This course is specifically designed for people who want to enter, or make further progress in, management-level careers in the fast-expanding field of events and conferences. Course content

This course teaches you how and why events/conferences are planned, and how the venues and destinations in which they are held are marketed. The dissertation will give you further opportunity to research a conference or events topic in depth. This course prepares you to enter an exciting and vibrant industry encompassing conferences and exhibitions, cultural and sporting events, festivals and personal events. You study how these are planned, managed and evaluated.

The focus of the course is on the strategic role events play in a modern society, and how they contribute to organisational and community objectives. The most recent evolutions in event strategy are at the core of the course, based on the research of our 25-strong academic research team.

Sheffield Hallam University is one of the top providers of events courses in the UK. As a founder member of the Association of Event Management Educators (AEME), we are involved in establishing academic benchmarks in events education. This innovative course has an innovative format based on a new learning and assessment strategy that puts you at its centre.

You take three core modules designed to replicate the real world, where problems are solved in an integrated way. Instead of studying topics such as events marketing, finance or operations separately, you learn how strategic decisions involve multiple business areas at once. You gain experience problem-solving real or simulated case studies, working with live projects and real clients.

You also choose an option module and complete a work-based-learning module focusing on the event sector of your interest. You are supported by our teaching team, who have a variety of professional backgrounds.

Assessment

Multiple strategies of assessment will be used. Students will get detailed briefings of the assessment and the marking criteria for each unit. Apart from summative feedback, formative feedback will be provided in units to support your learning and to give you the opportunity to enhance your performance.

You are expected to make use of the journals, professional bodies and the media in order to keep up-to-date with information, examples, debates, discussions and events in logistics and supply chain management practice. Your research skills will be developed through lectures and workshops in the unit Business Research Methods. The Advanced Engineering Management Programme (AEMP) is delivered jointly by Birmingham Business School (BBS) and the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS), combining the expertise and strengths of both schools to offer a high quality, distinctive and flexible course.

The programme introduces students to core management concepts in semester one before selecting one of four specialist pathways in semester two. Students also have the opportunity to choose a mixed pathway route, tailoring the course to their requirements.

The Construction Management pathway provides advanced training to graduates to develop their construction management skills enabling them to play leading roles in a professional capacity in both the civil engineering and building industries. The skills gained will provide them with ability to respond to changing requirements of the construction industry in both the UK and overseas. The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and individual projects.

This programme addresses management in the construction industry in its widest sense. The purpose is to provide advanced training to graduates aspiring to higher or middle management positions in the civil engineering and building industries. It addresses the working of those organisations, as well as disciplines and techniques of practical use in the management and implementation of all stages of construction and civil engineering projects. This opens up a wide range of career opportunities, as many of the techniques are applicable both within and outside the construction industry.

The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and an individual project.

Semester one modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Delivered by leading academics in Birmingham Business School (BBS), the management content is research led, drawing on the expertise and reputation of BBS to help deliver a high-quality experience for students. Topics include strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management.

Semester two sees students move into a pathway of their choice, where the key management concepts tackled in the first semester will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links.

This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester one and then to demonstrate their application in semester two before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Engineering Management topic via a 60 credit research project.

Course detail

On this Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management course, you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit. Our courses are designed to be engaging, attractive and flexible in the current global marketplace.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

Capstone project

Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Assessment

In line with the Business School’s commitment to practice-based education, a large part of the assessment will relate to the demonstration of your ability to understand Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management in practice.

It is the expectation of the course that you understand the theory and develop critical thinking skills, which will help you to evaluate the relevance of what you have learnt. All of this comes together by being able to demonstrate rigorous expertise for a business or related organisation.

Course overview

This Masters-level course equips you to be the type of person who can lead a technical team to deliver on time and on budget. You will build on your technical background while adding business and management skills. These skills include project control, supply chain management, risk management and quality optimisation.

Our supportive tutors also help you develop the ‘soft’ skills of working with others and leading projects. For example, you will gain expertise in negotiation and collaboration, effective communication, handling conflict and politics, and managing change.

Modules include ‘Engineering Operations Management’, ‘Project Risk and Quality Management’ and ‘Decision Support for Management’. Your Masters project will involve a real-world project that is supported by a sponsor. It will include both a research and a practical element, and it is an opportunity to impress not only your academic assessors but also potential employers.

Sunderland has long-standing expertise in engineering management and strong links with employers. We host the Institute for Automotive & Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP) which provides problem-solving solutions to manufacturers of all capabilities. We are a leading research group in automotive, manufacturing and maintenance engineering. This research informs our teaching and facilitates your own research as part of your Masters project.

The course is based at our Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. The Campus is on the banks of the River Wear and is less than a mile from the seaside. Extensive links with industry have been created through the course's activities. The course runs popular conferences led by students work, and an international project management conference in association with Wuerzburg Fachhochschule University and the Association for Project Management's 'Inspire' project.

The Centre for Project Management has a UK wide presence, attracting students of project management from across the country. You will have the opportunity to publish papers in local and international conferences hosted by masters students. A research-led approach means that in addition to research developed by staff and students on the course, each individual will have many opportunities to investigate areas of particular interest and relevance.

If you feel that full-time study may be difficult given your other commitments, we offer two options to study part-time that continue to prove extremely popular with professionals from up and down the country. You can study 12 Sundays a year for two years as part of our full day workshops or, alternatively, you can study on weekday evenings on a more regular basis.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship (20 Credits)
Project management might be said to be problem solving. Innovation then becomes the problem solving tool of the project manager. Seen as a key value adding tool, this topic is examined in detail. Parallels are drawn between the entrepreneur and the Project Manager's role.

Programme Management (20 Credits)
Managing several projects in a coordinated way to successfully implement a strategy is typically referred to as 'Programme Management'. Many project managers will have more than one project to deliver. Understanding the advantageous of coordination, performance monitoring and benefits management will enhance all your projects and equip you to oversee and enhance the delivery of a group of them.

Project Strategy (20 Credits)
To understand, translate, and evaluate the strategic environment and understand its impact on project and programme delivery.

Strategy, Economics & Finance (20 Credits)

The sector - ranging from international hotel chains, airlines and tour operators to conference venues, tourist boards and government organisations - is one of the most diverse and exciting industries around, providing management opportunities worldwide in business operations, marketing, sales, customer service, HR, research, logistics and policy. Employment in this sector is set to grow over the next few years and the demand for senior and specialised roles will increase.

To excel in this industry you need to be a good leader, manager, entrepreneur and show awareness of the ethical, cultural, environmental and social settings within which you are working.

This Masters degree helps prepare you for this. We encourage an entrepreneurial and questioning approach to the industry, examining growth and development through the prism of social responsibility and sustainability. The degree also emphasises the management of strategic issues that arise in the sector, through the specialist modules of marketing, business development and management, leadership and cross cultural management.

Field trip

Postgraduate students enrolled in the MSc International Tourism and Hospitality Management join a residential five day trip Semester 2. For the last three years we have been to Belfast where we study the processes of city marketing. On your return we analyse the issues that the city faces in becoming a competitive destination and you write a City Marketing plan for Belfast.

International Tourism and Hospitality Management Top-up

If you already hold the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management from either the Confederation for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) or the Organisations for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) you can top-up your qualification to a full MSc by studying a research methods module and researching and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

The degree is jointly delivered with ESHotels in Paris enabling you to integrate with students from this course when you jointly participate on a field trip.

Part-time = two modules a year for three years then dissertation in Year 4; or four modules in Year 1 then two modules plus the dissertation in Year 2, with dissertation extending into Year 3.

Teaching and learning

Classroom teaching includes a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops and guest lectures from industry stakeholders. We undertake a real life business development scenario with our industry partner Merlin Entertainments and undertake a residential field trip in Semester 2.

The nature of the teaching and assessment will allow you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to their preferred setting (e.g. public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; UK, European or International).

We are currently negotiating a partnership with InHolland University, Amsterdam, where you could study Semester 1 in Amsterdam and complete Semester 2 and the dissertation at LSBU (This option is open to UK and EU students only).

Academic expertise

Department staff are experts in their respective fields of urban, environment, tourism, heritage and leisure and related educational policy. Many have professional affiliations, appointed positions and research links, for example with the Association for Tourism in Higher Education, Local Economy, The Landscape Research Group, The Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM), the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Tourism Society. We integrate these links into our teaching wherever possible.

Tools and knowledge

The course develops the appropriate skills, tools and knowledge to operate innovatively in the global tourism and hospitality environments. The nature of the teaching and assessment allows you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to your preferred setting (e.g public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; related policy and government organisations; UK, European or international).

Placements

If you are a home or EU student you may wish to consider undertaking a voluntary year-long work placement in the UK or overseas to gain, extend or seek variety in your experience within the industry prior to studying with us. If you undertake such a placement you may use this as the basis for an extended industry-related management project instead of the traditional dissertation. This is subject to prior approval by the Course Director and must be an investigation into an aspect of management that is worthy of investigation and is subject to the usual academic discipline.

This option is not open to overseas students, as Home Office regulations mean that overseas students are unable to get a visa for the placement year.

Professional links

We have a wide range of industry speakers on the course and you undertake a range of projects that bring you into contact with managers from the sector. In particular, you'll undertake a research project for the global attractions company Merlin Entertainments in Semester 1 where you analyse their operations and policies, develop solutions to a particular challenge and report back directly to their managers.

International Tourism as a career

Tourism is an international service industry and so you can probably expect a busy, fast-paced job wherever you decide to specialise, interacting with different people and organisations around the globe.

Our LSBU post graduates work around the world. Many work for international companies, tourist boards, policy and development institutes, acquiring senior management skills as they progress.

The nature of the industry - the large majority of organisations in the sector are small to medium enterprises (SMEs) - also provides opportunities for you to start your own business. Web-based tour operations, restaurants and events management companies are all popular options for start-ups. You certainly have choices over the route you take into this vast sector.

Career progression

There is a worldwide shortage of well qualified tourism and hospitality managers, particularly in Asia, and this professional Masters qualification will help you to progress your career. If you are academically minded this could also be a positive step towards a PhD and academic career.
