Public relations specialisms are expanding too, and graduates are gaining jobs in a number of areas including crisis management, corporate social responsibility, media relations, corporate communication, sponsorship and internal communication.

The MA International Public Relations and Global Communications Management is a unique one year course that develops the skills and techniques required to practice public relations and communications at an international level.

Public relations, at its heart, is about communication between an organisation and its public(s), but 21st century public relations - with the advent of new media - is embedded in everything from politics and business to celebrity. PR is now firmly at the heart of strategic organisational planning.

Aside from gaining valuable practical skills, you are introduced to business, organisational and PR theory so that you can apply critical thinking to professional scenarios to further the effectiveness and quality of public relations that is practiced in industry. This synthesis of theory and practice culminates in a final dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words where you have the opportunity to apply what you have learnt to an area of personal PR interest. This piece of advanced academic study would enable you to embark on further research in the field of international public relations, should you wish to do so.

The course is delivered in English by Stirling academics with teaching assistantship by Western-educated local media specialists, which involves both intensive face-to-face teaching and online instruction. Throughout the course, students will attend lectures, seminars and discussions by/with leading media personalities in Vietnam. The full-time course takes 16 months to complete and the part-time version takes 27 months. Students completing the course will be awarded a University of Stirling’s MSc in Media and Communications Management degree. We are currently recruiting for the next intake, to be started in October 2015.

Course objectives

Students completing the course will be awarded a University of Stirling’s MSc in Media and Communications Management degree (180 Scottish Qualifications Framework points [SCQF]). We also offer the Diploma for those who successfully complete six modules (120 SCQF) and the Certificate for those who successfully complete three modules (60 SCQF). Internationally oriented and comparative in approach, the learning outcomes include:

- a theoretical and case study-based foundation in communications management, including marketing, branding, internal and crisis management; media economics, finance and business management strategy

- appropriate management skills and an analytical perspective on the communications and media industries

- training in appropriate research methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative

English language requirements

Structure and content

The Media and Communications Management course includes six face-to-face and two online courses, plus a dissertation of 12,000 words at the end of the coursework period. Dedicated UK-based academics will visit Vietnam at regular intervals to lecture students. Western-educated local academics will conduct tutorials and moderate guest lectures and seminars. Leading the course will be Professor Matthew Hibberd.

Learning activities and assessment

Teaching on the full-time and executive programmes involves a combination of formal lectures, group discussions, tutorials, seminars and directed reading. Generally the programmes aim to integrate applied and theoretical knowledge with assessment processes that test both knowledge of the disciplines and their application. Each module represents approximately 100 hours of study time, of which typically 24 hours is contact time with the module tutor(s) and the remaining 76 hours is made up of pre-reading, directed reading, preparatory work and assessment.

Methods of assessment are varied and linked to learning requirements. They include open and closed book examination, essays, coursework assignments and case studies.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

STUDY TRIPS

Students will take part in an international study trip of one week in one European Fashion Capital. They will have the opportunity to meet with leading industry professionals and visit companies in the fashion, design and luxury industries.

During the company visits students will work on a project relating to one of these industries and in alignment with their future career ambitions.

INTERNSHIP

Each student will undertake an internship of a minimum of three months in a company of their choice at the end of the classroom part of the program. The internship will contribute directly to the content of the Final Management Project and may take place anywhere in the world.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project which will be undertaken under the supervision of a GGSB professor.
Students will focus on a management aspect of the fashion, design and luxury industries; they are also encouraged to choose the subject of the Final Management Project in coherence with their future career goals. It is possible to complete the project in parallel with an employment or an internship in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in a globally competitive business environment. The program is taught in English, and no prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Students have the possibility of learning French or another foreign language such as Spanish or Chinese during the program.
This language component, although not compulsory, is highly recommended for students who intend to pursue an international career, since companies in the Fashion, Design and Luxury industry are currently recruiting personnel speaking the language of the country in which they are based, in addition to English and in-demand languages like Chinese or Russian.

Teaching on the full-time programme involves a combination of formal lectures, group discussions, tutorials, seminars and directed reading. Generally the programmes aim to integrate applied and theoretical knowledge with assessment processes that test both knowledge of the disciplines plus their application and limitations. Each course represents approximately 100 hours of study time, of which typically 24 hours is contact time with the course tutor(s)and the remaining 76 hours is made up of pre-reading, directed reading, preparatory work and assessment.

Why Bradford?

The course offers a small number of students the opportunity to participate in a student exchange programme whereby they spend semester 2 (six months) studying at one or two of our collaborative institutions [E.M. Lyon (École de Management Lyon France, Kozminski University (Warsaw), EADA (Barcelona) and Audencia Ecole de Management (Nantes)].

Students who participate in the exchange will take the distance learning version of the Research Methods module (MAN4122M) offered by the School of Management and other subject electives in the host institutions.

Modules

Initially, students take a number of compulsory modules to provide the foundations for an understanding of general management and business disciplines. In the second semester, study will focus on international & strategic perspectives, including six compulsory subjects and the opportunity yo choose one elective subject from a range of over 20. At this stage a small number of students have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner business schools overseas. The final part of the programmes is the dissertation looking at a specific international business topic.

Learning activities and assessment

Teaching on the full-time programme involves a combination of formal lectures, group discussions, tutorials, seminars and directed reading. Generally the programme aims to integrate applied and theoretical knowledge with assessment processes that test both knowledge of the disciplines and their application. Each course represents approximately 100 hours of study time of which typically 24 hours is contact time with the course tutor(s) and the remaining 76 hours is made up of pre-reading, directed reading, preparatory work and assessment.

Methods of assessment are varied and linked to learning requirements. They include open and closed book examination, essays, individual and group coursework assignments and case studies.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Our international business graduates are in high demand amongst multinational organisations and international consultancy firms.

There are also opportunities to establish or accelerate a career as a country or product manager, or develop an international perspective for their own business.

The sectors and jobs that our MSc students achieve upon graduation vary depending on their previous experience and pathway taken. In terms of looking at career progression it is useful to consider where alumni are three years after graduation. Looking at the data derived from the School’s continued ranking in the Financial Times Master’s in Management Rankings, alumni continue to operate in a variety of sectors and that three years after graduation on average 25% of them are in senior manager roles and 20% in junior management positions.

This course recognises this industry shift and explores the drivers and dynamics of modern corporate communications and its relationship with marketing and public relations. You focus on stakeholder management, global marketing, brand management, reputation management, media relations and social media.

Taught by researchers who combine their professional experience with the latest research expertise, you’ll examine key theories and concepts and gain the practical professional skills employers are looking for.

The Global and Strategic Marketing Research Centre (GLOSMARC) is the Business School’s established and esteemed centre of excellence for scholarly research work.

Course content

The course provides you with an essential foundation in communications theory, marketing strategy and public relations practice.

You’ll explore the history and theory of corporate communications, connecting communications to overall corporate strategy. Alongside this, you’ll study the latest thinking in important areas of marketing such as international marketing, marketing strategy and marketing research, as well as understanding how organisations manage their brands and identities, marketing communications and key priorities such as sustainability.

During the Public Relations in Practice module, you’ll work alongside classmates in interactive workshops that focus on the practical applications of some key PR tools and techniques. You’ll cover essential skills such as campaign planning, personal communication skills, influencing techniques and writing for PR.

In addition, you’ll choose from a selection of optional modules that allow you to focus on a topic that matches your interests and career plans.

In the final semester you will apply your skills and knowledge to either a research dissertation or a practical consultancy project. Our consultancy projects give you the opportunity to work with a live business situation, make links with industry and gain work experience that can be exceptionally rewarding.

About the program

The combined Masters degree in Communications and Project Management enables students interested in a career in corporate communications, public relations and strategic and cultural communication to acquire expertise in the planning, implementation and management of projects and programs. The addition of project and program management skills enables graduates to access more strategic positions in their organisation and to be responsible for overseeing new initiatives involving the management of scope, time, cost and risk. Communications is also a key competency of project and program management, and it is therefore possible that students pursuing a project management career might wish to obtain a combined degree with communication. Students graduate with a Master of Communication and a Master of Project Management upon completion. Graduates of this combined degree are internationally recognised by the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Intensive mode delivery

In addition to becoming knowledgeable in both communication and project management, students will learn through intensive mode delivery. This delivery method allows participants to receive 40 hours of combined lectures, discussion groups, case studies and workshops during contact hours per subject. International students are required to be on campus every week.
