Examples include: Reflective essays considering your developing coaching identity; assessed coaching practice; a strategic recommendation for implementing coaching in a case study organisation and a sample audio recording along with a reflective analysis of some your work with clients.

Professional recognition

The Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring level is primarily focused on developing students' professional practice to meet the professional expectations of the EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) at Senior Practitioner level. Students successfully completing the Postgraduate Certificate will be entitled to a certificate confirming that they have completed a programme of training accredited by the EMCC at Senior Practitioner level.

Course structure

Part-time – typically eight months for the postgraduate certificate and two years for the MSc.

Modules are taught in four day blocks, with approximately eight weeks between each one.

Postgraduate certificate

For the Postgraduate Certificate you complete an induction day and the following four modules. You also complete 90 hours of off-workshop coaching/mentoring practice.

  • Coaching and mentoring: leadership and change
  • Coaching and mentoring: supervision

Postgraduate diploma

You complete an induction day and the following three modules:

MSc

The dissertation provides an opportunity to undertake in-depth research into a topic of your own choice in the field of coaching and mentoring, supported by your research supervisor. You work at your own pace, meeting with your research supervisor by mutual agreement.

To prepare for this you also attend a half day dissertation workshop.

It is delivered through short teaching inputs on coaching theories and models, combined with small and large group discussions. Each module also includes ‘co-coaching’ with fellow participants as well as live supervision. About Relational Coaching

The Ashridge approach to coaching involves paying attention to what goes on between the client and coach, and making the relationship explicit. Often this exploration casts new light on the client’s relationship with their organisation.

Relational coaching means understanding that the relationship between coach and client is at the heart of effective coaching and is an essential vehicle for learning and change. A key understanding that informs all our coaching contracts is that each relationship is specific to a particular organisational context.

The client’s agenda will be defined by their organisational context, and so will your relationship with that client, albeit at a more indirect and subtle level.

Clients will inevitably bring their own individual patterns of relating into the coaching arena, replaying their core beliefs and attitudes about themselves and their abilities. The coaching relationship therefore becomes a forum for understanding stale patterns and for experimenting with new ways of being in a relationship.

The theoretical approach is integrative, drawing on a range of sound psychological theories and principles from the fields of coaching, psychological therapies and organisation development. Ashridge coaches work on a relational basis with their clients and are likely to explore on a number of levels. These levels are primarily:

‌•The assumptions clients have about the organisation within which they operate
‌•The relationships that they have with the people within the organisation
‌•What the client personally brings to these relationships.
‌•The relationship between coach and the person being coached is entered into and agreed in an explicit way from the outset. We draw up an initial contract that specifies the boundaries and articulates the intentions and goals for the relationship. However, relationships are dynamic and the contract needs to reflect this. Ashridge believes that change takes place through the process of relating, and this is the whole point of a responsive coaching contract. Therefore, what seemed figural and important at the first meeting may shift to a new way of seeing the situation by the third or fourth meeting.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

- Professional Work Based Development
This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, video analysis, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. You can choose Friday or Saturday as your preferred day of attendance.

Approximately 50% of the programme is delivered online in the Oxford Brookes virtual learning environment through which you can discuss, debate and support each other in your studies. You are encouraged to communicate electronically with your supervisor and tutors (eg by email, Skype, etc).

All teaching, learning and assessment activities draw on the professional backgrounds, experience and knowledge of all participants and encourage critical reflection. Teaching staff have research interests and expertise in coaching and mentoring and related fields. Visiting speakers from business and industry provide further input. Collegiate Hall houses some of the finest sport science laboratories in the UK, whilst our sport campus at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield is home to many of Team GB's top athletes. Our sports research is ranked fourth in the UK and we provide market-leading commercial services to a wide range of organisations and athletes.

The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science boasts one of the largest physical activity and sport-related portfolios of research expertise in the UK. It focuses on physical activity, wellbeing and performance enhancement. The centre worked closely with GB Volleyball and GB Table Tennis as they prepared for London 2012.

The course is led by Michelle Vernon-Way, an expert in sport coaching with over 20 years industry experience of bespoke development for NGB coaches.

Professional recognition

Sheffield Hallam University is accredited by the UK Coaching Standards Group to work with National Governing Bodies of Sport to deliver a UKCC Level 4 coaching programme.

Course structure

The course comprises of four learning strands which have been identified as fundamental to the development of advanced sport coaching practice. Modules are designed within these overarching strands, which are developed throughout your studies.

This course has been developed in conjunction with a number of leading sports organisations to meet their requirements of a practicing UKCC Level 4 master coach. The Postgraduate Elite Coaching Practice programme is an exciting collaboration between UCLan and Pentagon Sport (the Rugby Football League, English Hockey Board, English Table Tennis Association, English Basketball Association). This successful partnership has seen this postgraduate diploma course recognised as the first endorsed level 4 UK Coaching Certificate. If you hold responsibility or interest in developing and improving your team’s performance, as either a coach or manager, the Elite Coaching Practice course is for you. There are two possible pathways that you can choose. The first is elite performance, and focuses on the development of the very best performers and maximising their potential in competition. The PGDip Elite Coaching Practice is a dynamic course that aims to develop your critical understanding of the theories and practice of Sports Coaching. The UK Coaching Framework is well underway and the predominant aim of this strategy is to become the number one coaching system in the World by 2016. One feature of the implementation plan is the development of the UK Coaching Certificate. In order to achieve the high standards expected of such a system, it will require highly skilled and knowledgeable individuals to develop it over the next 5-6 years. Consequently the main emphasis of this programme is placed on developing a range of intellectual, professional, managerial and transferable attributes that are essential for the modern sports coach.

The underpinning philosophy of the PGDip Elite Coaching Practice is to create an education which is intellectually and academically challenging but is also clearly focused on the vocational needs of the sports coaching industry, generating practitioners who can challenge and develop existing systems and processes. It aims to challenge current practice and provide a platform to experiment and innovate. The PGDip Elite Coaching Practice programme has been designed to provide a high quality educational experience for existing UKCC level 3 coaches within the sports sector. Emphasis throughout the programme is therefore placed on developing your critical reflective and analytical skills from both a theoretical and applied perspective.

This course has been designed to thoroughly prepare you for a diverse range of career opportunities, from leading international expeditions, coaching and performance enhancement to sports management, public services and a wide range of roles within the outdoor leadership industry. Students and graduates have gone on to work in New Zealand, the Himalayas, USA and India, while others have opted to continue their studies at postgraduate and master’s level.

You will have a wealth of opportunities to work both at home and overseas during your time at UCLan. Each autumn, major employers such as PGL, Acorn, Camp America and CCUSA recruit directly from the cohort offering students the opportunity to have summer experience guaranteed by late February. CCUSA offer students the chance to sign up for skill specific placements with incremental responsibilities and the opportunity to apply for internships upon graduation.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Please note that all modules will be assessed. You are expected to attempt all required assessments for each module for which you are registered, and to do so at the times scheduled unless authorised extensions, special arrangements for disability, or extenuating circumstances allow you to defer your assessment. The timing of submission for the assessments undertaken as part of this award will be agreed through mutual negotiation between you and your director of studies. Once this has been agreed, you are urged to manage your time effectively so that you are able to meet the deadlines.

The MA Sports Coaching degree is the new programme developed to support the strategic objectives outlined in the UK Coaching Framework. Sports Coach UK have provided the strategy for the UK to be considered the number one coaching system in the World by 2016. Our challenge is to support this and produce postgraduates with a high degree of knowledge and understanding so that they can challenge and innovate their own coaching practice. This will require knowledge of leadership, communication, pedagogy, allied sport sciences and relevant management principles. Students will be afforded the opportunity to work in an environment relevant to their developmental needs.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course.

This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. For example, we have had guest lectures given by representatives of Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, Blackburn Rovers Football Club, Lancashire Football Association, The Rugby Football League and Preston City Council.

The MA Sports coaching also benefits from a number of unique opportunities within the school. Within the school there are strong links with The Institute of Coaching and Performance (ICaP) which is Chaired and Directed by David Collins. The school is also responsible the delivery for the PGDip in Elite Coaching (UKCC Level 4 Coach Education: Pentium Group). As both ICAP and PGDip are central to the school there are a number of opportunities to share current research and practice from within the elite coaching environment.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

All face-to-face delivery will use several types of media to encourage learning. The main vehicles will be through seminars, debates, practical workshops and problem-based learning. This will be supported with some electronic learning activities and resources. Those who choose the blended mode of delivery will be taught through a combination of interactive electronic learning activities and face-to-face delivery on residential blocks (for example weekends).

The use of guest speakers on the course is designed to facilitate networking opportunities for students to meet with potential employers.

Every effort will be made to apply theory to practice, and in some cases, practice to theory. There will be a requirement for independent learning throughout the programme, culminating in the Dissertation.

There are no examinations on this course. Every effort has been made to ensure that assessments are relevant to the coaching sector. For example, coach reports, case study reports, debates, critical reflections and presentations are used throughout the programme.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The full-time MA in Sports Coaching course is a 12 month programme comprising three parts. The first two parts are the taught element and the final part is the research element. The taught element focuses on key aspects of sports coaching. In addition, students will have the opportunity to engage in consultancy or sport-specific placement. For full-time students, the taught element is normally completed over a nine month period starting in October. Part-time students will normally attend on a one day per week basis and complete the taught element in two years. Students who complete the taught element of the programme, in part or in its entirety, may graduate with either a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Sports Coaching.

Students wishing to complete the MA in Sports Coaching must complete the research element. The research element comprises a dissertation. Full-time students will normally complete this in the three months that follow the taught element, whilst part-time students complete this during the course of an academic session.

An integral part of the course is the Consultancy Project, which is an opportunity for students to work on a “live” sports coaching / coaching science project for an external client, agreed using a project specification negotiated between the student, client and academic supervisor.
