This new and innovative Masters programme caters for the current global need for toxicologists and ecotoxicologists who are competent in conducting hazard and risk evaluation of chemical substances.


Aims
The programme aims at providing students with an advanced and up-to-date understanding of the effects of chemicals on human and environmental health and the resulting impact on chemical risk assessment and regulation. The programme covers both human and ecotoxicological risk assessment and includes modules on topical areas, such as mixtures toxicology, endocrine disruption and computational toxicology. Some modules have been designed specifically to be offered as short-term training programmes for professionals


The course is suitable for graduates interested in obtaining a qualification in human and environmental health, as well as students already in full time employment who require either formal qualifications or intend to revalidate their qualifications in toxicology. This will contribute to their continuing professional development (CPD) and towards the requirements for the UK Register of Toxicologists.


Course contents
The MSc in Toxicology and Risk Assessment comprises a total of 8 taught modules, including 6 compulsory modules and 2 (out of 3) optional modules.

Compulsory modules:
• Priority Pollutants and Human Health Effects (Autumn term, 12 weeks)
• Essentials in Ecotoxicology (Autumn term, 12 weeks).
• Designing, Analysing and Interpreting Toxicological Studies (Autumn term, 5 consecutive days)
• Current Practice in Chemical Risk Assessment (Spring term, 5 consecutive days)
• Chemical Regulation and Legislation in the EU (Autumn term, 5 consecutive days)
• Carcinogens and Mutagens (Autumn term, 12 weeks).

Optional Modules: (students will have to complete 2 out of 3 optional modules):
• Mixtures Toxicology and Cumulative Risk Assessment (Spring term, 5 consecutive days)
• Reproductive Toxicology and Endocrine Disruption (Spring term, 12 weeks)
• Computational Toxicology: Modelling and Predicting Toxicity (Spring term, 5 consecutive days)

Dissertation
Depending on student’s interests and their progress through the course, they will have the opportunity to carry out their dissertation with collaborators from Industry and regulatory bodies.

Throughout the course, students will be required to develop a personal development plan, agreed upon with tutors, which will structure and enhance their professional and personal development.


Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
A number of our specialised modules are run as intensive short-courses, which can be taken individually by participants without having to enroll for the full course. The aim is to support professionals already in employment in advancing their knowledge in specific areas, as well as developing their careers.

About the course

The research conducted is focused on utilising integrated physiological and pharmacological approaches with biochemical and molecular techniques to study disease states, underlying mechanisms of disease and drug actions, with a view to identifying novel mechanisms, therapeutic targets and agents with a clinical and translational focus.

This MSc in Biomedical Science, a two-year, part-time course introduces students to an interdisciplinary approach to research, which utilises technologies and skills from a wide spectrum of scientific, engineering and clinical disciplines to address fundamental questions originating in biology and medicine. Aimed at individuals employed in the biomedical device, pharmaceutical and diagnostic sectors, this course has been developed to meet the needs of working graduates who wish to update their knowledge and/or change careers.

Programme Delivery

The programme provides you with the means of achieving the mathematical, computational, and instrumentation skills required in this field. The programme covers modules in Cellular Biology, Innovation and Technology Transfer, Anatomy (Histology & Gross), Biomaterials, and a practical module. Additional modules offered include Molecular and Regenerative Medicine, Applied Pharmacology and Toxicology, Monitoring for Health Hazards at Work, Lasers, Stereology and Tissue Engineering and Biomechanics.

Students attend lectures once every 5 weeks, with distance learning supported by Echo360 Lecture Capture and Blackboard technologies. Product Development, Validation and Regulation, as well as Project Management, Experimental Design and Data Analysis, are also covered. Students complete a research project worth a third of the final grade. The research may be done in-house at the student’s place of work or it may be done in collaboration with NUI Galway based researchers.

Students who are unable to complete a research project have the option to leave with a PDip Biomedical Science (Level 9). The PG Cert (Level 8) caters for those not in a position to commit more than one year to postgraduate studies. However, following successful completion of the PG Cert, students may request a transfer into the second year of the MSc programme, assuming numbers permit it. Alternatively, students may choose to leave with a PG Cert, but may request entry into the MSc programme two or four years later, joining a subsequent student cohort.

The Master of Science (MSc) is a two-year degree which encompasses both coursework and research. The first year involves mainly coursework and preliminary research preparation. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to existing fields of research, or to begin to develop new areas.

The MSc can be studied in any of the subjects listed below, and may be taken by a combination of coursework and thesis, or by thesis only. Students who have a Bachelor's degree will complete the MSc by papers and thesis (at least two years of full-time study). Students who have an Honours degree or postgraduate diploma can complete the degree by thesis only (minimum of one year of study).

Structure of the Programme

The degree may be awarded in any of the subjects listed above. With the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences) the degree may be awarded in a subject not listed above.

The programme of study shall be as prescribed for the subject concerned. A candidate whose qualification for entry to the programme is the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours or the Postgraduate Diploma in Science or equivalent may achieve the degree after a minimum of one year of further study, normally by completing a thesis or equivalent as prescribed in the MSc Schedule.
A candidate may be exempted from some of the prescribed papers on the basis of previous study.

A candidate shall, before commencing the investigation to be described in a thesis, secure the approval of the Head of the Department concerned for the topic, the supervisor(s), and the proposed course of the investigation.

A candidate may not present a thesis which has previously been accepted for another degree. A candidate taking the degree by papers and thesis must pass both the papers and the thesis components.

For the thesis, the research should be of a kind that a diligent and competent student should complete within one year of full-time study
