The course provides a high level of clinical experience of treating patients under sedation in supervised sessions. You will learn basic techniques, with introduction to advanced approaches where required. Both practical and theoretical training is given, from initial assessment and treatment planning to delivery, recovery and discharge, for a variety of sedation techniques for dental treatment.

Description

You will study applied basic sciences, conscious sedation, inhalation/intravenous sedation techniques and management of possible complications. The programme is based on self-directed learning, and you will undertake an epidemiological or case-study-based project report with a literature review, in addition to a minimum of 22 days of supervised clinical practice. There will also be an introductory full week (5 days) of lectures and practicals from 8-12 January 2018 and 2 further full study days.

Course purpose

The course is designed for dentists already engaged in the provision of sedation for dentistry, or planning to develop a service, as well as those involved in teaching conscious sedation techniques. It will provide practitioners with the knowledge and skills to use a wide range of conscious sedation techniques with confidence and safety.

Course format and assessment

Modular programme comprising 120 credits: Scientific Basis of Conscious Sedation, examined by written and MCQ examination; Clinical Conscious Sedation, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients, practical and oral examinations; submission of a literature review, with an oral defence of the literature. Attendance at Guy's Campus one day per week from January to June and seven additional study days covering the main modules.

Extra information

As we are seeking to identify your suitability for this clinical environment, we expect our interviewees to adopt the dress code required of clinical dental students at King's. Further information will be given should you choose to apply. Entry to the programme is strictly dependent upon occupational health clearance that you are able to conduct exposure prone procedures (EPPs) before you start clinical work. This will assess your hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C antibody status, HIV and TB status following the completion of a health questionnaire and a further health check before or at enrolment. 

If offered a place on the course, overseas students are advised to be tested locally and send the results of these checks with the questionnaire, prior to a separate full test in the UK at the College's Occupational Health Department before the term begins. All offers of a place on a programme are made subject to a satisfactory criminal conviction disclosure. If you are from overseas or have never lived in the UK before, you should contact the relevant authorities in your home country to arrange for the equivalent check to be conducted and/or a certificate of good conduct to be issued.

This programme is intended for dental practitioners who want to develop competence in providing conscious sedation. The programme has been designed to allow you to gain experience of using inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide and oxygen, and midazolam. You will build your knowledge through distance learning modules and study days, while clinical skills will be developed during supervised clinical practice in Bristol. We aim to produce caring, knowledgeable and skilful practitioners who are competent in the provision of conscious sedation within the limits of the individual clinician.

Programme structure

This modular programme is divided in to three units: Local Anaesthesia, Anxiety Management and Clinical Conscious Sedation.

Local Anaesthesia
Pain and anxiety control are closely linked and treatments under sedation often need to be aborted because of inadequate local anaesthesia. The unit will update students in pharmacology and local anaesthetic techniques, introduce advanced local anaesthetic techniques and provide medical simulator training in the management of the complications of sedation.

Anxiety Management
This unit will provide students with a knowledge and critical understanding of the theoretical framework that underpins cognitive therapy, including self-help and behavioural approaches.

Clinical Conscious Sedation
This unit is designed to prepare those with no experience in conscious sedation to independent practice. It will include supervised clinical practice in Bristol, as well as distance learning and study days where practical skills will be introduced before beginning supervised clinical practice. The unit covers the syllabus on basic sedation techniques published in 2015 by the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry.

As a dental practitioner, this course will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to use intravenous and inhalational sedation techniques on a wide range of anxious patients, including adults and children. We welcome students from all over the UK and Ireland.

The Conscious Sedation in Dentistry PGDip aims to provide you with:

-A systematic understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin conscious sedation and anxiety management in dentistry

-A comprehensive practical understanding of clinical skills in techniques of intravenous and inhalational sedation, as applicable to UK practice in dentistry

-An ability to critically evaluate the evidence-base and clinical issues involved in the safe independent practice of conscious sedation to the highest standard

Delivery

You will undertake substantive self-directed study, including:

-Two written assignments of 2,000 words each

-An oral presentation

-A 6,000 word clinical case dissertation

The Diploma is awarded after satisfactory completion of a final examination at the end of the course.

Although based at Newcastle University, teaching is provided in academic and clinical facilities throughout the northern region (Newcastle, Sunderland and Darlington).

This one year part time course consists of 10 didactic days of lectures and seminars, plus 14 half days of hands-on clinical training in sedation techniques. Didactic and clinical teaching is spaced evenly over a full academic year.

Facilities

Clinical sessions are held in the Sedation Department at Newcastle Dental Hospital and in the Newcastle Community Service, which are fully equipped for all aspects of intravenous and inhalational sedation.

The School of Dental Sciences at Newcastle is one of the most modern and best equipped in the country, occupying a spacious, purpose-built facility. The School is in the same building as the Dental Hospital, adjacent to the Medical School and Royal Victoria Infirmary teaching hospital, forming one of the largest integrated teaching and hospital complexes in the country.

The Course is aimed at primary care dental practitioners providing support for those patients with dental anxiety and undertaking dentistry in a safe, effective and anxiety free manner. It also aims to provide a recognised education and training programme that will equip dentists with the knowledge, skills and experience to safely and independently use conscious sedation techniques in their own clinics. The course leads to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must possess a dental degree, which enables registration with the Dental Council in Ireland. Entry to training in conscious sedation in dentistry would normally follow a two-year period of general professional training post graduation that a student would already have undergone. Applicants must have evidence of satisfactory seroconversion for protection against Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Applicants will be requested to undergo Garda (Police) Vetting. All applicants must upload a separate statement (no more than 300 words in length) stating why they wish to undertake the Diploma.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the required proficiency for admission to this course is an IELTS (academic version) score of 7, with no individual band below 7.

This Postgraduate Certificate programme develops students' knowledge and skills, theoretical and practical competencies in the fast-developing world of sedation and pain management, and is studied part-time over one year. Simulation training in management of medical emergencies is an important component of the programme. It is compliant with UK sedation guidelines.

About this degree

Alongside theoretical training, the programme provides clinical attachments with a programme mentor at accredited sedation clinics in or near London. Students receive training in pre-sedation assessment and how to administer sedation to patients using standard sedation techniques, and observe the criteria set for recovery and discharge of patients after sedation. Students also receive simulation training in the management of medical emergencies during sedation.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules worth 15 credits each.

The global environmental and energy challenge facing current and future generations of architects and building professionals calls for a deeper understanding of the principles of environmental design, and their effective application into architectural practice worldwide. Over the last decades environmental design as a subject area has developed, responding to new research and experimentation, both in academia and in practice. However, buildings claiming to be environmentally conscious do not perform to the expected standards, still heavily contributing to global CO2 emissions and often providing unsatisfactory comfort conditions to occupants. The same can be said for the existing built environment which is largely outdated and underperforming, requiring urgent implementation of effective retrofit strategies. This is due to a lack of comprehensive performance prediction and feedback protocols, which are still not common practice in architectural design.

Course content

Students on this course will take a fresh critical look at this subject. Here you will gain the knowledge and tools to make informed design decisions based on post-occupancy feedback and performance analysis, towards a new paradigm of environmental architecture, which is environmentally and energy conscious, yet sensitive to the contextual and socio-cultural landscape we live in. You will learn environmental design methods which relate to the various stages of architectural design. You will be able to evaluate existing buildings and design new ones following a combined bioclimatic and building occupant focused approach. In the core design modules you will follow an evidence based design approach where the acquisition of specialised software and analytical tools will be directly applied to an evaluation or design project.

Architecture and Environment Design MScThis interdisciplinary and international course will provide you with skills that can be applied to diverse building typologies and global climatic, environmental and contextual issues. On completion of this course you will have a thorough understanding of the principles and methodology of environmental design and will develop critical thinking skills to challenge established practices. You will hold the knowledge and the practical tools to better understand existing buildings for retrofit and to design new ones – positively driving change in this field and moving towards a truly environmentally conscious architecture.

Together, these facilities offer a wide range of drawing, graphics and video applications. The new Fabrication Laboratory includes state-of-the-art CAD-CAM equipment in shape of several 3D printers, laser-cutting machines and computer-controlled drilling machines. Metalworking and woodworking workshops, as well as other support facilities are also available. The course also has access to an environmental laboratory which contains a wide range of testing and monitoring equipment for assessing environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, day-lighting, air velocity and sound; and surveying equipment. Summary

The aim of the course is straightforward, in that it is designed to meet a need for engineers and energy professionals to deliver energy conscious and environmentally sustainable solutions for use by the public, industry, services and government.

It seeks to provide an opportunity for graduates and professionals to acquire knowledge of renewable energy and energy management, and to develop skills appropriate to its practice. To achieve this it seeks to increase capacity for understanding the theoretical concepts and socio-economic principles and techniques upon which renewable energy technologies and energy management strategies are founded. To this end, the course is designed to produce graduates who have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the scientific, technological issues concerning energy systems.

The programme seeks to develop graduates who will have the knowledge, insight and skills to lead programmes of change, new design or retrofit solutions that require the deployment of either or both energy efficiency measures and renewable energy technologies.

The eight taught modules are designed to give students a broad expertise in the ever expanding range of Renewable Energy technologies combined with the more fundamental requirements demanded by Energy Management.

About

The Renewable Energy programme was created to allow BEng graduates to achieve the educational requirements to become a Chartered Engineer under the Engineering Council’s UK-SPEC scheme. The course is currently accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Energy Institute as suitable for further learning towards Chartered Status for engineering graduates. This accreditation has international acceptance under the Washington Accord. Please note that the programme is only suitable as further learning in conjunction with an accredited BEng programme.

Graduates are expected to achieve skills in identifying, developing, analysing and critically appraising solutions and to apply those skills in a professional manner. The students who progress to the MSc from the PgD will also be expected to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research, combined with the management of an independent investigation in an area related to energy technology, with the aim of producing graduates with the capability to pursue a career in research and development through independence, self motivation and initiative.

Course summary

This programme provides the training in counselling and psychotherapy necessary to become eligible for BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) individual practitioner accreditation.

The course, accredited by the BACP, is based on an integrative relational approach to counselling and psychotherapy, which has been developed over many years by our cutting-edge teaching team. Our integrative approach, at the forefront of counselling and psychotherapy theory, practice and research, incorporates aspects from three main therapeutic traditions; person-centred, cognitive and psychodynamic. You will be encouraged to explore psychological processes and experiences from these different perspectives, and recognise the theoretical, personal and cultural assumptions which influence your work.

As well as cognitive and reflective skills, you will also learn practical ways of working with your clients in a therapeutic relationship to address conscious and unconscious needs and produce a change in emotional and cognitive processes and behaviour. This involves integrating complex and advanced skills, and responding creatively to complex, novel and unpredictable situations.

Our teaching includes life-span developmental theories, therapeutic skills practice in small groups, supervision of client work in small groups, critical analysis of approaches and research into counselling and psychotherapy. You will develop a critical understanding of the role of research in the development of the counselling and psychotherapeutic disciplines, and be able to incorporate research knowledge into clinical practice. You are required to be in personal therapy throughout the course, which will help you to develop a high level of awareness of self and the therapeutic process, to be able to use this constructively in therapeutic encounters. You will be equipped with the necessary skills to work with a wide range of people with a range of psychological issues in a variety of settings. 

Content

The Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy programme is taught by means of interactive lectures and seminars, experiential skills workshops, small clinical supervision groups, and personal development work. Much of your learning will be by a process of reflection on the experience of skills practiced and the use of demonstration, observation, self, peer and tutor feedback as well as a more traditional academic study.

The course emphasises the central importance of the therapeutic relationship, and builds your understanding of a variety of theories and practices, to make informed choices about therapeutic interventions suitable for the problems which clients present. Central to developing your therapeutic skills is a sustained effort of attunement to the client as well as openness to and awareness of their and your internal processes. As well as having a theoretical understanding of these processes, from the first year you will have modules allowing you the opportunity to practice your counselling skills.

Later modules in the course will familiarise you with a variety of forms of psychological assessment, so that you are able to critically evaluate the appropriateness and limitations of the procedures and underlying concepts. As many students will go on to work in a multidisciplinary team, in particular within the NHS, they need to have an understanding and working knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses and classification systems, while being aware of their acknowledge limits and critiques.

You will have the opportunity to work with a placements co-ordinator to find a suitable counselling/psychotherapy placement in which to gain the depth and range of experience necessary to become a competent practitioner. Information on over 500 different counselling placements is available.

Intended specifically for students pursuing a career in Architecture, the Professional Diploma course offers a unique combination of design-based academic study and practical hands-on learning. It replaces the ARB Part II validated course, the Professional Diploma in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies, which has been successfully running since 2009

CAT’s 40 years of sustainable education experience has led to the development of courses that not only tackle environmental issues, but focus on sustainability at the core of every aspect of learning. Teaching is delivered in the WISE building - itself an example of recent developments in sustainable construction - and includes a mix of studio- based design work, lectures, seminars and practicals. The annual Summer School enables students to design, detail and build a structure at CAT using the local materials available.

Students are introduced to a range of skills that are increasingly in demand within the building industry. The focus is on designing buildings in their context, to allow for adaptation to the effects of climate change and to create healthy environments for all.

Masters Aims

The M.Arch: Sustainable Architecture is aimed at the architecture student who understands that the world is in a time of transition and that building design plays an important role in environmental impact. Therefore there is great potential within the profession for environmental change and this is pivotal to the entire sustainability debate.
• Aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in architecture and wish to attain a highly credited Part II degree (note: the new M.Arch is currently seeking ARB Part II validation).
• Graduates of this course will understand built environment design in the context of adaptation to sustainability issues.
• Monthly intensive residential study weeks immerse students in their projects.

What qualification will you receive?

Successful completion of the programme at the Centre for Alternative Technology leads to the award of Masters of Architecture (M.Arch) by the University of East London *subject to validation.

Methods of assessment

Students are continuously assessed via essays, reports, presentations and project design work.
There is a final exhibition of students’ designs exhibited in the prestigious WISE building and assessed by external examiners.

The M.Arch: Sustainable Architecture is currently seeking prescription by the Architects Registration Board (ARB). The M.Arch: Sustainable Architecture updates CAT’s existing Part II validated course, the Professional Diploma in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies, which has been successfully running since 2008 . On prescription by ARB it will offer a masters level Part II architecture course and will be subject to periodic reviews, for the purposes of entry onto the United Kingdom Register of Architects. Prescription is normally granted on a four-yearly basis subject to ARB being satisfied that standard requirements have been met.

From spatial master-planning to politics and economics, this MSc gets to the heart of the how the environment must be brought into decision-making. It is among the first such programmes in the UK to put adaptation transformation at the heart of the teaching.
