This course is for audiological scientists and audiologists whose primary roles are the diagnosis and rehabilitation of hearing and balance problems in children and adults.

Modules

Year one is divided into two taught semesters, plus four months over the summer dedicated to your research project.

Semester one modules: Clinical Audiology 1; Principles for Auditory Rehabilitation; Physiology and Psychology of Hearing; Applied Research Methods.

The aim of the course is to provide qualified practitioners with a high level of specialist ultrasound knowledge and clinical experience. The course also develops investigative and analytical skills in order to help you to become a highly competent sonographer.

Although typically aimed at radiographers, midwives, doctors and nurses, anyone with a health based or science degree and a clinical placement may apply.

In addition, the course aims to develop interpersonal skills so that you become a highly effective communicator within the context of medical ultrasound.

The course teaching team are all practising sonographers and are therefore up to date with current practice. Innovative methods of teaching and learning are embedded in the academic programme. These include: audio and video lectures, online learning and the use of an ultrasound simulator for learning scanning techniques and recognising pathology.

Another important feature of the programme is the high level of support that the course team make available to you. Lectures are delivered to small groups, we have an open door policy and always answer emails and return phone calls.

Expect to experience a spectrum of academic studies that you can use to support your clinical and professional development.

Course overview:
The course is aimed qualified healthcare professionals - such as radiographers, midwives, nurses and doctors - who want to extend their field of expertise into the production and interpretation of diagnostic ultrasound images. Ultrasound is regarded as a complementary imaging procedure undertaken in the majority of modern. Diagnostic Imaging or X-ray departments. Sonographers scan patients/clients with a variety of diseases and conditions and, under written protocols, report on the images produced.

Entry Requirements:
You will normally be expected to hold either a first degree or an equivalent professional qualification and have had a minimum of two years experience as a qualified practitioner. The majority of applicants will be radiographers, midwives, doctors and nurses. However we will consider applicants with health based or science degrees providing that they are able to obtain a clinical placement. You must ensure that you have a satisfactory clinical placement where you can obtain a minimum of 250 hours of supervised ‘hands on’ clinical ultrasound experience - this is equivalent to 1 ½ days per week over a nine month period.

Why should I study this course?
Our postgraduate awards have received professional accreditation from CASE – the Consortium for Accreditation of Sonographic Education and are taught within the region’s foremost centre for radiography education, with a well-established and successful history. The course will further enhance your skills professionally, personally and practically.

Course structure:
This is a part-time day and evening course which has academic and clinical placement components. The academic components are delivered at the University on a Wednesday afternoon and evening. The clinical component takes place in practice and should cover a minimum of one day per week.

How will I be taught?
We place a real emphasis on student-centred learning, so the majority of study is by seminar and discussion groups where you and your fellow students will learn a great deal by sharing experiences. There will be a substantial amount of material that will be taught online or through video lectures.

Placements, Study Visits Available:
You are expected to organise your own clinical placement where you can obtain a minimum of 250 hours of supervised ‘hands on’ clinical ultrasound experience. This is equivalent to 1 ½ days per week over a nine month period.

Assessment:
You will be assessed via written assignments, presentations, examinations and clinical assessments. Academic modules are assessed by either a 3,000 word assignment or a 2,000 word assignment and a one hour unseen written examination. Clinical modules are assessed by clinical assessment (observed performance of ultrasound scans) in their own departments and OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations) undertaken at the University. You also have to keep a log book and diary of clinical practice.

Employability:
Health care professionals with a Medical Ultrasound degree are in great demand to work as sonographers and you will also be able to extend the scope of your current practice by incorporating expertise in sonography.

There is a severe shortage of sonographers. Sonography is an expanding field, with a steady increase in examinations requested year by year therefore you should have no difficulty in finding work as a qualified sonographer.

Clinical education is an integral and invaluable component of the programme. It is strongly embedded within the course structure. Preceding campus-based studies provide the skills and knowledge which students require in order to be prepared for their placements.

Continuing modernisation of the NHS has seen a move away from a focus on non-acute health interventions being delivered in hospitals to the delivery of care in the community. Experience gained on all clinical education modules throughout your undergraduate training aims to reflect these developments by providing you with a broad range of experience across a variety of settings including acute NHS hospitals, private healthcare providers, community hospitals, health centres, GP surgeries, schools, nursing homes and sports centres etc.

Regardless of location or specialty students are expected to adopt a holistic approach towards their patient/client, taking into account individual psychological, social, cultural and economic factors, whilst embracing the principles of health promotion and health education.

All clinical placement modules are organised on the student's behalf by the clinical co-ordination team. This allows us to provide you with a balanced clinical experience both in terms of the specialties/patient groups you have worked with and the range of health care setting you have worked in. It is important that you are exposed to a variety of health settings, which are reflective of current clinical practice.

In total students will complete in excess of 1,000 hours of clinical experience in order to complete the programme. Clinical education occurs in six-week blocks which gives you time to "find your feet" and have a highly valuable learning experience at the same time as providing you with plenty of opportunity to demonstrate your learning and develop as a clinician.

It is anticipated that whilst on clinical placement you will be working a 34-hour week minimum, (compared to full-time workers this effectively means you have one half-day off per week). However, the number of hours you work and the time at which you start and finish work is subject to negotiation with both college and the supervising clinical educator.

Whilst on placements you will be supervised by physiotherapists registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Students will be assessed on placement by their supervising clinician(s), using a standardized assessment tool – the Clinical Assessment Record (CAR form). The assessment score from clinical placement modules will contribute to your final degree classification

Most clinical placements are located within the Greater London area, ie within the M25, but a few could be further away necessitating "staying over on placement" during the week. You should anticipate the need to "stay over" on at least one or two occasions.

We are sympathetic to your needs when we assign clinical placements. However, we are unable to guarantee that any student will be located close to their home or term-time address and you may have to commute or live away from home for the duration of a placement or two. We do try to give special consideration to students whose personal circumstances fall within specified criteria, ie they have young children, are a main carer, or have a declared disability etc.

If the NHS is paying your university fees, your travel costs (in excess of the expense you normally incur between home and college) and if necessary the costs of alternative accommodation can be reclaimed from the NHS. However you should note that they is always a delay between paying out money and being reimbursed which can create temporary cash-flow issues.

The University of Liverpool, the Health and Care Professions Council and Society and College of Radiographers have recently re-approved this exciting professional programme, intended for graduates from a health, science, biomedical or social science background. Successful completion of the two-year, full-time, NHS funded (Tuition Fees) programme allows you to practice as a Therapeutic Radiographer within the National Health Service or private health sector.

Therapeutic radiographers play a vital role in the treatment of cancer patients, they are the only health professional qualified to plan and deliver radiotherapy. Crucially, they also support and care for patients throughout their treatment. This innovative pre-registration programme is designed to produce practitioners who are competent, discerning and committed to personal and professional development whilst at the same time ensuring that their patients receive the treatment and care appropriate to their needs.

This programme is studied full time over two calendar years, commencing in semester two (January). It is a vocational programme, taught and assessed predominately at level 7 but does not involve a substantial piece of independent work such as a research dissertation. The programme structure follows the University Framework for Modular Postgraduate Programmes, with students expected to take modules worth 60 credits in each year of study. The programme is a mixture of academic and clinical placement blocks, with 50 weeks of the programme delivered at the University integrated with 43 weeks of professional, clinical placement. The blocks of radiotherapy clinical placement will be delivered in the three main Cancer Centres in the North West of England – The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (and its two Satellite centres), the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (and its satellite centre) and Rosemere Cancer Centre.

The programme is delivered over four semesters and two post-semester periods to facilitate the completion of clinical placements. There are two assessment points in each year of study (normally May/June and December/January), at the end of each semester. The structure and pattern of the delivery of the programme ensures that theory and practice are fully integrated.

The Master of Professional Psychology is a one year course designed to meet the requirements of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for a generalist fifth year in psychology.

The course prepares selected psychology graduates in advanced psychotherapeutic skills required for general registration as a psychologist. It develops your professional capability to apply the theoretical, research, assessment and therapeutic skills involved in psychology. Following graduation, you will be eligible to undertake one year of supervised generalist practice – you will then progress to full registration as a psychologist.

You will develop expertise in applying counselling theories and practices through your understanding of a range of evidence-based psychotherapies. You will learn core skills and theoretical concepts underpinning the therapeutic process and extend your practical knowledge in counselling interventions as you develop therapeutic relationships with a range of client groups. The Masters enables you to practice as an art therapist in the NHS, Social Services, and educational establishments, and to become a practitioner registered with the British Association of Art Therapists and eligible to apply for registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Your learning is underpinned by the principles and practices of psychodynamic psychotherapy practised within the context of mental health care, and informed by contemporary art practice.

Via theoretical studies, clinical work and experiential learning you will integrate cognitive understanding and practical experience with a developing awareness of self and other. The nature of the therapeutic relationship between client, their art work, and the art therapist is explored, and you have the opportunity to put your learning into practice through two 60-day placements which are supervised and supported in-depth.

You are encouraged to develop your own art practice and to situate your work in relationship to your development as a therapist, to contemporary art practice and to psychoanalytic theories. You must be in personal therapy throughout the programme.

Modes of study

The MA in Art Psychotherapy is a course that leads to successful applicants becoming eligible to apply for registration as an Arts Therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the body which regulates and monitors standards of practice in the public sector. The programme can be studied in two modes - full-time for 2 years or part-time for 3 years. A clear indication of the mode chosen should be stated on application forms.

Full-time study

This course is for people with a relevant degree seeking to refocus their studies into the area of speech and language therapy. It will enable you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) to practise as a speech and language therapist in the UK.

As a speech and language therapist, you will assess, diagnose and treat children and adults with a wide range of communication difficulties. This will include developmental disorders and speech and language problems resulting from injury, stroke and disease. You will also develop strong practical skills as well as a sound understanding of the theory of speech and language therapy.

There is a major clinical studies (ie placement) element to this course and clinical work is underpinned by modules in linguistics, psychology and biological and medical sciences. Although every effort is made to arrange summer block placements to suit students’ circumstances, this is not always possible and students must be prepared to be flexible about placement location and timing. Students are responsible for any travel and/or accommodation costs incurred during placements.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching will include a mix of lectures, tutorials, student-led seminars, clinical placement experience, case study analysis and individual project work. Emphasis will be placed on integrating clinical and university based learning opportunities and on independent study. Your performance will be assessed by a combination of course work including essays, reports, presentations, vivas and examinations, as well as clinical practical assessments.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance at placement is compulsory and your attendance at QMU-based modules is expected. Classes will be spread over the whole week, except for placement days when you will be off campus. This is a full-time course, with the expectation that classes, independent study and placement together require 35 - 40 hours of dedicated time each week.

However, long-term recovery is dependent on the timely delivery of effective treatment. The MSc Early Intervention in Psychosis develops your academic and clinical skills in the identification and treatment of psychosis. Early intervention is an evidence-based, holistic and person-centered approach that is highly effective in reducing the long-term impact of psychotic illness on the individual and their families. It has now become an integral part of mental health services in the UK and worldwide. The Department of Health's Competence and Curriculum Framework for the Physician Assistant (now Physician Associate) defines the Physician Associate as:

Physician Associates (PAs) are part of a new and growing profession within the NHS. PAs work alongside doctors in hospitals and GP surgeries to provide safe and quality care to patients. Our Physician Associate Master's course is an exciting and innovative modular programme, delivered full-time over two years.
Applicants should be aware that the programme is delivered over a period 45 weeks in Year 1 and 48 weeks in Year 2. In addition the course is intense, with significant contact hours. Students should expect to be studying on campus from 9am - 6pm five days a week. All students must be ready to assume responsibility for their own learning.

Clinical placements will start in the first term of Year 1 with weekly one-day GP placements. In Year 2 the majority of time will be spent on clinical placement in various practice settings. You should broadly expect to adopt the working patterns of the supervising clinician (clinical educator). Generally, you are expected to complete 42 weeks of clinical experience. You should expect to be working roughly a 40-hour week whilst on placement.

All clinical placement modules are organised on the student's behalf by the clinical co-ordination team. This allows us to provide you with a balanced clinical experience both in terms of the specialties/patient groups you have worked with and the range of health care setting you have worked in. It is important that you are exposed to a variety of health settings, which are reflective of current clinical practice.

We are sympathetic to your needs when we assign clinical placements. However, we are unable to guarantee that any student will be located close to their home or term-time address and you may have to commute or live away from home for the duration of a placement or two. We do try to give special consideration to students whose personal circumstances fall within specified criteria, ie they have young children, are a main carer, or have a declared disability etc.

Teaching

A mix of teaching/learning approaches are used including: classroom based learning, problem/evidence-based learning, peer-assisted learning, clinical practice learning, independent learning, e-learning, assimilated learning in clinical labs, and the use of trained teaching associates for intimate examinations. Emphasis will be placed on active student participation, reflection and learning.

As a Physician Associate MSc student we expect you to come to us with specific academic skills and abilities. Your learning will rapidly become self-directed. We will build upon your ability to perform literature searches and critically appraise the evidence base and so prepare you for your commitment to continued professional development and lifelong learning after qualifying.

Assessment

Assessments will include single best answer/multiple choice questions papers and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) to begin early preparation for the National Examination. Other assessments will include written assignments, oral presentations, reflection papers, and a portfolio of evidence.

All modules must be passed in order to proceed through the course. Normally students will have two attempts at passing each assessment.

Structure

The Postgraduate Certificate in Therapeutic Prescribing for Optometrists consists of three taught modules of 20 credits each. The modules are taught principally using distance learning: A series of articles (on the diagnosis and management of relevant eye conditions as well as on the principles of medical prescribing), webinars in which cases are discussed and online lectures. Contact days (one session of two days per module) enable clinical hands-on workshops and face to face case discussions.

Upon completion of the third module, a clinical placement is required and the passing of a final exam set by the College of Optometrists for registration for candidates who are aiming for 'Independent Prescriber' registration (IP) with the GOC. For international candidates not wishing to register their qualification in the UK, a clinical placement is not mandatory. In line with other UK courses, the placement is not part of the University provision.

Credits accumulated in this course can be used in the future for further study towards Masters-level qualifications.

The programme will be held over 1 year and 6 months, with typically 20 credits being studied each semester. The academic semesters are defined by the entry points for the postgraduate taught programmes:

Assessment

A range of assessment methods will be used on the programme in order to reflect the high level of decision making skills and knowledge required for advanced clinical care in optometry.
The programme utilises a combination of formative and summative assessment in all modules, where the assessment tasks are aligned with learning outcomes.

Students on this programme will be provided with an assessment guide which includes marking outlines. For case based learning, you can take self-directed formative assessment prior to taking the marked elements.

You are required to submit case records in every module. You have the opportunity to submit a formative case record to receive detailed feedback prior to submitting your summative report.  Timed, written examinations allow assessment of knowledge and skills. All modules require some participation in online discussions to optimise learning – this is particularly important to draw distance learners together and provide a support peer network, at the same time as improving communication skills.

This intensive programme runs over 45 weeks per year, for two years. Your time on the course will be balanced between campus-based study and clinical practice.

The course begins in September. You will be assessed through essays, exams, practical reports, presentations and your professional development portfolio.

Facilities

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Podiatrists engage with patient care in a wide range of practices from independent work in the community or private practice to multidisciplinary work in a hospital setting. The scope of podiatry practice varies from general foot care (nail, callus, corns) to musculoskeletal care (for example, tendinopathy, provision of insoles, orthoses and footwear), minor surgery (for example, toenail removal) and wound care (for exampe, diabetic foot ulcers).

With further study and extensive training, graduates can train to become a podiatric surgeon, who is allowed to perform the surgical treatment of the foot and its associated structures.

Objectives

City’s Medical Ultrasound course offers flexible study options for healthcare professionals undertaking obstetrics, gynaecology and / or abdominal ultrasound training and for those wishing to develop their skills further using work based learning options.

Our expert staff provide a supportive environment, encouraging students to develop their academic abilities and clinical skills in preparation for working as a sonographer. Students learn a range of subjects to enable them to explore the underpinning knowledge of safe, effective and evidence-based ultrasound practice, with which to help them develop clinical skills in their own department. The supervisor must attend supervisor training and provide regular updates on your clinical progress to the clinical co-ordinator.

Academic facilities

The ultrasound clinical skills suite is equipped with a real-time ultrasound machine and simulators. The facilities are used for tutorials, self-directed study and formative monitoring of clinical skills.

Students have access to the MedaPhor simulator during the working week and remote cloud based access to tutorials and resources.

Using a flipped classroom approach to teaching and learning ensure that a range of online lectures are available for learning and revision.

Teaching and learning

A blended learning approach is used: linking academic theory to clinical practice via work-based learning; formal key note lectures; seminars; film viewing tutorials; demonstrations/workshops; e-learning; shared learning; self-directed study and online case discussions. Participation in the learning is an essential component of the course.

The programme team consists of academic staff, many of whom are still practicing clinically. Guest lecturers are invited to share expert knowledge on a range of topics, such as fetal cardiology, fetal medicine and contrast ultrasound.

The department’s academic staff are highly regarded across the institution, with our current programme director, Gill Harrison, winning the institution's prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Activities include online lectures and quizzes, lectures, tutorials, workshops and skills suite activities, group activities and group work, games and online case discussions.

A variety of assessment methods are used to cater for a range of learning styles and provide a link between theory and practice. Assessment methods include objective structured examinations, online case discussions, oral and/or poster presentations, written assignments, clinical portfolio and clinical competency assessments.

Modules

As a student on the Medical Ultrasound course you will learn the underpinning theory of ultrasound production, safe and effective practice, normal and abnormal ultrasound appearances and associated imaging pathways.

You will be able to select from a number of clinical options including obstetrics, gynaecology and / or abdominal ultrasound. Additional clinical areas can be studied via work-based learning modules, if appropriate clinical support is available within the students' clinical department. The course is also designed to develop transferable skills to support clinical practice development.

Modules will take place over one or two days per week, depending on the selected module options. The time in lectures varies, dependent on the nature of the module.

Core modules - core modules and specific named clinical modules have a blended learning approach, with online lectures, online quizzes and discussions supported by lectures, tutorials and workshops. The average contact time per module is approximately 30 to 35 hours.
-Fundamental Principles of Ultrasound Practice (15 credits)
-Developing Advanced Practice (15 credits)

Students progressing to MSc must undertake:
-Foundations in Research Methods and Applied Data Analysis module (15 credits)
-Dissertation module (60 credits)

Elective modules - students can then select a range of clinical modules such as:

-Gynaecology Ultrasound (15 credits)
-Abdominal Ultrasound (30 credits)

You must gain 60 credits for a Postgraduate Certificate and 120 credits for a Postgraduate Diploma. The most common route is for students to take the two core modules and 45 credits of clinical modules in year 1. For example:

-Obstetric Ultrasound (30 credits)

Modules are spread throughout one to three terms in year 1.

In year two many students undertake the remaining 45 credits in term 1 (September to December), with a view to completing the PgDip in 18 months. Modules are often:

-Work Based Learning in Practice 2 (includes clinical areas such as early pregnancy, small parts, DVT scanning

Students progressing to MSc the begin the dissertation module.

Some students take a short break of 6 months between completing the PgDip and starting the MSc. The maximum registration period is 5 years.

Career prospects

On completion of a postgraduate certificate or diploma you can apply for jobs as an autonomous practitioner, working in the NHS or private practice. Many of our graduates have become advanced practitioners, developing additional skills during their career, whilst others have travelled to overseas to enhance their careers.

MSc graduates have also become managers of ultrasound departments, leading service change and developing services to improve patient care. A number of graduates have developed their role in specialist areas, where they undertake research and training and engage in dissemination of their work at national and international conferences and in peer review publications. Some of our graduates return to provide keynote lectures to future generations of ultrasound students or even take on the role of Programme Director running ultrasound programmes.

You can also become an independent practitioner, setting up your own company, providing services to local populations or travel the world and experience different ways of working. Most sonographers are employed at band seven in the NHS.

Registered dietitians are qualified health professionals who assess diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems both at individual and population level. Dietitians use the most up to date research on diet and health which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.

This course is designed for pre-registration training in Dietetics. It is not aimed at qualified dietitians wishing to take a masters degree. Qualified dietitians are encouraged to apply for the MSc Human Nutrition.

This course is an intensive course designed to provide a scientific base in the study of food and nutrition and the effect of diet and health on wellbeing. On completion of this course graduate dietitians will also have advanced research skills having completed an independent reasearch project as part of this degree.

- Format and assessment -

This course provides study of core modules in human nutrition and dietetics and includes two clinical placement blocks. Year 1 semester 1 (60 credits) and 2 (75 credits) are taught modules in core subjects. Year 1 semester 3 students undertake Human Nutrition Masters research project which is an integral part of the programme where students undertake an independent research project. Clinical placement modules are undertaken in year 2 and are generally within a hospital and/or community setting. Placements are predominantly in Northern Ireland with consolidation tutorials at University between placements. Successful students will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for Registration as a dietitian or apply to CORU for validation of qualification to practice as a dietitian in the Republic of Ireland.

This course is designed for experienced artists and professionals who have worked within a clinical setting and would like to build a rewarding career as an art psychotherapist.

You will be taught by leading experts who will equip you with the skills, experience, and confidence to work as an art psychotherapist in challenging, yet rewarding environments. Our graduating students are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Registered practitioners work in a variety of different settings including psychiatric hospitals, social services departments, special education, prisons and the voluntary sector.

Our comprehensive programme is divided into three areas covering theory, experiential learning and work placement experience. The theoretical aspect covers child developmental and psychodynamic principles alongside art therapy theory and Jungian analytical psychology. This perspective is located within the larger field of analytical psychotherapy and provides you with an in-depth theoretical underpinning that informs clinical practice.

A vital part of the programme is a supervised clinical placement which allows you to complete one hundred mandatory days of practice during your training. Placements are available in a variety of settings that include mental health (both in the NHS and other psychiatric hospitals and day centres), disabilities services or in hospitals or social services, special education, or a range of other settings.

Content

The course is divided into three distinct areas; theory, which will develop your understanding as it relates to clinical practice, experiential learning where you will engage in art therapeutic processes to develop an understanding of the discipline from the inside while developing your identity as an artist, and lastly, a work placement. You will also get the opportunity to collaborate with the other students within the arts and play therapies in workshops and shared modules.

Our full-time course starts with an intensive week followed by two taught days, two further days of clinical placement and one day for studio practice per week. The part-time route starts with an intensive week followed by one day per week in University and a minimum of one further day on clinical placement. You will need to complete one hundred days of supervised clinical practice over the duration of the programme. You will also attend weekly personal therapy which is compulsory to become a professional registered practitioner.
