Throughout this course, you will study the theory and practice of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as the emerging industry standard approach to the design, analysis and management of building life cycle. This course incorporates an innovative blend of design management, sustainable design analysis and advanced modelling, customisation and visualisation, at the cutting edge of technology. You’ll research novel approaches and technologies for an efficient design integration and project collaboration, understanding BIM impact on the design process and workflow requirements.

In February 2015 the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills unveiled Digital Built Britain, the government’s strategic plan for Level 3 BIM. This new programme is of direct relevance to anyone guided by the vision of greater efficiency and profitability.

During your study you will be exposed to and get involved in cutting edge BIM enabled integrated design and construction via research projects and consultancy conducted by your lecturers, such as Dr Boris Ceranic’s projects, SmartPoD, Hierons
Wood and Retro-Tek. The University of Derby has been granted Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists CIAT Centre of Excellence status, one of only four in the country.

for participants to acquire the skills needed to play a leading role in intellectual property rights (IPR) practice and teaching through exposure to an international and comparative approach.
The curriculum aims to provide an in-depth examination of the classical topics of IP law, as well as specialized analysis of the latest developments in the fields of patents, industrial design, integrated circuits, trademarks, domain names, copyright and related rights, biotechnological patents and plant varieties as well as the internet, software, databases and e-commerce.

The LL.M. is structured in three different phases stretching over 9 months, from June 2013 to February 2014.

The first phase - Distant learning

This initial stage provides the participants with a preliminary and homogeneous background. Three distance learning modules are offered from the beginning of June to the end of August. They are based on the successfully tested WIPO Academy “General Course on Intellectual Property” (DL-101), “IP and Electronic Commerce” (DL-202) and “Copyright and Related Rights”
(DL-203). The DL-101 has an online examination while the advanced courses will require of a written exam.

The second phase - residential part

It offers face-to-face classroom teaching, held at the International Training Centre of the ILO, in Torino from September to December.
Building on an introductory review of economic analysis of law, this phase analyzes IP protection both at a national and international level. Lectures will be offered by professors and tutors as well as IP experts. Participants will be required to make seminar-presentations. This provides for active interaction and participation among the students, tutors and the professors. Class teaching will be complemented by case-study sessions, experiments in legal drafting and submission of a first draft of a research paper. Three intermediate exams will be held during this phase of the program. The exam at the beginning of the second phase is intended to assess the level of knowledge attained by students during the first phase.

The third phase - submission of the thesis

This section stretches from December to February. Each participant will be required to submit the final version of the research paper initially presented during the second phase. Submission and grading of the final research will conclude the program.

A Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Intellectual Property will be awarded upon successful completion and fulfilment of the requirements of the program.
Study visits to IP offices in Torino and to other institutions, such as WIPO in Geneva (5 days) will be organized during the residentialphase of the Program. A number of participants, selected by the Scientific Committee of the Master's Program, will take part in an internship program at WIPO and in/or other public and private organizations, such as law firms and corporations active in the field of IP.

The recently-established Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) has launched this unique collaborative Masters in Industrial Biotechnology (IB). IBioIC has committed to creating the next generation of IB-skilled practitioners and the Masters programme is pivotal to delivering this aim.

The course will equip graduates with key skills which will enable them to pursue

Why study Advanced Social Work Studies at Dundee?

Additionally students will have the opportunity to select one optional module from the MSc Social Work, MSc Community learning and Development or MSc Leadership and Innovation courses which will provide interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.


Semester 2

Research project (60 credits) relevant to Social Work which will be supported by a dissertation supervisor and ongoing collaboration with peers. This module will run the full length of the semester and the full dissertation will be completed during the summer.

Inter‐Professional Collaboration and Organisational change (30 credits) - joint module with Community Learning and Development and Leadership and Innovation students.

Collaboration, Integration, and Top Level Research

As a student Water Technology you will be in the center of the multidisciplinary laboratory of Wetsus, in which 80% of the research will be carried out. Wetsus is situated in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. By inviting all the researchers to one location, maximal cooperation and creativity is generated. The researchers are seconded by the participating EU-universities at Wetsus, but the universities carry scientific responsibility of the projects.

In this way, an enormous intellectual and creative power will be focused on water technology and at the same time knowledge capacity will be build up by all the participating universities.

The Netherlands is Europe's leading country in water process technology. The Dutch government focuses in her innovation policy on water and has appointed Leeuwarden as the focal point for water technology development. This results in a supportive government policy in the form of enabling subsidies for water research and innovation. Around the Wetsus research and education facilities, a high-tech water campus is realised to concentrate know how, entrepreneurship, talent and venture capital. This attracts starting companies as well as research centers of large companies.

Wetsus is part of the Dutch Innovation Program on Water Technology. The innovation program aims for the development of sustainable water treatment technology with a strong focus on export. Wetsus, operating as as Technological Top Institute, takes care of the pre-competitive technology development within this program. Wetsus focuses on the research and development of entirely new concepts and on breakthrough improvements of existing technology.

In both cases, an entirely new approach has been chosen whereby the basic principle is always the integration of various knowledge disciplines. The Master of Arts program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the Thesis.

Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or Faculties.

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory Thesis. The Thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a Thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.A. program, the Thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a Thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Consequently, it is necessary for a candidate to establish contact with potential supervisors prior to application for admission. The MSc in Big Data and High Performance Computing provides students with an in-depth understanding of big data analysis and processing using high performance computing technology. Run in conjuction with the STFC Hartree Centre, this MSc programme enables students to gain a specialist qualification in an area of computing that is in great demand worldwide.

Big data is commonly described as data that is so large that it cannot be readily processed using standard techniques. Our current global ability to collect data is such that “big data” sets are becoming common-place.

The most obvious example of this is the exponential growth of the World Wide Web; however there are many public and private enterprises where the analysis of large-scale data sets is critical to growth. Although significant computer power exists, the necessary skills-base is lagging behind the technology.

There is an employment gap looming in the field of big data, especially in the context of the skills required with respect to the application of High Performance Computing (HPC) capabilities to address big data problems.

The MSc in Big Data and High Performance Computing is designed to address this anticipated skills gap and provide those completing the programme with the necessary abilities (abilities which will be highly desirable within the employment market) to address big data centric problems in the context of HPC.

The programme has been designed and operates in close collaboration with the Hartree High Performance Computing Centre and focuses on the practical application of Big Data and HPC technology.

The Hartree centre is underpinned by £37.5 million of Government investment and hosts the UK’s premier supercomputing environment. This partnership provides a unique and unrivalled MSc programme and ensures that students completing the programme have a ready route into employment, facilitated by commercial contacts provided as part of the individual project.

State of the art teaching and research

MSc Students who pursue their postgraduate study within the Department of Computer Science at the University of Liverpool will be an integral part of a department that is internationally renowned for its advanced research and teaching. The Department came seventh nationally in the 2008 research assessment exercise.

Teaching

You will be taught by lecturers who are internationally known for their research. The MSc in Big Data and High Performance Computing is offered full-time on-campus.

The taught components of the programme offer a choice of contemporary computing topics, a strong theoretical basis and the opportunity to gain sound practical and critical analysis skills. The programme can be taken in the form of a single year (12 months) of study with the individual project being undertaken over the summer months, or alternatively the project can be undertaken in the following academic year.

The computing resources include an extensive integrated network of workstations running the Linux operating system and the X-Windows graphical interface, together with a large number of PCs running Microsoft Windows. Staff and students have easy access to high quality laser printing facilities and a range of specialist software.

Career prospects

The MSc in Big Data and High Performance Computing (HPC) is specifically designed to fill a "skills gap" in the employment market. More specifically it is designed to provide students with the necessary skills to allow them to apply Big Data and HPC concepts to real problems. The programme has been structured to facilitate the practical application of this "cutting-edge" technology to real-world problems. The intention is that at the end of the programme students will be able to apply the knowledge gained on the programme specifically to real-world big data and HPC problems. However, the programme is also designed to furnish students with a set of transferable skills that are of particular relevance across the IT industry.

The programme has been developed, and is delivered, in close collaboration with the Hartree Centre at Daresbury which operates the UK's largest supercomputer (capable of a thousand trillion calculations per second). Hartree have close links with industry, and provide assistance with respect to the group and final individual projects, the latter conducted in partnership with commercial and/or non-commercial organisations.

This masters program embraces the entire design development process by researching new experiential concepts, redefining architectural solutions and redefining new standards for comfort and efficiency. Today’s design paradigm must be brought into question in order to better interpret new aesthetic and social trends.

The studio projects are organized in collaboration with major car companies, and provide a platform for students to develop and test their ideas. In particular, SPD has signed a long term educational partnership with Volkswagen Group Design involving the participation of designers from the various brands – from Audi to Lamborghini – into teaching activities.

After the initial exploration, students move into design concepts and their refinement up to both physical and digital modeling. It’s a long process that demands a high level of personal commitment and flexibility, organizational and time management skills as well as a strong attitude to teamwork.

Projects are subject to group critiques and critiques with outsider reviewers. Transportation designers thus acquire a constant spur to innovation both in form language and function, allied with the understanding of engineering and production processes.
The course lasts 15 months (from October until December) and is entirely taught in English language.

Founded in Milan in 1954, SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design is the first postgraduate school for design disciplines in Italy. Situated in Milan, the capital of design, Scuola Politecnica di Design pioneered design education thanks to its solid grounding and to its peculiar approach integrating different domains: ergonomics, art, perception studies, semiotics.

Today, SPD is an international laboratory for the exchange of ideas, experience and creativity in order to develop projects. Since its foundation the school has welcomed an extraordinary community of students from various countries and backgrounds.

All courses are taught in a personalized and small learning environment promoting easy contact with the faculty and the staff. Indeed, at SPD every student is followed individually by a faculty formed by designers, professionals from different fields and visiting tutors.

The Food Design Master’s degree program enables students to become design professionals in the food industry, exploring all related sectord. Combining marketing management and communication skills with design innovation, the program’s education model engages with design ssensitivity and methodology for food packaging, tourism, nutrition, agriculture, retail, restaurants, science, objects and experiences.

The program combines a focus on food-related markets with design approach and methodologies. This creates a food designer who is able to:
• Manage the design of processes, methods and spaces where products are processed, distributed and consumed.
• Manage food in terms of its aesthetics, communication and representation.
• Manage the equipment and tools used to prepare and consume food.
• Coordinate the communication activities implemented for the promotion of food products.

The Master’s in Food Design and Innovation program is comprised of lessons, design workshops, and seminars with the leaders of the food and agriculture industry and of the design field: entrepreneurs, managers, journalists, food critics, designers, architects, publishers and chefs.

In addition, students will visit food companies, concept stores, and restaurants, as well as important gastronomic fairs and events. At the end of the course, students will have an internship experience in a company, agency or firm working in the field. This masters is held in collaboration with important companies and firms of the food industry.

The course lasts one year (from February/March) and is entirely taught in English language.

QUALIFICATION

MID University Master's in Interior Design – is the offspring of the collaboration between Poli.design, Consortium of Politecnico of Milan, and SPD - Scuola Politecnica di Design.

The MID Interior Design program is a graduate program which brings together the experience of two major academic institutions in Italy.

Offering 60 credits, the interior design program combines lessons and internships at selected companies. After the successful completion of the program, the 1st level University Master’s diploma of the Politecnico di Milano will be awarded.

The design courses offer an advanced education with a professional orientation. The training pathway is a synthesis of theoretical knowledge, research, project based activities and professional practice. Project experience will explore interior design skills, with a focus on both private and public spaces. Interiors are intended as relational spaces, designed to organize all of our human activities, thus creating engagement on a physical, emotional and social level.

The teaching staff, selected among the Politecnico di Milano and SPD’s faculties, is made up of designers, university researchers and professionals from different sectors.

The MSc in Business Analytics is a new, block taught MSc that will be available both in Paris and in London. The MSc is offered in collaboration with QMUL’s School of Mathematics and is aimed at students who are highly numerate and have a strong interest in developing statistical and business skills required to succeed in the digital economy.

This exciting new programme is ideal for anybody aiming to direct businesses in today’s digital economy. You will learn how to use insights from business analysis to inform strategy, provide direction for leadership and create value.

With the growing use of data in business decision making, individuals who have a strong understanding of the tools and methodologies for business analysis, who are able to analyse data and use the results to inform the direction of their business, will be sought after by employers in all sectors of the economy.

Our program will take you beyond analytics and programming, teaching you how businesses are structured, how they operate and how digital skills are used to enhance business performance. You will gain an awareness of the leadership and organisational challenges associated with large scale change projects driven by the digitisation of businesses and develop important leadership qualities such as communication, negotiation and team work.

You will be exposed to real world cases from different markets and countries and learn from the experiences of current managers working in a wide range of sectors. You will also have the opportunity to work on a consultancy project in collaboration with an industry partner.

The staff involved in the MSc in Business Analytics have strong links and research collaboration with industry partners and IT start-ups in London and Europe. One of the course leaders was formerly Global Head of FX Quantitative Research at Citigroup, the other has extensive experience in research and consulting on entrepreneurship, innovation management and IP strategy.

Students will be given the opportunity to obtain Microsoft Office and SAS certification and will learn how to use tools such as R and SQL.

We are currently seeking accreditation for the course from the Tech Partnership, a private sector body representing digital businesses in the United Kingdom.

Programme aim

New products are being introduced to the market at a constantly increasing pace. Demands and expectations from customers are also increasing, as is competition in the market. The combination of these factors demands an effective product development process. Knowledge of user requirements is needed to increase the probability of a product becoming commercially successful.

The Master’s programme in Industrial Design Engineering is designed to meet these needs from industry for competencies with a holistic perspective on product development and to encompass a humanistic view on design, technology, the interplay between humans and technology and the increasing demands for environmental consideration.

The programme integrates theoretical studies in engineering, human factors and methodology with extensive project courses where the acquired knowledge is applied in practice. The projects are carried out in collaboration with companies outside Chalmers.

Who should apply

To apply for the programme, a combination of knowledge in industrial design and human factors engineering is required in addition to the traditional technological know-how. Design skills are presented in a portfolio.

Why apply

On a Master’s level the combination of technology, industrial design and human factors engineering is a unique combination. This makes the programme suitable for students who are interested in product identity and functionality from a user’s point of view.

As a result of assignments being given in collaboration with various companies, students are given the opportunity to further develop their skills in product design and development by presenting and reporting the results of their work, both orally and in writing in a professional manner for different target groups. During the course of group assignments and project work, students are given the opportunity to develop their collaboration and group work skills.
