Research

The DDM Water and Coastal Management program is closely connected to the research agenda of the Department of Spatial Planning and Environment, more specifically to the agenda of the research group 'Coastal Resilience'.

Coastal Resilience Research Group (CRRG) conducts research on a wide range of water and coastal management, coastal sustainability, governance, wellbeing and regional decline related issues. The starting point of CRRG research is the realization of the high level of complexity and nuance of the problems emerging in vulnerable areas in times of changing climate, population and economic conditions. The ambition of the CRRG is to contribute to strengthening coastal regions and establishing sustainable communities. By doing that CRRG contributes to the university-wide research focus area Sustainable Society and to the Faculty of Spatial Sciences research mission tWIST (Towards well-being, innovation and spatial transformation) .

CRRG research covers a variety of issues: adaptive governance for flood prone areas; resilience of rural communities; governance of protected landscapes; ecosystem- and coastal vulnerability; the role of arts in building community resilience; tourism in vulnerable coastal regions; risk communication and disaster recovery. Specific objectives of the course are to develop:

• a thorough understanding of how coasts "work" and inter-relate with the marine environment;

• the ability to identify, synthesise and analyse the multifarious roles of humans in altering coastal systems and exploiting the marine resource in a sustainable way;

• a detailed knowledge of integrated coastal zone management approaches and a sound appreciation of emerging marine planning and management initiatives.

- Teaching and learning assessment -

To take this course, you will need access to a computer with a fast internet connection. The course uses the Blackboard learning environment and the modules are delivered using online lectures, including practical and tutorial material. Students and staff interact via email, discussion boards, online chat and telephone. You will find that this course is much more flexible than traditional on-campus university courses as you can study using your own computer and the internet, at your own pace, any place and any time (within given timeframes).

Assessment is 100% by course work (no sessional examinations); a mixture of methods including practical reports, problem analysis, projects, literature reviews and essays, class tests, group work and a research project.

Students are able to use the University's extensive online resources of electronic journals, books and databases.

Career options

The students taking this course predominantly fall into two groups; those who are already working in the field and who wish to up-skill and refresh their knowledge; and those who are interested in making a career change. For the former group the progression opportunities focus on promotion within their current workplace or a change of job but within the same discipline. Others who are working within either the coastal environment or the planning environment will see this course as an opportunity to broaden their knowledge base and make themselves more employable by developing a wider range of skills.

There is already evidence from within Government and Local Authority planning departments that personnel from a terrestrial planning background are being required to work within newly created posts in Marine Spatial Planning but in addition to this students will be seeking to enter jobs in the newly developing field of Marine Spatial Planning within governments, policy making bodies, Non-Governmental organizations and charities.

You will be introduced to technical and analytical frameworks and concepts, which will enable you to study these three major themes:

The physical environment
The institutional frameworks that have been developed for coastal and ocean areas
The value of coastal and marine resources

The course is divided into three parts. The first two comprise the taught units of the course covering the key conceptual, institutional and applied bases of the subject. The third focuses on your dissertation.

Here are the units you will study:

Coastal and Marine Resource Management: You will examine the theory, concepts and frameworks of coastal and marine management, and use topical issues as examples of practical application.

Coastal Physical Processes and Shoreline Management: You will study the biophysical behaviour of contemporary coastal systems. You will then investigate how and why coastal risk management is practiced and examine the effects of management upon ‘natural’ systems.

Law of the Sea and Marine Spatial Planning: You will examine the nature of coastal and marine policy and the forces instrumental in creating such a policy. You will also learn about the law affecting the utilisation of marine space and resources and consider the stages, key stakeholders and approaches to marine planning in the UK, Europe and internationally.

Fieldwork and Research Methods: Firstly, you will examine the role and importance of fieldwork in coastal and marine resource management studies and practice. The concepts, issues and practices covered will mean you can undertake a field-based project on the compulsory residential trip. Secondly, you will have an introduction to research design and methods so you can conduct field research in two contexts: 1) the residential field trip and 2) for your dissertation/independent study.

Dissertation: This provides you with an opportunity to independently study a topic of your choice related to coastal and marine resource management.

Programme Assessment

The course provides a balanced structure of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. You will generally be taught in small classes, providing an informal, friendly and supportive atmosphere for your studies.

This multidisciplinary programme is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to take up the exciting job opportunities arising from the recent adoption of marine spatial planning and related developments in marine conservation and the maritime industries.

Marine spatial planning is now developing as a key component of marine management. It aims to deliver a more organised sharing of sea space between demands as diverse as nature conservation, tourism, ports and shipping, renewable energy, fishing, aquaculture and mineral extraction. It seeks to integrate social, economic and environmental uses of the coast and sea.

Marine planning is being taken up by coastal nations around the world, including Australia, China, the United States of America, South Africa and several European nations, such as Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Some nations, such as the UK, now have statutory provisions for planning their coastal and marine waters and bodies and procedures for preparing marine plans and implementing them. All European Union coastal states are now required to introduce marine planning, following a Directive passed in 2014.

So there is a growing demand for professionals who understand marine science and management on the one hand, and spatial planning, as has long been practised on land, on the other. This postgraduate programme bridges the gap between these two disciplines, and equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to embark on a career within marine management.
This programme leads to the award of a Master of Science degree. It is a full-time, one-year course, though it is also possible to study part-time over two years, combining studies with other responsibilities. This is the first programme of its kind to be accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute as a specialist Masters course. Gaining the degree is a step towards professional membership of the Institute.

The study involves the research, planning and design of landscape to create and maintain places to be functional, meaningful, sustainable and beautiful.

Programme summary

Landscapes form our living environment. Natural landscapes are often beautiful in themselves, however most of those we now live in are the result of our complex interaction with the natural world. The new generation of landscape architects and spatial planners understand the challenges we face when shaping and creating the landscapes that form a key component of our living environment. Your goal is to study and design sustainable solutions for important landscape challenges such as climate change, energy needs, health, food security and urbanisation.

Specialisations

The programme offers two specialisations: landscape architecture and spatial planning.

Landscape Architecture
Your primary focus as a Wageningen landscape architect is the design and construction of metropolitan landscapes situated in estuaries and deltas worldwide. Your goal is to create sustainable designs based on a thorough investigation of the ecological, behavioural and aesthetical disciplines.

Spatial Planning
As a spatial planner you develop scenarios for future landscape transformation and evaluate the effectiveness of these scenarios for many different stakeholders. You study planning processes and generate and organise the theoretical and practical knowledge needed for spatial interventions.

Your future career

Once you graduate with an MSc in Landscape Architecture and Planning, you are well-prepared for a career as a landscape architect, spatial planning consultant, project manager, policy adviser and academic or applied researcher. Many of our alumni hold senior positions at consultancy and engineering companies, planning and design bureaus, district water boards, government agencies and universities. A number work for large multinationals, while others have set up their own company or are employed by small and medium sized enterprises.

For their thesis, Jesper and Ruud investigated sustainable tourism development in coastal landscapes. They visited the Dubrovnik Rivièra in Croatia for their case study and explored and developed an integrated design strategy for tourism development. Their designs on a regional and local scale show how site-specific landscape identities can function as a base for future sustainable tourism development. “We visited our study area twice. We explored the area ourselves, participated in workshops, and held interviews with local people. This gave us unique insights in the issues that arise when working in a different culture and landscape.”

The emergence of the Law of the Sea Convention and establishment of Exclusive Economic Zones has given coastal states extensive and comprehensive rights and obligations over marine resources in vast areas of ocean. Wise management of ocean resources is essential if the full economic potential of these new entitlements is to be realised. To ensure the continuing biological productivity of these areas, the level and type of development of activities such as waste dumping, mineral extraction, recreation, industrial and urban growth, fisheries and aquaculture, need to be controlled, and interactions of these often conflicting activities resolved by management.

This MSc is a full-time one-year course, consisting of 9 months taught course and 3 months research project, and examined by continuous assessment. The course provides theoretical and practical training in measuring and quantifying marine resources and the effects of conflicting usage upon them. It provides a sound scientific basis on which to develop policy and make decisions on marine resource exploitation and protection around the world.

Course Aims
To broaden the student's awareness of the economic potential of the ocean, to generate an understanding of the major marine biological resources and the physical processes controlling these resources, to provide theoretical and practical training in measuring and quantifying these resources and the effects of conflicting usage upon them, to enhance those skills necessary to manage effectively the sea area of national jurisdiction, and to produce graduates with appropriate experience for developing policy and making decisions on marine resources and other marine uses for their individual countries or regions. To date, most graduates have taken up employment in the field of marine environmental protection in the UK and abroad.

Coastal and Marine Management http://www.uw.is/coastal/ is an international, interdisciplinary Master's degree in the field of resource management. The programme emphasizes ideas and methods from ecology, sociology, economics and business studies. Students completing the programme have knowledge of the diverse and valuable resources of the coast and the sea, understand their current condition, and have gathered tools and expertise to drive the sustainable use of marine resources. Among the fields which the master's program in Coastal and Marine Management prepares students to work in are resource and land use planning, environmental impact assessment, consulting work, teaching and research. The program is internationally oriented and taught in English, and both students and instructors come from a diverse range of countries. The University Centre of the Westfjords offers this programme in co-operation with the University of Akureyri. Teaching takes place in the town of Ísafjörður in the Westfjords of Iceland.

Programme composition

The CMM programme consists of 120 ECTS at the Master's level, of which 75 ECTS are earned from courses and 45 ECTS come in the form of a thesis. All courses are taught in succession and the terms/semesters are therefore not clearly marked. The programme begins in the autumn term with core courses, and in the spring and summer terms elective courses are on offer.

The application deadline for citizens outside the EU/EEA area is February 15th.The first application deadline for EU/EEA Citizens is April 15th. Course details

Develop a comprehensive knowledge of planning, enabling critical evaluation of evidence from a range of perspectives related to the natural and built environment. As an RTPI combined programme, core modules cover the general foundation of spatial planning (including urban design), and specialisms reflect planning issues relevant to South West England and existing strengths within the University: marine and coastal planning, rural planning and sustainable development. Our programme will enable you to develop a professional career in planning in the public, private or voluntary sector. We offer a supportive learning environment with small-group teaching and extensive interaction with our staff, emphasising the critical skills necessary for professional effectiveness in planning-related careers.

The aim of this course is to provide a grounding in both practical and theoretical aspects of sea level science in the context of climate change.

In the last few years it has become rapidly apparent that coastal flooding as a result of intense storms is forming one of the more immediate consequences of changes in storm severity and frequency consistent with what we would expect in a warming climate. Worldwide, governments, coastal planners and the insurance industry are realising that understanding sea level, both in terms of its gradual change and its response to extreme weather events, is vital if we are to try to reduce or mitigate the high human and financial costs of coastal flooding. This provides the practical, and urgent context for developing high-level training in sea level.

Within Liverpool we are well-placed to develop this training because of the co-location of the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and the School of Environmental Sciences. NOC hosts and provides expertise for the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level, the primary tide gauge data source for all studies of long-term sea level change. Scientists at the NOC are world leaders in the science of sea level, both in the context of global and regional sea level changes in response to a changing climate and in science of forecasting coastal flooding as a result of tide and storm interaction.

Graduates of the Environment and Climate Change MSc have gone on to continue their studies towards a PhD, or are employed in a wide range of positions, including environmental, energy and engineering consultancies, multinational companies (energy), local government, environmental bodies, research positions and teaching.

PhD graduates are now working in academic life as lecturers in Geography, Environmental Science, Economic History, Development Studies and Statistics at universities in the UK and overseas. Others are employed in applied fields, working in Europe, Africa and across the world, for example as professional statisticians (one is now Director of Statistics in Zambia, another working in the Health Service in the UK), development professionals (including a member of staff on the WHO malaria programme in East Africa), and scientists at climate and environmental research centres around the world.

The programme will provide training suitable for those seeking a career in the insurance and re-insurance industries, in coastal management, and in risk assessment/long-term planning for coastally-based organizations and governments. For those seeking to go on to further research in climate change and sea level, it will provide an unparalleled background, addressing many of the high priority requirements recently identified by NERC for doctoral training. Aspects of the course, such as research skills and data analysis of environmental records (including time series analysis) provide skills which are in demand across a wide range of scientific, engineering and financial fields.
