This course is specifically designed for people who want to enter, or make further progress in, management-level careers in the fast-expanding field of events and conferences. Course content

This course teaches you how and why events/conferences are planned, and how the venues and destinations in which they are held are marketed. You study how these are planned, managed and evaluated. The focus of the course is on the strategic role events play in a modern society, and how they contribute to organisational and community objectives. The most recent evolutions in event strategy are at the core of the course, based on the research of our 25-strong academic research team.

Sheffield Hallam University is one of the top providers of events courses in the UK. As a founder member of the Association of Event Management Educators (AEME), we are involved in establishing academic benchmarks in events education. This innovative course has an innovative format based on a new learning and assessment strategy that puts you at its centre.

You take three core modules designed to replicate the real world, where problems are solved in an integrated way. Assessment

Multiple strategies of assessment will be used. Students will get detailed briefings of the assessment and the marking criteria for each unit. Apart from summative feedback, formative feedback will be provided in units to support your learning and to give you the opportunity to enhance your performance.

You are expected to make use of the journals, professional bodies and the media in order to keep up-to-date with information, examples, debates, discussions and events in logistics and supply chain management practice. You are also encouraged to attend relevant networking groups and more formal lecture/seminar sessions organised by the department, the faculty and the university. Your research skills will be developed through lectures and workshops in the unit Business Research Methods. Here you will be introduced to various research methods, such as survey, interview, focus group, action research, and various quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques. Through the final Logistics and Supply Chain Management Project, you will be able to apply some of these methods and techniques to carry out independent research.

This programme offers a unique curriculum in which project management is embedded into logistics and supply chain process management, including procurement, production, distribution and customer service, with a diverse range in design and structures.

It embraces the latest information and communications technology skills applied to logistics, and covers global supply chain management business strategies for organisations doing business in the global arena.

This programme offers a unique curriculum that includes many practical examples of logistics and supply chain management (SCM) in action. We are one of very few university programmes in the UK which has been accredited by both the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS). This means that students are recognised by these professional bodies as holding their professional qualifications to full professional status level 6 upon completion of the Masters programme. Students participate in CILT and CIPS activities including the CILT annual student conference. Students will visit industrial locations, have seminars given by guest speakers from industry and collaborate with business partners for dissertation projects.

In the final stage of the programme, all students will undertake a consultant project organised by the university, which has been highly valued by previous students.

The Advanced Engineering Management Programme (AEMP) is delivered jointly by Birmingham Business School (BBS) and the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS), combining the expertise and strengths of both schools to offer a high quality, distinctive and flexible course.

The programme introduces students to core management concepts in semester one before selecting one of four specialist pathways in semester two. Students also have the opportunity to choose a mixed pathway route, tailoring the course to their requirements.

The Construction Management pathway provides advanced training to graduates to develop their construction management skills enabling them to play leading roles in a professional capacity in both the civil engineering and building industries. The skills gained will provide them with ability to respond to changing requirements of the construction industry in both the UK and overseas. The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and individual projects.

This programme addresses management in the construction industry in its widest sense. The purpose is to provide advanced training to graduates aspiring to higher or middle management positions in the civil engineering and building industries. It addresses the working of those organisations, as well as disciplines and techniques of practical use in the management and implementation of all stages of construction and civil engineering projects. This opens up a wide range of career opportunities, as many of the techniques are applicable both within and outside the construction industry.

The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and an individual project.

Semester one modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Delivered by leading academics in Birmingham Business School (BBS), the management content is research led, drawing on the expertise and reputation of BBS to help deliver a high-quality experience for students. Topics include strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management.

Semester two sees students move into a pathway of their choice, where the key management concepts tackled in the first semester will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links.

This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester one and then to demonstrate their application in semester two before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Engineering Management topic via a 60 credit research project.

There is an undiminishing national and global demand for construction professionals who are skilled in the medium of construction management, project management, health and safety, construction economics and facilities management. This fact, together with the ever-increasing demand for blended e-learning provision in this subject area, ensures strong interest in this MSc programme.

The first sixteen-week stage of the Postgraduate Certificate, commencing in January, starts with the module Construction Management Skills. This first module allows plenty of time to acclimatise to the electronic system of teaching and learning as well as the subject matter itself. If you already hold the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management from either the Confederation for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) or the Organisations for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) you can top-up your qualification to a full MSc by studying a research methods module and researching and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

The degree is jointly delivered with ESHotels in Paris enabling you to integrate with students from this course when you jointly participate on a field trip.

- Critical issues in tourism and hospitality industry
The module explores and analyses current policy issues in the tourism and hospitality sector as well as how these are interpreted by various stakeholders, how these stakeholders develop their policy preferences on these issues and how they deal with opposition and collaborations to further their goals.
The module will relate mostly to policy-making theory, but will also investigate the often chaotic and complex nature of the tourism and hospitality sector and what impacts this has on trying to set out a clear and unambiguous policy arena within which the industry and resources it depends upon can flourish.

- City marketing
Cities, be they historic, seaside, regional or capital, are the power houses of the tourism and hospitality industry. They shape and are shaped by tourism and hospitality which has become a major economic driver and re-imaging agent of city governance agencies as they seek to re-invent their themselves in the new global order. This module seeks to explain the role of tourism and hospitality and the visitor economy in the modern city and to critically analyse this in relation to a number of theoretical perspectives. The module will equip you with a critical understanding of broader perspectives required to manage and market tourism in the modern city and inform city marketing strategies.

- Cross-cultural management
This module examines concepts of culture and its multifaceted impacts on managerial behaviour in the tourism and hospitality industry. It reviews situations and issues that managers have to meet and resolve when working internationally. This module brings together knowledge, understanding, different interpretations and critical analysis of the contexts and issues relating to cross-cultural management.

- Business and management strategy
The module integrates the learning of management and enterprise theory with the practical processes of developing a business idea to the point of the completion of a business plan aimed to attract the financial backing.The module will cover theories of corporate strategy and strategic choice, human resource development, enterprise and business planning.

This module, using theory and practice, explores how organisations in both the public and private sector address the key marketing challenges posed by an increasingly competitive environment. It looks at how they develop tactical and strategic responses, research and reach audiences, mount campaigns, create global brands, manage reputation and the importance of working in partnerships and networks to do this.

- Professional leadership
The module focuses on the active, professional aspects of leadership studies and starts from the assumption that all successful organised activity is initiated by leadership of some sort. Alongside engaging with contemporary theoretical perspectives, students will be encouraged to learn from their own and others experiences of leadership in practice, and to engage in classroom activities which enable them to develop their own leadership aptitude.

The relevance of the final year project is to give you the opportunity to undertake a piece of primary research and analysis and to enable them to manage your own learning under the guidance of a tutor. You'll choose your own topic, which should show originality and should offer a worthwhile contribution to the existing 'body of knowledge'. The module is double weighted and will be supported by a taught research methods programme that will incorporate the elements crucial for the completion of an in depth research project.

- Extended management report
Part-time = two modules a year for three years then dissertation in Year 4; or four modules in Year 1 then two modules plus the dissertation in Year 2, with dissertation extending into Year 3.

We have a wide range of industry speakers on the course and you undertake a range of projects that bring you into contact with managers from the sector. In particular, you'll undertake a research project for the global attractions company Merlin Entertainments in Semester 1 where you analyse their operations and policies, develop solutions to a particular challenge and report back directly to their managers.

Placements

If you are a home or EU student you may wish to consider undertaking a voluntary year-long work placement in the UK or overseas to gain, extend or seek variety in your experience within the industry prior to studying with us. If you undertake such a placement you may use this as the basis for an extended industry-related management project instead of the traditional dissertation. This is subject to prior approval by the Course Director and must be an investigation into an aspect of management that is worthy of investigation and is subject to the usual academic discipline.

This option is not open to overseas students, as Home Office regulations mean that overseas students are unable to get a visa for the placement year.

Teaching and learning

Classroom teaching includes a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops and guest lectures from industry stakeholders. We undertake a real life business development scenario with our industry partner Merlin Entertainments and undertake a residential field trip in Semester 2.

The nature of the teaching and assessment will allow you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to their preferred setting (e.g. public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; UK, European or International).

We are currently negotiating a partnership with InHolland University, Amsterdam, where you could study Semester 1 in Amsterdam and complete Semester 2 and the dissertation at LSBU (This option is open to UK and EU students only).

Academic expertise

Department staff are experts in their respective fields of urban, environment, tourism, heritage and leisure and related educational policy. Many have professional affiliations, appointed positions and research links, for example with the Association for Tourism in Higher Education, Local Economy, The Landscape Research Group, The Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM), the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Tourism Society. The market for postgraduate qualifications in logistics and supply chain management (SCM) has been growing rapidly. Companies are demanding that senior managers are better qualified and better prepared to address the deeper issues involved in the twin goals of cost reduction and service enhancement.

This programme offers a unique curriculum that includes many practical examples of logistics and SCM in action. We are one of very few university programmes in the UK which has been accredited by both the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS). This means that students are recognised by these professional bodies as holding their professional qualifications to full professional status level 6 upon completion of the Masters programme. Students participate in CILT and CIPS activities including the CILT student conference. This puts you in touch with great people from across the industry, and once a year we all come together to hear about developments in the sector at our Annual HR Research Conference.

Teaching and learning

This part-time course is principally delivered through half-day and evening workshops. Workshops involve tutor input, analysis of case studies, problem-solving activities, virtual business simulations, presentations, analysis of data for decision making, and directed reading and research. Some skills development is best addressed in more intensive workshop modes

These intensive workshops will focus principally on:
- team building
- problem solving and time management
- people management skill sets (eg. interviewing, negotiating, managing disciplinary and grievances)
- leadership and influencing skills
- data handling and presentation skills using IT applications and statistical techniques

Teaching staff are drawn primarily from the Department of Business and Management within the Business School. There are some contributions from specialists in other departments. Visiting speakers from business and industry, local government, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually with a range of assessment methods being used. These include individual assignments, group work, examinations, a CPD portfolio and research reports. Some assessments include an element of peer and/or self-assessment. Some aspects of learning are managed by participants who meet regularly in action learning groups to share their experiences, which helps build practice-based human resource knowledge.

Specialist facilities

Our Business School Postgraduate Centre at Wheatley Campus has a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, well equipped seminar rooms and a postgraduate lounge and private study area.

The Wheatley Campus library provides specialist business resources including 1,000 sets of UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses in business and management and business examination papers.

Attendance pattern

The course is principally delivered through 12 weekly half-day and evening workshops. One full weekend plus three single day events are also provided in the certificate stage and one weekend in the diploma stage.

- You will develop practical knowledge, expertise and valuable insights from visiting HR professionals and specialists from a wide range of industries who run workshops and deliver lectures.

- Through workshops and group working you meet HR professionals, develop your team working skills and build long-lasting networks, enabling you to share your experiences as you progress in your career.

- This programme is an excellent way of providing you with a springboard for progress in your career in HR. The programme enjoys a high completion rate and is supported by a tutorial team comprising research active and experienced HR practitioners.

Careers

Students who complete the programme achieve career progression to more senior roles in HR such as senior adviser or business partner. Completion of the MA provides the skills and conceptual abilities to seek senior management roles in HR.

We regularly welcome students from established organisations such as the NHS, Oxford University, BMW, Oxfam and Williams F1 Team onto the course.

Free language courses for students - the Open Module

Free language courses are available to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students on many of our courses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

Please note that the free language courses are not available if you are:
- studying at a Brookes partner college
- studying on any of our teacher education courses or postgraduate education courses.

Research within the department of Business and Management brings together corporate strategy, competitive strategy, growth strategies, global business, international trade and foreign direct investment with subjects that focus on leadership, culture, motivation, practices, strategic human resource management and the management of the globalisation process.

Stemming from the nature of the department, this research covers a very wide range of subjects in the disciplinary area. Some examples within the field of human resource management include:
- employee relations;
- labour economics and reward strategies;
- migration labour;
- international human resource management;
- employee welfare and stress management;
- equal opportunities and diversity management.
