This course is aimed at applicants who are training to become an advanced clinical practitioner in a wide variety of healthcare settings. It is intended for experienced healthcare professionals and for those wishing to formalise and develop their role as an advanced clinical practitioner. The course seeks to focus on decision-making, diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical management. You share learning with others from an extensive range of multi-professional backgrounds to create a vibrant and challenging learning environment.
The core modules focus on the four elements of advanced practice • clinical practice • education • managerial/leadership • research and flexibility is built into this course to enable you to tailor the course and focus on your area of specialism using a wide choice of elective modules.
Recognition of prior credited learning and recognition of prior experiential learning have been adopted for these awards to facilitate entry to the course.

This course is designed to provide a platform of essential skills, supported by a variety of pathways that provides you with a genuine choice. This range seeks to provide you with the opportunity to critically discuss cases, demonstrate knowledge within a simulation and develop critical appraisal skills.
You also take part in practical assessments that are designed to ensure that you are safe and able to make judicious clinical decisions based on your knowledge and understanding. The range of your practice related learning is recorded and documented in the Personal and Professional Development Portfolio (PPDP), which is a personal record of learning through the course. The format of your e-portfolio will be dependent on local and professional body requirements.
The course is structured around a combination of both core and elective modules, some of which are delivered via distance learning.

Successful completion of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice will prepare you to seek an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) post or if already employed as a trainee ACP, to formalise this post with a nationally recognised academic qualification. Successful completion also provides the practitioner with the skill set to take on a more strategic leadership role within a secondary or primary health care setting.

This course is purpose-built to meet the clinical and professional development needs of the NHS workforce, including potential educators in simulation-based learning in the South East.
It allows participants to advance their skills and knowledge in a mix of theoretical and practical sessions including group work activities, debriefing and feedback, the exploration of technical issues, human factors and fidelity. Students are expected to develop a portfolio of teaching experience which reflects the educational principles of the modules and demonstrates competence in teaching.
Principles and Practice of Simulation is delivered over the course of five days in the medical school, whereas Feedback and Debriefing in Simulation is a smaller module, allowing students to develop their teaching portfolio in practice. Principles and Practice of Simulation and Teaching and Learning in Medical Education are assessed by way of academic essays following the delivery of each module.
This PGCert will provide specialist knowledge that will be useful for any career in the field of healthcare that involves the support of learning and assessment in practice.
In addition, the programme will enable you to develop the skills of critical analysis, critical reflection and the evaluation of research evidence commensurate with postgraduate study.
Delegates who graduate from the PGCert will take with them specialist knowledge and the confidence to design simulation scenarios, and facilitate beneficial debriefing sessions.
As most graduates will already be employed in a medical educator role prior to starting the course, the PGCert is designed to increase the repertoire of the educators, and to enable them to deliver simulation sessions more effectively within their chosen setting.
This practical course uses a work-based learning approach to develop the higher-level skills that will lead to advanced practitioner status.
This is a challenging and intense programme and allows experienced neonatal intensive care nurses to become qualified advanced neonatal nurse practitioners.
This 12 month course requires a high level of commitment to succeed and you will move from a nursing to a medical rota immediately upon qualification.
You will achieve a number of clinical competencies such as advanced resuscitation skills, insertion of percutaneous long lines, insertion of umbilical and venous catheters, airway management and intubation and chest drains.
The programme may be commissioned by Health Education North West to meet the needs of a modernizing NHS. Upon completion you will be eligible for a non-medical advanced practitioner in Neonates to work within a junior medical rota.
You are expected to be flexible during the programme to facilitate your learning and clinical practice/experience:
Simulation teaching will be undertaken in the university’s simulation suite and in the clinical area.
You will be expected to undertake a series of assessments including a clinical portfolio, written assignments, OSCE, and supervised clinical practice by specialist registrars, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners and consultant neonatologists.
Our Clinical Practice Wards are located in the Mary Seacole Building on the second floor. There are four rooms designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patient's beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.
We also have a number of clinical skills rooms that enhance student learning from taking blood pressure, to giving CPR and more complicated procedures. Along with nursing skills rooms where you can practice in a ward situation, there are basic skills rooms for sessions such as moving and handling.
The patient simulation laboratory provides you with the opportunity to tackle real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment. Set up like a hospital ward, the lab contains hi-tech patient simulators that can mimic everything from the common cold to a major heart condition.

All the simulation equipment can be linked up to some very hi-tech computer and audio-visual aids. Groups of students get to role-play a wide range of different scenarios, with a lab co-ordinator observing, running and intervening in the scenario remotely.
Sophisticated computer equipment can also provide detailed physiological information for each of the simulators under observation. The lab will help you develop the clinical skills you need but also the high level communication skills that will make a real difference to your patients.
Upon completion of this course, students will become advanced neonatal nurse practitioners and will work on a medical rota. Some students may also wish to progress onto a PhD or work as a nurse consultant or in a leadership role in clinical practice.
