Applied linguistics addresses real-life language problems through insights gained from current linguistic theory, psychology and education.

Our MA is designed for people who want to know more about how foreign or second languages (particularly English) are learned, and how different kinds of classroom practice might affect proficiency. You explore different approaches to understanding language and language acquisition, and the methods that can be used to investigate language learning and teaching. You select a mixture of modules on language learning and its application to classroom practices.

You can choose areas of special study from a wide range of options, including:

Our MA Linguistic Studies is our broadest postgraduate degree, offering you the widest choice of options. You expand your knowledge of language through studying everything from syntax, to computer-assisted language-learning, to language and gender, to language disorders, to multilingualism.

You build a programme best-suited to your individual needs. This course is ideal if you need to study on a part-time basis and wish to fit your course choices in with your existing commitments, as you can also study on an accumulation basis over a period of up to five years.

Psycholinguistics, the scientific study of the psychology of language, is one of the most important areas of cognitive psychology. How we produce, understand, acquire, and use language, and how these processes are affected by ageing and brain damage, are core topics in understanding human behaviour.

Why study Psychology of Language at Dundee?

In addition to its theoretical interest, psycholinguistics has several important applications, including how a second language should best be taught, how children should be taught to learn to read and write, artificial intelligence, computer-assisted communication, and the treatment of developmental and acquired language disorders. Such applications ensure that there is a wealth of professional career paths available to postgraduates in the area in addition to an academic career.

This course is affiliated with our world-leading Language Research Centre (LaRC).

The School of Psychology also has much specialised equipment, dedicated laboratories and world class research facilities. These include EEG labs, many eye tracking systems, 2D and 3D movement tracking systems, and offsite fMRI access via the Clinical Research Centre at Ninewells Teaching Hospital.

Every full-time MSc student in the department is entitled to use computer facilities available in the Psychology department and throughout the University. We provide access to all the basic software tools that you are likely to need for your MSc.

Aims of the Programme

This course will enable you to:

Pursue and develop the advanced study of research methods in Psychology and in particular to address contemporary issues of epistemology, data collection, measurement and data analysis.
Approach problems in research by critical evaluation of existing psychological paradigms and research literature and to apply this to current theoretical or applied issues in Psychology.
Develop advanced research skills which will be relevant to policy and practice in the workplace.
Develop and demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in research design, methodology and statistical analysis

Who should study this course?

The course offers students an excellent theoretical and practical grounding in research methods in Psychology, building upon the levels of skill and knowledge attained in their first degree in Psychology (as recognised by the British Psychological Society for Graduate Membership).

The course will provide a first year of research training for students intending to continue with postgraduate research or further professional training within Psychology (e.g. health, occupational or educational psychology) or related disciplines (e.g. sociology, social anthropology, or education).

Postgraduate culture

We have a close postgraduate community with a diverse combination of nationalities. The School runs a Postgraduate seminar and a departmental seminar twice weekly throughout teaching semesters, with invited speakers to the seminars. These seminars are a great way to broaden your awareness of contemporary issues within the field of Psychology, to present your own work, and to network with other postgraduate students.

This course is aimed at

Psychology graduates wishing to enhance their knowledge of the psychology of language and communication
Graduates considering a professional training in a language-related discipline (e.g. speech pathology)
Psychology graduates intending to progress to a PhD.

How you will be taught

Learning methods will include oral and written presentations, peer assessments of oral presentations, problem-solving assignments and feedback, and interactive computer assignments. Some of the exercises will be group-based and will be followed by presentation of the results of the analysis. Learners will be expected to be able to respond adequately to questions relating to the interpretation of the analyses.

One-on-one supervision of a research dissertation by a single tutor is designed to promote continuity in the learning experiences provided.

How you will be assessed

The course is assessed by coursework only.

Each module is worth 20 credits apart from the Research Dissertation Module which is worth 60 credits. The total number of credits awarded is 180 for an MSc course.

Careers

Students from this course have gone on to do PhDs. The higher degree also generally improves job prospects when competing against other Psychology graduates in other fields such as education, artificial intelligence, computer-assisted communication, and the treatment of developmental and acquired language disorders.

Overseas Academic Scholarships

The School of Psychology offers three Overseas Academic Scholarships of £3,000 each to overseas (international) taught postgraduate students. These awards are competitive based on academic merit and a personal statement which details and supports the applicant's interest in their chosen taught postgraduate programme. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is 30th June 2014.

The MA Learning, Technology and Education is an internationally recognised qualification and designed for those who have an interest in the design and implementation of technology-supported learning and the societal, social and psychological underpinnings of learning with new technology and have an interest in educational practice as mediated by new information and communication technologies (ICTs).

The design and implementation of technology-supported learning will be addressed at a variety of levels: societal and social levels of organisation (e.g., governments, institutions, and learning communities). However, the course will give special attention to the more psychological level concerned with your experience of learning or teaching. If you wish to develop design skills in relation to ICT, you are able to take elective modules in Computer Science.

The course will provide a degree of direct practical experience in using new educational technology. It does not aim to give extensive hands-on guidance in how to use such resources, the focus is more on the societal, social and psychological underpinnings of learning with new technology. Although this will certainly involve encounters with state-of-the-art applications and practices, the present curriculum should provide you with a very sound basis for informed and reflective practice in all areas of ICT and education.

An innovative feature of the course is its development under the auspices of the University’s Learning Sciences Research Institute (LSRI), which is a collaboration between the Schools of Psychology, Education and Computer Science.

Course Content

The Learning, Technology and Education course is composed four 30-credit modules and a dissertation. There are three core modules and an elective option:-

Assessment
Each 30-credit module is assessed by a written assignment of 6,000 words, or equivalent portfolio of assessment tasks.

The dissertation module entails a substantial piece of self-directed research work of 12,000-15,000 words (or equivalent) that is agreed with and supervised by a member of the course team. It may be empirical in nature or library-based.

The MA TESOL with Applied Linguistics (E-Learning) will provide you with an internationally recognised master’s degree that will enable you to progress to the next level in your career in language education.

While you will study the same modules as you would on the full-time campus-based version of the course, you will be able to pursue the online route as a part-time student. The online format provides you with the flexibility to blend your career and postgraduate studies in a complimentary way. While this is a rigorous course which we expect you to complete within 2-5 years, it has been designed with the part-time adult learner in mind and incorporates a paced delivery method in which you will progress through each module as a group over a 12-week period.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Using a state-of-the-art virtual learning environment incorporating a range of collaborative Web 2.0 tools and a model of social learning, learners are provided with weekly activities that require self-directed study and structured team activities. Each module is based on a core textbook and you will have access to video input from your instructors and engage with reflective discussions and collaborative tasks where appropriate.

You will study the course entirely online using a virtual learning environment. Each module is structured and you will progress through the 12 weeks of input as a group. You are provided with weekly audio/video lectures, engage in structured discussion-based activities, as collaborative activities within your group as appropriate.

We use a variety of assessment procedures including essays, portfolios, presentations, practical projects, online discussions and group activities. Assessment in all cases is designed to promote deep learning and to aid your reflective, analytical and problem-solving skills.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The MA aims to equip you with an in-depth understanding of teaching methodology, lexis, grammar and phonology, and the way in which language is learned. The Specialised Translation MA is open to native and non-native speakers of English, who combine English with any of the following languages: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Polish or Spanish. If you are a native speaker of English, you can elect to study translation with one or two of the above source languages. If you are a non-native speaker of English, you will study translation both from English into your first language and from your first language into English.

The Specialised Translation MA will prepare you for a career in the translation market. Building on your existing language skills, you will learn how to research specialised subjects to produce commercially usable translations of specialised technical and institutional texts, applying insights drawn from the study of linguistics and translation theory as well as from professional practice. You will complete a Translation Project or a Research Thesis. You will also be able to choose from a range of option modules that will, for example, give you an introduction to editing and revision, audiovisual translation, or computer-assisted translation, or enable you to acquire a working knowledge of another language for translation purposes.

You will be able to benefit from our wide range of resources, including an extensive collection of volumes and electronic materials in our library, specialised software applications, and additional resources made available through the University's Virtual Learning Environment. Course content

The course emphasis is on practical training in translation, developing your skills to a high level and learning about the professional environment. If you are a native speaker of English, your core modules will involve translation from either one or two main source languages, chosen from Arabic, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish. If you are a native speaker of Arabic, French, German, Italian, Polish or Spanish, your core modules will cover translation from and into your native language (commonly referred to as your 'first' or 'main' language). All students will translate institutional texts (such as economic, political, legal and EU texts) and technical material, and learn new relevant skills through the option modules. You will also complete a research-based MA Thesis or an MA Translation Project (an extended translation with a preface and annotations).Your studies are further supported by blended learning provision on developing your professionalism, weekly lectures on the theoretical concepts and principles of translation, introductory workshops to a range of translation memory tools, and guest lectures and workshops delivered by external speakers from industry and international institutions.

This programme provides professional development for English language teachers, and focuses on the theory and practice of teaching the English language in a variety of contexts, drawing on innovative research carried out by members of the School of Humanities, which includes work on Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL), corpus linguistics, Academic English and telecollaboration.

A distinctive feature of the programme is that you will have opportunities to observe English Language classes in higher education and undertake microteaching practice. You will also develop digital expertise with state-of-the-art e-learning tools and focus on specific English Language issues relating to your own educational contexts.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Students on the programme state that staff provide them with excellent academic and pastoral support and that their learning experience is very positive (evidence from module and course evaluation questionnaires). The course also focuses on the future world of work and students may apply for part-time paid teaching opportunities and work placements within Coventry University, including placements overseas.

The assessment on the programme is varied and includes essays, reports, presentations, digital learning object design, microteaching and seen in-class tests. HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

The full-time, face-to-face, programme runs over three semesters. There are two entry points: September and January. Students normally take four 15-credit modules in semester 1, four 15-credit modules modules in semester 2, and complete a Dissertation in semester 3.

Modules are taught face-to-face with lectures, workshops, laboratory sessions and seminars. All students are asked to submit a diagnostic task on arrival (normally a short essay). One-to-one support is available for students who need practise in academic English writing.

The delivery of all modules is supported by an online learning environment that is used, for example, to display content material, to submit assignments and provide electronic feedback, to discuss seminar topics (discussion forums), to design student-centred glossaries and to engage in online assessment and practice.

Students are also offered the opportunity to discuss English language teaching and analyse the English language with dedicated e-learning platforms for specific purposes (e.g. Corpus Linguistics tools, Computer Assisted Language Learning and Mobile Assisted Language Learning platforms).

Staff teaching on the programme also make use of the new learning spaces in the Disruptive Media Learning Laboratory in the Lanchester Library, to encourage students to practise English teaching in a variety of settings.

A part-time programme is available for UK/EU applicants, and can be tailored to the needs of each applicant.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

A variety of assessed tasks have been integrated into this programme, offering you a stimulating assessment experience and to enable you to reflect on your work, as the programme is designed to train teachers who will assess work themselves. Each module will normally have two assessment tasks and you will receive feedback on the first task before you submit the second one. The assessment tasks include seen examinations, presentations, essays and reports, corpus-based syllabus and course design, microteaching, reflective test design, e-learning object design in group and peer observation reports.

The external examiners have commented very positively on the variety, innovation and appropriateness of the assessment tasks on this programme. For example in 2013-2014 the External Examiner commented in his annual report: 'The assessment tasks are of good quality - well conceived, often imaginative, and in many cases appropriately practical, matching well with intended learning outcomes. I commend this.'

HOW WILL THIS COURSE ENHANCE MY CAREER PROSPECTS?

English looks likely to continue as the international language for the foreseeable future, and this MA programme leads to a variety of career destinations in teaching the language and/or in education management. Qualifications of this kind are often seen as important for access to senior management posts in both private and state educational institutions around the world. In addition to classroom teaching you will be well equipped to perform roles such as materials developer, resource manager and examiner.

Graduates from the MA in ELT are currently employed as professors in Jordan and China, as Pre-sessional Programme Coordinators in the UK and China and as Academic English Consultants for both the private and public sector, just to provide a few examples.

The Translation and Interpreting MA is open to native and non-native speakers of English, who combine English with any of the following languages: Chinese, French, Italian, Polish or Spanish. The course will provide you with professional training aimed at the translation and interpreting markets, building on your existing language skills to develop a career in those sectors.

The course involves translation as well as conference and public service interpreting between one main language (Chinese, French, Italian, Polish or Spanish) and English. You will learn how to research specialised subjects for professional translation and interpreting purposes and hone your translation and interpreting skills by extensive practice, applying insights drawn from the study of linguistics and translation and interpreting theory as well as from professional practice. You will complete a Translation or Interpreting Project or a Research Thesis. You will also be able to choose from a range of option modules that will, for example, give you an introduction to audiovisual translation, intercultural communication, or sociolinguistics, or enable you to acquire a working knowledge of another language for translation purposes.

Course content

The course emphasis is on practical training in translation and interpreting, developing your skills to a high level and learning about the professional environments. If you are a native speaker of English, your translation modules will involve both institutional and technical translation from French, Italian, Polish or Spanish into English. If you are native speaker of Chinese, French, Italian, Polish or Spanish, your translation modules will cover institutional translation from and into your native language (commonly referred to as your 'first' or 'main' language). You will also study conference and public service interpreting, and learn new relevant skills through the option modules. You will also complete a research-based MA Thesis or an MA Translation or Interpreting Project. Language-specific translation modules cover specialised translation in domains such as business, finance, science, technology and law. The interpreting modules offer intensive language-specific practice in consecutive interpreting (traditional and short) and dialogue interpreting for business and public service contexts.

The practice-based components of the programme, which include valuable simulations of real-life scenarios, are complemented by modules highlighting different aspects of the profession.

You will practise with the latest computer-assisted translation software and use cutting-edge videoconferencing systems for remote interpreting.

Programme structure

All programmes operate on a 15 credit modular structure over two semesters. All taught modules are semester based and are worth 15 credits, which is indicative of 150 hours of learning, comprised of student contact, private study and assessment. 

The MA Translation and Interpreting is studied over one year (full-time mode) or two years (part-time mode). On successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting and can then enter the professional translation and interpreting market.

Language-specific options are paired with English and are subject to demand. If you are a native speaker of English, you can take up to two Specialist Translation or Consecutive and Dialogue Interpreting options (in another language).

If you are not a native speaker of English, you will normally take one Translation option and one Interpreting option (in your mother tongue paired with English).

You can also choose one ab initio language if you wish to expand your portfolio of translation languages.

You can join these bodies as a student member during the course and then become a full member after graduation.

The Department of Computer Science at Aberystwyth has a strong research focus on techniques and applications of intelligent systems, working with many major companies. Our taught Masters degrees draw on this focus, and link to the expertise and interests of the Department. They are designed to meet the needs of both students wanting a foundation for a career in research, and those wanting to expand on their skills to accelerate their industrial career.

Contemporary software is frequently developed to function in distributed systems. Applications are deployed across multiple computers, interacting to provide services and to solve problems in a distributed way. This Masters course is suitable for students intending to pursue a career in the software industry, and is a qualifying Masters Degree for Chartered Engineer status. It can also lead to a career in research.

The course in Software Engineering is a two year full-time programme. This degree is the same as the one year MSc in Computer Science (Software Engineering) - G493, with the addition that the student spends a year working in industry after the taught part of the course.

Year one of the course is divided into two parts over three semesters. In part one, you will establish a breadth of necessary skills in a number of core modules whilst directing your own study by choosing specialist modules, worth a total of 120 credits. Approximately 12 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.

Assessment

The taught part of the course is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises, case studies, course work and formal examinations. The subsequent successful submission of your research dissertation leads to the award of an MSc.

Industrial Year

This degree is the same as the one year MSc in Computer Science (Software Engineering), with the addition that the student spends a year working in industry after the taught part of the course.

• Students study at Aberystwyth University from September to May, and are supported in applying for suitable jobs in the software
industry.
• They work in the UK from June to the following May.
• They return to Aberystwyth to complete their dissertation from June to September

The work in industry is paid employment, not just work experience. Typical annual salaries for an industrial year are between £11,000 and £15,000.

Students wishing to do the industrial year are assisted in finding a place in industry. There is assistance with preparing an appropriate CV, training in what to expect at an interview, and practice in being interviewed by experienced industry interviewers. The Department of Computer Science sends about 70 students each year for a year's experience in industry, and has many contacts in companies enthusiastic to take good students from Aberystwyth University.

As these are paid jobs for companies, we cannot guarantee any student a job - the companies select the employees they want. Students that are unable to find a job can complete the Masters degree without an industrial year.

There is an additional but much reduced fee for the year in industry (presently £800 for the year), and members of staff stay in touch electronically and by visiting students during the year.

Course content

Throughout the year you’ll be introduced to the key methods and approaches in translation studies in a core module. If English is not your first language, you’ll also take another core module to help you improve your skills in working in the language.

In your first semester you’ll also begin to develop interpreting skills and work on specialized translation in your chosen language. You may continue with translation in the following semester, while you’ll build on your interpreting skills by practicing simultaneous and consecutive and bilateral interpreting.

In either semester, you can choose optional modules on topics like public speaking and genre analysis in translation. You’ll also complete a summer project by the end of the course in September, which could be either a dissertation or two extended pieces of translation work.

All translation modules are offered INTO English, though for some languages we also offer a FROM English module. Because this is the bidirectional version of the course, you’ll train to interpret both ways between one foreign language and English.

The major aim of this course is to help you acquire competence in the basic skills of teaching and classroom management within the primary school.

In order to ensure close link between theory and practice, the course includes both university and school-based work throughout the year. In total, you will spend nineteen weeks in school and nineteen in University.

If you've graduated from a non-computing subject and are looking to enhance your computer skills this could be the right course for you. This MSc in Applied Computing course allows students to move forward from their previous studies and expand their knowledge into the world of computing.

With a strong focus on software development, this course is far more than just an introduction to the basics of computing. It will drive you deeper into the understanding of engineering computer programs and databases.

The course is based on practical, real-world assignments to provide great experience for your future career. As it is modelled on good practice within the industry, the MSc in Applied Computing ensures that students are kept up-to-date and instilled with a high level of employability.

You will have the opportunity to develop your projects by injecting your own personality into them, reflecting your own personal preferences within your practical work. The course also encourages a high degree of autonomy, functioning in a manner best described as 'assisted self-learning.'

Our facilities

You will have 24-hour access to our award winning and purpose-built Queen Mother Building. It has an unusual mixture of lab space and breakout areas, with a range of conventional and special equipment for you to use. It's also easy to work on your own laptop as there is wireless access throughout the building. Our close ties to industry allows us access to facilities such as Windows Azure and Teradata, and university and industry standard software such as Tableau for you to evaluate and use.

The University maintains a friendly, intimate and supportive atmosphere, and we take pride in the fact that we know all of our students. We have a thriving postgraduate department with regular seminars and guest speakers.

Who should study this course?

The MSc in Applied Computing is for students that have graduated from subjects other than computing, but have a keen interest in developing their computing knowledge and skills.

Teaching & Assessment

- How you will be taught

We know how important it is to be at the leading edge of computing and so you will learn from our University's research-active computing staff. Leading researchers teach you and small class sizes mean that they really get to know you, making for an informal and supportive community.

Industrial collaboration is part of our ethos too, so we regularly include guest experts from industry.

- How you will be assessed

The taught modules are assessed by continuous assessment plus end of semester examinations in December and March/April. The project is assessed by dissertation.

Coursework is often very practical, e.g. writing computer programs, designing interfaces, writing reports, constructing web sites, testing software, implementing databases, analysing problems or presenting solutions to clients.

Over two semesters (between September and April) students will undertake 6 taught modules covering:

Internet and Computer Systems
Software Engineering
Software Development and Advanced Programming using C++
Graphical User Interfaces
Human-Computer Interaction
Database Systems

Please note that some of the modules in the programme are shared with other masters programmes and some of the teaching and resources may be shared with our BSc programme. These joint classes offer a valuable opportunity to learn from, and discuss the material with, other groups of students with different backgrounds and perspectives.

This award enables the development of higher levels of knowledge and skills in Advanced Clinical Practice at the depth and breadth appropriate to Master’s level work. By using a blended learning approach, the award creates a practice-focused, student-centred, flexible programme that develops student capabilities to:
-Challenge Advanced Clinical Practice
-Engage in independent evidence-based decision making
-Determine creative and innovative solutions to practice issues
-Develop analytical and intellectual skills at Masters level

This part time three year programme comprises of both practice and academic based learning. The clinical focus of the award is a direct result of the continuing need to develop the role of Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

The expanding clinical role is assisted by linking the student with a clinical preceptor who is an expert in the student's clinical speciality. The student will also receive support for personal and professional development from a senior clinical lead of the same profession who acts as a mentor for the duration of the award.

Course outline

This award is designed to offer you a flexible programme of learning. The programme includes 150 credits of Award core modules and 30 credits of Award option modules. The option modules provide opportunity for your development in professional studies and/or clinical care in areas that meet the learning outcomes and clinical competencies of the Award, and you will normally study modules in the following sequence when exploring these themes:

The award has three potential exit points: The award is flexible in that it allows you study modules in the PgC and PgD in any order, however you cannot be awarded a PgC or PgD until the modules for each stage have been completed.
-The postgraduate certificate (PgC) in Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making can be awarded following successful completion of PgC modules to the value of 60 level 7 credits.
-The postgraduate diploma (PgD) in Advancing Clinical Practice can be awarded following successful completion of PgC and PgD modules to the value of 120 level 7 credits or 30 level 6 credits (Independent Supplementary Prescribing ONLY) and 90 level 7 credits.
-Once you have successfully completed the Postgraduate diploma, you are eligible to register for the Masters project or dissertation. The award of Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Clinical Practice will be awarded following successful completion of modules to the value of 30 level 6 credits and 150 level 7 credits or 180 level 7 credits.

In order to progress from one stage of an award to another (i.e. PgC to PgD, PgD to Masters), you must complete the proceeding stage although you are free to study modules can be undertaken in any order.

Employment opportunities

This award will equip you with the skills and knowledge to look for a position as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in NHS or Independent Heath Provision. However the course does not provide automatic qualification for employment in these roles as some practitioner roles may require specialist experience and knowledge outside the remit of the course content. However, it should provide a stepping stone to these positions as they occur.

Other admission requirements

Entry onto the Award must comply with the University requirements for admission to Postgraduate awards. Applicants must meet the following criteria: Applicants should normally hold an honours degree of a UK University, or any other qualification deemed to be equivalent to a UK honours degree.
OR
For those whose first language is not English you need to demonstrate a minimum of:
-A minimum score of 7.0 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System) as administered by the British Council in most countries.
-A minimum score of 550 in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or 213 in the computer-based test. [TOEFL results must include a minimum score of 4.5 for the TWE (Test of Written English) or Cambridge Proficiency Grade C.

Entry onto the Award Pathway must comply with the University requirements for admission to Postgraduate Awards. Applicants should normally hold an honours degree (minimum 2:2) from a UK University, or any other qualification deemed to be equivalent to a UK honours degree at this level.
OR
If an applicant does not have an honours degree she/he may still be admitted if he/she has significant appropriate experience and can provide evidence of ability to undertake the course successfully and benefit from it. A professional portfolio indicating achievements is an essential tool for this purpose.
