What you'll study

The MEGov will give you the skills and knowledge to manage transformational government ICT projects, using real-life examples from New Zealand and overseas. Your studies will include:

  1. Up to eight core courses depending on your previous work and study experience—you'll learn about the theories, concepts, frameworks and strategies that underpin the management of public service ICT. You'll also find out how e-Government relates to good government and examine the risks and benefits of using ICT to enable public engagement.
  2. A research project–you'll research and report on a specific topic in e-Government or apply your knowledge to the design and management of a transformational e-Government project.
  3. Four other courses–choose from a wide variety of courses depending on your career goals, looking at issues in public policy, public management and information management in government and the private sector.

How you'll learn

Courses are delivered in a Block, Intensive or Weekly format. Whatever format your course is delivered, you need to attend all of the classes to pass and to get the most out of your study.

Block

Most MEGov courses are delivered on-campus in a block format, which means that you'll need to attend classes on three full days each semester. These classes are separated by about six weeks.

Weekly

Some of your core classes are delivered in a weekly format, with classes taking place in the evening during the standard university trimesters.

Intensive

Depending on the courses you take, you may have a class that's delivered in an intensive format. Intensive courses are structured as one-off blocks of four days, or two blocks of two days separated by six weeks.

Workload

If you are studying full-time you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20–23 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working full-time.

You can estimate your workload by adding up the number of points you'll be doing. One point is roughly equal to 10–12 hours work.

Duration

The MEGov can be completed in two years part-time, or one year of full-time study.

Community

Postgraduate study at Victoria will help you build valuable relationships and networks with peers, university staff and future colleagues.

You’ll get an orientation to introduce you to the people you’ll work with, a working space with desk, computer and storage, and use of a common room or kitchen when you want to take a break or mingle.

Immigration, environmental degradation, population ageing and global poverty are just a few of the political challenges that contemporary policymakers face. In an increasingly globalised world, it is more important than ever that governments respond quickly and effectively to these challenges. National governments, however, increasingly share responsibility for designing and implementing effective policy with several layers of government (local, regional, national, international) and different types of actors (governments, non-profit organisations, businesses).

Designing effective policies in different political systems

The COMPASS specialisation provides the skills needed for a career in government or other policymaking organisations (NGOs, international organisations, advocacy groups). Courses focus on the barriers to and facilitators of reform, Europeanisation and compliance with EU directives, welfare state reform, and the problems governments face in the 21st century.

The degree awarded for completing COMPASS is either a Master's degree in Public Administration or in Political Science. By joining both disciplines, the specialisation incorporates the strengths of both.

Our approach to this field

Political decisions are increasingly made in complex multi-governance systems. Transnational institutions such as the UN, the EU, the World Bank and the IMF have grown in importance. Policy problems are seldom the remit of a single government, but often involve several layers of government (local, regional, national, transnational) and several types of actors (governments, non-profit organisations, businesses). Moreover, recent reforms in many countries have led to the fragmentation of the public sector.

This fragmentation of the public sector comes at a time when governments face a particularly difficult set of problems. Economic and financial crises threaten the sustainability of what we used to take for granted. Social and demographic changes, such as population ageing, have made existing social policies and public programmes controversial. New technologies have radically changed the risks that we face and how we perceive them. These developments have implications for the training and skills of those who wish to work in the public sector and NGO sector.

- Components

The Master’s specialisation in Comparative Politics, Administration and Society is designed to address these issues and impart the skills necessary for a young professional in contemporary public administration. The one-year programme consists of two components:

An advanced general course that refines the analytical skills necessary for an international and comparative orientation.

Courses that specifically address the issue of the interaction between different levels of administration: international, national, and regional. The courses focus on, for instance, the barriers to and facilitators of reform, Europeanisation and compliance with EU directives, how various countries deal with problems concerning the social welfare state, and the challenges governments face in the 21st century. Courses emphasise questions such as: what are the implications when policy risks and issues are spread over different levels of administration? What happens when national administrations lose competencies to international bodies?

- Ethics

All courses in this Master’s specialisation include some training in the ethical dimensions of public administration. We believe that professions in the public and semi-public sector should be able to identify the ethical aspects of politics and public administration, because political processes are never neutral. Courses emphasise questions such as: which criteria need to be met for which players before an agreement can be reached? What hidden agendas could influence a policy? What interests are involved during an official inquiry?

- Change perspective

This Master’s specialisation provides students with a broad foundation concerning the way in which governments deal with contemporary problems. Students will learn that standardised solutions can be counter-productive because each country has its own unique context (such as culture and history) which needs to be taken into account when designing policy solutions.

Admission requirements for international students

1. A completed Bachelor's degree in Political Science or a related discipline from a recognised, academic university.

A substantial part of the courses in your Bachelor’s degree should be in your preferred specialisation: International Relations, Political Theory, Comparative Politics or Public Administration (COMPASS).

2. Competency in Social Science Research Methodology (quantitative and qualitative)

Due to the strong academic nature of this programme, it is essential that students have the necessary basic research skills. Applicants with little or no Social Science Research Methodology in their previous education may get admission, provided they first complete an (oral) examination in research methodology. The oral exam can be held in person in Nijmegen or via Skype.

3. A proficiency in English

In order to take part in this programme, you need to have fluency in both written and spoken English. Non-native speakers* of English without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:

- a. TOEFL (iBT) Certificate: minimum overall score of 90, with subscores not lower than 18, or

- An IELTS score of >6.5 with subscores not lower than 6.0, or

- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) ): minimum score of C, or

- Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): minimum score of C.

Comparative Politics at Radboud University focuses on the following aspects:

- Political conflict in the age of globalisation

Opening up the newspaper or turning on the television it would be hard to miss recent developments such as Catalan and Scottish demands for independence, challenges to authoritarian regimes (i.e. the Arab Spring), the persistence of populist parties (in Europe and elsewhere), debates on immigration, and demands by young people for employment and a better future (e.g. the indignados movement). We are interested in uncovering the social, economic, and political causes of such developments, while also questioning whether events such as these are destabilising or whether they will be accommodated into existing institutional structures.

- Alternative forms of representation

Democracies face unprecedented challenges in areas like migration, environmental degradation, and demographic change. However, democracies must also cope with electorates that are increasingly dissatisfied with government performance and legitimacy. Some citizens withdraw from political participation, some turn to populist and anti-establishment parties, while others become even more politically active. In comparative politics we utilise a variety of theoretical perspectives to analyse these trends, while we also seek to propose possible solutions to these problems.

- Political challenges to political reform

We study the politics of reform across a wide range of social policies, targeting inequalities while seeking to learn from the best comparative work available on the welfare state, gender equality, migration and integration and sexual equality.

The Comparative Art and Archaeology MA at UCL is a wide-ranging and challenging programme designed to provide students with a sophisticated understanding of the major problems, theories and approaches in the sociological and anthropological interpretation of the art of pre-modern societies.

About this degree

Students are encouraged to think critically and work independently, from a broadly comparative perspective, across the boundaries of regional and period specialisation which have traditionally characterised the study of art. They develop subject-specific, research-oriented skills relevant to their development as practising analysts within the history, anthropology or archaeology of art.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (30 credits), optional modules (60 credits) and a research dissertation (90 credits).

The department

As a political science or international studies major, you will examine worldwide political systems, economic systems, and social organizations from a variety of perspectives. The Department of Political Science is very active in placing students in internships, including full-time, paid positions in the New York State Assembly and Senate in Albany in the spring of the students’ junior and senior years. Other internships are available to selected students in law offices, with judges, and at the United Nations.

Students are engaged in many extra-curricular activities, including the Political Science Association, the International Studies Association, the Pre-law Association, the Young Republican Club and Young Democrat Club. Objectives

This new Master of Science is delivered in English and aims at international students who want to acquire interdisciplinary skills to evolve in the field of Comparative Effectiveness Research. The programme is limited to 30 students, a small group size that will allow professors to use highly interactive and innovative teaching methods including work in small groups. The goal of the programme is to acquire strong skills in methods, epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, biostatistics and public health.

Curriculum

The Master of Public Health in Comparative Effectiveness Research is a second-year course that is a part of a two-year Master in Public Health programme (60 ECTS). This Master’s programme comprises 10 modules, which are delivered through a range of interactive learning strategies. The programme includes the latest methods and advances in the field of CER, epidemiology and biostatistics. Courses will include applied, hands-on sessions allowing the use of various epidemiological methods, statistical methods, and analysis of various types of data.

Classes are full-time and take place from October to December. Each week is dedicated to one module that is delivered by two outstanding international lecturers.

Internship

Upon the completion of formalised courses and after the validation exams in January, students will have to complete a five-month internship. The internship can take place in France or abroad, in public health agencies and companies, in research laboratories, etc. and is supervised by a senior researcher.

In addition to the international teaching setting, students will also benefit from the vast professional and academic network maintained by the French and international faculty members. Indeed, the Master of Public Health in comparative effectiveness research is managed at the Centre of Research in Epidemiology and Statistics Sorbonne Paris Cité, and maintains close links with several professional networks, including the Cochrane Collaboration, the EQUATOR Network, the CONSORT Network and INSERM.

Internships will strengthen the connection and pooling of research discoveries between the academic and non-academic partners, encourage the acquisition of the transferable skills needed to succeed in a 21-century research setting and ensure a smooth transition to the professional world.

The awarding of the Master’s degree will depend on successful completion of the formalised courses, the internship and the thesis defence.

The EU is a major influence on public policy across all its member states and in global politics more broadly. It also remains a central issue within UK politics and policy-making following the Brexit decision in June 2016. Students are equipped with the knowledge, transferable skills and research experience necessary to analyse the complex challenges facing Europe's policymakers today. The programme includes a funded study trip to Brussels.

About this degree

The programme provides in-depth knowledge of the EU’s institutions, politics and policies. It covers legislative, executive, and judicial politics; introduces EU law-making and lobbying; and addresses key contemporary questions, such as Europe’s global role, democratic legitimacy, the euro crisis and the EU’s impact on member states. Students choose from a wide range of options in public policy, international politics and comparative government.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a 10,000-word dissertation.

Teaching and learning

Teaching on the EU is interdisciplinary and pools the department's world-class expertise in European politics, public policy and international relations. What you'll study

You'll take a mixture of foundation and core courses that will give you the skills and capability to design, implement and evaluate policy for a range of different outcomes.

Learn about the theory and practice of policy making and examine the role of government and others in policy creation and implementation. Understand the issues at play in different policy areas like local government, health or development. If you're working while you study, you can apply what you learn to your own workplace policy challenges immediately.

MPP students should also take a research paper as part of their qualification. This could be a research topic that is relevant to your workplace. If you want to complete your Master's by coursework only, you need to get approval from the Master's Programme Director.

How you'll learn

Most classes are delivered on-campus in a block format. That means you'll need to attend day-long classes on three different days each semester, each of these separated by about six weeks. You'll also need to complete an additional six hours of structured class work, which may be face-to-face or online.

Some classes are delivered in a weekly or intensive format. Intensive courses are structured as one-off blocks of four days, or two blocks of two days separated by six weeks. Classes for weekly courses usually take place in the evening during the standard university trimesters.

Whatever format your course is delivered in, you'll need to attend all of the classes to pass and to get the most out of your study.

Study while you work

Because of the block format of the classes, you can fit your study commitments around your work and home life. And if you're struggling at any time, just let us know—we want your study to be a success.

Workload

If you are studying full-time you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20–23 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working full-time.

You can estimate your workload by adding up the number of points you'll be doing. One point is roughly equal to 10–12 hours work.

Duration

The MPP can be completed in three years part-time, or in two years of full-time study.

The MPM will give you the skills and capability to understand the theory and practice of public management and boost your performance as a manager.

Your studies will include:

  1. Three foundation courses that examine government and governing in modern societies, government and the economy, and policy and management practice.
  2. Four core courses–you'll study governance and public sector reform, and strategic and financial management. You'll also learn about planning and service delivery, human resources and monitoring and evaluation.
  3. A research project that leads to a report on a specific topic in public management.
  4. Three other courses–choose from a variety of courses according to your interests and career goals—like public sector law, economics, policy analysis or politics and philosophy.

The Diploma programme requires you do seven foundation and core courses and one more course of your choice, and Certificate students do four foundation and core courses.

These courses have 24 hours of structured class time, which are broken up into three separate days of six hours each. There are also six hours of structured class work, which may be delivered face-to-face or online.

Intensive format

These courses have a minimum of 24 hours' class time. They are delivered over four consecutive days, or two blocks of two consecutive days with about six weeks in between. Attendance is required on all course days.

Weekly format

Weekly courses take place during the standard university trimester periods. These courses are held weekly in the evening.

You can check the course schedules in the School of Government Postgraduate Prospectus. Whatever format your course is delivered in, you need to attend all of the classes to pass and to get the most out of your study.

Study while you work

The block format of the classes means you can fit your study commitments around your work and home life. If you're struggling at any time, just let us know—we want your study to be a success.

Workload

If you are studying fulltime you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20–25 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working full-time.

You can estimate your workload by adding up the number of points you'll be doing. One point is roughly equal to 10–12 hours work.

Duration

You can usually complete the Master of Public Management in three or four trimesters over two years, when studying full time. If you're studying part time, the MPM can usually be completed in six trimesters over three years.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Public Management can usually be completed in four trimesters over two years.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Public Management is usually completed in two trimesters over one year.

Careers

If you're wanting a career or are already working in the government and non-government sectors, a Public Management qualification is a good choice.

You could find management work in central, local or regional government, in business, not-for-profits, consultancies and for iwi. You might also work as a researcher, advocate, campaign coordinator, lobbyist, strategist or planner.

About the MSc programme

This programme draws on a range of social science disciplines to examine China’s politics, international relations, economic history, society and culture.

Although this programme is based in the Department of Anthropology, it brings together LSE’s considerable multi-disciplinary expertise on China for the benefit of students seeking a comparative perspective of the country. A key feature of the MSc is that China is always considered in a comparative and historical framework. For example, you will be asked to compare and contrast China with India, and with the countries of modern Europe, in addition to other appropriate comparators.

This programme is an ideal preparation if you have career interests related to China, in business, government, or cultural exchange. It also provides a strong foundation for further research at PhD level in anthropology, economic history, government, international relations or social policy.

Graduate destinations

The programme is good preparation for research work in an academic discipline, but is also appropriate for those with career interests related to China and East Asia, for example, in business, culture, or government. Graduates of this programme have chosen a variety of careers, including as analysts, consultants, journalists, and government officials.
