Throughout the duration of your course, you will participate in group work to complete practical tasks that simulate real-life situations and experience standard professional practice. You will be expected to engage in independent study involving directed and self-directed learning.

You will also have one-to-one support on your preparation for and the execution of your final project, where you will be able to specialise in an area of interest.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research.

Significant emphasis is placed on developing your ability to complete a Masters degree. As part of induction you will be made fully familiar with the learning resources and support available to you. MSc in Computing and Information Technology

This programme provides you with an advanced understanding of Computing and Information Technology. You will develop a critical understanding of the issues associated with using computing systems and their impact on business processes and project management. As well as developing an appreciation of theoretical and research aspects in the field, you acquire practical and evaluative skills in using computing technologies, and developing and maintaining computing systems. The programme also provides the opportunity to develop programming skills, allowing the possibility of undertaking a programming-related dissertation project.

All MSc students take a Core Skills module, covering essential academic skills. Students taking the specialist Computer Science or HCI degrees also take an Object-Oriented Programming module, to provide a common practical foundation for coursework in the modules that follow. Students on specialist degree programmes take a number of designated modules appropriate to the particular field. With careful module choice, it is sometimes possible to keep open several different specialist options until the second semester.

During the final three months of the course, you undertake an extended project agreed with staff, culminating in writing a substantial individual dissertation. Students on specialist degrees undertake a project in the chosen area.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Computer Science and Informatics Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

The course is delivered in four major blocks that offer an intensive but focused learning pattern, with two entry opportunities for applicants every year – February and September. Full-time students will typically spend 12 hours in classes each week. If you choose to study part-time, this is reduced to around six hours each week. You will also need to work independently on reading, coursework assignments and other computer related activities. .

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Assessment

The majority of units are assessed through coursework, group and individual projects, portfolios, essays, presentations or exams. Presentations are usually given and assessed in a group seminar. You will also produce artefacts in the area of your specialism.

Constant feedback and advice from a supervisory or unit team will be provided to support you in your work.

You will progress from well-defined briefs to more open-ended and challenging assessments, which culminate in your major project – the MSc Project – where you will be given freedom to choose your area of work.

You will gain valuable skills for a career within computing and IT in particular but is also relevant for a much wider range of applications such as computer science or wider system engineering.

The unit 'Research Methodologies and Project Management' requires you to work in a team so as to apply a current project management methodology that embraces all of these knowledge areas in an integrated way while going through the stages of planning, execution and project control. You will work as part of a team, take responsibility and make autonomous decisions that impact on the project team performance.

The focus of the course is on the three recent movements within IT industry: Cloud Computing, Big Data and Internet of Things. The course will be based on development tools and software technologies for data, system and service development, Cloud Computing, Big Data, Internet of Things and Information Security. It will also make use of new technologies for integration of embedded devices such as Arduino and Raspberry. Students will be able to choose options from Mobile application development, cybercrime and security, data and visualisation or work related learning before embarking on the project.

The course provides preparation and training which encourages students seeking positions within the financial, retail and entertainment sectors. It incorporates materials for professional training, which prepare you for professional certification in Oracle SQL, Java Enterprise and Hortonworks Data Platform.

The extensive collaboration between the School of Computing and industries in London resulted in numerous Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and Consultancy Projects. These won a number of national awards and made London Met graduates renowned for their high starting salaries. Due to the high demand for specialists in this area, students on the course can rely on help in finding jobs both in the numerous high-tech startups as well as big financial organisations in the City of London.

The method of assessment for each module is clearly described in the individual module guide which is made available to the students at the start of the semester. Professional accreditation

This course is not currently accredited, however, students who wish to pursue professional certification will be assisted to sit the certification exams in Databases, Java Enterprise and Apache Hadoop by Oracle and Hortonworks.

The course has a September start with three semesters spread over one academic year. Each semester is 60 credits with the final semester dedicated to your dissertation.

Guided by academics with a wealth of industrial experience, this is an intensive MSc programme for highly motivated graduates of any discipline with little prior experience of computer science.

Industrial Experience

The industrial placement currently takes place towards the end of the first year for a maximum of 12 months. It is the student’s responsibility to secure their placement, the school will offer guidance and support in finding and securing the placement but the onus is on the student to secure the job and arrange the details of the placement.

Currently if you are not able to secure a placement by the end of your second semester we will transfer you onto the 1 year FT taught programme without the Industrial Experience, this change would also be applied to any visa if you were here on a student visa.

The industrial placement consists of 8-12 months spent working with an appropriate employer in a role that relates directly to your field of study. The placement is currently undertaken between the taught component and the project. This will provide you with the opportunity to apply the key technical knowledge and skills that you have learnt in your taught modules, and will enable you to gain a better understanding of your own abilities, aptitudes, attitudes and employment potential. The module is only open to students enrolled on a programme of study with integrated placement.
