Our MClin Res Clinical Research course is aimed at nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and other non- medical/dental healthcare professionals who want to work in clinical research, or are already working in this area and want to develop the skills needed for other positions where research plays a key role.
You will develop in-depth knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings of clinical research and skills in research methods relevant to applied research in a range of contemporary clinical practice settings.
The course is mainly delivered online, but is complemented by two compulsory four-day campus-based introductory and winter study schools, and one mid-semester study day in Semesters 1 and 2.

This ensures that the course gives you a balance of practical and academic skills. Assessments are designed to replicate the challenges you may face within the workplace. This offers an authentic experience and the opportunity to develop skills that are directly transferable to practice.
The course helps to improve your employment prospects and clinical skills, enabling you to lead clinical teams or work in teaching or research. If you study the course full-time, we provide placement experience in the UK where you work with an experienced clinician who is also an experienced tutor. The placement is an integral part of the course, so you choose the field in which you specialise and then apply your learning to clinical practice. If you study the course part-time and already work in clinical practice, you will be supported to apply your learning in your current post.
You learn from enthusiastic tutors including academics who have physiotherapy research published in peer reviewed journals. This includes Dr Stephen May, who is an internationally renowned physiotherapist who has contributed to several well known textbooks including the key text on the McKenzie Approach 'Lumbar Spine: Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy'.
Distance learning study
A key feature of this course is that all modules can be studied as distance learning or as university-based teaching. Distance learning allows you to study from any location in the world, and at times that are convenient for your work and life commitments.
To aid your professional and clinical development we use a range of online learning and teaching activities, such as interactive tutor and peer group discussions, patient video case studies and reflective journals around clinical practice. This MSc opens several career routes. The Supporting Professional Development programme and your academic advisor will highlight opportunities. Increased clinical skills and critical evaluation of practice lend themselves to clinical leadership roles. Graduates will work more independently, developing independent private practices or moving into advanced or extended scope roles. Some graduates pursue research or teaching careers in the UK or internationally, many going onto PhD study.
Students who join the course without HCPC registration may apply for this, to gain work experience in the UK during and after the course. Automatic registration is not guaranteed on completion of the course, however, the learning opportunities provided align to the HCPC standards.

In Stage 1, you study the core sciences underpinning physiotherapy practice. You are introduced to a range of physiotherapy interventions which are responsive to client need and underpinned by evidence-based approaches to practice. You also explore professional issues in health and social care. During this stage you complete three clinical placements where you assess and treat your own patients under the supervision of qualified physiotherapists. You may be allocated placements within paediatrics, elderly care, learning disabilities and mental health services in addition to acute, medical, musculoskeletal and neurological areas. Clinical placements are arranged by academic tutors and you should be prepared to travel for some placements.
In Stage 2 you complete three more clinical placements. You must complete 1,000 hours of satisfactory clinical practice to meet the requirements of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. You also develop your knowledge of the sciences underpinning physiotherapy and further explore the professional development of the physiotherapist and research methods.

This course has been developed as a stand-alone postgraduate taught programme with a graduate-entry ethos and a fully integrated course structure based on clinical presentations rather than body systems.
We use a combination of problem based learning (PBL) tutorials, small group teaching and lectures to deliver a course with very high levels of staff-student contact time and excellent student satisfaction. The curriculum is delivered through a mixed methods approach incorporating early clinical skills training, reflective practice, clinical immersion, a short elective, distance learning, and a dedicated 'preparation for practice' block.
We use a structured programme of formative and summative assessments to examine the knowledge and skills that you must develop. You will undertake written and OSCE examinations at the end of each year and will maintain a portfolio for personal and professional development (PPD).
The course is non-modular, providing you with an opportunity to develop and consolidate skills throughout each year of the course.
Taught content is delivered in blocks of study of increasing complexity alongside the two longitudinal themes of Personal and Professional Development (PPD) and Consultation Skills (CS), with assessment periods at the end of each year. Each taught block feeds seamlessly into the next and all components of the programme are compulsory.

The first year of the course begins with a four-month period of intensive study where you will develop your understanding of the essential basic and clinical sciences that facilitate safe and effective practice.
After this 16-week taught block, you will rotate through a series of medical and surgical placements, each incorporating a short period of university-based teaching.
The curriculum is built around a core content of common clinical situations that are then organised according to their relative complexity. The content of each taught block is delivered using a problem-based learning (PBL) approach through the study of clinical cases/scenarios.
Each case integrates elements of the taught content and you will learn about and reflect upon the related biomedical, behavioural and population sciences appropriate to the case.
PBL is supported by small group teaching, lectures and workshops to form a truly integrated curriculum with very high levels of contact time.

The second year of the course provides more advanced specialist instruction in the core medical and clinical sciences alongside a comprehensive programme of clinical reasoning to prepare you to sit your national postgraduate examinations.
This course is part of a wider collaboration across the north-west. We work in partnership with Health Education England and the Universities of Liverpool and Central Lancashire to develop the physician associate role across the region.
The three universities collaborate in interviewing applicants and you apply directly to the HEE North West physician associate programme, indicating your preference of university on the application form.
You will have access to medical facilities at the University (similar to students studying the Medicine MBChB course) with a focus on clinical teaching and highly advanced clinical simulation.

To study these programmes at the Graduate School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health you must be a registered nurse with a current practising certificate from the Nursing Council of New Zealand. You also need a Bachelor's degree from a New Zealand tertiary institution.
The level at which you study will depend on your previous academic achievements and chosen professional direction.
As a guide, for each 30-point course you take at the Graduate School, you should allocate around 10 hours per point for self-directed study, research, assessments and attendance at Schools.
If you’re studying full time, you can expect a workload of 40 hours of study time a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing one course per trimester will need to allocate approximately 20 hours of study a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working full time.
Through a blend of research, class work and clinical experience, our academic team will support and work with you throughout your study, both face-to-face and through internet-based technology. The Master of Nursing Science is made up of two parts. In Part 1, you’ll gain an understanding of applied pathophysiology and develop advanced assessment and clinical reasoning skills. You’ll complete two further courses from an approved range, in an area of specialist practice or other focus of your choice.
After completing Part 1 and with the permission of the head of school, you can begin Part 2 with either a coursework or research focus.
If you choose to focus on coursework, you’ll complete a research review, practice project and further taught courses.
With a research focus, you’ll complete a research methods course and undertake your thesis—an advanced research project that contributes to nursing knowledge.
There are also two optional pathways within the Nursing Science programme: the nurse prescribing pathway or the nurse practitioner pathway.
Nurse prescribing pathway
The nurse prescribing pathway gives you the skill set needed for a prescribing role in your practice. You’ll take a set of four core courses including clinical pharmacology and conclude with a Nurse Prescribing practicum (HLTH 529) which will help you prepare for the Nursing Council of New Zealand registration process.
The entry requirement into HLTH 529 is at least a B grade for all prerequisite courses.

The nurse practitioner pathway has a distinctive structure within the Master of Nursing Science and gives you the knowledge and skills of an advanced health professional.
You will need to complete six core courses and two pre-approved elective courses. Your elective courses must support your development as a nurse practitioner and need to be approved by the programme director.
At least a B grade for all prerequisite courses is required in order to progress to the Nurse Practitioner Practicum (HLTH 531).

The Clinical Assessment PGCert is suitable for healthcare practitioners, such as nurses and pharmacists, involved in the clinical assessment of patients. This includes specialist and advanced practitioners in areas such as community, accident and emergency, high-dependency, and critical care outreach.
The programme offers the knowledge and skills to enable you to assess patients from “head-to-toe” and develop evidence-based management strategies. You’ll develop practical skills in taking health history, auscultation, percussion and palpation in addition to diagnostic reasoning skills.
You’ll learn to evaluate and apply current policy, national guidelines and research. You’ll also learn to recognise accountabilities and responsibilities, and awareness of your personal and professional limitations.
The programme may enable you to move towards advanced practitioner status and gain access to the MSc Advanced Practice at the University of Leeds.
The compulsory modules are fundamental building blocks in your learning. The Clinical Examination module provides essential knowledge and skills necessary for a patient-centred, systems-based assessment of patients.
The Management of Patient’s Clinical Conditions gives the student the opportunity to take assessment data a stage further. It requires you to evaluate information elicited from patient assessment and develop diagnostic reasoning skills.
