The MSc Clinical Ophthalmology and Vision Research (COVR) is designed to provide eye care professionals with enhanced knowledge and skills in clinical decision-making as the basis for the safe and effective management of a wide range of ocular conditions.

Primary eye care is rapidly expanding to include diagnosing and treating ocular disease in close collaboration with secondary and tertiary care providers. For optometrists, these new roles are in addition to their traditional role of examining eyes and determining the refractive prescription.

The management of eye conditions is normally carried out either independently or in partnership with medical practitioners. These new roles involve taking on greater responsibilities, and require additional specialised academic training.

Depending on professional requirements and personal interest, you can tailor your MSc according to speciality, leading to a named degree on completion of the dissertation:

Programme Structure

The programmes use a modular structure, including lectures and tutorials in trimesters A and B, and clinical training and Research Project over trimesters A, B and C.

All three programmes consist of core modules, which are compulsory and must be taken by all students, and optional modules, which can be chosen based on personal interest and professional requirement. A substantial component of each programme is the research project, which makes up a third of the programme.

Assessment

A range of assessment methods will be used including formal exams, case reports, oral presentations and clinical assessments as well as assessment of the research project/MSc dissertation.

The one-year Clinical Ophthalmology MSc will enhance your knowledge of common ocular diseases, ophthalmic surgical and laser procedures, clinical anatomy and ocular therapeutics. You will develop analytical skills for solving clinical cases and evaluating published research, and gain valuable research experience through the opportunity to undertake a clinical library-based dissertation.

Degree information

Students on this programme will observe the diagnosis and management of a wide range of ocular diseases. Delivered by experienced clinicians and researchers, students will gain an understanding of clinical assessments and disease processes in the eye, imaging modalities, treatments and side-effects. Additional skills acquired are critical evaluation of scientific literature, research skills and the exposure to novel treatment strategies.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits over one year. The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, flexible three years) is offered. A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits, flexible two years) is offered.

This new two year part-time Masters programme, taught entirely online, is jointly offered by the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and leads to the degree of Master of Surgery (ChM). It has been developed with the support of NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

The ChM is designed to support advanced ophthalmology trainees in the UK and internationally through a curriculum which recognises their subspecialist ophthalmic interests in preparation for exit examination and hospital-based practice.

Our programmes are aligned with the curricula of both the FRCSEd and FRCOphth examinations in the United Kingdom and Ireland, making these degrees very attractive to domestic and international students.

The ChM provides advanced training for medical and surgical ophthalmologists preparing for the fellowship examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) in the UK and Ireland and those approaching consultancy. On completion of this programme students will be able to:

The programme runs on a semester basis over 2 years and involves approximately 10-15 hours of study each week in a flexible, modular manner.

The programme is delivered using a purpose-built learning environment that supports a variety of learning styles, and allows students flexibility in their study patterns.

Core, compulsory modules in each area of clinical ophthalmology are aligned to the curricula of the FRCSEd and FRCOphth. These are taught and assessed using a clinical problem-based approach, supported by systems-based review of the course material. Knowledge and understanding will be assessed with a formal MCQ exam designed to replicate the trainees' upcoming exit exams.

Academic modules (core and specialist) allow the student to explore research and teaching methodology, as well as develop skills which ensure an ability to analyse published evidence and explore interactive and written clinical communication skills. Students are required to complete an e-dissertation involving an academic critique in an appropriate subspecialty area of work, such as that resulting from a publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Teaching and learning

The course has two different pathways:

The six units are Research Methods, Cornea, Contact Lens, Vascular Disease, Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma.

In each of the units, learning will be based on a series of formal lectures on topics relating to ocular disease and treatments, and a series of more informal tutorials on current research. You will receive copies of presentations and direction to relevant literature for personal study.

The theme of regenerative medicine and the teaching of practical skills through simulation runs through each of the specialist pathways and modules.

Orthopaedics and Regenerative Medicine

The specialist surgical field of orthopaedics has been central in the use of regenerative medicine. The focus in modern orthopaedics is changing as research exposes ever greater knowledge widening the spectrum of therapeutic options encompassing reconstruction, regeneration and substitution (Kim, S-J. and Shetty, A.A., 2011; Shetty, A.A. and Kim, S-J., 2013; Kim, J-M., Hans, J.R. and Shetty, A.A., 2014).

Research methods, studies in regenerative medicine and other emerging technologies feature poorly in the standard curriculum of the orthopaedic trainee. This limits the quality of research output, reduces the potential for innovation and slows the rates of adoption of transformative treatments for patients, while leaving the surgeon unable to critically evaluate new treatments.

This programme targets this deficiency with a strong emphasis on research methodology and critical analysis that is based on a platform formed of in-depth scientific knowledge and proven by translation into clinical practice.

Otorhinolaryngology

Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat surgery – ENT) is a diverse surgical specialty that involves the management of both children and adults. In contrast to other surgical specialties the management of a significant number of conditions requires a non-surgical approach. An understanding of the pathogenesis and progression of pathology is essential. This surgical specialty is rapidly evolving. Significant progress has been made through regenerative medicine and technology, some locally through mobile platforms.

Entry into Otorhinolaryngology is competitive. This is often despite the fact that whilst at University many medical students may have had little, if any, formal training in ENT. Some junior trainees entering the specialty have had limited exposure which may affect their decision making.

The MCh in Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) course aims to prepare a trainee to meet the challenges of the current and future challenges in Otorhinolaryngology. It provides an evidence based approach for the management of patients, and provides a foundation for those who will eventually undertake formal exit examinations in this specialty.

Urology

Urology is a surgical specialty dealing with the problems associated with the urinary tract and it deals with cancer, non-cancer, functional problems and diseases (Khan, F., Mahmalji, W., Sriprasad, S. and Madaan, S., 2013). In urology many problems can be managed with medications (for example treating erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms have become largely by pharmaceutical agents) and this underpins the importance of understanding the basic science and molecular biology as applied to the specialty.

This surgical field is constantly evolving with technology being the main driver. Improvements have been made through lasers, optics, gadgets and robotics (Jeong, Kumar and Menon, 2016). Regenerative medicine is fast evolving in urology. The architectural simplicity of hollow structures (such as bladder) and tubes (such as the ureters and urethra) make them particularly amenable.

Despite the fact that many medical students may not have had a urology placement during their training (Derbyshire and Flynn, 2011) the specialty is very much sought after. Getting into urological training is very competitive. Doctors typically undertake research, obtain higher degrees and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals in order to advance their surgical training. A MCh in Surgery (Urology) will therefore be significantly valuable to you for not only your professional knowledge and skills but also to help you reach your goals of becoming a Consultant.

The course aims to foster advanced knowledge in clinical issues for optometrists, with an emphasis on how research informs practice and the evolution of eye care services and capabilities. The programme recognises and incorporates Professional Certificates from the College of Optometrists. Modules have been designed with contributions from guest experts from ophthalmology, clinicians from hospital settings and other specialists. A number of CET points are available for optometrists undertaking these modules.

The MSc course is designed and structured so you will have the opportunity to choose a particular area of study that interests you, building from a series of Professional certificates and then going on to study ophthalmic public health and advanced retinal imaging or choosing to undertake the Theory of Independent prescribing for optometrists The skills of self-motivation, independent learning, problem solving and developing and communicating scientific arguments are encouraged and developed through a programme which emphasizes critical thinking and discussion of issues through online media.

Students may not wish to undertake the whole MSc (180 credits), and there are options to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCERT), which amounts to 60 credits, or a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDIP), at 120 credits.

For those completing the MSc programme, a research project will be undertaken by the student in an area of their choosing with support and guidance from an academic supervisor. In addition, another member of staff will coordinate this module and provide generic support. This project will be a significant and novel piece of research.

This modular postgraduate course is designed to enable fully qualified optometrists to gain Additional Supply or Independent Prescriber status. The course consists of three modules held over one year. Each of the three modules carries 20 postgraduate credits. These credits count towards further postgraduate qualifications such as the MSc Clinical Ophthalmology & Vision Research.

Programme Description

In Scotland, optometrists have recently been granted independent prescribing rights, allowing them to treat a range of common ocular conditions independently. This represents a significant milestone in the development of the scope of optometric practice and puts Scottish optometry and Scottish optometric education at the forefront in Europe.

This programme provides qualified optometrists (UK-based and international) with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge ion the diagnosis and management of common eye disorders and to subsequently gain the right to prescribe medications for these conditions independently (this may vary for international students according to respective national legal regulations).

The course consists of three taught modules at Glasgow Caledonian University, which are complemented by a distance-learning component. A practical placement and a passing of a final exam set by the College of Optometrists are (required for registration of the qualification with the GOC.

All University-based modules are compact weekend sessions (one per module), consisting of lectures and clinical hands-on workshops.

For the distance-learning component, a series of articles on diagnosis and management of relevant eye conditions as well as on principles of medical prescribing will be made available. Upon completion of Module 3, a clinical placement is required for candidates who are aiming for 'Independent Prescriber' registration (IP) with the GOC. For international candidates not wishing to register their qualification in the UK, a clinical placement is not mandatory.

Credits accumulated in this course can be used in the future for further study towards Master-level qualifications.
