lectures, workshops, group work, case studies, problem-based learning, presentations and peer review.

Workshops, group work, case studies and problem-based learning will be used to build your ability to critically review and assess options for design and assessment of temporary works. Your learning will be supported by the online learning environment Moodle, which will provide resources for independent learning, such as further reading, links to wider sources of information and quizzes for self-assessment.

All modules involve undertaking a certain number of individual and/or group assignments (coursework) during the teaching terms, as well as comprehensive final examinations.

Part-time students are expected to complete all the modules within the two-year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence, which permits engagement by part-time students alongside full-time students. The project is undertaken by part-time students in the second year.

Teaching normally takes place on two full days per week, although there may be some variations to accommodate practical exercises and site visits. In addition, there is an introduction week at the start of the programme each year which is attended by all full and part-time students.

This method of delivery is designed to accommodate students working full-time within reasonable commuting distance of City, University of London, as well as to full-time students, by concentrating tuition into two days per week on average, and encouraging flexibility for independent study.

Modules

Temporary works refers to works enabling the construction of, protection, support or provision of access to permanent works which might or might not remain in place at the completion of a construction project. Examples of temporary works include structures such as gantries for heavy plant, materials or accommodation as well as supports for partially-completed or partially-dismantled structures, excavations and accesses. The course delivery and content is actively supported by the Temporary Works Forum (TWf), which promotes best practice within the UK construction industry and sponsors the Centre of Excellence in Temporary Works and Construction Method Engineering at City, University of London. The course content has been developed in collaboration with the TWf membership and TWf members will contribute to lectures and design exercises.

The course addresses the regulatory background to temporary works for construction, the design of geotechnical, structural and marine temporary works, demolition, plant, safe working methods and access works. You will gain both the technical understanding to undertake safe but cost-effective designs for a full range of temporary works and a good understanding of the wide range of plant and techniques that can be employed.

The programme will be delivered by industry experts providing insights into current practice in temporary works and academic members of staff experienced in the theory underlying the design methods employed. There will be visits to operational sites and practical exercises to provide opportunities to experience decision-making in the field, combined with group sessions to develop your knowledge further through active engagement. This will also require you to present your work occasionally, participate in peer review sessions and work in teams.

The course consists of eight taught modules and a project. The project is a major individual research exercise on a topic relevant to temporary works and construction method engineering. The main outcome of the project is a written report (dissertation).

Taught modules - the Temporary Works and Construction Method Engineering MSc comprises 180 credits, with 60 credits awarded to the project. Attendance is required to obtain 120 credits by studying all of the taught modules.

The taught modules address the following topics:

The course is a two-year part-time degree targeted at those who have more than three years' professional experience and have already attained a leadership role or been identified as potential leaders in their field.

The course will enhance students' technical knowledge and managerial skills with the expectation that they will return to their respective companies trained as agents of change ready to redefine the way in which the infrastructure of society is created. The part-time format of the course permits students to continue with their professional career while studying.

Format

Students will explore the future of construction, seeking new paradigms and models for delivery, and have their existing assumptions challenged. They are exposed to the latest research in design, management, and construction techiques and processes. The programme encompasses the full spectrum of the construction industry from the high-level financing requirements of mega-projects through to the latest innovations in analysis, design and materials technology.

Contributing lecturers have included the UK's current and former Chief Construction Advisors, the Chair of the UK Government BIM Implementation Group, the Technical Director of HS2, the Head of the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation, CEOs and senior directors of many major client, contractor and consulting organisations, leading journalists and the Director of Construction for the London 2012 Olympics, to name but a few.

Teaching is delivered through a series of seven intensive residential weeks in Cambridge, interspersed through the two years of the course. These weeks involve lectures, workshops, seminars with industry experts, group project work, and individual supervisions.

The first semester provides a foundation in the most significant issues relating to the sustainable use of innovative structural engineering materials in design and construction; and involves units in natural building materials, advanced timber engineering, advanced composites, sustainable concrete technology and architectural structures.

- Five taught compulsory units

- Includes coursework involving laboratory or small project sessions.

- Typically each unit consists of 22 hours of lectures and 11 hours of tutorials, and may additionally involve a number of hours of laboratory activity and field trips with approximately 65-70 hours of private study (report writing, laboratory results processing and revision for examinations).

Semester 2 (February-May)

Semester 2 consists of a further 30 credits comprising of five core 6 credit units. These units include:

- Materials engineering in construction

- Advanced timber engineering

- Engineering project management.

Students will undertake a group-based design activity and an individual project scoping and planning unit (Project Unit 1). The group-based activity involves application of project management techniques and provides the basis for an integrated approach to Engineering, but with the possibility of specialising in the chosen master's topic.

It is a feature of this programme that the project work proceeds as far as possible in a way typical of best industrial practice. The Semester 2 project activities have significant planning elements including the definition of milestones and deliverables according to a time-scale, defined by the student in consultation with his/her academic supervisor and (where appropriate) his/her industrial advisor.

Summer/Dissertation Period (June-September)

Individual project leading to MSc dissertation.

Depending on the chosen area of interest, the individual project may involve theoretical and/or experimental activities; for both such activities students can use the department computer suites and well-equipped and newly refurbished laboratories for experimental work. The MSc Modern Building Design provides students with the knowledge of modern building design practice, methodologies and processes that are increasingly sought after by major engineering and design consultancies. It places emphasis on the key engineering and modelling challenges faced during the building design process and prepares students for industry, providing them with the practical and interpersonal skills to stand out to potential employers in a highly competitive market.

This unique and innovative 15-month full-time programme has three core components:
- a taught element, consisting of eight units

The final semester consists of a research dissertation. This provides a start-to-finish research experience to embed the research and professional knowledge gained throughout the programme. A three-month professional placement is an opportunity for you to learn from our industrial partners. We guarantee to find enough suitable vacancies for all our students but cannot promise that you will be placed as this also depends on your performance at interview. With this in mind, our dedicated Placements Team runs workshops on CV-writing and interview techniques to support you during the application and interview process.

UCLan’s Construction Law programme is designed to meet the international demand for engineers, architects and project managers, and other construction professionals to be skilled in preventing and resolving disputes in the construction industry. It combines contact with the course team through electronic distance learning technology, including webinars, to provide flexibility of learning to suit individual needs.

The programme places considerable emphasis on the application of the law in problem-solving and problem-avoidance situations within the context of a global construction industry. Widespread use is made of case study material and real-life scenarios, which will further develop your ability to formulate, propose and defend an argument.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

The degree award has RICS accreditation and therefore membership of the RICS is available via the APC route, following
successful completion. The University has been reaccredited as a Recognised Course Provider under the CIArb Pathways Scheme - adjudication pathway with domestic arbitration.
Successful students may apply to the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators for the use of the designated letters ‘MCIArb’. Successful students' may be exempted from CIArb Introduction and Modules 1 and 2, and are eligible for membership with the Chartered Institute.

Course content
MSc Construction Law and Dispute Resolution is a course designed to meet the international demand for engineers, architects and project managers, and other construction professionals to be skilled in understanding their rights and obligations under contracts, and
to prevent and resolve disputes in the construction industry.
The course content considers the impact of current issues on contracts and the workplace, such as an increasingly technological and global industry and sustainable construction, which aims to minimise environmental impact and maximise both economic viability and
the social benefits.

This programme is offered as a distance learning (blended method) using available online materials and extensive electronic databases and journals from the university’s own resources, as well as online tutor support. We have specialist construction and law librarians,
available for online support and the supply of online materials. The course is also supported by prominent legal professionals.

Research
Sustainable domestic and global construction contracts, BIM and design issues regarding coastal engineering are themes within the course’s research. Given the ever-increasing importance of environmental and sustainability agendas, this research theme involves
active engagement with industry, key consortia/research bodies, and the wider outreach communities. The findings of this research inform the course to ensure it is changes to meet the latest industry needs.

The MA is for people with a personal passion for material culture, materials innovations, crafts, designs, heritage, and the cultural issues which they present. Some are social scientists rethinking the engagement of anthropology, ethnography and material culture; others are designers or makers exploring cultural and social issues.

Degree information

Students will study anthropological and material culture theory, apply social science and ethnographic methodologies to the problems of design, explore the technical, aesthetic and symbolic properties of materials, and examine how these interact with production technologies and consumption choices. They will develop understanding of how working with materials, crafts, and design helps us to rethink, understand, and critique socio-cultural issues in ways beyond other disciplines, and in cutting-edge anthropological ways.

All MA students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 15,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Several courses entail practical instruction, including visits to product design companies and trade fairs; archaeological field sites; Kew Botanical Archive and the British Museum. Assessment is through unseen examination, long essays, research methodology project and the dissertation.

Format

Distance Learning:
The distance learning Construction Project Management course is a fully on-line course with no attendance on campus. The course is presented via our Virtual Learning Environment (CampusMoodle).

The CampusMoodle infrastructure provides a virtual classroom to deliver the equivalent of on-campus face-to-face staff ¬student contact. The learning experience is enhanced through the provision of core reading, supplementary notes, reading lists, case study materials, web links, video footage, synchronous and asynchronous interaction and discussions. Additionally commercial systems such as Skype are employed to hold online tutorials, guest presentations, virtual site visits and interviews.

Full-time:
The full-time learning Construction Project Management course is based upon campus attendance.

Students will learn by a mixture of teaching and learning methods, including Lecture, Tutorial, Workshop, Seminar, Practical Work, Case Study, Simulations, Games, Student Centred Learning and Private Study. Being a vocationally orientated course the teaching and learning is focused upon providing a sound knowledge and understanding of the subject material in the context of the Built Environment.

Textbooks

Students are expected to purchase core texts, all as indicated in the course Module Descriptors under the heading of Indicative Bibliographies and to pay all costs associated with the preparation of coursework e. g. posters, document folders and the like. Total course expenditure should not exceed £200 to £300 overall.

The construction industry is a large employer, with over 100 million people worldwide believed to depend on it. The resulting built environment accounts for nearly 50% of carbon emissions as it consumes an equal percentage of extracted, natural materials generating large quantities of landfill waste and using vast amount of water, all valuable and increasingly scarce resources.

Course Overview

UK construction is well-placed to benefit from the opportunities presented by the global shift to a low carbon economy and green construction, but there is a continuing need to ensure investment in innovation and technology alongside increased collaboration between businesses and research institutions to enable the UK to realise this potential. There is also scope for further progress, particularly with regard to addressing evident skills shortages. The global green and sustainable building industry is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 22.8% between now and 2017 as a result of increasing low carbon regulatory requirements and greater societal demand for greener products. It seems that the market is recognising these opportunities.

According to recent research by McGraw-Hill Construction (2013), around half the architects, engineers, contractors, building owners and building consultants around the world anticipate that at least 60% of their work will be green by 2015, up from 28% of firms in 2012 and only 13% in 2009.

The UK’s existing housing stock, which accounts for over half of the greenhouse gas emissions from the built environment, presents growth and development opportunities for the UK’s low carbon and sustainable construction market.

The programme will draw upon subject expertise within the School of Architecture, Built and Natural Environments, which has been commended by Externals for its commitment to innovative teaching and learning. The programme enhances a number of advanced transferable skills and equips the student with a range of skills appropriate for a broad variety of future opportunities as well as providing skills and competencies for those students who are progressing to MPhil / PhD. Regularly, our MSc students have progressed to our PhD provision. Sustainability is seen as a priority in construction circles; the very nature of its operation places a heavy burden on the environment. The programme holds firm the sustainability concept and provides students with ‘real’ examples of established practices.

Assessment

Assessments used within this Programme are normally formative or summative. In the former assessment is designed to ensure students become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Typically, such assessment will take the form of practical exercises where a more hands-on approach shows student’s ability on a range of activities. Traditional formal time-constrained assessment is by means of tests and examinations, normally of two-hour duration. Examinations are a traditional method of verifying that the work produced is the students’ own work.

To help authenticate student coursework, some modules require that the student and lecturer negotiate the topic for assessment on an individual basis, allowing the lecturer to monitor progress. Some modules where the assessment is research-based require students to verbally/visually present the research results to the lecturer and peers, followed by a question and answer session. Such assessment strategies are in accord with the learning and teaching strategies employed by the team, that is, where the aim is to generate work that is mainly student-driven, individual, reflective and where appropriate, vocationally-orientated. Feedback to students will occur early in the study period and continue over the whole study session thereby allowing for greater value added to the student’s learning.

Career Opportunities

The MSc is widely recognised as a valuable postgraduate qualification. It demonstrates the student’s ability to commit to a programme of study and develop their knowledge within that area of academic study. The programme will help develop skills which are valuable to a wide range of employers, such as the ability to analyse complex information critically, the ability to present clear and coherent arguments and the ability to present complex information in a clear manner.

Such an education will develop an awareness of the interconnectedness of the built environment, and equip the student with a qualification relevant to a number of different vocational situations. The flexibility of the modular programme enables students to develop packages of study which satisfy specialist interests and career aspirations in the built environment.

In business many large organisations have established management systems and auditing procedures, and our former students’ career paths demonstrate opportunities at all levels of management. This degree, which was developed in consultation with the BRE and major Companies/Consultants, will help students develop a career in these areas. In fact, the integral link with the BRE is a fundamental ‘kitemark’ for students and associated employers of this programme.

The School has a long history of industrial liaison. Since the 1990s programmes have had annual industrial liaison meetings. Feedback on new policies, initiatives and issues informed the curriculum, teaching and practice, especially when providing valuable input prior to validation (in particular BRE). The links will also provide experience for students to work on ‘live’ projects.

Recommendations by BRE on the content of the proposed programme(s) include:
-Providing students with the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary projects with students pursuing other construction-related qualifications, for example, architects, surveyors, civil engineers, quantity surveyors, planners and tradespeople; this approach would simulate real-life construction projects
-Enabling students to gain practical experience, thus applying the theory they have learnt

These types of industrially-centred learning provide the opportunity to inform teaching, learning and assessment adding much value to employability.
