To be an effective leader in student affairs, professionals must first be knowledgeable of how students grow and develop during the college years and how institutions can be intentional in facilitating the growth process. Leaders in higher education need to employ proven managerial strategies in order to be successful and must pay careful attention to the management of human resources, finances, information technology, and physical infrastructure. In addition to this, leaders should know how to adjust their administrative style if problems are encountered and be able to ground both successes and shortcomings in administrative theory.

By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings, and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, students are often able to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study without compromising the professional standards of either program.

Successful completion of the dual-degree programs results in two degrees: a Master's in Public Administration (MPA) and a Master of Science in Student Affairs Administration.

The MPA-MSAA Dual Degree Program

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Science in Student Affairs Administration (MSAA) programs both are housed within the College of Community and Public Affairs and are considered professional terminal degrees. By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MSAA dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 45-credit hour MS in Student Affairs Administration program can be completed as part of a 66-credit hour program (rather than 87 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MSAA dual degree will prepare students for administrative positions in college and university settings. The MSAA program provides specialized training for students desiring to work in student affairs offices, while the MPA provides the knowledge and skills necessary for management. This requires the study of organizational and student development theory as well as gaining hands-on experience in at least one student services office. - Personal statement (2-3 pages) describing your reasons for pursuing graduate study, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee.

- Official GRE scores. GMAT scores can be submitted in lieu of GRE scores.

MPA:
- Two letters of recommendation
Letters of recommendation should be from individuals who know the applicant in a professional capacity, such as professors, work supervisors, and professionals from organizations where the applicant has served as a volunteer or in another capacity. When evaluating the letters of recommendation, the admissions committee looks for evidence of academic achievement, community involvement, and personal characteristics that suggests the applicant has the capacity to foster an institutional culture that advances democratic administration and governance.

- Personal statement
The personal statement should be no more than 500 words or two (2) double-spaced, typed pages and should answer the question,"Why do I want an MPA?" You may wish to describe your reasons for pursuing graduate studies in public administration, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee. In the personal statement, the committee assesses the student's commitment to public and/or nonprofit administration as well as his/her ability to communicate in writing.

- Significant work experience (5 or more years in the public and/or nonprofit sectors) can earn applicants a positive adjustment to their admissions scores. However, the lack of work experience does not result in a penalty.

MS:
- Personal statements should specifically address the applicant's interest in the program, career goals, and current skills and experiences relative to their current or intended career in student affairs

- Three letters of recommendation, which should come from instructors or professors who can attest to the applicant's academic ability for graduate study
Applicants who have been out of college for at least three (3) years may submit current letters of reference from employment supervisors or others affiliated with their employment who can attest to their ability to perform successfully and professionally and to the likelihood of success in a graduate program

The increasing burden of chronic illness is one of the greatest challenges facing health systems globally. In the UK, approximately 18 million people live with a long term or chronic condition and this number is expected to double by 2030. Approximately 80% of GP consultations, 60% of days spent in hospital and two thirds of all emergency hospital admissions are associated with chronic conditions (Department of Health 2004).

Managing long term and chronic conditions currently accounts for almost 70% of the NHS budget and these costs are projected to increase significantly given the ageing population and escalating risk factors such as obesity and inactivity.

Long term and chronic conditions can have profound and far reaching implications on all aspects of peoples’ lives and can present patients (and families) with a spectrum of needs.

People living with a long term or chronic condition require support, care and rehabilitation from a wide range of professionals in health, social and voluntary care sectors. In addition, effective health promotion, prevention, self-care and self-management will help ensure that chronic illnesses are avoided wherever possible and that people are more informed to safely and effectively manage their health and wellbeing.

This requires complex responses over extended periods of time, coordinated, proactive and collaborative input from the health, social care and voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay personnel (as in the Expert Patient Programme). The MSc Long Term and Chronic Conditions is designed to be both multi-disciplinary and inter-professional and thereby mirror long term and chronic condition management within the National Health Service (NHS) and government initiatives.

This course is structured as either a one year full-time or three year part-time modular taught Master's degree. The core structure is based around a holistic approach to long term and chronic conditions management, coupled with research.

The Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management programme offer students the flexibility to choose a “bespoke” path that enables them to develop personally and professionally relevant qualifications with a range of optional modules on offer.

Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students can ‘drill down’ within their specialist area, for example, health promotion, leadership or cancer rehabilitation.

Career Prospects

Current and previous Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management students have roles as nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists, Occupational Therapists, chiropractors, physicians and health science graduates.

Many have secured new roles in healthcare whilst studying or on completion of the programme, and others have or are considering progressing to doctoral level studies or further professional qualifications.

The programme is delivered in three ways to fit with your personal requirements. Full time normally involves three days plus one evening of study. Part time involves a part day (2.00pm start) plus an evening (7.30pm finish). Year one classes for part time are on Mondays and year two classes on a Thursday. Evening only study is from 5.30 to 7.30 on both Monday and Thursday evenings. The taught element of the programme is completed within one year full time and two years part time.

If you already have the CIPD’s Advanced Standards qualification and would like to gain a Masters degree, you can top up to Masters level. You will study the Research Methods for HR professionals module either one afternoon or evening each week from September to December and join the Dissertation workshop sessions on completion of your Research Proposal.

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) program seeks to prepare graduate engineers to face 21st-century challenges by advancing student understanding of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human injury, disease and the health complications associated with aging as they work to improve human health through advances in healthcare and medicine.

The master's degree program prepares students for careers in the biotechnology industry and medical/healthcare centers or providers of medical/healthcare technology.

Doctoral students will also develop a detailed understanding of the operation of the health care industry, preparing them for academic or industry careers related to medical technology, as well as the background necessary to pursue an entrepreneurial role in medical/healthcare technology. To assist students in pursuing new ventures, incubator space and technology transfer mechanisms are available.

In 2014, the first two doctoral graduates of this program went on to postdoctoral work at Pennsylvania State University, and a permanent position at American Systems in Washington D.C.

Educational Objectives

The goal of biomedical engineers is to improve human health through advances in healthcare and medicine. This includes advancing our understanding of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human injury, disease and the health complications associated with physiologic and sociologic factors such as aging, environment and diet. In this regard, we are living in an exciting time. In the last two decades or so we have witnessed, among numerous achievements, the decoding of the entire human genome, the birth of proteomic methods, the maturation of computerized tomography, dramatic advances in imaging and sensing technologies, the culture of stem cells, and advances in biomaterials that may eventually enable us to engineer tissues and even organs. Altogether, these achievements have dramatically augmented our potential for improving health care. However, addressing how to use these basic science research advances for improved health care represents a major challenge for biomedical engineers of the coming generation.
Chronic illness is now a dominant issue in health care, consuming vast sums of healthcare dollars, personnel and facilities usage. This situation will only be exacerbated over the coming decades with the aging of the population. As a result, improvements in our ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat chronic illness, and to do so at reasonable cost, has become a focus of the national healthcare agenda. Accordingly, the goal of the biomedical engineering program at Binghamton University is to prepare graduate engineers to face not only these new 21st century challenges, but also to advance new technologies for better healthcare.

Course aims:

- To offer an up-to-date high-quality course which introduces senior persons working within the field of criminal justice as well as others with relevant experience and interests (e.g. senior personnel working with public sector organisations concerned with penology related operations) to some of the most important theory and research in applied criminology, penology and management.
- To develop the skills necessary to locate, read, interpret and analyse relevant research and other source materials.
- To develop the conceptual understanding necessary to evaluate research methods and findings.
- To facilitate course members in communicating the results of their ideas, research and its conclusions in a written form, as well as orally.
- To enhance the capacity of course members to apply up-to-date research in applied criminology, penology and management to aspects of their work.

Format

The programme is a part-time course that takes place over two years starting in the spring. There are normally three two-week residential teaching blocks in the first year: Block A (March/April), Block B (June/July) and Block C (September).

The residential teaching blocks incorporate key modules:

- Management in Criminal Justice
- Prisons and Imprisonment
- Criminological Theory and Criminological Research
- Criminal Justice and Community Justice
- Sentencing, the Legal Context and Court Issues

The modules cover a range of topics and use a range of delivery styles including seminars, lectures, symposia, practical exercises and project work. Reading lists are provided for each session, giving required and suggested further reading.

- Lectures, seminars and classes: 47 hours per term (first year)
- Small group teaching: 3 hours per term
- Supervision: 3 hours per week during residential blocks (both years)
- Practical sessions: as required - optional research methods surgeries and workshops for attendance depending on research methods being used.

Supervision and learning support

Students are allocated a Personal Supervisor with whom they can discuss any aspect of the course (essay choice, thesis topic, time management, sources of information, academic development and support) on a one-to-one basis.

Independent study time is incorporated into the teaching blocks. Students have access to college library facilities as well as the Radzinowicz (Institute of Criminology), Squire (Faculty of Law), Cambridge Judge Business School and University Libraries.

In the second year, supervision may pass to another member of staff who is better suited to supervise the thesis topic and in some cases a separate subject specific thesis advisor may also be allocated to work alongside the supervisor. Student support materials are also available via a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

- Dissertation: 18,000 words maximum (including footnotes and appendices but excluding bibliography). The dissertation requires a literature review.

There is an increasing need for specialists within agriculture who have an understanding of both the business and technical aspects of the industry. This postgraduate course is aimed at people who are interested in pursuing a career within the land based industries in a professional capacity. This could include consultants, agronomists, animal nutritionists, farm managers/ owners and those working for government departments on technical and regulatory issues.

There is currently a high demand for well trained and suitably qualified personnel within the agricultural industry, and a need for specialists who not only have an understanding of their sector, but have the skills to interact professionally with their clients. A core group of modules will focus on topics such as professional leadership and management, food and agricultural policy, business planning, project management. In order to develop the student’s own area of expertise there are a number of elective modules in business, crop or livestock production. Many positions require professional qualifications so there is the potential within the course to study FACTS, BASIS or AMTRA (additional fee and assessment will be required for these qualifications). In addition, the Institute of Agricultural Management (IAgrM) considers this course as suitable evidence of CPD for those wishing to pursue ‘Professional Agriculturalist’ status.

This module will develop key skills required for professional practice in Agriculture eg. communication skills, facilitating meetings, networking, customer relations, presentation skills and dealing with the media. Food and Agricultural Policy
This module will develop an understanding of the local, national and international policies that impact on the whole food chain from agricultural production, through business development to the consumer.

Business Planning and Decision Making
Business planning, analysis and decision making are essential components of successful rural business management. The applied nature of this course allows students to choose a business with which they are familiar thus making the experience relevant to their own work environment. This module will assist in the process of formulating a business plan to a professional standard, suitable for submission to a potential lender. The process of planning and control, and assessing the financial consequences of that plan will also be covered in the module.

Project Management for Agricultural Professionals
A key role of any agricultural consultancy is management of projects for clients. Underpinning this work is the role of project management. Firstly, this module will consider how to plan a project, manage resources and monitor progress. Secondly, this module will consider how to design an investigation and then analyse and interpret data from this work. The assignments will apply this information in work related projects.

Topical Issues in Modern Agriculture
The purpose of this module is to allow students to integrate the knowledge they possess and, by constructing a reasoned argument, develop broader understanding of their professional area and its relevance to related industries and the wider society. It is designed to develop the critical analysis and evaluation skills of students whilst dealing with complex issues and making informed judgements. The module will typically consist of a series of structured online debates on selected topics of contemporary relevance. Students will engage in constructive discussion of the topics giving critical analyses of the issues. Students will also research an issue that is relevant to their profession and then present it to the class, for peer review.

A further three modules are chosen from a range of options, including:

The programme is studied by part-time distance learning, with learning material presented using SRUC’s online learning environment which allows students to undertake the course from their own home or workplace.

The course is supported by regular weekend schools where participants attend SRUC Aberdeen for seminars, practical sessions and farm visits which provide a valuable part of the learning experience through group discussions and presentations.

The PgDip is a high level learning course taught at university post-graduate level. Students are required to complete all taught modules detailed above. Typically a student will study four modules per year and complete the PgDip in two years. This would normally take an average of 12 to 15 hours study time a week during ‘term’ time.

Students wishing to complete the MSc, and who reach progression standard, will then go on to complete a research project following successful completion of all the taught modules.

Study weekends are an integral part of teaching and learning through interaction with peers, industry subject specialists and teaching staff. Students are strongly recommended to attend the two study weekends in September and February if they are to succeed in this course.
