This full-time Master’s course is for registered nurses wishing to pursue a career in community nursing. It leads to an MSc in Community Health Studies, a recordable specialist practitioner qualification with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) in district nursing or general practice nursing.

The course aims to:

Develop a critical awareness and understanding of discipline specific knowledge, informed by current practice and scholarship.
Judiciously apply the evidence-base to clinical situations that are complex and justify decisions to the inter-professional team.
Develop discipline specific competencies to Masters practice level demonstrating self-direction and the ability to act autonomously in the management of patient care, within the scope of professional practice.
The course consists of three core generic modules and one core specialist module equating to at least 600 hours of student engagement. The focus of learning and teaching is to link theory with practice and therefore the modules are split into 50% theory and 50% practice. The theory covered during the modules aims to prepare you for the supervised clinical practice you will be undertaking during the course.

Successful completion of a dissertation will lead to the award of MSc Community Health Studies.

For the practice element of the course, you will work alongside a practice teacher or sign-off mentor. A total of 600 hours in practice must be achieved during the programme. You must have the agreement of your employer to release you for the necessary theory and practice hours.

The Decker School of Nursing graduate nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through June 19, 2019.

In the Master of Science program (MS), students select one of four functional roles to pursue as a clinical nurse specialist, administrator, educator or nurse practitioner. Dual roles are also available for additional credit.

The Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) program is designed to prepare Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists to respond more efficiently to changes in health care delivery and emerging health care needs. The DNP focuses on providing leadership for evidence-based practice, and will incorporate the advanced practice content currently included in the master's program.

Community healthcare is undergoing rapid and immense change following structural changes and reorganisation within NHS Wales. What will this course cover?

The course is based on a work based project involving primary research and/or an extended literature review in their area of interest.
You will then need to produce a dissertation based on that project of about 15.000 words.

Support and supervision for the dissertation will be offered on an individual basis and guided reading for further study will be provided as necessary.

The virtual learning environment will be fully utilised to support students in distance learning and communication will be maintained through discussion boards with supervisors and other students.

The Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health offers five graduate degrees, available both full-time and part-time. With the exception of the Bioethics program, applicants are strongly advised to have some background in statistics and quantitative methods. In addition, field and employment experience are considered, especially for the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. Documented interest and experience in global health is required for participation in the Global Public Health emphasis.

The Master of Science in Community Health (MScCH) degree is an innovative program designed to meet the needs of experienced health professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in public health. It is intended for practising health professionals and/or individuals who can demonstrate significant experience in the health care field. Five fields are offered:

• enable students to gain theoretical knowledge in relation to public health and health promotion, research and practice insight
• completion to MSc level further enables the student to complete a primary research study of relevance to public health and health promotion

The Public Health and Health Promotion course is mapped to the National Occupational Standards, Public Health Career Framework and contributes to attainment of practitioner and/ or specialist public health status (UKPHR).

The Public Health and Health Promotion programme covers historical background, current developments and future direction potentials of relevance in health and innovation in public health and health promotion practice.

A particular strength of the Public Health and Health Promotion course is the short observation placement module, enabling students to experience an area of practice interest as part of their development.

Students on the Public Health and Health Promotion course also undertake a primary research study as a requirement for completion to MSc qualification.

Public Health and Health Promotion Course Structure

Full-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study two days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) from October to April and dissertations submitted in September of the same year. Part-time Public Health and Health Promotion students will study one day a week (Wednesdays in the first year, Fridays in the second year) over two years, and dissertations are submitted in September of the third year. All modules are core and therefore required to be successfully passed, there are no optional modules available in the Public Health and Health Promotion programme.

The programme can be studied on a full or part time basis, the full time programme is 52 weeks long and part time is 104. Your learning will be 50% theory and 50% practice, and both components are equally weighted for assessment purposes. You will normally be sponsored or seconded by an NHS Trust who provide a practice placement and a Practice Teacher / Mentor who will support your 50% learning in practice. They work in collaboration with the academic team and have a key role in facilitating your practice learning and opportunities, providing support, supervision and guidance in practice to ensure the award outcomes for practice are met.
The programme includes a range of core and route specific option modules which means you will be exposed to a range of opportunities enabling you to become a critical reflector; able to analyse and evaluate theory and practice from an evidence base; identify need; instigate, lead and manage change in complex and demanding situations.
A variety of teaching and learning methods including web based learning are incorporated into the modules. Assessment strategies are planned to ensure that theoretical concepts are linked to practice.
You will have the opportunity to undertake modules with a range of other professionals including post qualified children’s social work students.
