This MA, launched in 2015, is the third of three related pathways. The first, the MA in Applied Anthropology and Community and Youth Work, was started in 1992 and is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in youth and community work and who need a professional qualification.

A second pathway, the MA in Applied Anthropology and Community Development, was launched in 2012 as an option for international or home students who do not need an NYA qualification and for those who want to specialise in community development.

This third pathway has been created in response to a growing number of applicants with an arts background and arts interests, and is aimed at students who wish to work in community arts. The three pathways entail different placements but are taught together, providing much opportunity for exchange of ideas and collaboration amongst students.

Modules & Structure

The MA combines an academic programme of lectures, seminars and tutorial assignments with practical experience.

Modules are taken over one academic year if you are studying full-time, and two years if you are studying part-time (part-time study only available to home/EU students).

Full-time students attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays and spend the rest of the week on fieldwork placements and library studies.

Part-time students attend on Thursdays in one year and Tuesdays in the other.

Increasing employment prospects are central to this programme.

Our graduates find work directly or indirectly related to the disciplines relatively quickly after graduating, or even while on the programme. The majority of our students gain work in youth work or community work. Examples of recent graduate employment include:

Full-time health youth worker for a London Borough, leading on LGBTQ awareness and homophobic bullying
Community Centre based youth worker
Mentoring and Befriending Co-ordinator at a civil society equalities organisation
Community Development Worker in a social work team in Hong Kong
Some seek and gain work in a wide range of other settings, often shaped by the particular interests that they develop during their time with us, such as working with refugees or with disability groups. Others join social enterprises to bid for contracts, join newly developing cooperatives or established NGOs in the UK and abroad.

Course outline

We provide a challenging and flexible learning environment for registered nurses to develop in community specialist practice. As well as a broad knowledge in relation to public health, you'll develop specialist skills in aspects such as health assessment, clinical care and case management. This course will last 40 weeks at full time study or 80 weeks part time.

Our course is half theory, half practice, facilitated in an area specific to your subject. There will also be opportunities to gain alternative practice experience in another relevant setting during the course - you will be encouraged to undertake five days alternative placement to provide a wide perspective of Community Learning Disabilities Nursing. Students are also actively encouraged to work with other health professionals to enhance their knowledge and understanding.

Graduate destinations

Successful completion of the course will allow you to apply for the NMC Nursing register, recording this qualification as a V100 Community Practitioner Nurse Prescriber. This will enable you to work as a Community Learning Disabilities Nurse and progress to work as a team leader in your field.

If you wish to take your learning further, you could use your qualification to study at a Masters level.

Other admission requirements

If you apply for this course you must be current on the NMC Nursing register and you will need to provide evidence of study at level 5/6 within the last five years or complete an approved study skills course.

You will be interviewed for selection for this programme. The interview panel may include Trust staff, employers, mentors/practice teachers and university staff. During the interview you will be offered advice on the suitability of the award dependent on factors such as recent evidence of prior learning, and your personal and professional development needs.

You will need support from a NHS Health Trust or your employer and be able to secure a placement in your chosen area of practice, with access to a Practice Teacher. You will need to have completed a Disclosure Baring Service clearance, and this will be checked prior to your commencement on the course.

If you work in Cumbria, Lancashire or Blackpool areas, you may be eligible to apply for a place on the programme funded and supported by one of the local NHS Trusts. The NHS Trusts advertise places on the programme each year through NHS Jobs usually in spring/early summer. This course prepares registered nurses and midwives to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional standards for specialist community public health nurses (Health Visiting or School Nursing or Sexual Health Adviser) and is suitable for those who wish to develop a career in public health nursing. The course content will cover the four principles of public health practice and students will be involved in: the search for health needs; the stimulation of awareness of health needs; the influence on policies affecting health; the facilitation of health enhancing activities. The course comprises 50 per cent theory and 50 per cent practice. Assessment methods vary and include: examinations, essays, presentations and business reports in addition to practice assessment by a named practice teacher.

The course will enable registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse on the third part of the Nursing and Midwifery register. The course has also been mapped to the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework to assist with career progression.

DBS CHECKS

Throughout this course you will be working with vulnerable groups of individuals including children. In order to ensure that the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing offers places on their programmes to the most suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). The Faculty of Health and Wellbeing will be able to guide you through this process once you have been successfully offered a conditional place at the University. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The course is designed for practitioners who have post-registration practice experience and bring a variety of professional and life experiences. The demands and requirements of postgraduate study require an emphasis on informal methods of learning and the promotion of independence in the planning and organisation of learning. This requires your involvement in a variety of learning and teaching approaches designed to further develop your skills of academic discourse, independent study and scholarly enquiry. These approaches may include group discussions, problem-based learning, action learning, seminars, reflection and work and web-based learning, further enhanced through a commitment to shared learning.

Assessment is through a mixture of assignments, examinations (short answers and multiple choice), viva, portfolio and practice assessment. The practice assessment requires completion of the Practice Assessment Document that demonstrates achievement of the NMC standards of proficiency for specialist community public health nurses (2004). The NMC standards will be formatively assessed in semesters one and two, whereas in the third semester you will be summatively assessed. Learning contracts will be developed in partnership with you, your practice teacher and an identified educationalist to support the achievement of the NMC standards along with individually identified learning outcomes.

The aim of this course is to prepare and develop registered nurses and midwives to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional standards for specialist community public health nurses. The course offers the opportunity to practice as a Health Visitor or School Nurse or Sexual Health Adviser.

Wexham Glyndwr University is the only provider within North Wales which offers the MSc Health and Social Care (Community Specialist Practice) programme which covers the District Nursing qualification.

The course is designed for qualified nurses who hold a current registration as a nurse (part 1) with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council Register (equivalent to parts 1 or 12 of the NMC Register). The programme enables the student to qualify as a District Nurse and record the qualification with the NMC.

An attractive feature of the programme is that the Post Graduate Diploma element of the courses can be taken full time for 1 year (self-funded) or part time over 2 years (possibility of Welsh Government funding if you work in Wales) or flexibly by a module by module approach (over 4 years).

The specific aims of the programme are to:
-Broaden the student’s understanding of key aspects of district nursing including the acquisition of coherent and detailed knowledge at the forefront of care.
-Prepare students for study and competent practice at a specialist level within district nursing in order to meet the NMC (2001) Standards for Specialist Practice.
-Develop a critical awareness of the role and responsibilities of Specialist Community Nurses in contemporary society.
Utilise contemporary research and advanced scholarship to critically analyse and evaluate key aspects and developments in District Nursing.

Additional features:
-You will be taught by a dedicated team of professional nurses who have backgrounds in District Nursing and Community Nursing Roles.
-On successful completion of the Community Specialist Practice Programme, the District Nursing qualification will be recordable with the NMC.

Assessment & Teaching

District Nursing students are assessed in a variety of ways over the course of their studies. The balance between the different forms of assessment is determined by the different aims and learning outcomes of the modules.

Assessment methods include academic assignments, case studies, poster presentations and examinations. As the programme is about learning in practice, all students have a clinical portfolio which is completed as students’ progress through the modules. All students are allocated a mentor/sign off mentor within practice who will assess your competency against the NMC Specialist Practice Standards for District Nursing.

Career Prospects

On successful completion of the Community Specialist Practice Programme, the District Nursing qualification will be recordable with the NMC. The CIM Introductory Certificate provides an internationally recognised qualification in marketing. We provide all the materials necessary to prepare you for this award as part of your course fees. In order to achieve this award, two CIM assessments must be successfully completed in addition to your MBA study.

PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner Award

PRINCE2® (Projects in Controlled Environments) is the internationally recognised project management programme. Online learning materials are provided as part of your course fees. Additional PRINCE2 assessment must be successfully completed in addition to your MBA study.

MBA Business Event

Students will have the opportunity to participate in the MBA business event (Brussels in 2014/15) in their first year. The MBA business event is optional and the cost should not exceed £250 for flights and accommodation (If travelling from the UK). Students normally allow an additional £250 for their expenses.

Please Note: Additional fees, over and above your course fees, will be payable for the optional elements, for example for travel and accommodation for the Business Event or by the examination or membership bodies for membership and assessments associated with the qualifications.

Methods of Learning

The programme can be undertaken anywhere in the world, as we use facilitative technologies to enable your engagement with the course team, fellow students and course materials. Normally, you will complete three blocks of 14 weeks study. You will be expected to interact with the course team in online activities and in significant additional study, learning and networking and to engage online in development activities associated with your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. After the completion of the taught modules you will have a further nine months to complete your Business Research Project. The distance learning programme normally runs twice a year with September and February starts.

Per module you should expect to spend between 10/20 hours per week engaging with online activities and study through NILE as well as self-directed study time.

Assessments

The programme has a combination of assessment involving practical work, essays, reports, case studies and examinations. The Business Research Project Procurement is a 15,000 word independent research project.
