This MA responds to the pressing need for a high quality postgraduate degree serving the computer games and entertainment industries. The emphasis is on games design, art and animation, and will also develop the fundamentals of computer programming, entrepreneurship/business, and your own practice. You'll also be able to work with industry partners.
The computer games and interactive entertainment business is a fast-growing multi-billion dollar worldwide business, with games platforms from handhelds and mobiles including iPhones, iPads and Android phones, through consoles such as the Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintento Wii U, to PCs and massively-multiplayer online games involving tens of thousands of people.
This MA will produce graduates who are well-positioned to have a career in this exciting worldwide industry, meeting the strong demand for graduate computer games designers and artists in the UK and abroad. The programme is delivered by a mix of professionals from the games and effects industries and from the research world.

This programme is aimed at students with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. You will learn to master the theoretical foundations in the field and how to integrate them with other technologies.
Computer science is one of the most dynamic and expansive fields of science. In addition to having a deep understanding of the theoretical and technical foundations, professionals in this field must be able to apply the technology to challenging problems, and integrate it with other technologies. Applicants should have an adequate background in computer science and good programming skills.
The first three semesters include not only core courses in theoretical computer science and programming, but also elective courses such as artificial intelligence, databases and data mining, the design and programming of computer games, information security, advanced computer graphics, and human-computer interaction. Most courses feature lectures in theory and techniques, which are applied in practical laboratory work. Some courses also feature projects and seminars.

It is not mandatory to follow a specialisation – you may also tailor your own combination of courses, with full freedom of choice. All specialisations are offered in Linköping, except Visualisation and Computer Graphics, which is given at Campus Norrköping.
In the final semester you write a thesis, either on your own or with a fellow student. The work may be carried out in collaboration with a company, or as a research project with the university.

You will learn specialist computer science techniques and fundamental theories, but you’ll also have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice by developing applications and working with real software. We cover a range of topics, including real time graphics and computational science, and you can choose from options including artificial intelligence, robotics and visualisation – built upon a solid foundation of good programming skills.
The course begins each September each year and lasts twelve months. There are two trimesters of taught modules, followed by an individual dissertation project during the third trimester. There is an option to take an extra trimester – immediately before the dissertation, adding an extra three months of study but letting you gain insights into industry through a module based on commercial practice, typically working with commercial clients and software.
The Department of Computer Science creates an excellent experience for students, with a supportive student community. We are also affiliated with Microsoft’s DreamSpark programme, which allows you to access the latest Microsoft operating systems and development software for home use. Once registered with the department, you can download the software free of charge.
This MSc programme is designed to support students with various levels of computing and programming practice experience. However, it is particularly suited to those with significant experience of writing code.
There is a focus on the transition to further postgraduate study, with suitable content on professional skills and the importance of ethics for practising computer scientists.
In lectures you’ll benefit from a range of techniques, from interpreting complex ideas through interactive discussions, to live programming or other problem-solving demonstrations.
Teaching and learning
We place a strong emphasis on practical laboratory sessions. These will significantly develop your core computer science skills, and enhance your employability through exposure to commercial projects.
As teamwork plays a key role in commercial software development and has great value as an employable skill, group work is used in a number of modules.
Practical coursework is the main form of assessment, and you will design, build and test software solutions to a variety of problems. Written coursework is used to complement this. The largest assessment is the dissertation.

The MSc Advanced Computer Science programme is designed to open pathways to postgraduate research, as well as a wide range of careers. The computational science module introduces concepts and ideas which will help prepare you for further study; the industrial placement option, meanwhile, will enable you to practise your skills and knowledge of computer science in situ, giving you a useful insight and advantage when it comes to starting your career.

The Spatial Data Science and Visualisation MRes teaches cutting-edge data analysis, mining, modelling and visualisation techniques for spatial systems. Students carry out their own research project, supported by academics, researchers and students in one of the most exciting, interdisciplinary research teams in the field, within The Bartlett, UCL's Faculty of the Built Environment.
Students gain a grounding in the principles and skills of spatial research, data analysis and visualisation and virtual environments, and develop an understanding of research methodology and methods of data collection and analysis. Subject-specific modules provide students with the opportunity to develop skills in spatial analysis and to contribute to current debates in the field.
The programme consists of four core modules (60 credits), a group mini-project (30 credits) and a research dissertation (90 credits).
There are no optional modules on this programme.
All students submit a research dissertation of 10-12,000 words and 5,000-words in the form of a paper for publication.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical-based workshops and classes. The interlinked laboratory research-based mini project with data collection focuses on ‘remote data mining’ rather than fieldwork in the traditional planning/geographical/architectural sense. Assessment is through group and individual projects and the dissertation.

The Spatial Data Science and Visualisation MRes offers a unique skillset in computation mapping, visualisation and spatial research, with recent graduates working at Ordnance Survey and the BBC, as well as a number continuing to PhDs. Through our PhD partners, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and substantial outreach, CASA is well-connected to the world outside academia.
Research-led skills are becoming increasingly key in shaping our understanding of complex spatial functions. Vast amounts of previously unused data are becoming available either from changes in accessibility, the nature of network and cloud-based computing, changing national data policies or more widely as a result of new mass data collection methodologies.
The Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) is a research centre specialising in computer-based methods such as GIS, urban simulation, mapping, data visualisation, and 3D environments in cities and space.
Graduates from our programme will have been exposed to a range of programming languages (Processing, R, Python and MySQL), 3D visualisation packages, and a substantive grounding in GIS, programming structure, mathematical methods and data design.

This exciting and challenging programme studies how data can be utilised to solve major business and societal challenges. The programme provides students with the knowledge, technical ability and skills for leadership roles in the fields of business analytics and data science.
The programme is designed to give students multidisciplinary skills in computing (i.e. programming, big data), analytics (i.e. data mining, machine learning, computational statistics, complexity), and business analysis. Emphasis will be on business problem framing, leveraging data as a strategic asset, and communicating complex analytical results to stakeholders.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of three core modules (45 credits), four or five optional modules (60 to 75 credits), up to one elective module (15 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).
Students must choose a minimum of 60 and a maxuimum of 75 credits from Optional modules. A maximum of 15 credits may be taken from Electives.

During the summer students will undertake a work placement with a UCL industrial partner. The research and data analysis conducted during this placement will form the basis of a 10,000-word dissertation.
