Description

The Clinical Nursing MSc course is a flexible study pathway that builds on your existing clinical experience and skills, enabling you to lead and support the development and subsequent delivery of evidence-based practice.

Initially, you will undertake modules in Measurement and Evaluation for Healthcare Practice, Evidence-based Decision Making in Healthcare, as well as modules covering Advanced Assessment Skills for Non-medical Prescribers and Developing Professional Leadership. You will then have the freedom to choose from a range of additional optional modules to reflect your choice of research pathway. You will complete the course in one year, studying September to September, taking modules totalling 180 credits, with 60 credits coming from a dissertation of around 15,000 words. The programme also includes a 10-day period of specially arranged clinical observation in the UK.

The programme also includes 10 days of supervised practice, personalised to the student’s needs. The placement takes place within one of the university’s partner healthcare organisations and will focus on developing competences appropriate to the particular clinical setting. 

Teaching

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and self study.

Contact time is based on 24 academic weeks, whereas self-study time is based on 31 academic weeks. Typically, one credit equates to ten hours of work.  

Location

The degree programme is delivered across the four King’s College London campuses. This includes three Thames-side campuses (Waterloo, St Thomas’ and Guy’s) and the Denmark Hill Campus in South London. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary depending on the optional modules you select.

Course purpose

The aim of this programme is to enable students who are qualified healthcare practitioners to acquire advanced understanding, knowledge and skills to deliver, manage, develop and research healthcare practice and education in a setting outside the UK.

Course format and assessment

You are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations. This can include written assignments such as essays, portfolios and dissertations. In addition, some modules will require you to undertake a presentation as part of the module assessment. A small number of modules are assessed by an unseen written examination or a computer-based assessment.

Regulating body

King’s College is regulated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Career destinations

Students completing this programme would be expected to work in specialised and autonomous roles in clinical practice and research; this includes working in a variety of clinical care settings including hospitals and the community. Other areas of employment would include educational roles in clinical and university settings and roles in governmental departments developing policy and governmental initiatives. This programme also may provide a pathway towards more advanced academic study ie MPhil or PhD.

One of the greatest challenges facing nursing today is to build on its essence as a caring profession, while incorporating new technologies, ideas and approaches to healthcare. Our MSc Clinical Nursing course is designed to meet the needs of graduates who are working in a range of roles and settings in the fast-changing world of health service provision. It's ideal for registered nurses who wish to develop their careers.

The course is aimed both for those who want to focus on a particular clinical speciality and for those that are still deciding on a clinical pathway. There are a range of optional modules to choose from which will be tailored to the needs of the student. They will be taught in such a way that the whole care of the service user can be effectively delivered within the context of the team.

Entry requirements

A first degree, with honours, at a minimum final classification of Lower Second (2:2) or equivalent.

A period of one year post-qualifying consolidation
Registration with the NMC regulatory body
Current employment in an appropriate role
Recommendation to undertake the course by their manager/education liaison manger as appropriate.

If English is not your first language you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 7.0 with no element lower than 7.0 ( Academic level) or equivalent English Language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Adult) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Adult) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Adult) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

The MSc Nursing (Adult) is made up of five modules:

Course Aims

The course has been designed to produce specialist community nursing practitioners who are safe, competent, and professional, to lead district nursing in a community nursing setting. A new vision developed for District Nursing (DH 2013) Care in local communities: a new vision and model for district nursing will underpin the content and delivery of the pathway with a focus on 'Compassion in Practice' underpinning the new model focussing on:
- Population and case load management
- Support and care for patients who are unwell, recevoering at home and at end of life
- Support and care for independence

The aim of this programme is to support the development and enhancement of essential knowledge and skills in the registered practitioner to equip them for a career in specialist community nursing. This will be actualised through building upon the theoretical and clinical basis of their specialised area of practice, through delivery of a cohertent programme of study.

The District Nursing pathway will have a contemporary focus and is designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards for Specialist Education and Practice (UKCC 2001).

The programme will support students in applying their skills of critical reflection to enhance their professional, personal and academic development. It will encourage the development of sound District Nursing practice based on the critical application of research and evidence and will introduce students to theories and practice of leadership and partnership working.

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme.

Completing your Masters

The Postgraduate Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting & School Nursing pathways) and the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing pathway) awards – registerable with the NMC – each comprise of six taught modules to meet individual or service requirements in year 1 as a full time student.

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma will lead to the NMC approved specialist and registerable qualification ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)’, ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing)’ or the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing), depending upon the route that the student registers for.

Students who have met the requirements for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma will be eligible to proceed into year 2, onto the Masters’ award – subject to the rules of progression. The award of an MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting or School Nursing) requires successful completion of the Professional Practice dissertation (MSc route 1) or the Faculty dissertation module (MSc route 2), on a part-time basis.

The Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing) programme will share modules with the P.G Dip/MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme. This will enhance Inter-professional learning with other community specialist nurses working in primary care.

The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme and are expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week.

Compulsory modules
Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:

Nurses today need to be able to demonstrate competence in nursing care across the patient’s lifespan. To deliver this, they need to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a dynamic and ever changing health care arena.

Our nursing programme has been written to take account of the key drivers in health care at local, national and international levels and was developed in partnership with our clinical partners, students, service users and carers.

During each year of the programme you will learn alongside colleagues in all fields of nursing, and will work with peers from the MN and the undergraduate nursing programme. The course is designed so that you will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding which gives you specific skills, knowledge and competences to work within a variety of health-care settings. There is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses which keeps you abreast of the current developments within your chosen field of nursing. On completion, this course will support you to become a creative, innovated and dynamic nurse with an excellent grounding in nursing theory and practice.

Year 1 lays the foundations about what the role of the nurse is and introduces you to the Nursing and Midwifery code as well as theories and models of nursing and nursing skills. It also focuses on anatomy and physiology, determinants of health across the life span, communication, compassionate care, and ethics and inter-professional working. You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.

Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. You will undertake a literature review which provides opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience in an area of interest to you.

Overview

The School Nursing pathway reflects the current standards and initiatives for School Nursing, developing public health awareness and the understanding of key health challenges using a social model of health and well-being. The course has a particular in-depth focus on the physical, social and emotional aspects of school-age health and well-being, recognising how these contribute to social capital and life chances.

The programme will support students in applying their skills of critical reflection to enhance their professional, personal and academic development. It will encourage the development of sound School Nursing Practice based on the critical application of research and evidence and will introduce students to theories and practice of leaderhship and partnership-working. Students' clinical placement experience will enable them to gain expertise in the full range of School Nursing skills, through observation and practice supervised by a Practice Teacher.

Course Aims

Completing your Masters

The Postgraduate Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting & School Nursing pathways) and the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing pathway) awards – registerable with the NMC – each comprise of six taught modules to meet individual or service requirements in year 1 as a full time student.

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma will lead to the NMC approved specialist and registerable qualification ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)’, ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing)’ or the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing), depending upon the route that the student registers for.

Students who have met the requirements for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma will be eligible to proceed into year 2, onto the Masters’ award – subject to the rules of progression. The award of an MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting or School Nursing) requires successful completion of the Professional Practice dissertation (MSc route 1) or the Faculty dissertation module (MSc route 2), on a part-time basis.

The Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing) programme will share modules with the P.G Dip/MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme. This will enhance Inter-professional learning with other community specialist nurses working in primary care.

Designed for registered nurses, these programmes will develop your knowledge, skills and professional confidence to integrate theory, practice and research to improve your nursing care and patient outcomes.

Responsive to current demands of practice, our courses will give you a deeper understanding of pathophysiological concepts and current nursing practice issues.

Develop your ability to carry out advanced assessments on patients to improve your clinical reasoning. Enhance your skills in locating, analysing, evaluating and applying information and research to your everyday work.

To study these programmes at the Graduate School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health you must be a registered nurse with a current practising certificate from the Nursing Council of New Zealand. You also need a Bachelor's degree from a New Zealand tertiary institution.

The level at which you study will depend on your previous academic achievements and chosen professional direction.

Workload

As a guide, for each 30-point course you take at the Graduate School, you should allocate around 10 hours per point for self-directed study, research, assessments and attendance at Schools.

If you’re studying full time, you can expect a workload of 40 hours of study time a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing one course per trimester will need to allocate approximately 20 hours of study a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working full time.

How you'll study

Through a blend of research, class work and clinical experience, our academic team will support and work with you throughout your study, both face-to-face and through internet-based technology. You'll study a combination of core and elective courses, with both coursework and thesis-based research options at Master’s level.

Each course is made up of several ‘block schools’, with each block held over one to four days. They're a mix of lectures, tutorials and small group activities that give you time to study and access to staff for advice and guidance.

Held at Wellington Regional Hospital, the schools are a great opportunity for you to network with your peers and other health care experts—to share ideas and strategies for learning, identify areas for change and assess your progress.

Our part-time programme options make it easy for you to learn while you're working. We'll help you integrate academic life with work and family through our flexible delivery models that allow you to learn at home or on campus.

The distance component supported by Blackboard forms part of your courses and supports the development of the content delivered in the School.

Master of Nursing Science

The Master of Nursing Science is made up of two parts. In Part 1, you’ll gain an understanding of applied pathophysiology and develop advanced assessment and clinical reasoning skills. You’ll complete two further courses from an approved range, in an area of specialist practice or other focus of your choice.

After completing Part 1 and with the permission of the head of school, you can begin Part 2 with either a coursework or research focus.

If you choose to focus on coursework, you’ll complete a research review, practice project and further taught courses.

With a research focus, you’ll complete a research methods course and undertake your thesis—an advanced research project that contributes to nursing knowledge.

Nurse prescribing and nurse practitioner pathways

There are also two optional pathways within the Nursing Science programme: the nurse prescribing pathway or the nurse practitioner pathway.

Nurse prescribing pathway

The nurse prescribing pathway gives you the skill set needed for a prescribing role in your practice. You’ll take a set of four core courses including clinical pharmacology and conclude with a Nurse Prescribing practicum (HLTH 529) which will help you prepare for the Nursing Council of New Zealand registration process.

The entry requirement into HLTH 529 is at least a B grade for all prerequisite courses.

The Nursing Council of New Zealand requires that the nurse:

  • be a registered nurse with a current NCNZ practicing certificate
  • have at least three years equivalent full time practice in the clinical area intending to prescribe in, with one year of this in New Zealand
  • work within a multidisciplinary team
  • have the support of a clinical mentor who is a designated authorised prescriber and has experience mentoring
  • have the support from their employer to complete this course and support for ongoing professional development
  • identify a clinical area of practice and have up to date clinical knowledge relevant to this area of practice.

Nurse practitioner pathway

The nurse practitioner pathway has a distinctive structure within the Master of Nursing Science and gives you the knowledge and skills of an advanced health professional.

You will need to complete six core courses and two pre-approved elective courses. Your elective courses must support your development as a nurse practitioner and need to be approved by the programme director.

At least a B grade for all prerequisite courses is required in order to progress to the Nurse Practitioner Practicum (HLTH 531).

The Master of Nursing Science qualification meets the Nursing Council of New Zealand stipulated requirements for Nurse Practitioners.

Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Science

You can complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Science on its own, but after graduating you may wish to apply for admission to the Master of Nursing Science programme. Your postgraduate diploma can be credited towards the Master’s, with exemptions given for the courses you have already completed.

The nurse prescribing pathway can also be completed as part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Science.

Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing Science

You can complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing Science on its own, but after graduating you may wish to apply for admission to the Master of Nursing Science or Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Science programme. The MNSc recognises the nature of contemporary health care delivery in light of the impact of rapidly changing medical and information technologies, consumer demand and government economic and health policies. We have developed the MNSc around four interrelated themes:

The Decker School of Nursing provides excellent preparation in nursing education, scholarship and practice, and offers graduate level programs of study ranging from certificates to the PhD. The Decker School of Nursing graduate nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through June 19, 2019.

In the Master of Science program (MS), students select one of four functional roles to pursue as a clinical nurse specialist, administrator, educator or nurse practitioner. Dual roles are also available for additional credit.

The Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) program is designed to prepare Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists to respond more efficiently to changes in health care delivery and emerging health care needs. The DNP focuses on providing leadership for evidence-based practice, and will incorporate the advanced practice content currently included in the master's program.
