Our MSc in Clinical Biochemistry will give you a thorough grounding in a discipline that deals with the clinical analysis of body fluids and other biological material to aid the diagnosis, therapy and monitoring of diseases.
Clinical biochemists are typically clinical scientists who work in hospital laboratories providing advice and interpretation of analytical results to other healthcare professionals such as clinicians, general practitioners and nurses.
They are also involved in the development of new analytical methods and improvement of clinical services, including quality assurance and audit.
Through this MSc, you will gain a core knowledge and understanding of the normal physiology and pathophysiology of the major organs and endocrine systems, as well as more specialist areas such as paediatric biochemistry and drug monitoring.
You will also develop a core knowledge and understanding of clinical disorders and how biochemical parameters and laboratory methods are used for the investigation, diagnosis and management of patients.

Professional teaching and learning
Most of the course is taught by NHS professionals working in the field of clinical biochemistry. You will also learn alongside students from a variety of health science backgrounds within pathology, helping you to integrate within a health service laboratory team in the future.
We use a range of teaching and learning methodologies throughout the course, including lectures, tutorials, workshops and interactive clinical case tutorials using mobile technology and iPads. Some of these will be delivered online.

We will assess your progress using a range of formative and summative assessments, such as MCQs, ECQs, written and verbal presentations.

Successful completion of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice will prepare you to seek an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) post or if already employed as a trainee ACP, to formalise this post with a nationally recognised academic qualification. Successful completion also provides the practitioner with the skill set to take on a more strategic leadership role within a secondary or primary health care setting.

Clinical exercise physiology is an emerging discipline and this MSc offers you chance to carry out progressive research to further advance the field. Students are supported throughout by teaching staff active in research that is critical to our understanding of the subject.
The course is designed for a wide variety of groups, including sports and exercise science graduates, personal trainers and health workers, including nurses and physiotherapists. Students gain an understanding of the science behind clinical exercise physiology and develop an extensive range of laboratory skills.
We offer opportunities to apply the scientific knowledge you learn to real life settings and students have the option of undertaking work placements with local health services. We have strong links with the NHS and the City Healthcare Partnership.
The University also has links with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences giving you the opportunity to work with national and international leaders in the field.
Students will undertake a significant research project which they will deliver to an end-of-year postgraduate conference.
The programme is available at postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and masters level. The MSc has been designed to allow flexible study to enable professionals to continue working.
The course combines theory and practice to focus on advanced exercise physiology, clinical exercise testing and training, exercise prescription, pathophysiology of disease and exercise adherence. It includes phlebotomy, submaximal exercise testing and electrocardiography.
Students can complete a placement with one of our regional network clinical healthcare providers. Each student will undertake a significant research project delivered to an end of year postgraduate conference.

This programme is designed to help embed the theories and practice of exercise physiology in health workers.
Many people undertaking this programme of study may already work for the health service or within the sports industry. For these students, the course will strengthen your CV and enable further professional development as you become an expert in your field. People who do not already work in the sector may seek employment within the NHS, or for private healthcare providers, including BUPA and Nuffield Health, or as sports rehabilitators.
Our three-year MSc (Clin) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course enables dentists to train in the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.
All units are based on the speciality of oral surgery, but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. You will undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. You will also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery and attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.
The clinical component of the course consists of units covering surgical basic sciences, reflective oral surgery practices, dental tissues, bone disease and injury, soft tissues, and salivary tissue, pain and the temporomandibular joint.
You will attend weekly interactive seminars led by senior staff and invited guest speakers. Some of these have actor patients present to allow you to rehearse your clinical skills.
If you study the full three-year MSc, you will also attend external teaching events such as residential blocks for basic science applied to surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
You will become eligible to sit the Royal College of Surgeons examinations for Membership in Oral Surgery on completion of this MSc course.

Assessment is by essay and SBAs throughout the course and related to the taught units. You will also maintain a clinical surgical logbook and undertake a clinical competency test. There is also an oral examination.
Research Methods Component (15 credits): The aim is to equip you with skills related to design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically-related research.
Biostatistics component (15 credits): This unit aims to equip you with skills in data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.
Specialist Clinical Component: The aim of this component is to give you an understanding of the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients.

MSc courses are designed for dental practitioners who wish to further their knowledge of surgery and are a useful foundation for specialist training in this field.
The three year course provides specialist oral surgery clinical training.
This well-established and highly competitive MSc provides students with specialist training in the basic scientific principles of modern neuroscience, and in the application of these principles to the understanding of a wide variety of neurological disorders. Students benefit from studying in an internationally renowned and research-intensive environment at the UCL Institute of Neurology.
Participants gain knowledge of the clinical features and scientific basis of both common and unusual neurological disorders including a study of: genetics of CNS disorders; brain metabolism, neurotransmitters and neurodegeneration; autoimmune disease and repair mechanisms; epilepsy; nociception and pain; motor control; basal ganglia/movement disorders; hearing, balance, vision and eye-movements; cognition and dementia.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of five core modules (90 credits), either a library project or two optional modules (30 credits) and a research project (60 credits).

All students undertake an independent research project, which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through basic science and clinical lectures, and practical and interactive workshops. Lectures are supported by audio-visual aids and supplementary materials including handouts, reading lists and references to original papers. Assessment is through unseen and multiple-choice examination, essay, library project (if applicable), dissertation and oral examination.
All students will have the opportunity to attend lectures and meetings in the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Some students will have the opportunity to undertake clinical research projects.
International Students will bear any costs incurred in acquiring certification equivalent to DBS in their home country.
