The Podiatry MSc is for practising podiatrists wanting to build on their skills and knowledge, advance their professional practice, and earn a further professional and academic qualification.
The course helps you to develop your clinical and communication skills, and broaden your knowledge of podiatry and complementary specialties while earning a formal qualification.
A wide range of optional modules means you can create your own study programme to suit your professional or personal aspirations, and includes the opportunity to blend podiatry with related disciplines.
We are known for our flexible approaches to practice-based learning, with course durations and intensities that can be adapted to your individual needs and outside commitments.
The course is designed to fit around your existing practice hours. Week-long intensive study blocks allow attendance for students based in the UK, EU and internationally.
The University of Brighton developed and awarded the first degrees in podiatry in the UK and we have been recognised by podiatry's professional bodies for the standard of our teaching. You will have access to our excellent facilities including our own hospital, and Human Movement Laboratory.

Students normally study three one-week modules each year, typically separated by eight to twelve weeks. You can choose all podiatry options or include interdisciplinary options which may require you to attend one day per week rather than the week-long study block structure of podiatry.
To be awarded the Podiatry MSc, you must successfully complete three compulsory modules, plus three options and a dissertation. Alternatively, you can study individual modules, being awarded a PGDip on completion of six modules, or a PGCert on completion of three specified modules.
The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and practice-based learning in our Leaf Hospital.

School of Health Sciences postgraduate education
This course is part of our School of Health Sciences postgraduate education programme. The programme allows you to sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go. It also gives you access to interdisciplinary modules across a broad selection of health and social science subjects.

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.
The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.
You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.
On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.
Human Movement Laboratory
The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.
In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.
Masters-level education is an important component of advanced and specialist practice. It allows you greater autonomy and to accelerate personal and professional development or promotion in your practice.
Feedback from students who have completed this course shows that they have progressed their careers in management and education, to higher levels of study and clinical specialisation.
Completion of the Podiatry MSc will also prepare you for further study at MPhil and PhD level if you wish to continue pursuing an academic path.
The MSc in Cancer Biology is for students who wish to gain an advanced education and training in the biological sciences, within the context of a disease that affects a large proportion of the global population.
The programme provides training in the modern practical, academic and research skills that are used in academia and industry. Through a combination of lectures, small-group seminars and practical classes, students will apply this training towards the development of new therapies.
The programme culminates with a research project that investigates the molecular and cellular basis of cancer biology or the development of new therapies under the supervision of active cancer research scientists.

Each one-hour lecture is supplemented by two hours of small-group seminars and workshops in which individual themes are explored in-depth. There are practical classes and mini-projects in which you design, produce and characterise a therapeutic protein with applications in therapy.

Health psychologists apply their knowledge of psychology and health to understand illness and promote health and wellbeing. They aim to enhance psychological and emotional outcomes for individuals who are ill or who have a disability.
They develop healthcare policy and work to improve the healthcare system.There is an urgent need to produce graduates who have experience of an interdisciplinary approach and who can apply both their academic knowledge to understand and contribute to the development of topics in health psychology as well as their practical skills to enhance practices such as stress and pain management in clinical health contexts. Furthermore, skills acquired by postgraduate psychological researchers are needed to promote evidence-based practice in healthcare.
The health psychology programme at Teesside presents a coherent programme of study which, at the same time, reflects the major debates and produces graduates who can creatively and innovatively contribute to the development of their field. The programme encourages you to develop your own interests within health psychology and to explore how health psychologists can work within these specialist areas. Health psychologists work in a variety of settings including the NHS, universities, private practice, health-related organisations, within communities and schools.
The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society and provides Stage 1 practitioner training, a pre-requisite for Stage II training in Health Psychology and Chartered Psychologist status.
The course comprises six core modules that aim to develop your knowledge of how psychology can be employed to facilitate and protect health, and develop your ability to effect change and suggest alternatives in healthcare provision.
You will explore current issues in health psychology, and gain transferable and practical skills to facilitate progression in the field of health psychology. Supported by a research methods team with expertise in both quantitative and qualitative methods, you will critically evaluate the nature and practice of research in health psychology, study research ethics and integrity and systematic reviewing, and develop skills in advanced research design and analysis.
The programme aims to develop writing and presentation skills that are transferable to practice, including conference presenting and writing for publication. Throughout the programme, you will be encouraged to think critically and reflect upon your skills development. Emphasis is given to the study of clinical and professional skills and you will be equipped with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable effective communication with patients and health professionals. You will explore our range of physiological measures, have an opportunity to practice assessment techniques and will gain knowledge of interventions including mindfulness, guided imagery and cognitive behavioural therapy.
Opportunities are provided for you to gain work experience in healthcare practice as well as to work alongside academic staff to conduct health psychology research and evaluation. The programme has strong links to organisations providing a range of volunteering opportunities as well as external agencies, including the NHS and within the public health sector.

How you learn
You learn by knowledge and skills acquisition through directive teaching, group discussions, independent exploration and examination of academic resources. You will work with project data, review professional practice scenarios, and will have an opportunity to present a poster at our annual Teesside University Psychology Conference.
The course is delivered by a team of experts with wide-ranging research, consulting and practice expertise. There are also contributions from practitioners working in the fields of research, consultancy, and NHS practice.
Staff areas of specialism include: breast cancer, complementary and alternative therapies, neurological conditions, doctor-patient communications, psychosocial interventions and sexual health. The team has close links with the Psychology Research Unit within the Social Futures Institute (SoFI) and with AskFuse, The Centre for Translational Research in Public Health.
How you are assessed
A range of assessment methods is used, from traditional essays and examinations to a critical review, poster presentation, and a video of you conducting a stress management intervention. You will develop a research proposal including a mini systematic review and will reflect on your skills and development. Your final research project is written in the style of a research article.

After Stage 1, you can become a Chartered Psychologist by successfully completing Stage 2 training in Health Psychology. This will confer eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC and use the protected title of ‘Health Psychologist’.
The course team includes experienced supervisors of the British Psychological Society Qualification in Health Psychology (QHP Stage 2). The MSc programme additionally provides you with the skills to pursue a PhD and the course team have the expertise to supervise a broad range of health psychology topics.
Following the MSc, our students frequently progress to a PhD, undertake the QHP Stage 2 and obtain posts within academia, the NHS, and public health services.
The new MRes (Masters of Research) in Healthcare & Design is an interdisciplinary programme that draws on the complementary knowledge and expertise of Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art.
The programme aims to equip candidates from a wide range of academic and professional practice backgrounds with the tools and techniques to instigate and lead design innovations in a broad range of healthcare environments. Teaching takes place in the RCA and St Mary’s Hospital with a course that is particularly well tailored to those who aim to study alongside employment with eight intensive modules delivered in ‘burst mode’ (four per year in two 2-week blocks) and a supervised major personal design research project. The teaching is delivered in a mix of lectures and practical workshops in group and individual projects where designers, healthcare professionals and clinicians work together often in group based activities to enhance knowledge exchange.
Contexts for healthcare innovation are broad ranging from the physical and psychological to surgery, recuperation and recovery, therapy, transport, services and software. We expect outputs from this course to be implementable in the healthcare industry ranging from product and technology innovations through to software solutions, spatial and architectural to new experience and service designs.
The course builds on the longstanding partnerships between the RCA and Imperial College in developing joint courses since the 1980s. The Helen Hamlyn Centre for design has delivered over 150 healthcare and user centred projects while the Helix Centre at St Mary’s Hospital is the first design studio in a clinical setting and brings designers and clinicians together for the first time to solve healthcare challenges using lean innovation strategy. A key objective of the Helix Centre is to catalyse more innovative approaches to healthcare service delivery with better design and planning, more efficient use of resources and greater focus on patient need. The programme runs in parallel with the MSc in Healthcare Innovation at Imperial sharing aspects of course content in a way that is deliberately designed to bridge the gap between design-driven innovation and the healthcare context. This unique body of expertise feeds back into the MRes programme though teaching, supervision and mentoring.
