This course represents a close working partnership between British Judo, Sports Coach UK and Sheffield Hallam. The content, curriculum design, delivery and assessment methods have been developed collaboratively to ensure it meets the needs of coaches working at this level.
The course has been designed to help coaches to evidence how their developing sport coaching practice meets the expected competencies of the UKCC Level 4 master coach, working within performance coaching. The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science boasts one of the largest physical activity and sport-related portfolios of research expertise in the UK. It focuses on physical activity, wellbeing and performance enhancement. The centre worked closely with GB Volleyball and GB Table Tennis as they prepared for London 2012.
The course is led by Michelle Vernon-Way, an expert in sport coaching with over 20 years industry experience of bespoke development for NGB coaches.
Sheffield Hallam University is accredited by the UK Coaching Standards Group to work with National Governing Bodies of Sport to deliver a UKCC Level 4 coaching programme.
The course comprises of four learning strands which have been identified as fundamental to the development of advanced sport coaching practice. Modules are designed within these overarching strands, which are developed throughout your studies.

This course has been developed in conjunction with a number of leading sports organisations to meet their requirements of a practicing UKCC Level 4 master coach. The sport coaching industry is driven by the UK Coaching Framework and this course provides the ideal springboard to gain employment in this dynamic area.
Graduates from this course are current national and Olympic coaches or high performing coaches working in a variety of coaching contexts.
Possible progression or career routes include • high performance coach • national coach • national governing body (NGB) performance director • national governing body (NGB) director of coaching or coach education • coach mentor • academic teaching or research careers in the UK or internationally • further study for example professional doctorate or a PhD.
The main aim of the course is to produce graduates who are equipped with the key knowledge and skills to develop coaching within Northern Ireland to assist with lifelong participation in sport or physical activity, excellence and leadership. This will be achieved by accruing and disseminating a body of knowledge from key experts involved in coach development both directly and in partnership with governing bodies in sport, utilising innovative and appropriate communication to benefit all learners. This would be a cutting-edge programme that will support those involved in coaching and link with the needs of the industry.
The aim of this course is to facilitate the continuing development of sports coaching professionals and to enhance their knowledge and skills appropriate to the management and control of the diverse components within the field of sports coaching, commensurate with the requirements of the profession, their employers, associated professional bodies and community, commercial and industrial interests. The MSc is offered in both full- and part-time modes. Students will complete 180 credit points for the award of MSc, with the option to exit after completing 120 credits for the award of Postgraduate Diploma. Full-Time students will take 60 credits in each of the three semesters, while the part-time students will take 30 credits in each semester of years one and two and 60 credits in year three. There are six taught modules on the course, all of which are compulsory. Three of the programme modules are 30 credits points whilst the Research Project Preparation and Professional Development are 15 credit point modules and the dissertation is 60 credits (the dissertation is not necessary for those who choose to exit with the PgDip). Students wishing to graduate with a PGCert will study 60 credits which is offered in semester 1 of the programme. All modules are compulsory, with students being offered the opportunity to choose what aspect of coaching and specific sport they will write about for their assessments. The Dissertation module also provides students with a choice of topic.
This programme will be delivered in FT and PT mode. The means of delivering will be in blocks throughout each semester of study.
There are a range of approaches that will be utilised in this programme with regards to work based learning from minimal workplace guidance in some modules to full mentoring support in the Advanced Coaching Process module which entails the academic mentor viewing the student in their coaching environment. The value of this model of work-based learning is that it enables students to receive observational assessment in the workplace. All assessments will be reflective in nature which will ensure the engagement of work based practice.
The climate for developing sport and coaching in Northern Ireland and the UK has never been more positive. With major international events being hosted here, coach education and development have become a major focus for policy and funding decisions by Governmental Departments. The establishment of the UKCC across four levels and different coaching contexts being developed, this has provided an opportunity to modernise existing coach qualification and learning programmes.

The expectation of what makes an expert coach is growing and there is a need therefore for coaches of elite athletes or teams (at all levels) to become more highly qualified which will be achieved by continuing in education at postgraduate level.
The main aim of the programme is to provide a basis for career development into - or through - the sports coaching profession.
The course is designed to help you build on your existing experience to refine your coaching. You will develop a deeper appreciation of theory and research related to sports coaching and will consider how best to apply this in practice. You will study in a collaborative environment where you will learn from other coaches and from teaching staff with excellent professional experience in their respective fields. You will consider a range of contemporary issues and practices, using modern methods and approaches in areas such as developing expertise, reflective practice and mentoring, sport psychology and talent identification.
An emphasis is placed on the application of theory in a practical setting, and students are supported to develop reflective, analytical and critical thinking skills.
Assessments - including written assignments, research projects, presentations and reflective writing - are designed to allow students to relate theory to their own practice and the context in which they coach. Students will be encouraged to engage in research within their own context to promote higher levels of evidence-based practice.
Students on this course join the wider professional community, connecting with UK Coaching and UKCC level 4 coaches, sharing discussions, speakers and networking opportunities.

There is a range of employment markets for graduates, including professional sports clubs, commercial and social enterprises, community sports programmes, schools, disability sports clubs, county sports partnerships and national governing bodies (NGBs). Research Methods and Skills in Sport Coaching
The module will examine different research traditions and provide students with an opportunity to critique existing empirical material. Students will explore key theoretical issues such as interview techniques; designing of quantitative questionnaires; data analysis (both quantitative and qualitative) and the development and completion of ethics forms. Students will also examine the process of data collection; management; interpretation; analysis and presentation through the use of case studies.
Advanced Coaching Theory
In this module students will examine the principles of the reflective practice in coaching and how reflection can take on different forms. Students will be required to reflect upon their own coaching practice and this process will be used to critique the role of pedagogy in coaching practice. The module will introduce students to the holistic nature of coaching. Students will also explore the notion of expertise in coaching and how expertise in developed in both coaching and other domains.
This module introduces students to the concept of player and participant development from a multi-disciplinary standpoint (a bio-psycho-social approach). It analyses and evaluates the role of sports science within coaching and will critique existing models of player development. Students will be expected to critique the current theory and consider their own personal practice in this regard.
Students will engage with the multi-disciplinary nature of coaching and performance and will use player to data to produce an applied development strategy using case studies designed to develop an understanding of the difficulties involved in player development.

Information for PGA Professionals
The PGA, on behalf of the sport of golf, leads on the development of coach education and training. A full review of the existing coach education structure, following guidance from the quality standards of the UK Coaching Certificate, has lead to the establishment of a new, coach-centred education system that meets the needs of coaches and, ultimately, players.
This exciting and innovative pathway begins with the Level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications; progresses through the Foundation Degree in Professional Golf or the Applied Golf Management Studies Degree towards the PGA Level 3 qualification (incorporating the Advanced Certificate in Golf Coaching); leading through the Post Graduate Diploma in Coaching to the Level 4 qualification; with the potential to culminate in a full Masters Degree in coaching following completion of a relevant thesis.
The Advanced Certificate in Golf Coaching provides the under-pinning knowledge for the new Level 3 qualification, available from September 2011. This specialist part-time course is for
The postgraduate certificate stage introduces you to coaching and mentoring and the core practices needed to become an effective practitioner. You develop practical skills through coaching demonstrations and substantial coaching practice. You also reflect on your progress as a learner and practitioner, and are supported with reflective practice approaches and supervision.
The MSc stage enables you to become a ethical and critically reflexive practitioner, able to operate effectively as a coach or mentor in a range of different contexts. In addition, you gain the knowledge and skills to engage in research-based inquiry into the theory and practice of coaching and mentoring to enhance the range and depth of your coaching practice.
The postgraduate certificate stage is accredited by the EMCC at Senior Practitioner level. We are the only UK university to offer this.
The course is unique in the market in that it examines how a coach or mentor can best work with an individual in the context of their organisational system. We draw on theories and case studies, and examine individual and organisational psychology.
We help you develop your own practice as a coach or mentor. This involves examining our presence and approaches as well as commercial matters such as business development and networking.
The course is delivered by a team of nationally renowned tutors who are specialists in the field.
You have the opportunity to study emerging areas such as team coaching and applied practice.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring level is primarily focused on developing students' professional practice to meet the professional expectations of the EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) at Senior Practitioner level. Students successfully completing the Postgraduate Certificate will be entitled to a certificate confirming that they have completed a programme of training accredited by the EMCC at Senior Practitioner level.
Part-time – typically eight months for the postgraduate certificate and two years for the MSc.
Modules are taught in four day blocks, with approximately eight weeks between each one.
