The postgraduate certificate stage is accredited by the EMCC at Senior Practitioner level. We are the only UK university to offer this.

The course is unique in the market in that it examines how a coach or mentor can best work with an individual in the context of their organisational system. We draw on theories and case studies, and examine individual and organisational psychology.

We help you develop your own practice as a coach or mentor. This involves examining our presence and approaches as well as commercial matters such as business development and networking.

The course is delivered by a team of nationally renowned tutors who are specialists in the field.

You have the opportunity to study emerging areas such as team coaching and applied practice.

We also provide one-to-one coaching supervision throughout the programme to help you reflect on your own personal development and gauge the effectiveness and ethics of your work.

Learning and assessment

During the course you examine and critically analyse coaching and mentoring theories and concepts. We adopt coaching as a learning style, which enhances learning and allows us to examine and reflect on different coaching approaches. You benefit from

Professional recognition

The Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring level is primarily focused on developing students' professional practice to meet the professional expectations of the EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) at Senior Practitioner level. Students successfully completing the Postgraduate Certificate will be entitled to a certificate confirming that they have completed a programme of training accredited by the EMCC at Senior Practitioner level.

Course structure

Part-time – typically eight months for the postgraduate certificate and two years for the MSc.

Modules are taught in four day blocks, with approximately eight weeks between each one.

Postgraduate certificate

For the Postgraduate Certificate you complete an induction day and the following four modules. You also complete 90 hours of off-workshop coaching/mentoring practice.

Postgraduate diploma

The dissertation provides an opportunity to undertake in-depth research into a topic of your own choice in the field of coaching and mentoring, supported by your research supervisor. You work at your own pace, meeting with your research supervisor by mutual agreement.

To prepare for this you also attend a half day dissertation workshop.

Teaching and learning

This programme is taught through a series of Friday or Saturday seminars and workshops (approximately one a month). We use a variety of teaching and learning methods designed to enable you to develop active learning techniques, reflect on practice and undertake independent research. You can choose Friday or Saturday as your preferred day of attendance.

Approximately 50% of the programme is delivered online in the Oxford Brookes virtual learning environment through which you can discuss, debate and support each other in your studies. You are encouraged to communicate electronically with your supervisor and tutors (eg by email, Skype, etc).

All teaching, learning and assessment activities draw on the professional backgrounds, experience and knowledge of all participants and encourage critical reflection. Teaching staff have research interests and expertise in coaching and mentoring and related fields. Visiting speakers from business and industry provide further input. You can attend events from the Oxford Brookes Coaching and Mentoring Society (OBCAMS), which meets monthly, and attracts outside speakers and presenters from all areas of coaching and mentoring.

Approach to assessment

All assessment is based on a variety of coursework assignments and a dissertation - there are no exams.

Assessment

A range of assessments are used across the modules. All aim to test your ability to link the theory to current practice, and link in to your personal and professional development needs. You will be challenged to augment your existing expertise and to push the boundaries of your knowledge, in order to operate at the highest level, be confident in providing facilitation and consultancy, and be competent in researching the field.

This part-time programme is delivered by the International Centre for Coaching and Mentoring Studies and is aimed at experienced professionals seeking to extend their knowledge and understanding of coaching and mentoring. It has been designed to develop skills and confidence in providing facilitation and consultancy, as well as competence in research and evaluation. The programme integrates professional expertise and scholarly inquiry, culminating in doctoral research training and the design of original empirical research leading to completion of a doctoral thesis.

The Doctor of Coaching and Mentoring is the only one of its type in the UK. Its key features are:

  • Individual academic support from a team of expert researchers in the field. The programme is designed to meet the needs of adult learners who wish to develop their knowledge of coaching and mentoring, and to develop key practical abilities.

Coaching and mentoring are underpinned by two important philosophies. First, ‘people are experts in their own life and work’ and second, ‘the solution lies within’. In practice this means that coaching and mentoring are processes which enable and facilitate independent thinking, autonomy and self- efficacy.

This programme creates an environment in which participants work collaboratively to share information and insights and to develop knowledge and skills in the tradition of the ‘coaching and mentoring way’.

The course is run on a part-time basis and typically takes about one year to complete.

Course structure

Investing your time, effort and energy in the programme will develop your skills, knowledge and practice to the highest level. This will place you in a strong position to offer employers and clients just what they are looking for.

Our programme will help you:

  • acquire and develop specialist knowledge, understanding and skills in mentoring and coaching
  • achieve personal insight and the development of a reflective learning capability
  • learn about new theories, ideas and concepts about mentoring and coaching
  • learn how to develop practical ways of implementing those theories, ideas and concepts within the workplace, whether as a manager or a consultant

The work-based nature of most assignments means that you can apply your new ideas and thinking to real challenges you are facing in your work.

The focus on practice enables participants to develop their understanding of mentoring and coaching roles and relationships in their professional context, with reference to a range of theoretical models and wider, critical reading. The award provides the opportunity to explore the many ways in which coaching and mentoring approaches are used in the workplace and to consider the functions and purposes of these approaches and the impact on coaches, mentors and their organisations.

Participants will develop relevant skills through workshop sessions, academic reading and discussion, leading to the application and evaluation of new ideas in practice and planning for further professional development.

Participants’ work throughout the award is underpinned by critical reflection, which maintains a clear focus on the immediate workplace context and the coaching and mentoring relationships at the heart of what they do, as well as the wider professional arena in which they work.

This award is part of the Manchester Met Faculty of Education postgraduate Professional Development Programme.

Assessment details

Assessment is by coursework for each unit and a full assignment brief is available for each unit. Assessment tasks always allow you to pursue your own thinking and interests within the parameters of the unit and award. Formative feedback is available and built in for every unit.

For taught units (30 credits) the assessment is 5000 words equivalent. The final (60 credit) dissertation is 12-14,000 words

How you will learn?

The programme reflects Ashridge’s philosophy about the nature of change and learning. You will be learning in an environment of reflection and experimentation, rather than simply relying on didactic input. The learning experience draws on the principles of adult learning and development and is well-grounded in research.
It is delivered through short teaching inputs on coaching theories and models, combined with small and large group discussions. Each module also includes ‘co-coaching’ with fellow participants as well as live supervision. In the second year, the programme delivery becomes a collective and deeper inquiry into the main elements of coaching: the coach, the client, the relationship and the organisation.

The approaches to executive coaching taught in this Master’s degree are inspired by our own expert faculty publications in the field and by the ongoing research that takes place within the Ashridge Centre for Coaching.

About Relational Coaching

The Ashridge approach to coaching involves paying attention to what goes on between the client and coach, and making the relationship explicit. Often this exploration casts new light on the client’s relationship with their organisation.

Relational coaching means understanding that the relationship between coach and client is at the heart of effective coaching and is an essential vehicle for learning and change. A key understanding that informs all our coaching contracts is that each relationship is specific to a particular organisational context.

The client’s agenda will be defined by their organisational context, and so will your relationship with that client, albeit at a more indirect and subtle level.

Clients will inevitably bring their own individual patterns of relating into the coaching arena, replaying their core beliefs and attitudes about themselves and their abilities. The coaching relationship therefore becomes a forum for understanding stale patterns and for experimenting with new ways of being in a relationship.

The theoretical approach is integrative, drawing on a range of sound psychological theories and principles from the fields of coaching, psychological therapies and organisation development. Ashridge coaches work on a relational basis with their clients and are likely to explore on a number of levels. These levels are primarily:

‌•The assumptions clients have about the organisation within which they operate
‌•The relationships that they have with the people within the organisation
‌•What the client personally brings to these relationships.
‌•The relationship between coach and the person being coached is entered into and agreed in an explicit way from the outset. We draw up an initial contract that specifies the boundaries and articulates the intentions and goals for the relationship. However, relationships are dynamic and the contract needs to reflect this. Ashridge believes that change takes place through the process of relating, and this is the whole point of a responsive coaching contract. Therefore, what seemed figural and important at the first meeting may shift to a new way of seeing the situation by the third or fourth meeting.
