This MSc provides an understanding of key concepts invaluable for employment and critical engagement across all sport sectors. The programme examines the commercialised and mediatised world of professional sport, and the realms of community recreation and physical activity.

Recognising that sport managers operate in a highly politicised environment, the programme reviews the role of government policy in shaping sporting opportunities and sport’s contribution to social policy agendas.

The programme critically assesses sport’s contribution to government social policy concerns (such as crime prevention, health improvement, education attainment, community building), and its role in conflict resolution, gender empowerment, disease prevention and poverty reduction in different parts of the world. It critically analyses a wide range of sport policy and sport management issues in the UK and compares these with experiences across a wide range of countries.

You will focus on management issues in contemporary sport organisations, the media’s role in sport management debates, and sport marketing and communications concepts.

The programme also explores fundamental aspects of research methods and links these to sport management concerns. Your understanding is enhanced through the extensive involvement of local and national sport organisations.

Programme structure

Your classes will consist of a combination of lectures, seminars, case studies, industry visits and discussions.

Courses:

  • Sport and the Media
  • Sport Marketing and Communications
  • Sport Policy
  • Sport Resource Management
  • Sport, Society and International Development

You will also be required to take research methods courses and to complete a dissertation

Learning outcomes

  • provide students with a critical understanding of the role of sport in alleviating social and economic problems at the local, national and international level
  • foster a theoretically informed appreciation of the role and impact of local, national and transnational government on sport policy
  • encourage students to consider the contribution of management theory to efficient and effective sport management practice
  • provide students with a theoretical understanding of the role of the mass media in framing contemporary sport policy and sport management
  • provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to identify then meet their career goals

Career opportunities

The programme provides the higher-order knowledge required for recent graduates to enter employment in the sport industries, and for current sport practitioners to advance their careers.

The qualification can lead to rewarding careers in areas such as sport marketing, sport sponsorship, sport events, sport development, sport social enterprises, sport facility management, and sport and international development.

The masters degree can also lead to PhD study.

This exciting course analyses and evaluates the commercial and management forces that have contributed to the success of sport business. It offers flexibility with an innovative combination of block and online delivery, making it suitable for those working in the sports sector and recent graduates who are looking to develop their knowledge and understanding of this fast growing and important industry.

Spectator and participatory sport is a global phenomenon and has recently become one of the fastest growing economic sectors for both developed and developing countries. Through engaging with and analysing the commercial, media and political drivers of change, you are able to identify the factors that have created such growth and critically discuss the implications for business, society, nation branding and identity.

Sport is a sophisticated and complex international business with billions of consumers watching and engaging with sporting events on a weekly or even daily basis. This course aims to develop professionals in the provision, promotion and marketing of sport who are able to fully capitalise on the opportunities that the sector presents.

Through studying marketing, sponsorship, media and law – and after spending time in a sports organisation on a professional work placement – you gain academic understanding and practical knowledge of the issues involved in successful sport business management. This will help you to engage, manage and shape the sport businesses of the future.

This course can only be studied with our partner in The Netherlands, the Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences. The course is taught in English and delivered by academics from both the University of Brighton and the Wittenborg University of Applied sciences.

Course structure

You will experience a dynamic blend of academic study, research and – through the placement module – hands-on learning. The combination of academic study and practical analysis has been designed to provide greater depth of knowledge and future career success.

Course delivery:

The emphasis of the course is on using a theoretical approach to analyse and evaluate the Sport Business sector. If you are already working in the sector you’ll be able to use your existing knowledge to underpin your studies, whilst if you are a recent graduate there is the opportunity for more supported learning.

All core modules are taught in intensive blocks of two to three days. Depending on the module this could include a combination of university-based teaching, online seminars, tutorial support and webinars. The Professional Enquiry module is a combination of teaching and online tutorials which will support you during an organisational experience or project. Some optional modules will be delivered entirely online and others will be all classroom based.

The flexibility of the teaching method for the Sport Business Management MSc facilitates combining studying for a masters with a professional career. It also means that your commitment to attending the university’s campus may be different from others studying the same course.

Syllabus

A distinctive feature of the course is the flexibility and choice of your final project. Guided and supported by your personal supervisor, you have several options available to you. Whether an academic dissertation or an applied piece of research, such as a business or enterprise project, the final project allows you to pursue an area of particular interest and helps you to build knowledge and skills for your future career.

The course will address contemporary issues recognised as the major challenges and opportunities for sport business management. This includes researching the complex relationships between sports business and governing bodies, pressure groups and government agencies, and analysing the mechanisms by which sport generates revenue through TV and media rights, gate receipts, sponsorship and merchandise.

Core management studies involving strategy, marketing, sponsorship, operations management, finance, law and human resources are integrated within various compulsory modules that make up the core of the course. You can study areas of personal interest through two optional modules.

Optional modules provide you with the opportunity to study how mental health can be compromised and enhanced at community and/or professional levels of sport and physical activity, in addition to investigating how the mental health needs of different populations can be addressed.

Following an introduction to major research methodologies, methods and approaches, undertaking an independent research dissertation on a topic of your choice will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of project and people management, how organisations address mental health and illness, and the ethical dilemmas involved in researching mental health in sport and physical activity contexts.

You will be encouraged to inform this project with any insight derived from relevant work experience in sport, physical activity and mental health settings. If you wish to undertake applied work experience to inform your studies, you will be supported to do so by engaging with key partners including Everton in the Community.

How will I study?

The course will be delivered in a variety of ways, including lectures, workshops, student-led seminars and discussions, tutorials, applied work experience, and practitioner-oriented mentoring.

You will typically be required to attend one afternoon/early evening session per week and engage in supported activity (e.g. tutorials) as appropriate.

There are no formal written examinations as part of the current assessment methods on this programme.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by academic staff who possess expertise in a variety of disciplines allied to sport, physical activity and mental health, including sociology, psychology, psychiatry, physiology, policy analysis, and performing arts.

Learning and Teaching

The University aims to shape 'confident learners' by enabling students to develop the skills to excel in their studies here and be transferable to further studies or the employment market. Staff and students form a community of learners who, together and independently, seek to generate and exchange knowledge. Over the duration of the course, students develop independent and critical learning skills, as well as building their confidence and expertise progressively through independent and collaborative research, problem solving, and analysis with the support of staff. Students take responsibility for their own learning and are encouraged to make use of the wide range of learning resources available.

In addition to the formally scheduled contact time (i.e., lectures, seminars, etc.), students are encouraged to access academic support from staff within the course team, personal tutors and the wide range of services to students within the University.

Key features of the student experience include:

- Active learning via numerous practical sessions
- Chances to enrich learning, for example, coaching courses
- Guest speakers
- Teaching informed by research and consultancy

Students also have the opportunity to interact with visiting students to help them better understand sport in different countries and cultures, whilst the Winchester Research Apprenticeship Programme (WRAP) enables students to work with academics on a genuine research project, so that they engage first-hand in cutting-edge scholarly activity and build vital transferable skills for their future.

The course is accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) Undergraduate Endorsement Scheme (BUES).
