Overview

This innovative MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, developed in collaboration with health care professionals, is designed to prepare clinicians from a variety of professions to undertake advanced practice roles.

Modern healthcare practice has seen traditional professional boundaries change to reflect the demands of national healthcare policy, the scope of practice and patient needs. Increasingly, advanced practitioners in nursing, midwifery and allied health professions have to be prepared both academically and clinically to deliver complex care traditionally delivered by doctors.

This course aims to extend your competence to advanced practitioner level through education, clinical experience and support from a Designated Supervising Medical Practitioner (DSMP).

The MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice is a four-year, part-time programme, and is made up of 180 credits, including five taught modules of up to 30 credits each, plus the Advanced Clinical Practice Portfolio (60 credits).

In addition to the Advanced Clinical Practice Portfolio, you are required to undertake the core Research and Study Skills modules plus three optional modules of your choice, from a defined menu.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 1200 hours of associated clinical practice. During the clinically focused hours students will be under direct and/or indirect supervision by their allocated DSMP or a designated advanced practitioner.

In addition to the group discussions, each student will have the opportunity for five individual tutorials per Advanced Clinical Practice Portfolio module with their academic supervisor. The DSMP will support the completion of the Advanced Clinical Practice Portfolio.

Learning and assessment

How will I be taught?

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Seminars and case presentations support learning alongside the situational analyses of advanced practice. The use of e-learning materials, self-directed study guides, indicative reading lists provided by both University staff and clinically-based medical consultants and professionals will support your development. The use of clinical simulation and clinical skills laboratories will enhance the development of your skills in a safe environment. Additional proformas will be utilised according to your speciality, to allow you to develop skills appropriate to your clinical area of practice.

How will I be supported?

The University offers a wide range of services and activities designed to support students. These include a student counselling service, a student advisory service, crèche and day facilities, sport and exercise facilities, as well as campus information, library and IT services.

This programme gives students the opportunity to share ideas with health professionals. As well as developing their own intellectual abilities, this sharing of ideas enables them to learn and benefit from the experiences of others. Opportunity is given for this sort of discussion and exchange of ideas through seminars and tutorials.

All students are given a named personal tutor following registration onto the programme, who is able to assist them with any pastoral care as well as advice on writing style, grammar and academic mentoring.

All modules within the programme make extensive use of Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Learning Central, on which students will find course materials, links to related materials and assessment exemplars.

For students whose first language is not English there are open access English Language courses available. These are 5 week courses run on a first come first served basis and cost an administration fee of £25.

We will provide you with feedback on your work in a variety of formats. These will include oral feedback during lectures, written feedback provided through online module discussion forums, and electronic written feedback on assessed coursework through GradeMark. You can discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

- Clinical Skills 1
This will involve further developing your knowledge and skills in relation to examining patients with cardiac, respiratory and musculosketal diseases. This will include completing a comprehensive patient medical history, thoroughly examining each system mentioned above and identifying their treatment and management plan based on an individual clinical presentation.

- Influences on practice
You will debate the political, legal and professional influences on advanced practice in context with today’s healthcare system. Professional influences include considering the role of advanced practice within the Welsh Advanced Practice Framework. Legal influences include accountability and political influences will address the requirements advocated by Welsh Government.

Year Two:
- Clinical conditions 2
This will involve developing your understanding of altered physiological processes in relation to endocrine, neurological and abdominal disease processes, for example Diabetes and Thyroid disease, Parkinson’s disease, liver and gut diseases.

- Clinical Skills 2
You will continue to develop your knowledge and skills in relation to examining patients with endocrine, neurological and abdominal disease. This will include completing a comprehensive patient medical history, thoroughly examining each system mentioned above and identifying their treatment and management plan based on an individual clinical presentation.

- Research methods
You will learn how to critically evaluate a range of research methodologies.

Year three:

- Dissertation
You will choose a topic relevant to your own area of practice and critically evaluate the role of the advanced practitioner within your area.
- Independent Prescribing or

Optional module:
- Critical reflection on learning in the workplace.
- Leading effective teams in health & social care.

There is a dedicated route for paediatric practitioners.

Learning and teaching methods

You will attend the University one day a week. First year students will study on Mondays, whilst second and third years are taught on Thursdays.

You will be taught by a variety of methods including tutorials, lectures, case study presentations, peer presentations, and problem-based learning. You will also undertake practicals in our Clinical Simulation suite as well as in actual clinical practice.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

On this degree, you will develop a range of clinical skills in greater depth and gain the knowledge to assess, diagnose and treat patients.

Study of relevant protocols, policy and research will complement this to allow safe practice at an advanced level.

Assessment methods

Assessments include written examinations, assignments and OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations). The OSCE’s will take place in May each year and be completed as part of the clinical skills modules and involve undertaking a comprehensive patient history, examining a particular bodily system, and identifying a management and treatment plan for the individual.

The physician associate (PA) is one of the newest allied medical professions and presents a unique and exciting route to clinical care for graduates. Dissertation/report

All MA students submit either a dissertation or a report.

The dissertation is based on original empirical research, whereas the report is based on secondary research, often taking the form of a literature review.

The course focuses on a critical approach to simulation and its uses. This is a flexible, blended learning programme designed with the needs of busy medical and healthcare professionals in mind.

The course is composed of the core unit (where you also spend time in the University simulation centre) plus one second optional unit (either Workplace Based Learning or Contemporary Educational Perspectives) and is designed to help you develop a sound theoretical basis to your practice as a medical educator, both within simulation and in your wider role as a clinical educator.

Modules

The PgCert in Medical Simulation is obtained by attending and passing two units:

• The core unit (Simulation in Practice)
and either:
• Workplace Based Learning, or

Both these units shift from a focus on teaching to broader issues of curriculum, educational theory and how these relate to learning and teaching at work.

Assessment

You will be assessed using formative and summative elements i.e. assessment for learning and assessment of learning. Course Aims

It is expected that on completion of this Award the student will be a recognised Advanced Clinical Practitioner (HEWM, 2015) with an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded autonomous scope of practice, the characteristics of which are shaped by the context in which the individual practices.

Entry Requirements

New entrants to Advanced Clinical Practice:
Also, to become an Advanced Clinical Practitioner must have:
Commitment to providing protected learning time for the trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner during the MSc and this is equivalent to:
- One day a week in University (or equivalent) reading, writing and other academic activities.
- One day a week protected time for supported clinical practice (or equivalent)

- Applicants without a first degree:
Universities have a separate policy for applicants who do not hold a first degree at 2:2 but have substantial and relevant clinical or prior study experience.

- Exisiting Practitioners:
Existing Practitioners who are currently working in an Advanced Clinical Practice role and do not have a MSc level of education have options to either complete the Masters or continue in the role and update in-line with their CPD requirements.
There are ‘Top Up’ arrangements for existing Practitioners who do not have a full Masters degree. They have the option to complete the degree and to do this they would need to be in a relevant Advanced Clinical Practice post and supported by their organisation.

- Employers:
All organisations supporting staff to undertake an Advanced Clinical Practice course will need to ensure as part of their workforce plans the role of Advanced Clinical Practitioner is embedded within their organisation structures. Once the trainee is a qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner, there will need to be on-going support from the Trust

What will I study?

The course will focus on furthering your understanding of simulation as a teaching, learning and assessment modality for clinicians.

In the first two modules, underpinning theory will be explored in relation to simulation, and the range of different potential types and uses of simulation will be examined in relation to existing literature.

You will then have the opportunity to specialise in the particular area of clinical education most suited to your own situation and professional interests. Pathways are available in Curriculum Design, Educational Leadership, Educational Supervision, Technology Enhanced Learning and Improving Practice.

How will I study?

The course is delivered through online blended learning, using the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), with streamlined access to online reading materials, many of which have been specially optimised for use with mobile devices. It is designed to be ‘step on, step off’, offering flexibility for participants to study in a single year or over a maximum three-year period.

The online learning is blended with a small number of face-to-face workshops, typically up to three per module. Attendance at the face-to-face sessions is highly recommended but, due to the flexibility of the programme, it is not compulsory.

Edge Hill University is the usual location for face-to-face sessions. The campus provides a modern and stimulating environment for study and is equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. The VLE is used to deliver the online elements of the programme.

How will I be assessed?

There are no examinations. A range of assessment strategies are employed in this programme including online tasks, critical reflection on practice, assignments, evaluative reports, case studies, peer observation of teaching, the design of learning activities and the creation of portfolios. You will be supported by your academic tutors with academic skills practice and ‘formative feedback’ on work-in-progress. You will be expected to write approximately 4,000 words (or equivalent) for each module.

Who will be teaching me?

The academic team comprises highly experienced tutors from Edge Hill University, as well as a Visiting Professor and Emeritus Professor. Many of the team are research active in the fields of technology enhanced learning and clinical education and some are also University Teaching and Learning Fellows or SOLSTICE Fellows, with an extensive publication record.

Some of the academic tutors are, or have been, practising clinicians who have specialised in clinical education whilst others are experienced educationalists from a range of backgrounds. The team is further enhanced by an experienced learning technologist and there is guest input from clinical experts and practitioners.

Careers

Whilst many practitioners will continue to practise in their own health and related professions, this award carries with it the opportunity to develop a more formal role in undergraduate or postgraduate clinical and professional education.

Launched in 2015/16, this is a new programme for UCL Medical School. However, our taught Master's-level programme, Medical Education, has helped graduates to attain high-level posts as NHS consultants or academics in the university setting. Graduates from the full MSc course will receive confirmation that they have completed an RCN Accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner pathway.

The School of Health and Social Care at London South Bank University has been delivering high quality Royal College of Nursing (RCN) accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) education for over 20 years, with demand increasing year on year. While initially the focus was on developing experienced nurses working in primary care settings, this has subsequently expanded to include nurses from secondary and tertiary services.

This course has therefore been developed for both experienced qualified registered nurses and other health professionals working in primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings, who wish to undertake advanced clinical education at master's level. This education will provide high-quality preparation not only for Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) but also for Advanced Clinical Practitioners and health professionals who need to work at a higher level of practice.

RCN Accreditation

While not all of the students undertaking this course will be nurses, other health professionals will benefit from the rigorous standards set by the RCN Accreditation unit for advanced nurse practitioner preparation. Their standards are currently the only quality marker for Advanced Practitioner preparation in England. RCN Accreditation indicates that this course has been evaluated against 15 standards and associated criteria for educational preparation and judged to prepare practitioners to an advanced level (RCN, 2012).

Further, in accordance with the RCN endorsement (2012), the course has also been designed to comply with the Department of Health (England) (2010) position statement on Advanced Level Nursing.

This programme has been accredited by the RCN Centre for Professional Accreditation until 31 August 2021.

Modules

PgDip:

The structure for the course comprises of a prescribed sequence of six compulsory modules, the order depending on the start date (September or January) and the rate of progression.

Each 20 credit module accounts for 200 hours of total student effort. This typically comprises of 36 – 42 classroom contact hours, 14 blended learning activity hours, practice based learning hours (equivalent to a minimum of 3 hours per week) and the remainder for self-directed study.

A range of assessment strategies will be used to reflect the academic, clinical and professional aspects of the programme. This includes use of exams, a written case study, an essay, completion of a Practice Based Learning record including Practice Facilitator feedback and evaluation of practice, OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and production of a clinical portfolio including patient feedback.

Teaching and learning

There are a range of facilities to support teaching practice skills and simulation. These include the skills laboratories, clinical and simulation equipment, themed notice boards, resources, anatomical models and the media/skills technicians who maintain the labs and prepare for sessions.

Students are supported by a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) using “Moodle”. Students have access to the VLE using a web browser from home, from campus, or when mobile if they have a smart phone or tablet. Open access computers are provided in the Library and Learning Resource Centre on our Southwark campus. These computers enable access to the internet, email, Microsoft office and other supported software. Direct IT helplines are available to support students

E-learning will complement face-to-face delivery for all modules within the course, with 14 specific hours assigned to blended learning activities in each timetable.

Skills workshop

A four day workshop will continue to be provided mid-way through the course, to give the opportunity for students to practise, consolidate and develop their new skills in a supervised, supportive environment. This is currently used as an effective strategy which is very highly evaluated by our students.

Placements

Practice based learning requirements
The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) (2007) identify that learning within the work place is integral to a higher education programme and is demonstrated through engagement within the practice environment. This is particularly important for preparation for a course of this nature; for any students, even those with many years of experience, some of the areas covered by the programme will be new such as history-taking, physical examination skills, ordering and interpreting investigations, making differential diagnoses, pharmacology, prescribing, social sciences and mental health assessment, etc. One of the key requirements for the course is that the practice experience provides learning opportunities that enable students to achieve the course learning outcomes (RCN, 2012) and so in order to ensure this, learning in practice is purposely structured and assessed.

Students will spend the equivalent of 3 hours per week working in a "supernumerary capacity" in order to focus specifically on their clinical and professional development. This requirement extends beyond the University semesters to include the summer periods.

Practice Based Learning is supported through identification of a doctor/qualified Advanced Practitioner to act as the student's "Practice Facilitator" to initially supervise and subsequently support their clinical development. Other experienced senior clinicians can also supervise and support student development.

Evidence of practice based learning (36 hours of direct supervision and 180 hours of indirect supervised clinical practice) and feedback on progress is used as an element of assessment on the following modules: 1. Clinical Assessment Skills for Advanced Practice [Level 7] 2. Clinical Reasoning in Advanced Practice [Level 7] 3. Managing Complexity in Advanced Clinical Practice [Level 7]

The overall total for supervised hours through successful completion of these modules is 648 hours.

Graduate and employer surveys and feedback indicate our graduates are making a positive impact on patient care and service innovation in general practices, walk-in centres, urgent care centres, minor injury units, emergency departments, projects for refugees, asylum seekers and homeless populations, elderly care facilities, “out of hours” developments, rapid response services, intermediate care teams, prison services, acute medical and surgical teams, critical-care outreach and specialist hospital services.

Some of our graduates are now lead nurses within social enterprises, nurse partners in general practices, nurse representatives on commissioning boards, community matrons and consultant nurses. To date two graduates have gone on to pursue doctoral studies.

Physician associates are permanent members of the medical team, responsible for performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and recommending therapy. The role of physician associates is increasingly important within the healthcare workforce and individuals with this qualification are in demand.

Specialist course

This course has been developed as a stand-alone postgraduate taught programme with a graduate-entry ethos and a fully integrated course structure based on clinical presentations rather than body systems.

Excellent teaching  

We use a combination of problem based learning (PBL) tutorials, small group teaching and lectures to deliver a course with very high levels of staff-student contact time and excellent student satisfaction. The curriculum is delivered through a mixed methods approach incorporating early clinical skills training, reflective practice, clinical immersion, a short elective, distance learning, and a dedicated 'preparation for practice' block.

Coursework and assessment

We use a structured programme of formative and summative assessments to examine the knowledge and skills that you must develop. You will undertake written and OSCE examinations at the end of each year and will maintain a portfolio for personal and professional development (PPD).

Course unit details

The course is non-modular, providing you with an opportunity to develop and consolidate skills throughout each year of the course.

Taught content is delivered in blocks of study of increasing complexity alongside the two longitudinal themes of Personal and Professional Development (PPD) and Consultation Skills (CS), with assessment periods at the end of each year. Each taught block feeds seamlessly into the next and all components of the programme are compulsory.

You have the option of spending an elective period in a speciality of your choosing.

Course content for Year 1

The first year of the course begins with a four-month period of intensive study where you will develop your understanding of the essential basic and clinical sciences that facilitate safe and effective practice.

After this 16-week taught block, you will rotate through a series of medical and surgical placements, each incorporating a short period of university-based teaching.

The curriculum is built around a core content of common clinical situations that are then organised according to their relative complexity. The content of each taught block is delivered using a problem-based learning (PBL) approach through the study of clinical cases/scenarios.

Each case integrates elements of the taught content and you will learn about and reflect upon the related biomedical, behavioural and population sciences appropriate to the case.

PBL is supported by small group teaching, lectures and workshops to form a truly integrated curriculum with very high levels of contact time.

Course content for Year 2

The second year of the course provides more advanced specialist instruction in the core medical and clinical sciences alongside a comprehensive programme of clinical reasoning to prepare you to sit your national postgraduate examinations.

This course is part of a wider collaboration across the north-west. We work in partnership with Health Education England and the Universities of Liverpool and Central Lancashire to develop the physician associate role across the region.

With a focus on developing the knowledge and skills required for the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical pharmacy services, the course is underpinned by a student-led approach to learning and facilitates the acquisition of problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills. By combining academic and theoretical learning with experience of professional practice, the course helps you to develop the skills appropriate for the modern clinical pharmacy practitioner, and to face the challenges and make the most of the opportunities you will face in the future.

What you will study

Specialist practitioner e-tutors, teacher practitioners and academic staff facilitate learning in small groups with real-life problem-based scenarios, sharing knowledge, expertise and practice related experiences.

In the Patient Centered Clinical Pharmacy Practice module you will develop the knowledge and skills required for the systematic synthesis, implementation, evaluation and communication of care plans for patients with complex pharmaceutical care needs.

Your personal and professional practice will be developed in the Developing Personal Practice module by studying ways in which to promote effective communication and professionalism. You will also cover aspects of education and learning necessary for the professional development of other members of the healthcare team.

In the modules Implementing and Evaluating Clinical Pharmacy Service and Organisational Aspects of Clinical Pharmacy Service Development and Implementation you will consider the service-related aspects of being a clinical pharmacy practitioner. You will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to systematically implement services and to evaluate service outcomes, utilising evidence-based recommendations to develop services in order to improve health. You will develop practical experience of designing a research project in providing you with the knowledge and skills required to design, execute and report on a research project.

Teaching and assessment

A key element of the course is the use of simulation-based learning within our dedicated Pharmacy Simulation Centre and Clinical Skills Centre. This prepares you for periods of clinical learning on short professional practice placements, allowing you to integrate knowledge and skills learned in class, with core skills such as patient care and communication skills. This provides an enhanced learning experience as you transition between the academic and clinical learning environments.

We use a variety of teaching and learning methods which are grounded in adult reflective learning theory and adopt the principles of continuing professional development. An evidence-based approach is central to the teaching philosophy, with integrated, case-based methods to student learning embedded at all stages, to facilitate acquisition of problem-solving, critical thinking and decision making skills. This increases the relevance and meaning of the subject matter and enhances motivation and peer support networks. Ownership of the learning material is encouraged, increasing the depth of learning achieved. Overall, this approach means that you’ll be well-prepared for your future practice as a clinical pharmacy practitioner.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

There is an emphasis on fostering self-reliance in analysis and problem-solving, giving you confidence to seek practical solutions to problems and evaluate your own skills to identify your strengths and areas for development. As an independent and reflective life-long-learner you will have team-working and reflection abilities, which are essential for developing, implementing and evaluating clinical pharmacy services.

STAFF DELIVERING ON THIS COURSE

Lecturers are practiced academics, with active links to national and international pharmacy organisations including the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, General Pharmaceutical Council, Canadian Pharmaceutical Association, Royal Pharmaceutical Society Faculty, The European Society of Clinical Pharmacy and the Austrian Chamber of Pharmacists. They also have experience and links to a host of pharmacy and clinical practice settings, and bring a wealth of knowledge and insight to the classroom. They are facilitators of learning who support you to build on your pre-existing graduate skills in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. You will be assigned a personal tutor for pastoral care and to assist in any general matters that relate to your studies.

ASSESSMENT

You will be assessed by continuous assessment based on your acquisition and application of knowledge in practice-related problem-based scenarios and activities including: responding to case studies, developing care plans and essay responses to specific topics and contribution to online discussion forums, formative peer-assessed essays, short answer problem/case study questions and multiple-choice questions.

Typically students are assessed each year:

  • 3 written assignments, including essays
  • 1 dissertation
  • 1 portfolio
  • 1 oral assessment
  • 1 project output

Placements

You will be provided with short periods of practice experience focused on the delivery of clinical pharmacy services to patients in a range of practice settings. These periods are a compulsory component of the course and will be arranged by the University and are unpaid. Experienced clinicians provide supervision and additional teaching in a clinical setting during these periods of experience enabling you to put theory into context.

This course is designed to provide a platform of essential skills, supported by a variety of pathways that provides you with a genuine choice. This range seeks to provide you with the opportunity to critically discuss cases, demonstrate knowledge within a simulation and develop critical appraisal skills.

You also take part in practical assessments that are designed to ensure that you are safe and able to make judicious clinical decisions based on your knowledge and understanding. The range of your practice related learning is recorded and documented in the Personal and Professional Development Portfolio (PPDP), which is a personal record of learning through the course. The format of your e-portfolio will be dependent on local and professional body requirements.
