This course is aimed at those who are interested in working towards becoming a psychotherapist with Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy as the core theoretical orientation. It is part of a group of psychotherapy and counselling courses which have an established national reputation for excellence.

The MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy at the University is the most comprehensive training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in South Wales. The curriculum is based on the Core Curriculum Reference document (2010) for training in CBT published by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and The Map of CBT Competences (Roth and Pilling, 2007).

On this course we emphasise the importance of the therapeutic relationship in psychotherapy. The use of core counselling skills interwoven with the delivery of specific strategies and techniques we view as critical to the effective delivery of CBT.

The profile of CBT in the UK has grown significantly over the last 10 years. It has the strongest evidence base of all the psychotherapeutic approaches and in the current guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (often referred to as the NICE guidelines) it is the treatment of choice for many presenting psychological problems CBT is also used with children and young people with psychological and behavioural difficulties although this course is focussed on work with adults.

What you will study

Year One:
- Fundamentals of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy: This module provides a critical understanding of the theoretical underpinning of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (CBP) and a working knowledge of the principles and basic competences for effective practice building on the generic competences used in psychotherapeutic work.

- Problem specific Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (1): This module builds on the knowledge and skills gained in the first module Fundamentals of CBP and provides an introduction to the assessment, conceptualisation and treatment of the most common presentations of depression and anxiety.

- Portfolio of Evidence Based Practice (1): This module has two key components: an understanding of research methodologies and principles, and the development of knowledge and competence to work in professional practice.

Year Two:
- Problem specific Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (2): This module builds on Module 1 and 2 and continues to develop the knowledge and skills to work with anxiety disorders. It also addresses the difficulties that can arise with engaging clients in treatment and that impede progress.

- Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy with Complex Problems: This module extends the knowledge and skills base developed in modules 1, 2 and 3 to critically examine CBP approaches to working with more complex presentations of mental health problems and to treat such difficulties by adapting and enhancing problem specific strategies to achieve best outcomes.

- Portfolio of Evidence Based Practice (2): This module builds on the previous practice module in year 1 (Portfolio of Evidence-based Practice 1) and develops further students’ knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to research and in relation to professional practice.

The Postgraduate Diploma in CBP is part of a three year MSc Programme. After successful completion of the Diploma stage which is two years you can choose whether to proceed to the final Masters year.

Learning and teaching methods

Classes include interactive lectures with group discussion, skills workshops, video recording, role play, case discussion seminars, self awareness and self-practice, specialist workshops with outside expert speakers, seminars, research skills exercises.

Attendance:
This course takes 2 years part-time to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy.

You will have classes one day a week during term time. The PG Diploma stage is taught on a Wednesday in Year 1 and on a Thursday in Year 2. Students must also allow time for work in their practice placement, which is likely to be approximately 3-4 hours per week.

There are a few additional teaching days each year outside of these attendance days. In Year 1 for 2014/15, these days are currently planned in addition to the Wednesday teaching and will be confirmed by the end June 2014:

- Thursday and Friday, 25th – 26th September 2014 (a comprehensive introduction to the course and for working in a placement)
- Thursday 28th January 2015
- Thursday 26th February 2015
- Tuesday 19th May 2015

We expect that all our students attend all teaching sessions, and there is a minimum requirement of 80% attendance in order to complete the course successfully.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

While more practice experience will be required to build the hours to achieve BACP accreditation, having successfully completed the formal training hours and assignments, graduates of the course will be ready to look for work in the field of counselling and psychotherapy with CBT as their core approach.

Former students from the course have found positions in many settings within the NHS, Higher or Further Education and in the voluntary sector. It is also possible to undertake further specialised training in order to work with children and young people, or to apply for a research PhD.

Assessment methods

A range of assessments are used at the PG Diploma stage of this course to test your knowledge, skills, self awareness and practice ability. These include essays, case studies, practice portfolios, critiques of research studies, online tests and exams. Practical assessments include in-class skills assessments, recordings of your client work and reports from your practice supervisor. You need to complete 200 hours of supervised practice

Work and Study Placements

You need to complete 200 hours of CBT practice in a suitable placement during the 2 years. Following on from the programme you will need to complete further practice hours to meet the requirements to become a BACP accredited practitioner.

You will need to find your own placement although the staff team will be able to help with this. Any placement needs to be with adults, support the use of CBT and be willing for you to record your therapy sessions. You will be given more information on this at interview. Some placements may be available in the Newport Community Counselling Service, the counselling research clinic at the University of South Wales.

- Supervision
As a counsellor/psychotherapist you need to meet regularly with a practice supervisor.This may be at an additional cost. If your placement does not provide appropriate CBT supervision. You will be given more information on this at interview

The MSc/Postgraduate Diploma is for you if you are a mental health professional looking for additional specialist training, or if you want to train as a counsellor/psychotherapist and have already completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Skills, or equivalent.

What you will study

You will be allocated a personal supervisor to provide expert guidance, advice and support.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Once you’ve completed the Masters, you will have demonstrated that you have an in-depth knowledge of CBT, including specialist knowledge gained by your own research findings. The course was established in 1995 and alumni includes a wide range of professionals who have developed their knowledge and skills in CBT. In 2008 the programme was granted Level 1 and 2 accreditation by the British Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Content

The main focus of this programme is on common mental disorders in adults such as depression, anxiety,eating disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder but also considers CBP in more complex areas such as chronic depression.

Flexibility for career and study

The programme allows students to combine work and study : participants attend teaching in Dundee one day a week from September to May whilst remaining in practice a vital component in allowing them to develop and apply the knowledge and skills gained on the programme.

The programme is taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, clinical demonstrations and peer-learning through group discussion as well as the completion of case studies within the students’ own workplace.

A distinct benefit for students is the teaching of skills through structured role-playing exercises to develop clinical /counselling skills. In addition all students undertake supervised clinical practice with a range of different disorders.

Teaching Faculty

The programme is a collaborative venture between the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside. All staff teaching on the programme are experienced practicing CBP practitioners.The programme also draws on specialist clinical contributors from elsewhere in Scotland.

COURSE SUMMARY

You will gain an insight into how to use CBT creatively and collaboratively with clients and how to assess, formulate, provide interventions and evaluate your work with clients. This course focuses on interventions with clients who have anxiety and depression right through to people with addictions, personality disorder and schizophrenia as well as other complex needs. There are opportunities to study new developments in CBT, family interventions and how CBT is used with people who have physical health issues.

This course runs part-time for half a day per week over three years, or full-time for two half days per week.        

Depending on your level of experience and professional interests you can choose to study a variety of modules.     

TEACHING

Learning is delivered via blended learning methods including seminars and master classes, critical analysis of case studies, relevant literature and research and reflection on practical applications. Use of video/audio, role play and skills assessment are essential to this course in years one and two to ensure competency of the student in practising CBT. The use of Blackboard as a learning resource is also an important element in all of the modules on the course. It is anticipated that a generous part of this work will be focused on enhancing self-awareness and using CBT tools and techniques on the self using self-help texts and interactive activities. It is anticipated that if the students can use some CBT tools on themselves that this increases self-awareness of their own interpersonal issues and also assists in practicing methods on themselves prior to using these with clients.

Emphasis will be on helping participants gain a high level of clinical competence in utilising this approach in hospital-based and community-based health care settings to a level that they will be able to apply for accreditation with appropriate accrediting bodies including the Proposed Registration Board for Psychological Therapists in Ireland. The course offers post-qualification training in the theory and practice of cognitive psychotherapy, as applied in a variety of mental health settings. Competence is developed through a combination of clinical supervision| lectures, workshops and written assignments. Assessment is based on the submission of case studies and theoretical reviews, oral presentations and standardised rating of therapy sessions. Students will complete a research project that is submitted as a dissertation in the Hilary term of the second year.

This course is offered as a specialised post-qualification course that builds on relevant knowledge and skills already possessed by prospective candidates.Suitable candidates for the course will:
- have achieved a recognised third level qualification in a health profession (e.g. psychology, nursing, social work, medicine) and
- hold a postgraduate diploma in a cognitive or behavioural psychotherapy or an equivalent training qualification in a cognitive or behavioural psychotherapy and
- have in addition conducted a further 40 hours of supervised cognitive or behavioural psychotherapy since completion of their diploma course or equivalent qualification.

Non EU applicants will be expected to hold equivalent qualifications The Master of Science curriculum emphasizes a deeper knowledge of cognitive behavioural models, concepts and methods; competence in developing cognitive case formulations; devising and implementing individual treatment programmes for a range of emotional disorders, and evaluating their effects; understanding the links between cognitive therapy and developmental and cognitive psychology; ethical issues in practising psychotherapy. The development of critical appraisal of research in this area and conducting a research project further deepen students' knowledge of the field. Students are supervised treating a minimum of 15 cases. Formal teaching takes place one full day per week (Thursday) during the full academic year. In addition during the first term students will attend a second full day of teaching (Friday) and will be assigned to a part-time clinical placement within a psychotherapy service for a full calendar year (January - December). Assessment is based on evaluation of the student's clinical performance using the Cognitive Therapy Scale-Revised (CTS-R) and four written assignments. Students will submit a research dissertation (circa 15,000 words) at the end of Hilary Term in their second year. Students who satisfy all the requirements of the Master of Science course will be awarded the Master of Science in Cognitive Psychotherapy.

CBT is the model of psychotherapy most tested by research trials for a range of mental and even physical disorders, ranging from depression, anxiety and phobias to eating disorders, schizophrenia and chronic pain. Healthcare professionals are increasingly required to demonstrate a flexible, multidisciplinary approach to make the best use of skills and resources.

The NHS actively promotes provision of evidence-based management. CBT is the evidence-based psychotherapy par excellence. It can be effective as a stand-alone treatment and can also be used in conjunction with other medical or psychological treatments. The model is versatile and creative and its techniques can be used selectively in general medical, psychological and nursing practice, as well as informing whole courses of integrated treatment.

This course will help you refine your CBT skills, empower you to use the model in a range of clinical situations, and focus on the development of a respectful and pro-active relationship with patients. The therapeutic alliance is central to the delivery of CBT and the course will teach you to forge a positive collaborative relationship with patients as a means of improving and maintaining the patient’s mental health.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The teaching and learning methods used will encourage participative and independent learning and you will arrange to see patients one day per week. Assessment methods will include essays, audio recordings of therapy sessions, case studies and supervisor assessments. Class sizes are usually around 30 for the PgCert and 15 for the PgDip. The course is delivered by staff of NHS Lothian and Greater Glasgow.

Teaching hours and attendance

You will attend a 10-day induction block followed by a four day teaching block in the first week of every month. Links with industry/professional bodies On completion, you can apply to be accredited by the BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) in due course.

15 credits: CBT for Anxiety and Depression/ Principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy/ Research Skills in CBT/ Advanced CBT for Anxiety Disorders/ Introduction to Complex Adaptation of CBT 30 credits: Application of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy If studying for the MSc, you will also complete a dissertation of a research project within a chosen specialist area of CBT. The components of the dissertation will include: a research proposal; a literature review; and a paper for publication.

This part-time PgCert/PgDip course is for professionals working in mental health, such as mental health nurses, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers, and is designed to help you towards individual practitioner accreditation with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP).

It aims to provide high quality postgraduate training in Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (CBT), and is accredited by the BABCP at Level 1. You will have to meet some further criteria, in addition to the course, for full practitioner accreditation.

The syllabus is based on the Roth & Pilling competency framework for CBT with anxiety disorders and depression, and the course focuses on CBT with adults, although we also welcome practitioners working with children and older adults.

You must be able to practise CBT in your work and have ongoing supervision from a supervisor or manager in your workplace. You will also need five hours’ supervision from a BABCP accredited practitioner.

What you will study

This programme is delivered in one core module (20 credits-level 7) followed by either two elective CBT modules (both 20 credits-level 7) or one elective Integrative module (40 credits-level 7).

Core Module
- Foundation Counselling Skills and Awareness (Level 6) – The first module builds a critical understanding of counselling theory alongside the development of foundation skills in counselling and a focus on building appropriate self-awareness.

Students then choose whether they want to follow an integrative pathway or a CBT pathway to complete their studies.

Optional modules
- Counselling Skills and Awareness in Practice – for the Integrative pathway (Level 7) – This module develops a more comprehensive range of advanced counselling skills and a systematic understanding of practice contexts. The critical awareness of personal insights are understood in the context of counselling theory. Once more students integrate their developing counselling skills, self-awareness and insights and theory.

- Cognitive Behavioural Skills and Theory/Professional Practice – for the CBT pathway (Level 7) – These two modules prepares students for entering professional practice as a trainee cognitive behavioural psychotherapist. They build on the counselling skills developed in the module Foundation Counselling Skills and Awareness by providing an introduction to the skills and theory of cognitive behavioural approaches to facilitating change, acknowledging the importance of the therapeutic relationship as a platform for interventions. Students also develop develop knowledge of professional practice issues required to practice in the field of counselling and mental health.

Students learn through experiential exercises, skills practice, personal development work and through formal teaching.

Skills assessment, written assessment, portfolio and journal keeping, and on-line assessment (CBT only).

Attendance

The course runs for 24 weeks September to April (depending on Easter). Our teaching day is Tuesday from 9.30am to 4.30pm. There are two workshops (Integrative elective module only) in January which end at 5.30pm and a Placement Event for all students at the end of January from 5pm to 7pm.

We expect all our students to attend all teaching sessions and there is a minimum attendance requirement of 80% in order to complete this course successfully

Employment Prospects

Students who successfully complete this programme will obtain 60 credits and receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Skills. If you wish, you may then choose to apply for either the new MA Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy or the MSc Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy courses, subject to a successful interview.

Please note that in normal circumstances, you will need a first degree to apply to the Masters Programmes. (Progression onto the Diploma without a first degree will be at the discretion of the university taking into account your performance on the Postgraduate Certificate).

Students who have completed earlier courses have gone on to train as counsellors, to teach or continue in their careers recognising their enhanced skills and the development they have achieved.

What you will study

The Postgraduate Diploma focuses on training as an integrative counselling and psychotherapy practitioner. On successful completion, you will be ready to work as a trained Integrative therapist.

Year One:
- Integrative Counselling Skills and Practice: Introduces the core model of the course and provides foundation theory & skills in humanistic/existential and relational psychodynamic counselling practice.

- Applied Integrative Practice: Introduces the foundations theory and skills of Cognitive Behavioural counselling and Mindfulness. Students learn to integrate these approaches in applied practice with client issues.

- Personal Development & Counselling Practice: This module runs throughout the year and places emphasis on personal development group work and skills practice within a sound ethical framework.

Year Two:
- Advanced Integrative Theory & Skills Practice: This module aims to further develop students understanding of core integrative theory taught in the course and how theoretical ideas can be applied to practice. Learning and teaching methods

Classes include interactive theoretical lectures, experiential workshops, personal development groups, role plays, skills groups, digital recording of skills sessions for assessment and presentations. In addition, you will need to be in placement seeing ‘real’ clients for the duration of the course and will have to have completed a minimum of 100 hours counselling practice by the end of the two years.

Attendance:
This course takes 2 years part-time to complete.

The PG Diploma is taught over 30 days each academic year. For the 2014/15 academic year the main teaching day will be on a Wednesday. Year one of the programme starts with a two-day block (Wednesday 24th & Thursday 25th September) and finishes with a two-day block (Wednesday & Thursday) at the end of May. In addition, students will be required to attend a weekend workshop each academic year (in year one, this is residential) and two one-day summer workshops. We expect that students attend all teaching sessions, and there is a minimum requirement of 80% attendance in order to complete the course successfully.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

While more practice experience will be required to build the hours to achieve personal BACP accreditation, having successfully completed the formal training hours and assignments, graduates of the course will be ready to look for work in the field of counselling and psychotherapy.

Former students from the course have enhanced their career profile within their current employment or found new positions in the voluntary sector, in health settings, in Higher or Further Education, in Employment Assistance Programmes (EAPs), in business and in private practice. It is also possible to undertake further specialised training in order to work with children and young people, or to apply for a research PhD.

A range of assessments are used at the PG Diploma stage of this course to test your knowledge, skills, self awareness and practice ability.

Students on the Postgraduate Diploma Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy are encouraged to have therapy to help with their personal and professional development as a counsellor. This programme will broaden the career options of participants by providing accredited training in Counselling for Depression (through BACP), and a thorough grounding in CBT for treatment of anxiety disorders and depression which with additional supervised CBT practice would enable participants to obtain accreditation as a CBT therapist (through BABCP).

Employability
Completing this Postgraduate Diploma equips people to work as counsellors/therapists in NHS funded IAPT services providing both CfD and CBT as well as in other employment contexts.
