The MSc Construction Economics and Management postgraduate course equips graduates with the skills to become senior managers, policy advisers and decision-makers in any branch of the construction industry. It can also provide teachers and researches in these subject areas with professional academic development.

Degree information

This RICS accredited programme aims to develop students' knowledge and skills under two mutually supporting themes for which the School of Construction and Project Management has an international reputation:
-The economics and finance of construction at project, firm and industry levels.
-The management of construction projects and enterprises.

Construction is taken in its widest sense to include design, infrastructure and the supply chain.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of four core modules (60 credits), four optional/elective modules (60 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma, four core modules, four optional modules (120 credits, full-time nine months) is offered.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students submit a 10,000-word dissertation related to the main themes of the programme, under the guidance of an individual supervisor.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and group work on case studies, exercises and problems. Lectures include industry guest speakers. Assessment is through written examination, term papers and the dissertation.

Careers

The career options for graduates are varied, and many students go on to work for construction, engineering and design enterprises, professional consultants and commercial research organisations, and client enterprises with significant project portfolios such as retailers or banks. Graduates are keenly recruited by many of the UK's very best construction-sector firms. The MSc can be used as a foundation for MPhil/PhD research.

Employability
The programme offers an understanding of financial and other kinds of management within the context of the project, the project-based firm and the construction industry in its widest sense. There are some elements which can be put to use straight away combined with other elements of a strategic nature which will prove useful as the graduate's career moves into more senior management. It is thus an excellent graduate qualification to offer employers by those trained in a technical discipline without previous economic training or those trained in economics or finance without previous exposure to construction.

Semester one, compulsory modules
- ICT for Construction Projects
This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

- Principles of Project Management
Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. Specific areas covered include management responsibility for running construction projects; contemporary issues facing the construction industry; cultural complexity and the impact of behaviour and motivation on performance; and applying appropriate project management techniques for the different project phases.

- Postgraduate Research Project
The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to Construction Management.

Students will gain an understanding of sustainability issues that relate to the built environment; ways in which these issues can be managed and effective communication of both strategic and technical information.

- Management of Construction Processes
This module introduces students to cutting edge contemporary management concepts and innovations; complexities of setting up and managing logistics on large construction sites; and essential project management techniques such as risk management.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector. The application of strategic management tools to develop appropriate change strategies will be explored and fundamental skills in communication, negotiation and leadership will be developed.

- People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

This exciting new full-time programme has been designed to provide an opportunity for quantity surveying graduates to become educated in specialised areas of their profession that are not generally covered in great detail in their undergraduate degrees.It has been developed in response to considerable demand for an additional qualification and specialisation in the discipline. The primary emphasis of the programme is on developing the knowledge and skills of construction cost management of building services installations and civil engineering works.The programme is presented within the School of Real Estate and Construction Economics in the Faculty of the Built Environment in DIT. The total intake of students each year will be approx. 20-25 students. Because of the applied nature of the programme, it is expected that, initially at least, the students will come with undergraduate qualifications in quantity surveying, construction economics, construction economics & management, or equivalent.The content of the programme, delivered over 1½ years (3 Semesters) full-time includes subjects pertinent to the practice of quantity surveyors and construction economics professionals, but of a more specialised nature than those normally covered in their undergraduate degrees. The programme’s focus is strongly oriented towards the development of the underlying knowledge and the skills involved in construction cost management, especially of the building services and civil engineering work. This programme should be of particular interest to international students who want to study on a full-time basis in Ireland.

Surveying project:

Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. Teaching and learning

Teaching, learning and assessment methods are to a considerable degree determined by the use of the applied learning approach which leads to a more challenging and industrially relevant course than the traditional lecture approach. Learning takes place through groups of students puzzling through problems, often adapted from real situations with much of the complexity and context intact, using published resources, or reference to experts who are available to offer advice.

In full-time mode, the delivery of new material is weekly with intermediate tutorial or seminar sessions. The intensive study weeks and a European field-trip, when students in both modes of study come together, complement this delivery pattern. For the open-learner, the virtual learning environment is the primary mode of delivery. Communication with open-learning students will be supplemented by email and telephone during the periods off-campus.

Approach to assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework, which includes a great variety of types of work, including quizzes taken remotely on Moodle (Brookes online learning environment). Material can be downloaded from our virtual learning environment and closed discussions can take place. It also enables on-campus and open-learning students to remain in contact with each other.

Field trips

A European field trip is a compulsory element of the PGCert modules. It typically takes place over a five-day period towards the end of January and is heavily subsidised by the department.

The aim of this field trip is to consolidate the knowledge gained in the early part of the course and to develop team and other relationships through exposing our students to European project management practices and to assess their ability to observe and report on the different approaches to project management in the UK and in a European country.

The field trip normally consists of visits to prominent construction/engineering projects and sites, plus architectural attractions, both en route and at the destination. You are introduced to the development and planning practices at the destination, as well as having the opportunity to visit major complex projects.

Student body

The programme attracts students from diverse backgrounds and locations. Students will normally hold degrees in fields within the realm of the built environment including Civil Engineering, Construction, Architecture and Building, and have decided to contribute to the development of the built environment around us by effectively managing construction projects.

Our students hail from as far afield as Nigeria, Russia and India, with backgrounds ranging from recently graduated at undergraduate level, to working with small local companies, to fully established managers in large international construction companies. This diverse group of students bring with them individual responses to the applied learning approach that is at the core of our course delivery.

Typically the open-learning students are employed by a number of different organisations from the private and public sectors in different countries. They have the opportunity to share their experiences in order to gain better understanding of the industry, the range of challenges that Construction Project Managers face, and therefore the breadth of skills that they need to develop in order to perform successfully.

Planning and controlling the allocation of resources, and the detailed matching of design and production to the needs of the market for built space, are at the core of the construction and property industries.

Distance Learning:
The distance learning Construction Project Management course is a fully on-line course with no attendance on campus. The course is presented via our Virtual Learning Environment (CampusMoodle).

The CampusMoodle infrastructure provides a virtual classroom to deliver the equivalent of on-campus face-to-face staff ¬student contact. The learning experience is enhanced through the provision of core reading, supplementary notes, reading lists, case study materials, web links, video footage, synchronous and asynchronous interaction and discussions. Additionally commercial systems such as Skype are employed to hold online tutorials, guest presentations, virtual site visits and interviews.

Full-time:
The full-time learning Construction Project Management course is based upon campus attendance.

Programme Background

Construction Project Management at Heriot-Watt University is one of the longest-running programmes of its kind in the UK, equipping graduates with the theoretical knowledge and practical and technical skills to manage people and projects within the construction industry. A range of core courses covering management, procurement and technology-related subjects will give you a foundation in management principles while providing practical skills relevant to professional practice in construction. You will also choose an optional course from a range of subjects drawn from our built environment programmes, providing you with a broader understanding of built environment issues and an opportunity to tailor your studies to fit your interests and professional needs.

Students tend to come from the construction industry, bringing with them practical experience in a variety of built environment roles, or from other professional backgrounds but with an interest in converting to a career in the construction industry. Students from all over the world study this programme both on campus and by Independent Distance Learning (IDL).

Professional Recognition

The MSc is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), demonstrating its professional recognition and industrial relevance. The University is a Corporate Member of the Association for Project Management.

Timetable

Block: Friday (day and evening) plus Saturday, to complete qualification in one year
Full-time: 12 month – two days-per-week (each week), to complete qualification in one year
Part-time: 24 months – one day-per-week, to complete qualification in two years.

Teaching and learning

The core areas of study are based on the following key themes:

Each of these four themes is informed by six strands of subject specialist knowledge: Economics, Accounting and Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations and Project Management, Marketing and Leadership and Strategic Management. The delivery of the modules is sequential so that you're able to apply the latest managerial theories to a real life situation in a holistic approach from the outset.

Although the acquisition of knowledge and understanding will be delivered through a variety of strategies, the use of real life case studies is central to our teaching and learning strategy.

Strategy for teaching and learning

Real life case study
At the start of the course each participant chooses a case study (or case studies if one does not cover all scenarios) based on their disciplinary background and/ or the chosen MBA flavour. The teaching methods are integrated throughout the four core modules and demonstrated in examples and applied to the case study. For example, under the first module-Inside the Modern Organisation – the case study is used so that the participant can address the key issues across the various disciplinary streams.

Master classes
A series of master classes delivered by external experts in the various specialist fields will be delivered throughout the academic year enabling our students to engage with contemporary management issues.

Residential weekends
Two residential events will support students learning

Lectures, seminars and workshops
Each of the four core modules will be delivered by a team of academics from each of the subject discipline stream. Interactive seminars and workshops will support the lectures and have a strong focus on small group activities to encourage the active participation of students throughout the academic year, developing peer learning, the sharing of knowledge and support amongst the diverse student body.

Self-managed learning
Self-managed learning activities to supplement and consolidate classroom based activity include: reading texts and relevant journals, application of knowledge to additional problem based exercises, engaging in coursework, group discussion, review of key topics and examination preparation where appropriate. Many of these activities are supported by the virtual learning environment (VLE).

Knowledge and skills development

The programme provides opportunities for you to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills including intellectual, practical and transferable skills.
