The MA in Community Leadership is a unique course developed and inspired by individuals who work within communities as activists and change makers. The course is based upon the concept of a learning community, whereby learners come together to share experiences and best practice. It works on the belief that within the context of community leadership, individuals learn best from a peer led programme.

The course is grounded in the educational philosophy of Paulo Freire, and uses action reflection praxis as a basis for learning, allowing students to take new theoretical concepts and critically challenge them within their own communities. It also utilises and explores the management concepts of the community educator Mary Parker Follett (1868 to 1933); a woman recognised as ahead of her time in management science and whose ideas are hugely pertinent to the community sector today. The staff engaged in the delivery of the programme are all practitioners and internationally recognised in their fields. Their role is to share their knowledge on a peer to peer basis and support learners in developing new and innovative solutions to current issues.

INDUSTRY LINKS

An academic qualification in community leadership provides an excellent and recognised foundation for a career in the field. The course is designed to prepare the student for senior positions of community leadership within the third sector, the public sector, governance and politics, and also to play a leading role on the international stage. The course provides excellent opportunities for international, national, regional, and local networking and the development of personal social capital which will serve to effectively enhance employability prospects.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The course is available part time and includes a flexible teaching pattern. Some modules are taught in short intensive blocks of five days. Other modules adopt a blended teaching approach where lectures are delivered once per month.

This makes it possible for students that are working or live at a distance to be able to take individual modules without regular weekly attendance at the University. However, the ethos of a strong peer learning community is central to all modes of learning, regardless of being either classroom or web based.

A range of assessment methods will be used during your course. Your skills, knowledge and understanding will be formally and informally assessed through written assignments, oral presentations and through practical tasks. Opportunities will also be provided throughout the course for informal, formative assessment of your skills, knowledge and understanding. The course can be taken at either MA, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate level. Students who successfully complete three taught modules are eligible for the award of PG Certificate.

The course focuses on core themes relating to politics and governance, faith, gender, global society, and community resilience. In addition to the MA, students will also be eligible for an optional exit award in Strategic Leadership at Level 7 from the Institute of Leadership and Management. Through the Interfaith Dialogue route, he course offers an annual field visit to an international destination, usually Cordoba in Spain, but this varies according to availability. Further international visits and collaborations are available at the discretion of the course tutor and subject to numbers.

Work Placements

Programme Structure

ASSESSMENT

The MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) is a work-based Master’s course designed to enable aspiring school leaders and managers to gain a Master’s degree which contributes to the development of the knowledge, understanding and skills required to allow them to articulate and enact informed strategic vision, values and aims in relation to professional practice.

The MSc in Educational Leadership course has at its heart the Specialist Qualification for Headship (SQH) which is embedded in the Into Headship modules. This element of the programme will be accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and so this work-based Master’s course incorporates both a professional and academic award.

The development of the Into Headship modules is the result of an ongoing formal collaboration with the Scottish College for Educational Leadership (SCEL), Local Authorities, the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), Education Scotland, four other Universities and the highly successful SQH Western Consortium (Universities of Glasgow, Stirling and Strathclyde). Building on the success and impact of previous programmes, including the MSc in Educational Leadership (with Scottish Qualification for Headship), this new programme is designed to take account of current policy and the professional standards framework (GTCS, 2012) to offer participants an opportunity to develop strategic leadership and management competencies.

The programme, which is introduced for the first time in 2015, offers an opportunity for participants to further develop their professional learning and strategic leadership and management practices in a supportive, flexible, creative and challenging learning environment.

Accreditation

The Into Headship modules EDUP021 (Into Headship 1) and EDUP022 (Into Headship 2) will be accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

Structure and content

The MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) programme will comprise three stages:

Middle Leadership

Into Headship

Extended Induction

Prior to 2018, candidates may undertake EDUP021 Into Headship 1 and EEDUP022 Into Headship 2 as a Postgraduate Certificate. After 2018 these modules will form the Diploma stage of this qualification.

Stage one: Middle Leadership

The aim of this stage is to develop an understanding of the principles underpinning middle leadership for those aspiring to lead and manage the improvement of educational practices which impact on outcomes for children and young people in their setting and/or wider educational community. During stage one students will undertake one of the core modules, either EDUP001 Engaging critically with professional practices (20 credits at SCQF level 11) or EDUP007 Examining Professional Practices: Work-Based Learning (20 credits at SCQF level 11), then complete the Postgraduate Certificate with EDUP003 Middle Leadership: principles and practices (40 credits at SCQF level 11).

Stage Two: Into Headship

The aim of this stage is to foster a future orientated strategic stance to initiate and lead change for improvement through engagement with the school community. This will be achieved through building and applying sound knowledge and understanding of strategic leadership and management theories and practices in the context of the role of the headteacher. The modules will enable participants to develop an understanding of the place of values in leading a school community and explore ways of addressing some of the challenges this poses as well as enhancing the interpersonal and personal skills, confidence and resilience for those preparing to move into headship. This stage will provide an opportunity to develop practice in the use of critical enquiry and reflection to enhance participants’ strategic leadership practices and to evaluate and strengthen the impact of these practices on the school community. This stage is designed to enable participants to develop the strategic leadership and management competences as specified by the by the appropriate professional standards provided by the GTCS in Scotland to facilitate their transition into headship.

Stage Three: Extended Induction

During stage three participants will complete the MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) through undertaking the final two modules in the programme EDUP023 Extended Induction 1 (20 credits SCQF level 11) and EDUP024 Extended Induction 2 (40 credits SCQF level 11)

Delivery and assessment

This course is offered on a part-time basis only. The period of study is normally three years for the MSc, although this programme is unlikely to be taken over three consecutive years. Candidates must complete six modules for the MSc degree. The modules will be delivered through a blended learning format designed to facilitate both individual and collaborative work. The format is a mix of face-to-face seminar days, guided self-study, online and work-based learning.

Employability

The MSc in Educational Leadership (with SQH) develops knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance leadership and management practices and support career-long professional development.

Specialist Community Nurses provide up-to–date, specialist and highly technical care to patients in their own environments as well as supporting families and carers. Course Aims

The course has been designed to produce specialist community nursing practitioners who are safe, competent, and professional, to lead district nursing in a community nursing setting. This includes meeting Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for Specialist Community Nursing, Education and Practice. You will develop your leadership skills whilst on the programme, so that you are able to plan and lead services and initiatives which promote health, support long-term conditions, and provide specialist nursing care, including community practitioner prescribing as applicable to your role. You will achieve the recordable qualification through the Postgraduate diploma; however, there is the opportunity to undertake a dissertation through a part-time route to convert this post-graduate diploma to a Master’s Degree.

A new vision developed for District Nursing (DH 2013) Care in local communities: a new vision and model for district nursing will underpin the content and delivery of the pathway with a focus on 'Compassion in Practice' underpinning the new model focussing on:
- Population and case load management
- Support and care for patients who are unwell, recevoering at home and at end of life
- Support and care for independence

The aim of this programme is to support the development and enhancement of essential knowledge and skills in the registered practitioner to equip them for a career in specialist community nursing. This will be actualised through building upon the theoretical and clinical basis of their specialised area of practice, through delivery of a cohertent programme of study.

The District Nursing pathway will have a contemporary focus and is designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards for Specialist Education and Practice (UKCC 2001).

The programme will support students in applying their skills of critical reflection to enhance their professional, personal and academic development. It will encourage the development of sound District Nursing practice based on the critical application of research and evidence and will introduce students to theories and practice of leadership and partnership working.

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme.

Completing your Masters

The Postgraduate Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting & School Nursing pathways) and the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing pathway) awards – registerable with the NMC – each comprise of six taught modules to meet individual or service requirements in year 1 as a full time student.

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma will lead to the NMC approved specialist and registerable qualification ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)’, ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing)’ or the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing), depending upon the route that the student registers for.

Students who have met the requirements for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma will be eligible to proceed into year 2, onto the Masters’ award – subject to the rules of progression. The programme will develop a critical and discerning practitioner who will be able to innovate and evaluate change in health and social care practice based on a sound knowledge and evidence base.

It will provide the opportunity to develop clinical leadership necessary to achieve effective provision of care through and inter-professional approach to education across disciplines and organisations.

It aims to enhance students’ competence in complex decision making to enable them to make a significant contribution to service development through innovation, leadership and research.
