It provides an introduction to the fundamental topics related to Construction Cost Management and an understanding of the latest academic theories and research, which inform vocational practice in the financial management of construction projects. The purpose is to prepare non-cognate graduates for a career in quantity surveying or financial management in construction.

The distinctive focus is on the principles, tools and techniques of financial and cost management from inception of a project, through to design and construction.

The course is for graduates from any discipline who are seeking a professional qualification leading to employment in a dynamic, exciting profession involving the application of financial, managerial and property design skills.

Construction and property cost consultancy is a thriving business activity which is seeking to recruit ambitious graduates from all disciplines who wish to enter a career in which they will develop in a climate of self-management and progress by making their own career choices. Dissertation

The dissertation is a major individual research project. Guidance will be given on choosing a research topic, research techniques and the style and presentation of the finished document. Classes in research skills are provided as part of the dissertation module. Students will have their own carefully selected dissertation tutor whose role is to help them plan and successfully execute this key part of the programme.

Full-time

We offer a one-year, full-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The full-time programme starts in September each year.

Flexible part-time

We also offer a two-year, part-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The duration of the flexible route is strongly recommended as two years, but this is not fixed. The flexible course starts in September each year.

Cost managers in construction and property can work for consultancy practices, designers or construction firms. They provide the essential financial direction to projects while working with clients, architects, designers or building engineers. The cost consultant firms associated with this established programme are looking to recruit graduates who wish to enter a demanding and rewarding profession. Those students who secure appropriate sponsorship from such firms can take the course in flexible mode while undertaking the required professional training for RICS qualification in parallel. Full-time students will carry out their professional training after completing the MSc.

This exciting new full-time programme has been designed to provide an opportunity for quantity surveying graduates to become educated in specialised areas of their profession that are not generally covered in great detail in their undergraduate degrees.It has been developed in response to considerable demand for an additional qualification and specialisation in the discipline. The primary emphasis of the programme is on developing the knowledge and skills of construction cost management of building services installations and civil engineering works.The programme is presented within the School of Real Estate and Construction Economics in the Faculty of the Built Environment in DIT. The total intake of students each year will be approx. 20-25 students. Because of the applied nature of the programme, it is expected that, initially at least, the students will come with undergraduate qualifications in quantity surveying, construction economics, construction economics & management, or equivalent.The content of the programme, delivered over 1½ years (3 Semesters) full-time includes subjects pertinent to the practice of quantity surveyors and construction economics professionals, but of a more specialised nature than those normally covered in their undergraduate degrees. The programme’s focus is strongly oriented towards the development of the underlying knowledge and the skills involved in construction cost management, especially of the building services and civil engineering work. This programme should be of particular interest to international students who want to study on a full-time basis in Ireland.

Construction project:

Our construction project managers look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process.

Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

Market report and case study analysis:

Students on our MSc Construction Project Management course can choose to study International Real Estate and Construction as an optional module. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.

The Master of Construction Management is a 300 point or 3 year program. The first 100 points (1 year) is made up of foundation study tailored to students from non-construction backgrounds. Your learning will be supported by the online learning environment Moodle, which will provide resources for independent learning, such as further reading, links to wider sources of information and quizzes for self-assessment.

All modules involve undertaking a certain number of individual and/or group assignments (coursework) during the teaching terms, as well as comprehensive final examinations.

Part-time students are expected to complete all the modules within the two-year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence, which permits engagement by part-time students alongside full-time students. The project is undertaken by part-time students in the second year.

Teaching normally takes place on two full days per week, although there may be some variations to accommodate practical exercises and site visits. In addition, there is an introduction week at the start of the programme each year which is attended by all full and part-time students.

This method of delivery is designed to accommodate students working full-time within reasonable commuting distance of City, University of London, as well as to full-time students, by concentrating tuition into two days per week on average, and encouraging flexibility for independent study.

Modules

Temporary works refers to works enabling the construction of, protection, support or provision of access to permanent works which might or might not remain in place at the completion of a construction project. Examples of temporary works include structures such as gantries for heavy plant, materials or accommodation as well as supports for partially-completed or partially-dismantled structures, excavations and accesses. The course delivery and content is actively supported by the Temporary Works Forum (TWf), which promotes best practice within the UK construction industry and sponsors the Centre of Excellence in Temporary Works and Construction Method Engineering at City, University of London. The course content has been developed in collaboration with the TWf membership and TWf members will contribute to lectures and design exercises.

The course addresses the regulatory background to temporary works for construction, the design of geotechnical, structural and marine temporary works, demolition, plant, safe working methods and access works. You will gain both the technical understanding to undertake safe but cost-effective designs for a full range of temporary works and a good understanding of the wide range of plant and techniques that can be employed.

The programme will be delivered by industry experts providing insights into current practice in temporary works and academic members of staff experienced in the theory underlying the design methods employed. There will be visits to operational sites and practical exercises to provide opportunities to experience decision-making in the field, combined with group sessions to develop your knowledge further through active engagement. This will also require you to present your work occasionally, participate in peer review sessions and work in teams.

The course consists of eight taught modules and a project. The project is a major individual research exercise on a topic relevant to temporary works and construction method engineering. The main outcome of the project is a written report (dissertation).

Taught modules - the Temporary Works and Construction Method Engineering MSc comprises 180 credits, with 60 credits awarded to the project. Attendance is required to obtain 120 credits by studying all of the taught modules.

The taught modules address the following topics:
-An introduction to statutory obligations, management methods and special design considerations for temporary works.
-Design of structures used in and for temporary works, their construction and monitoring.
-Design of geotechnical temporary works and processes, including groundwater control and ground investigation.
-Design of temporary works for marine construction, in particular floating structures and the effect of waves and varying water levels.
-The use of plant in temporary works and the provision of appropriate working platforms and access.
-Demolition and alteration of structures, including the disposal/reuse of construction waste.

Project - the topics/titles for the major project can be chosen from:
-A list suggested by the lecturers of the course.
-Your own ideas/initiatives.
-Where applicable, by your sponsoring company/industrial partner.

Our collaboration with members of the TWf means that many of the topics offered will relate to problems of current interest to industry and will be co-supervised by industry organisations.

Temporary works are an important aspect of most construction projects. Professional Portfolio is a 20 week, 45 credit point subject available to Master of Construction Practice (Professional) students in the Faculty of Society & Design. This subject is strongly experientially oriented and encourages students to develop their professional skills in a real world environment. The subject will ensure that students combine self-analysis and reflective learning skills with professional methodologies, so as to expand analytic and strategic thinking capabilities. It will provide practical experience for students to develop their skills in a profession relevant to their Master specialisation. All students will complete a 2,000-word scoping document, and either undertake a work placement in Australia for 210 hours (which includes an employer’s report) and reflective journal (up to 5,000 words) OR complete a collaborative research project totalling up to 15,000 words OR students may choose to undertake a Workshop program. The workshop incorporates, lab work, site visits, guest industry lectures and practical assessment pieces equating to the same number of hours as a placement. The workshop offers students a mix of classroom learning and practical experiences. Students will meet and work with industry professionals and undertake assessment that is practical in nature. All students will submit a final professional portfolio collection of documents, highlighting their practical and theoretical expertise in their profession of choice.

Surveying project

Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

Market report and case study analysis

Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.
