The textiles industry is continually evolving. Developing new products that meet the needs of a changing market demands a combination of technology and design technology. This programme will give you access to the latest developments across the textile industry to equip you for these challenges.

You’ll receive training in key skills including laboratory practice, problem solving, and reasoning, and you’ll undertake a substantial research dissertation. In addition, you’ll have the chance to specialise in either textile technology or textile design technology, depending on your own interests and career plans. A variety of optional modules will also give you the chance to learn about topics such as medical textiles, or fashion and sustainability.

Taught by experts in one of the UK’s major hubs for textile research, this programme will help you gain the specialist knowledge and skills to build a career in a fast-paced and challenging industry.

We have plenty of facilities to help you make the most of your time at Leeds, including well-equipped laboratories and purpose-built computer clusters so you can build your skills on both PC and Mac.

Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Society of Dyers and Colourists as being equivalent to its ASDC examinations leading to Chartered Colourist (CCol) status. It is also accredited by The Textile Institute at Associate level (CText ATI), this demonstrates a good broad knowledge of textiles and its application, and allows you to apply for Licentiateship (LTI) upon graduation, and Associateship (CText ATI) after one year in industry.

Course content

Everyone studies the same compulsory modules throughout the programme, which allow you to become a confident researcher and give you experience of practical lab work in Semester 2. You’ll apply the knowledge and skills that you have gained throughout the course to a substantial piece of independent research, which you’ll submit by the end of the programme in September.

You’ll also have the chance to specialise in the aspects of textiles that interest you by selecting the appropriate pathway.

Textile Design Technology pathway

In the modules on this pathway you’ll learn how to view technology through the eyes of both the designer and the technologist. You’ll gain understanding of how to manipulate technology to design and produce new products and how to maintain and/or improve the desirability of current products.

Textile Technology pathway

You will gain in-depth knowledge of advanced textile technology, textile processes and quality management together with the science, technology and testing of functional textile materials, product development, coloration and finishing processes, medical textiles, nonwovens and performance clothing.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

If you take the Textile Design Technology pathway, you could work in the industry as designers or in areas, which need an understanding of technology and design e.g. buying, textile product development for apparel, and in various third party testing houses. Moreover, you could work in various textile industries in managerial positions including the retail and supply chain management with major clothing companies and their suppliers.

The Textile Technology pathway will allow you to gain the skills to pursue a career in any of the following fields: technical consultancy; education and training; and academic research in technical textiles. You may also be employed as a product development technologist in specialist fields such as medical textiles, geotextiles and civil engineering materials, aerospace and transport engineering materials, and sport and performance clothing.

The complete Masters (MSc) course in Technical Textiles enables you to develop a high level of understanding of modern technical textiles, preparing you for a career in the textile or related industries as a manager or researcher, or for an academic career.

Graduates of this programme are expected to understand the whole process of converting fibrous materials into the end product and to be able to identify and analyse the appropriate material and production route for a specific end product. You will also have developed the expertise and skill to conduct quality evaluation of textile products.

The complete MSc programme is made up of taught course units and a research dissertation. The taught course units are delivered through a combination of lectures and practical laboratory work.

The Masters programme in Technical Textiles enables you to develop a high level of understanding of the advanced Technical Textiles sector, preparing you for a career in the textile or related industries as a manager or researcher, or for an academic career.

After successfully completing the programme, you will have gained a thorough grounding and understanding of the whole process of converting fibrous polymeric materials to the end product. This successful delivery to the Technical Textiles sector involves materials performance, Computer Aided Design (CAD), 2D/3D product design and specification, sustainability, effective supply chains and an understanding of diverse product sectors such as textile composites, protective wear, filtration, sportswear, medical textiles and the integration of electronics into textile structures.

Coursework and assessment

You will be assessed by a combination of exams and coursework. The coursework supports the development of your transferable skills such as literature review and report writing.   • Characteristics of fabrics and fabric mechanical properties. Yarn and Nonwovens Technology
  • Principles and applications of KES-FB and FAST fabric evaluation systems. Comfort in garment microclimates.

Yarn and Nonwovens Technology

This programme unit introduces the technologies of producing yarns and nonwovens from staple fibres and continuous filaments and provides knowledge in the quality and quality control aspects of yarn production. 

  • Fibre preparation, ring and other modern spinning technologies, texturing, yarn quality control, fancy yarns, composite yarns and yarn preparation.

Applied Manufacturing Processes

This programme unit provides a working knowledge of the weaving, knitting and joining processes, types of machinery used, types of fabric structures and associated properties of the product fabrics.

  • Fundamentals of weaving. Shuttle and shuttleless looms; multi-phase weaving machines and other modern developments in weaving technology; warp preparation; technical weaving and braiding.

Please note: This course will run at Level 6, which is equivalent to the final year of a BA Honours degree, and is a preparatory course for students who want to study at postgraduate level, but currently need further knowledge and skills before being eligible for postgraduate study.

The course is also suitable for graduates who would like to further their knowledge and skills before moving into industry. It covers design for menswear and womenswear, product development, garment technology and pattern cutting.

The course encourages creative thinking and innovative design approaches, and emphasises that 3D realisation is key to understanding the process of design and manufacture.

What is the Master of Bioscience Engineering: Human Health Engineering all about? 

 HHE offers a unique programme and educational vision focusing on technology for healthy humans. While many programmes in biomedical technology are offered in Belgium and abroad, HHE is the first and only programme offered in English that applies the unique combination of human physiology and engineering in a broad range of areas for healthy humans.

Structure

The HHE curriculum is comprised of 120 ECTS (four semesters). The programme is organised into a two-module major, a minor, a master’s thesis and elective courses.

Major

The first module (16 ECTS) contains four courses that will allow you to gain insight in the working of the different physiological systems of the human body as well as in the psychology of the healthy human. 

The second module (41 ECTS) consists of eight engineering courses. In this module, you are challenged to gain insight in technology and apply your technological knowledge to solve real-life problems in a creative way via practical exercises and project work.

The major also includes a broadening course on religion and society (3 ECTS). 

Minor, master's thesis and electives

The 20 ECTS minor is comprised of courses chosen to either strengthen your major or to broaden your expertise in another domain.

MA Design Future Society is an 18-month programme, leading to a joint award with Mannheim University of Applied Sciences. The programme includes study at both universities. If you start the programme at Leeds your first semester will be at Leeds, your second semester will be at Mannheim and then you will return to Leeds for your third semester.

All students registered on the programme may apply for Erasmus+ funding which will contribute to travel and living expenses during the five month exchange. The School of Design and Leeds University’s International Office and Language Centre will provide support for applications for funding, visas and pre-sessional language tuition.

Course content

Fundamentally multi-disciplinary and collaborative, course content encourages innovation and autonomy in response to set briefs and self initiated study supported by expertise in research, strategic thinking and practical implementation of communication design. Traditional academic study in the form of essays, literature reviews and reports, combines with social projects requiring, empathy, team working, concept realisation and execution. Students are required to provide evidence of effective decision-making, objective self-reflection and critical evaluation through visual and oral presentations, critiques, reflective logs and reports, visual diaries, poster presentations and portfolio development.

In the first semester students undertake theoretical and practical study in integrated media, semiotics, philosophy, sociology and research methodology in order to identify and manage complex social issues and communicate insights and design proposals by effectively employing advocacy skills and presentation techniques. Team work and collaboration are essential to the successful generation and implementation of creative solutions, therefore students are required, within this context, to demonstrate independent judgement, decision-making and personal responsibility.

In Semester 2 there is a five-month exchange programme to Mannheim which involves the application of design thinking within a different cultural environment through independent and group social projects; presenting significant challenges in comprehension, interpretation, empathy and communication. Students are encouraged to develop entrepreneurial attitudes in seeking opportunities for collaboration; contributing to professional development by operating in new areas of influence and articulating complex information into a coherent creative proposal.

In the third semester you will return from Mannheim and the programme concludes with a major research dissertation or innovation project, independently conceived and managed, demonstrating abilities in research, holistic understanding and applying contemporary knowledge to solving future problems. The knowledge, skills and qualities acquired through this postgraduate programme are transferable for employment in a variety of sectors.

Learning and teaching

Lectures, seminars, tutorials, creative and technical workshops, creative studio sessions, group learning, group critiques and peer assessment. There will be an emphasis on social and situated learning where dialogue, reflection, intuition, critical analysis and judgement are exercised within the context of group learning and group assignments, supported by utilising social media networks and content sharing to connect students from both institutions.

- Body – involves fabric design for fashion, accessories and clothing, incorporating issues such as health, well-being and smart wearables
- Space – incorporates textile and material design for the built environment, interiors, furnishings and transport.

Both pathways will take relevant contemporary issues into strong consideration such as market knowledge, sustainability and manufacture.

Textile students employ traditional and innovative skills, while exploring constantly evolving materials and technology to create diverse and surprising results. The interface encourages a dynamic and challenging environment, frequently employing multidisciplinary and collaborative methods to express the breadth of textiles, and pushing the boundaries of current textile practice.

During the first year, students are required to take part in induction programmes using our equipment and technology, to ensure that they have adequate specialist skills. Practical instruction in dyeing, fabric and fibre technologies is provided. Industrial projects are included to introduce students to a great variety of design experiences. Collaborative work is strongly encouraged in the School and across the College.

Progress is monitored through tutorials, group critiques, work reviews and seminars. All students must pass a formal Interim Exam to progress to the second year, when they are expected to direct their work towards a specified context. The staff team work within the specialisms and interact with all the textile students. They are all involved in external professional practice and research.

Critical & Historical Studies

The RCA provides a unique environment for postgraduate art and design students to reflect upon their own practice, and to engage with students from their own and other disciplines. The role of Critical & Historical Studies (CHS) is to support the studio programmes in enabling these critical engagements to take place. The courses offered by CHS to first year studio-based MA students propose an intellectual framework within which they can begin to establish a coherent relationship between theory and practice.

In the autumn and spring terms there are a series of College-wide seminars and lectures. The autumn term series will relate to your particular discipline (though it is possible to elect to join a series being offered to students on other programmes) whereas the spring term series will be more broad-based and cross-disciplinary in nature.

In the spring and summer terms, a CHS tutor will give you individual tutorials to support the development of a dissertation which is submitted at the start of the second year. The dissertation should be between 6,000–10,000 words in length – this is a major piece of work and you will be not be able to submit for the Final Examination until you have passed this assessment.

You’ll begin to develop your understanding of advertising principles from the start of the programme, when you’ll study consumer behaviour and explore how brands can adopt these different theories to inform their marketing strategies.

Focusing on contemporary issues, you’ll look at the process of strategic marketing communications and how strategic marketing works on the global stage. At the same time, you’ll study practical design modules where you’ll learn to visualise creative communications ideas and present your proposals to clients, as well as considering how compelling text within an advertising concept can influence consumers.

In Semester 2 you’ll build on this foundation by exploring integrated communication, developing creative concepts that can work for a range of different media outlets, as well as the broader aspects of campaign planning, print, radio and TV ad production and the ethics of advertising campaigns.

You’ll think about reach, frequency and the often complex question of return on investment and even choose from specialist modules on topics such as social media, sales promotion, brand management and direct marketing.

From the very start of the programme you’ll develop a broad base of knowledge. You’ll explore the concepts of entrepreneurship, enterprise and social enterprise as well as different ethical, social and sustainable approaches. You’ll study the challenges faced by social enterprises today and even the process of setting up a new business.

At the same time, you’ll learn about consumer behaviour and the fashion marketing cycle. You’ll research and develop prototype garments to explore how innovative design ideas can meet the challenges of sustainability and ethics, or make the most of emerging technologies.

In addition, you can tailor your degree to suit your interests and career plans with a choice of optional modules on topics such as fashion photography, textile design, fashion industry analysis and sustainability. Past students have gone on to jobs as fashion designers and design teachers all over the world. Others have started their own labels; one former student who has established a label in Hong Kong recently brought her collection to the Pure trade show in London.

Many students have been successful in applying for internships, for example at Gareth Pugh, Roksanda Ilincic, Jasper Garvida for Ethologie and Thomas Tait. Two students who undertook internships at notjustalabel.com now have their own labels in Hong Kong and New Delhi.
