MA Computational Linguistics is a course run by a leading research group at the University of Wolverhampton. As the name suggests, Computational Linguistics (sometimes called Natural Language Processing) is the use of computers to study language. On the course, you will be able to study:

• Translation tools such as translation memory systems;

What happens on the course?

MA Computational Linguistics, when studied full-time, comprises of three semesters worth 60 credits each. Three modules will be studied in both Semester One and Semester Two. During the third semester, students will undertake their research project and complete a 15,000 word dissertation on any aspect of Computational Linguistics.

The course covers all aspects of Computational Linguistics in-line with current and leading work in research and industry, and is divided into the following taught modules:

1. Computer programming in Python

The students will be taught the Python computer programming language, which is specially designed for dealing with natural language texts.

2. Corpus Linguistics in R

Corpus Linguistics involves storing large amounts of text on the computer for linguistic analysis. R is a programming language used to study the statistics of language.

3. Machine translation and other natural language processing applications

The automatic translation of text using statistics. The members of the Research Group will each speak on their own research areas throughout the module.

4. Computational Linguistics

The use of computers to study language at all levels, such as relations between words, part of speech tagging, syntactic parsing and anaphora resolution.

5. Translation tools for professional translators

Using computer tools to speed up many aspects of translation, such as product manuals, film scripts, medical texts, video games and simultaneous interpreting.

6. Machine learning for language processing

Computer techniques for automatically classifying natural language texts, for NLP tasks such as making summaries of text automatically.

7. Research methods and professional skills

You will learn how to design an experiment to thoroughly test your research questions.

Translation Tools for Professional Translators is an elective module that may be chosen in the Second Semester to replace another taught module for those students who are interested in pursuing careers in Translation.

You will be expected to dedicate 9 hours per week to lectures and a proportionate amount of time to self-study and tutorials with your supervisor.

Graduates of this course will be well-placed to continue their academic/research careers by applying for PhD positions within RIILP or at other leading centres for language and information processing. This degree will also enable graduates to access research and development positions within the language processing and human language technology industries, as well as in related areas such as translation, software development and information and communication technologies, depending on their specific module choices and dissertation topic. Description

Our Computer Systems Engineering with Management MSc is a flexible study pathway that prepares science and engineering graduates who have excellent computer programming skills for managerial careers in computer systems engineering, robotics or and the IT sector. The programme will also equip you with essential research, analytical and critical thinking skills.

You will complete the course in one year, studying September to September and taking a combination of required and optional modules totalling 180 credits, including 60 credits that will come from an individual project of around 15,000 words. Alongside the technical elements of the course you will study principles of managementoperations and project management, which will give you an understanding of how computer systems engineering works in practical and commercial environments. The Department of Computer Science is well equipped for teaching, and is continually upgrading its laboratories to ensure equipment is up-to-date – equipment is never more than three years old, and rarely more than two. Currently, our Computer Science students use three fully networked laboratories: one, running Windows; another running Linux; and a project laboratory, containing specialised equipment. These laboratories support a wide range of software, including the programming languages Java, C# and the .net framework, C, C++, Haskell and Prolog among many; integrated programme development environments such as Visual Studio and Netbeans; the widely-used Microsoft Office package; web access tools; and many special purpose software tools including graphical rendering and image manipulation tools; expert system production tools; concurrent system modelling tools; World Wide Web authoring tools; and databases.

As part of the expansion of the Department of Computer Science, we are building the Computational Foundry on our Bay Campus for computer science and mathematical science.

Student Profile

Francesca Madeddu, originally from Italy, completed an outstanding Master’s thesis (which earned her a distinction) investigating interaction with augmented reality on mobile devices. More specifically, she investigated how to interact with virtual Egyptian artefacts placed in real scenes. The final game was deployed at Swansea's Egypt Centre last year and was evaluated by volunteers working at the museum. A Master’s thesis does not often lead to a publication. However, part of Francesca's research was written up as an extended abstract and presented at Computer Graphics and Visual Computing (CGVC), a Eurographics UK conference for visual computing last year. An exceptional achievement!

Students study over three taught semesters and in addition to all the modules from their chosen Computer Science degree, they study modules in English for Academic Purposes and English for Computer Science 1 and 2.

Teaching format

The taught portion of the MSc programme includes eleven modules: three related to English Language and eight specific to Computer Science. Class sizes typically range from 10 to 50 students.

All students are assigned an adviser who meets with them at the start of the year to discuss module choices and who is available to assist with any academic difficulties during the year. A designated member of staff provides close supervision for the MSc project and dissertation.

The Computer Science MSc provides a balance between computer science theory and practical software engineering skills, including teamwork for industrial or research clients. Graduates find employment in the IT industry, or complement their first degree subject with computer science knowledge, leading to interdisciplinary industrial positions and PhD research.

About this degree

You will learn fundamental aspects of how computers work by taking modules in computer architecture, operating systems, compilers, data structures and algorithms. You will also gain practical knowledge in areas such as human-computer interaction, App design, databases and software engineering. You will develop programming skills in modern languages, such as object-oriented Java for Android development. 

Team working, project planning and communication skills are developed by working in small groups developing software for real industrial and research clients. Optional modules allow specialisation in subjects such as functional programming, computer music, entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and a research project (60 credits).

All students undertake an independent computer-based science project which culminates in a dissertation in the form of a project report.

Teaching and learning

Course outline

The Computer and Systems Engineering Master's programme focuses on the education of designing and using modern complex computer systems. Nowadays computer systems are used more or less everywhere, they are extremely diverse and most of them are "invisible" to users. Such systems include not only traditional PC-s and sophisticated supercomputers, but also computer systems "embedded" into cars and mobile phones, for instance. Most of these computers are interconnected via various wired and wireless networks and do not work in isolation. These embedded systems can be either stand-alone items or an integral part of a larger system and represent the combination of software and hardware designed to perform specific functions.

When studying the Computer and Engineering Systems programme, students are exposed to systems design and modelling, computer architectures and programming, to name few of the topics. Exposure to those topics will position students well for jobs at small, medium and large companies. Their jobs will involve defining, designing and using embedded computer system in areas such as automotive electronics, consumer devices, telecommunications, etc.

The Computer and Systems Engineering programme is supervised by two departments of TUT - Department of Computer Engineering (DCE) and Department of Computer Control (DCC). Students can choose between two of the following specialisations:

  • Computer Systems Design (supervised by DCE) focuses on the modelling, analysing, designing and testing of complex systems consisting of both hardware and software components;
  • Automation and Systems Engineering (supervised by DCC) focuses on the modelling, analysing and designing of automation and computer control systems.

Faculty

Faculty of Information Technology (founded in 1965) trains specialists in the main fields of information and communications technology (ICT) at bachelor, master and doctoral level. High-quality knowledge based teaching and training is based on international research and development activities, and tight cooperation with ICT industry.

There are more than 2100 students annually learning in the faculty, which employs 150 faculty members, lecturers, researchers and engineers.
