Facilities

The Department of Computer Science is well equipped for teaching, and is continually upgrading its laboratories to ensure equipment is up-to-date – equipment is never more than three years old, and rarely more than two. Currently, Computer Science students use three fully networked laboratories: one, running Windows; another running Linux; and a project laboratory, containing specialised equipment. These laboratories support a wide range of software, including the programming languages Java, C# and the .net framework, C, C++, Haskell and Prolog among many; integrated programme development environments such as Visual Studio and Netbeans; the widely-used Microsoft Office package; web access tools; and many special purpose software tools including graphical rendering and image manipulation tools; expert system production tools; concurrent system modelling tools; World Wide Web authoring tools; and databases.

As part of our expansion, we are building the Computational Foundry on our Bay Campus for computer and mathematical sciences. This development is exciting news for Swansea Mathematics who are part of the vibrant and growing community of world-class research leaders drawn from computer and mathematical sciences.

Computer Science is one of the drivers of technological progress in all economic and social spheres. Those graduating with an M.Sc. in Computer Science are specialists in at least one field of computer science who have wide-ranging science-based methodological expertise.
Graduates are able to define, autonomously and comprehensively, computer science problems and their applications, structure them and build abstract models. Moreover, they are able to define and implement solutions that are at the state of the art of technology and science.

1) Algorithms and Mathematical Modelling: This module teaches you about determinstic and stochastic algorithms, their implementation, evaluation and optimisation. You will acquire advanced knowledge of computer-based mathematical methods – particularly in the areas of algorithmic algebra and computational stochastics – as well as developing an in-depth expertise in mathematical modelling and complexity analysis of discrete and continuous problems.
2) Programming and Software Systems: This module imparts modern methods for constructing large-scale software systems, as well as creating and using software authoring, analysis and optimisation tools. In this module you will consolidate your knowledge of the various programming paradigms and languages, the structure of language processing systems, and learn to deal with parallelism in program procedures.
3) Information and Communication Systems: In this module you will study the interactions of the classic computer science areas of information systems and computer networks. This focus area represents an answer to the problem of increasing volume and complexity of worldwide information distribution and networks, and for the growing requirements on quality and performance of computer communication. Additionally, you will learn to transfer database results to multimedia data.
4) Intelligent Technical Systems: In this module you are acquainted with digital image and signal processing, embedded systems and applications of intelligent technical systems in industrial and assistance systems, which are necessary for production automation and process control, traffic control, medical and building technology. You will learn to develop complex applications using computer systems and deal with topics such as image reconstruction, camera calibration, sensor data fusion and optical measurement technology.
5) IT Security and Reliability: This module group is concerned with security and reliability of IT systems, e.g. in hardware circuitry and communication protocols, as well as complex, networked application systems. To ensure the secure operation of these systems you will learn design methodology, secure architectures and technical implementation of the underlying components.

Language requirements

Unless English is your native language or the language of your secondary or undergraduate education, you should provide an English language certificate at level B2 CEFR, e.g. TOEFL with a minimum score of 567 PBT, 87 iBT or ITP 543 (silver); IELTS starting from 5.5; or an equivalent language certificate.

To facilitate daily life in Germany, it would be beneficial for you to have German language skills at level A1 CEFR (beginner’s level). If you do not have any German skills when starting out on the programme, you will complete a compulsory beginner’s German course during your first year of study.

About the Program

This international oriented 2-year master’s degree programme is based on the following pillars:
▪ The study of a range of topics within the field of human-computer interaction: usability, user-centred design and user interface testing and research, and innovative interface technologies such as virtual reality, mobile systems, adaptive systems, mixed reality, ubiquitous computing and graphic interfaces.
▪ Acquisition of key skills and competences through a project-based study approach.

In the English-language Human-Computer Interaction M.Sc. programme, students focus on theoretical and practical issues in current computer science research in the fields of user-centered design, interactive system development and evaluation. In addition, this technically-oriented HCI master offers the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary projects and attend courses from Architecture and Urbanism, Art and Design, Media Studies and Media Management.

In general, our programme aims at people with a bachelor’s degree or minor in computer science. The medium of instruction for all mandatory courses is English. The program has received accreditation by Acquin until 30.09.2020 in April 2015.

Program Structure

The programme comprises 120 ECTS, distributed into the following components:
▪ Four compulsory modules (Advanced HCI, Information Processing and Presentation, Virtual/Augmented Reality and Mobile HCI), each comprising 9 ECTS.
▪ Elective module (24 ECTS in total).
▪ Two research projects (15 ECTS each).
▪ The Master’s thesis module (30 ECTS).

In accordance with the Weimar Bauhaus model, research-oriented projects contribute towards a large proportion of the master’s programme. The elective modules allows students to incorporate courses from other degree programmes such as Media Studies, Media Management, Architecture and Urbanism, and Art and Design alongside the general Computer Science and Media course catalogue. Graded language courses up to 6 ECTS may also be included, or an additional HCI related project. The fourth and final semester is dedicated to the master’s thesis.

Career Perspectives

The HCI Master was developed based upon our experiences with the long-standing Computer Science & Media Master program. CS&M graduates have all readily found employment in industry and academia, in R&D departments at large companies (e.g. Volkswagen, BMW), research institutes (e.g. Fraunhofer), as well as at universities, with many continuing into a PhD.

Usability is becoming more and more important for computer systems as computers are embedded in many aspects of everyday life. The ability to design complex systems and interfaces with regard to usability and appropriateness for the usage context increases in importance. HCI graduates can work both in software development, in particular in conception and development of novel interface technologies, and in the area of usability and user research, which both grow in demand on the job market. Our unique project-based study approach provides graduates with a skill set that qualifies them both for research and industry careers.

A tie to this history was established in the renaming as Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in 1996. We are an international university in the unique, cultural city of Weimar. Higher Education Entrance Qualification:

Students need a school leaving certificate for studies completed at secondary education level. The formal entrance qualifications for international students are checked by uni-assist (see application process).

Academic Background in Computer Science (CS):

You need some academic background in CS, such as a bachelor's degree in CS, business informatics, HCI or related areas with a focus on CS and HCI. Students with a minor in computer science (at least 60 European Credit Points) may apply, here, decisions are on a case-by-case-base.

Only diplomas of international accredited universities will be accepted. Non-academic, practical experience in computer science alone does not suffice to qualify you.

Sufficient Marks from previous studies:

If the converted credit-weighted average grade of your Bachelor's degree is between 1.0 and 2.0 in the German system, your chances of acceptance are very good. Uni-assist does the conversion into the German system.

The medium of instruction is English, some electives can be taken in German. B2 level (CEFR) of English proficiency is needed. We require a standardised language certificate (unless your bachelor degree was done in a native-English speaking country). We accept three types of language proficiency certificates:

TOEFL (80 internet-based, 550 paper-based at minimum)
IELTS (6.0 minimum)
ESOL Cambridge First Certificate in English

To be admitted, international students have to provide proof of German proficiency at level A1 (CEFR). This is required for registration to the program. You can apply before having the A1 certificate, but might need to show you are registered for the exam for your visum.

This is an advanced programme that provides Computing graduates with advanced knowledge and skills in the emerging growth area of Data Analytics. It includes advanced topics such as Large-Scale Data Analytics, Information Retrieval, Advanced Topics in Machine Learning and Data Mining, Natural Language Processing, Data Visualisation and Web-Mining. It also includes foundational modules in topics such as Statistics, Regression Analysis and Programming for Data Analytics. Students on the programme further deepen their knowledge of Data Analytics by working on a project either in conjunction with a research group or with an industry partner.

Program Structure

Our interdisciplinary curriculum emphasises computer science and builds bridges to social sciences, economics, law, linguistics and mathematics. All mandatory courses are taught in English.

The curriculum is organized in seven module groups:

Foundations of Web Science (two modules) establishes the main idea of Web Science. It provides an interdisciplinary primary view of the web and of more abstract web structures.

The Computer Science track (three modules) teaches the essential technical aspects, namely web engineering, semantic web and web retrieval.

Web and Society (two out of four modules) considers interaction of the web and different user groups: citizens, customers, entrepreneurs, and interest groups.

The module group Elective Courses in Computer Science provides a wide range of technical topics. Modules may be choosen freely from all Master courses in computer science with relevance to the web given at the University of Koblenz-Landau (three modules or more, mininum 18 ECTS).

Elective Interdisciplinary Courses contain web-related modules offered by our university from other disciplines (such as economy, social sciences, linguistics, anthropology, communication theory etc.). Students have to freely elect at least two modules (12 ECTS).

Topics for seminars and research lab can be freely chosen from Web Science subjects. Furthermore, this module group contains a social skills and leadership training..

The topic of the master's thesis can also be freely chosen from any Web Science subjects.

Requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification -

It is a legal requirement in Germany that students own a Higher education entrance qualification („Hochschulzugangsberechtigung“) respectively a Master entrance qualification („Masterzugangsberechtigung“), proven by school leaving certificates or studies completed at secondary education level.

Entrance qualification is not checked by us, but uni-assist (see application process), therefore please refrain from asking us if your diploma will be accepted. Uni-assist provides some further information on higher education entrance qualification.

bachelor's degree in computer science, business informatics, Computervisualistik (as offered by the University of Koblenz-Landau), Information management (as offered by the University of Koblenz-Landau until 2012 if 60 ECTS in computer science were acquired) or similar.

Students with a minor in computer science (at least 60 European Credit Points) can apply, too. Here we have to make a decision on a by-case-basis. To get an educated guess please contact the course guidance.

The German grading system ranges from 1 ("very good") to 6 ("insufficient"). Lower numbers mean better grades. To be eligible for our programme, the grades from your previous studies must be between 1 and 2.5. Grade conversion into the German system is done by uni-assist (cf. application procedure), so we cannot tell you if your GPA fis sufficient. For a first, non-binding estimation on your eligibility you might want to check the calculator provided by the University of Paderborn.

English Language Proficiency -

The medium of instruction for all required courses is English, some additional electives can be taken in German. Thus, we require a certain level of English proficiency such that studies can be undertaken successfully. Thus, a standardised language certificate is required – proof that your previous studies were held in English are not sufficient and not negiotiable. We accept three types of language proficiency certificates:

a TOEFL result of at least 79 (internet based), 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based)

IELTS test with 6.5 points mininum

Cambridge certificate at level B2 or higher (find an exam center)

Proficiency of German language is not a requirement for application. However, additional elective courses are available in German, and we recommend to learn some basic German for daily life. Some hints on learning German can be found at Deutsche Welle.

Motivational Letter -

Applicants need to supply a motivational letter. Please do not send lenghty standard letters describing your general interest in computer science and your appreciation of the German education system. Instead, refer only to our specific programme and follow these guidelines:

Length should be between 150 and 300 words.

The letter must be written in English.

Specify what you learnt and found particularly interesting in your previous studies or practical experiences. Tell us how you want to deepen these previous experience in our master's programme. You can also describe what you expect to learn here for your future job. Key skills and competences are acquired through a project-based teaching approach: on a semester basis, students work in teams to solve assigned research tasks in the labs of the faculty. The M.Sc. programme in Computer Science equips students with the theoretical and practical background necessary to enable them to participate in the design of complex networked and distributed computing systems, as well as to undertake research in this area.

The programme is assessed based on a combination of assigned coursework, written examination, and a dissertation.

The programme is composed of a number of modules that are taken by all students.

These modules include:

- Networked applications: covers applications of the Internet and Intranets ranging from email and the Web to electronic commerce; collaboration and community services; distributed artificial intelligence; and information retrieval.
- Data communications and networks: introduces the fundamentals of computer networks and networking technology.
- Distributed systems: covers the most important paradigms for building distributed applications including client-server computing, distributed object technology, and component models.
- Software engineering for concurrent and distributed systems: covers objectoriented analysis and design techniques and their application to concurrent and distributed systems.
- Security and management of networks and distributed systems: introduces the fundamentals of computer and network security and investigates different approaches to network management and the management of advanced information services.

This course is open to graduates who have achieved the equivalent of at least an upper second-class honors degree, or better, in computing, information technology, or a related discipline. Well qualified candidates from disciplines such as engineering, mathematics, statistics, or physics who have sufficient knowledge of computing (including the ability to program) may also be accepted.
This course has been co-funded under the National Development Plan (Graduate Skills Conversion Programme) for EU fee paying students.

The International Master’s Degree Programme in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a two-year research-oriented programme concentrating on intelligent digital solutions to real world problems. During the past decades, Computer Science and Engineering has had a significant impact into our daily lives. The development continues and soon computers will not be used as separate devices anymore. Instead they will blend into our living environments and offer us rich sets of services through natural and intuitive user interfaces. The graduates from Computer Science and Engineering will play a key role in this development.

The two-year programme has three specialisation options:

• Applied Computing

• Artificial Intelligence

• Computer Engineering

Applied Computing focuses on the next generation of interactive systems that place humans at the focus of the technological development. Adopting a multidisciplinary real-world approach, students have to spend a substantial amount of time working in group projects to develop a variety of systems ranging from interactive online services to games and mobile applications, with a strong focus on innovation and design.

Artificial Intelligence focuses in various fields of AI, such as machine learning, machine vision, and data mining. This specialisation provides students with a solid theoretical understanding and practical skills on processing and analyzing digital data and the ability to create intelligent solutions to real world problems with modern AI techniques.

Computer Engineering focuses on both hardware and software aspects of computing with emphasis on embedded system development. In this specialisation, students also study signal processing and its applications, and work with projects on modern signal processors and embedded computers. The specialisation gives the students a good basis to work with Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

In addition to the core specialization options, students can take optional courses to widen their specialization expertise into:

• Ubiquitous computing

This Master’s programme is provided by the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and students are strongly encouraged to work closely with research groups in the faculty that are international leaders in their fields. The Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) is renowned world-wide for its 35 years of expertise in computer vision research. The Center for Ubiquitous Computing (UBICOMP) has created a unique research environment for Ubiquitous Computing including multitouch wall-sized displays, smartphone sensing middleware and sensor networks. Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group (BISG) is a fusion of expertise from the fields of computer science and biology. During the studies the research groups provide students trainee and master’s thesis positions, with the possibility to continue as a doctoral student, and even as a post-doctoral researcher.

The programme will provide the graduates with sufficient skills to work in a wide variety of positions offered by research institutes and companies mainly operating in the field of information and communications technology (ICT). The graduates are most likely to be employed in research and development related positions, but also management positions and entrepreneurship fit into the profile.

The course, which has been developed in co-operation with leading indigenous and international game industry companies, immerses students in a state of the art learning environment using the very latest tools and technologies, as used by professional game development companies.

The Digital Engineering Master's programme places a high premium on introducing you to current research issues that are jointly defined and supervised by industry partners at an early state. Be a part of generation 4.0! 

The consecutive Digital Engineering Master's programme combines academically specialised expertise from the Civil Engineering and Computer Science and Media disciplines. The coursework is centred on a practical transfer of methodical interrelations between engineering and computer science for complete digitalisation of design, manufacturing, and application processes. In this international Master's programme you will use a range of modelling concepts as a basis for experimentation with complex processes in computer-aided modelling, simulation and visualisation of engineering problems. In addition, you will deepen your knowledge of information-theory methods of data generation and data handling. The aim is the representation, interpretation, evaluation, and optimisation of interdisciplinary processes in construction, mechanical engineering and other industrial fields. 

This prepares graduates of the English-language Digital Engineering Master's programme in a targeted way for work in the field of virtual product and process modelling and optimisation. They are active in a diverse range of fields such as technical administration, model management, engineering analysis and consulting, technical data analysis, as well as software and product development for digital networking in industry. 

Course of Study

The Master's programme in Digital Engineering comprises 120 ECTS and is completed after four semesters of study. In the first two semesters, all students receive foundational courses in order to prepare them to participate in more advanced courses. You will be offered both compulsory and elective courses covering the two core areas of computer science and engineering. Depending on your previous knowledge, we will develop your individual module plan with an emphasis on either engineering or computer science.

From the third semester onward, you will deepen your technical knowledge in the three areas of modelling, simulation and validation, and visualization and data science. In each of these areas, you will have the opportunity to choose elective courses that allow you to create your own specialisation. The curriculum is complemented by a research project with partners from the professional community, as well as elective modules in the Media and Civil Engineering faculties or the Language Centre of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. During the fourth semester, you will write and defend your Master's thesis. In the process, you will receive support from professors and external industry partners, who will support you in the context of consultations.

The School of Clinical Medicine offers a programme in Medical Imaging with an option in Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Safety or Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography.

The Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Safety strands are offered in parallel on a bi-annual basis, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging and CT strand are offered on alternate years. In September 2013, the MRI and CT strands will commence.

The main aim of the programme is to train and qualify Radiographers in the practice of Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Safety, Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Computed Tomography.

The course is intended for qualified Radiographers with a clinical placement in a Nuclear Medicine Department, a Radiology Department, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Department or a Computed Tomography Department. It is a course requirement that the student must spend a minimum of 15 hours per week on clinical placement in a Nuclear Medicine Department, a Radiology Department, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Department or a Computed Tomography Department as appropriate to fulfill the requirements of the course.

The M.Sc. in Medical Imaging will be run over 12 months on a part-time basis.

In the M.Sc. in Medical Imaging, there are 4 separate strands: Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Safety, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography. Students will choose one of the 4 options.

The taught component of the course is covered in the first 8 months. The student may opt to exit the programme upon completion of the taught component with a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Imaging.

From May to September, students undertake an independent research project. Successful completion of the research component of the programme leads to the award of M.Sc. in Medical Imaging.

The M.Sc. in Applied Social Research is a taught Masters programme which can be completed on a one year, full-time or two year, part-time basis. It is designed for graduates in the social sciences who want to develop their research skills and gain employment in the area of research. This Masters is equally suited to those who wish to build research skills for application in their current work environments. The course also provides a strong foundation for further post-graduate study, particularly for PhD research.

Using a combination of lectures, workshops and practical assignments, this M.Sc. programme trains graduates to:

Design and conduct primary social research using both quantitative and qualitative research methods;
Analyse the research data collected using a variety of computer programmes and;
Write and present research findings to a variety of audiences.
Initiated in 1997, the M.Sc. in Applied Social Research has established an excellent reputation in training students in applied research skills. Graduates of the M.Sc. in Applied Social Research typically gain employment in research institutes or consultancies, government departments, semi-state agencies, the NGO sector, and in a range of policy environments. Others go on to complete further post-graduate study.

The M.Sc. programme consists of three integrated modules: Qualitative Research Methods, Quantitative Research Methods, and Research Design, Accessing Resources and Research Ethics. Students also complete an eight-week work placement where they get the opportunity to work alongside experienced researchers/research teams within their host institutions. Students already in relevant employment can complete their work placement in that setting. Exemptions from the work placement may be granted at the discretion of the Course Director in exceptional cases.

A 20,000 word research dissertation is submitted by all students at the end of August (of Year 1 for full-time students and Year 2 for part-time students). This applied research project is initiated following the completion of all course assignments.
