This is an innovative programme bringing together knowledge from the disciplines of spatial planning and governance, leadership and change management, and community development, to offer a programme designed for those wishing to develop specialist and transferable skills for implementing service delivery, shaping spatial change, successful collaborative working, and span sectoral and organisational boundaries.

- Course purpose -

Community Planning and Governance has been designed to provide insight into the evolving governance relationship between people and place, and to critically discuss models of integrated service delivery for enhancing social, economic and environmental well-being.

- Teaching and learning assessment -

A variety of learning and teaching methods are adopted across the modules on this course, to place emphasis on independent, reflective and experiential learning, which include, for example, interactive lectures, facilitated seminars, cafe symposium style workshops, problem-based learning scenarios, reflective discussions, project work, case study examples and self-directed learning.

Assessments include professional reports, individual and group presentations, academic essays, personal reflective logs, and an independent community planning research project (at MSc level).

The field of planning practice (encompassing urban, community and regional planning, and related sub-specializations) has long been recognized as a professional field in Canada, as elsewhere in the world. Founded by Dr. H.P. Oberlander in 1951, the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) is one of the oldest planning schools in Canada. Its Vision is “Sustainability through the Democratization of Planning,” and in achieving that Vision, SCARP's Mission is “to advance the transition to sustainability through excellence in integrated policy and planning research, professional education and community service.” The objective of SCARP’s new Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) program is to further the Vision and Mission of the School by providing students, through cutting-edge content and innovative pedagogy, with the essential theory, skills, methods, and critical thinking and analytical tools they need to address the complex social and environmental issues of a rapidly urbanizing world. It is intensive and professionally oriented, and students emerge as well-rounded, critical, and creative agents of change.

It is ideal for those wishing to develop their understanding of the management and policy context of this work at a postgraduate level, especially for those who already have (or do not require) a professional qualification in Community and Youth Work. Seminars provide the opportunity for students to discuss and debate the issues, to share ideas and experience, broaden their understanding and test out their knowledge gained through the taught sessions and independent study. Classroom learning provides students with the latest research and critical theory on the subject area.

The MA Managing Community Practice provides the student with a learning opportunity within which they can apply and test understanding, knowledge and skills related to the managerial roles and responsibilities of their practice settings. A critical examination of the relationship of theory and practice is central to this. Core modules are structured to enable students to attend university for teaching on an average of one day per week (part time) or two days per week (full time), so that their study can fit around other commitments that they may have.

The programme is assessed through continual assessment using a range of methods including written assignments, reflective journals, individual and group presentations so there is an expectation that students will undertake independent study to prepare and plan for their classes, through reading relevant literature and legislation, journals and drawing on their current and previous practice experience.

The Community and Youth Work Programme is part of the School of Applied Social Sciences and is significantly involved with the Centre for Social Justice and Community Action at Durham University, as well as being a partner in many collaborative pieces of research and professional practice developments. Theoretical Contexts (20 Credits)
Aims to develop students' understanding and critical awareness of the contemporary dynamics of places and communities, seen from a variety of theoretical viewpoints. It also seeks to develop a critical appreciation of the links between these theoretical concerns and changing priorities in planning and regeneration policies. Ethical and personal development considerations form an essential part of this module.

Planning & Making Spatial Strategies (20 Credits)
Reviews the historical evolution of the spatial planning system in the UK, to review its key purposes and principles, and to offer opportunities for students to prepare planning policies for localities of their choice.

Managing Places & Spaces (20 Credits)
Considers how places came to be, various attempts over the years to shape them according to visions of how we should live, an appreciation of current thinking regarding the criteria to be applied to planning contemporary development, the role of development managements in the English planning system, and an understanding of some key methodologies for evaluating the quality of existing places. This is used as the foundation for on which to put forward a development proposal for a city centre site.

Dissertation (40 Credits)
Develops and enhances research skills, connections between theory and practice, the capacity to conceptualise and theorise, together with independent and reflective learning. It serves as the key mechanism for students to develop specialist knowledge and skills in a research topic of their choice.

Policy Implementation & Appraisal (20 Credits)
Critically examines the political, material and organisational context for public policy implementation and evaluation by considering roles and functions of its key players and the influences of previous policy outcomes. It also evaluates a range of approaches to policy resource generation, monitoring and evaluation and their outputs and outcomes.

Strategic & European Contexts (20 Credits)
Requires students to reflect on the interplay of economic, spatial and environmental priorities and their impact on the development and use of land with regard to the potential of different approaches to spatial regeneration in different European regions. A foreign field trip forms an assessed part of this module.

Research Methods (20 Credits)
Explores the nature of research, the identification of researchable agendas, choice of methodologies and development of research plans and protocols together with techniques of data collection and usage. It is a key support mechanism for students to undertake the Dissertation.

Sustainable Communities (20 Credits)
Critically examines historical interpretations of sustainable communities and their policy dimensions and expressions. Students undertake a systematic analysis of a locality and generate sustainability strategies, working to local practitioners as clients and relating proposals to local delivery mechanisms.

Developed in consultation with Industry and the Planning Institute of Australia, the study of Urbanism is a pathway to specialisation as a professional urban planner, urban designer, heritage architect or consultant. This two-year postgraduate program has been developed to address the urgent need for specialists in the planning, development and architectural industries who understand the complex interrelationships between the various aspects of environmental planning and can work at the apex of local and international urban design.

The sustainable management of our cities and regions is one of the most pressing issues in the 21st century. Urban and regional planners are at the forefront of this challenge: working in government and the private sector to guide urban and regional change and to manage the social, environmental and economic impacts of development. Urban and regional planners prepare plans and policies at a range of levels including national, state, regional, local, precinct and site, with specialist planners working in urban design, heritage conservation and housing policy.

The Urbanism (Urban & Regional Planning) Program provides the required knowledge and skills for professional planning practice within Australia. Graduates of the Master of Urban and Regional Planning are eligible, subject to professional experience requirements, for corporate membership of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). The program aims to introduce you to contemporary planning theories and debates while instilling professional expertise in key areas of planning practice.

The program then culminates in an Integrated Studio capstone unit where you will apply your knowledge to a complex real-world project. The Studio will emulate professional practice by working with community groups, developers and/or politicians to develop an appreciation of the interrelated strategic, economic, social and environmental context in which urban design occurs.

Course structure

In order to meet the high professional standards required by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), students are required to study for core modules as part of the course and have the opportunity for specialist study in allied areas.

Course delivery is divided into three parts:

(i) A taught portion requiring attendance at the university for lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes, individual supervision sessions and team working.

We explore the role of planning as a set of regulatory mechanisms but more importantly as a means of identifying opportunities and assisting developers (be they in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors).

We have been running professionally accredited planning education courses at LSBU successfully for over 40 years (50 in 2018).

This MA is aimed at graduates from a variety of disciplines who are looking to pursue a worthwhile and challenging course that can lead to an exciting and stable career in spatial planning and related fields.

The qualification is fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute, which means you can become a licentiate member on graduation. Professional accreditation

The MSc Urban Planning: Developing and Transitional Regions is fully accredited by:
- the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
- the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This means that on successful completion of the MSc, graduates can register for - the Assessment of Professional Competence procedures of RICS and RTPI and work towards becoming full members.

Teaching and learning

Learning methods include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, and practical and project work. Some modules include site visits and fieldwork, which provide you with direct experience of practical and current issues.

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, each module involving approximately 200 hours of student input and approximately 36 hours of staff contact, normally delivered through three-hour teaching blocks over a 12-week period.

Each course module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or design work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations and practical exercises.

Field trips

Field trips include an international field trip to Europe in the Autumn plus a range of national and local site and institutional visits especially to London throughout the academic year.

Not only is the MSc Urban Planning: Developing and Transitional Regions a RICS and RTPI professionally recognised qualification, it is also widely regarded as providing the transferable skills, critical knowledge and understanding necessary in many fields of work in the built and natural environment. Today our alumni can be found in senior positions in some of the largest international planning and environmental consultancies, in government agencies, in large NGOs and campaigning organisations across the globe.

The long-standing reputation of the Department of Planning in producing highly skilled, enthusiastic and very capable professional planners aids the employability of our graduates. We are the first port of call for many employers when they are seeking new graduate planners.

Free language courses for students - the Open Module

Free language courses are available to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students on many of our courses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

Please note that the free language courses are not available if you are:
- studying at a Brookes partner college
- studying on any of our teacher education courses or postgraduate education courses.

Research highlights

With more than 600 students engaging a wide range of research topics in our undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree programmes, including master's by research, the department is widely recognised as a leading educator in environment, design and development subjects. With a complement of over 60 teaching, administrative, technical and research staff, the department performs a leading role in research and consultancy, with clients and projects covering subjects from local concerns to multinational organisations, government and industry.
