Information Systems Evaluation and Integration Group

Academics who teach on this exciting programme are part of the Information Systems Evaluation and Integration Group which is a research centre of excellence that supports a number of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded networks and projects. This group is housed in the Brunel Business School in collaboration with the excellent-rated (RAE score 5) School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics. ISEing is the first multi-disciplinary research group to receive government funding in the areas of Information Systems Evaluation, Enterprise Integration and eGovernment.

Teaching

The course is structured so that full-time students take four 15 credit modules per term, plus a 60 credit dissertation module in term 3. Each 15 credit module demands 150 hours of study comprised of 22 hours of tutor arranged contact time and a minimum of 128 hours of non-contact student managed time. Each module has its own form of assessment held at the end of the term in which the module runs, and can include essays, projects and group assignments. The dissertation is an extended research oriented task conducted individually and offers the opportunity for students to undertake in-depth investigation in to a topic of their choosing. The consultancy project or dissertation gives you the opportunity to explain to yourself what you have learned about business and management and to demonstrate how you will apply this knowledge. Writing the consultancy project or dissertation provides you with a unique opportunity to consolidate the evidence you have assembled during the course and to subject it to rigorous academic analysis and practical application. As a guide the consultancy project or dissertation will be between 15,000 and 20,000 words.

On this course you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

The programme then concludes with a dissertation project.

Learning, teaching and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of examinations and coursework. The taught element of the programme is then complemented by a substantial piece of research leading to the completion of a dissertation. You should ensure that your choice of elective modules is consistent with your intended dissertation topic area.

Personal development
You will acquire skills in the following areas: giving presentations, team working, report writing, negotiation and IT skills.

Core modules taught on this MSc will enable you to develop a wide range of business and transferable skills and knowledge demanded by graduate employers. These include:
-Interpreting financial statements covering income, balances and cash flow
-Budgetary control and analysing business costs using Cost Volume Profit and contribution analysis
-Improving business performance and employee well-being through influencing organisational behaviour
-Developing marketing and pricing strategies, plans and marketing mix policies
-Operational planning and management including: product, service and process design; choice of layout and technology; statistical stock control and MRPI

MSc Strategy & International Business will provide you with a rigorous and comprehensive understanding of strategy and international business issues, in both developed and emerging economies. With the increasing globalisation of business and the revolution in information and communications technologies, no company can afford to ignore the international dimension of strategy.

Most, if not all, companies require internationalisation strategies, be they simple export or franchising arrangements, or complex and risky international joint ventures and/or foreign direct investment. These activities all require an understanding of the international business environment, which you will gain by studying this programme.

The strategy component of this degree will give you the knowledge and skills required to analyse companies’ strategic situations and to solve complex strategic problems. The international business component of the degree will develop your ability to assess and develop internationalisation strategies and operations, as well as your skills in international and cross-cultural management.
