Graduate training is very different from undergraduate courses. It is based on individual needs and abilities, and is designed to help you to think clearly, originally and practically, and to prepare you for leadership in science. We teach our graduate students how to plan and carry out cutting-edge research. Cambridge is an amazing place to learn how to do research. Visiting speakers and collaborators come from all over the world, and there are simply too many seminars for one person to attend! We have a careful system of monitoring the individual progress of each student; everyone has both a principal supervisor and associated advisor, and there are weekly student-led seminars.

Research training within the Department has several essential components, the first and foremost being the research project itself, to which you will make a significant contribution. This will give you experience and training in a variety of experimental and/or clinical research techniques, but will also teach you how to organise research, plan experiments, and read and digest the scientific literature relevant to your research work. Most research groups have weekly or fortnightly meetings in which all members discuss each others work.

However, other skills are also important. You will be required to attend seminars and round-tables, and you will have the opportunity to go to scientific meetings both in the UK and abroad. These bring you into direct contact with prominent and active scientists in your field from around the world.

You will also give scientific talks yourself. Audiences for such talks are often quite large, and the discussion of your paper is often very lively. You will also be expected to attend courses, either directly related to your research (for example, they might teach you a specific skill or expand your theoretical knowledge) or teach you general skills which are important for well-qualified scientist to know (for example, how to write a scientific paper, use databases, or interact with the media). There are a large number of these courses, and many of them are run by the the Graduate School of Life Sciences, but the Department has its own series of seminars and workshops and an annual Spring School, which is focused each year on a different topic.

We expect our graduate students to publish in high quality journals, and nearly all of them do so.

Format

You will be assigned a principal supervisor, whom you should expect to see on a regular basis. The department will also appoint a second supervisor whom you will meet less regularly. Typically the second supervisor provides expertise in a related field.

There is a weekly seminar programme that is given by all graduates students in the department. MPhil students get to present their work towards the end of their course. They receive formal feedback on their presentation from the course director.

All students attend regular laboratory meetings with their research group, have one-to-one meetings with their supervisor and co-supervisor, and give a seminar to the department which is scored by the audience. The Director of Training meets all students at least once a year.

Assessment

The MPhil in Medical Science is examined by dissertation and viva. The dissertation must be no longer than 20,000 words and must satisfy the examiners that the candidate can design and carry out an original investigation, assess and interpret the results obtained, and place the work in the wider perspective of the subject.

The Intensive Master of Clinical Embryology course (MCE) has gained global recognition as a training program for all assisted reproductive technologies (ART), producing high calibre embryologists, with the excellent knowledge and practical skills to eventually work in, and manage, human ART clinics. Your studies will include the foundations of mammalian embryology, detailed assessment of all infertility treatment strategies, the theoretical basis behind embryo production, embryo selection and cryopreservation, focussing on all current and future technologies associated with ART. There are 3 units dedicated to Total Quality Management, Preimplantation Diagnosis and Ethics. Overview

This 12-month, intensive course provides students with the essential postgraduate knowledge and practical skills necessary to contribute competently to human infertility clinical services. Theoretical and practical skills are presented in the broad context of the regulations and the ethical considerations that apply to human IVF, both nationally and internationally, along with the quality control procedures required to ensure maximum success for IVF patients. The guidelines, protocols and regulations that steer and control human infertility services are also presented. In addition to attending lectures and self-directed study, students are required to undertake continual practical skills training and also students will undertake a minor research project. Students will not only be equipped with practical skills required for work in an IVF laboratory but also gain a greater understanding of research applications within the field of reproductive or developmental biology. Research-related tasks contribute to the overall assessment for specific coursework units.

The School of Dental Sciences and COHR

You will spend most of your time within the School of Dental Sciences and the COHR, working within research teams led by experts in their field in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

We combine world-class clinical and research facilities with an open environment where scholars, clinicians and researchers benefit from working side-by-side. Our focus is on multidisciplinary translational research, work that is relevant to real life.

COHR has a particular focus on understanding molecular and cellular mechanisms and translating these into clinical settings. Evaluation of clinical, community and economic strategies to improve public health and inform a wider health agenda is a central research theme. Within COHR there is a Collaborating Centre for the World Health Organization for Nutrition and Oral Health. Research projects are strongly aligned to the Centre's main research themes:

COHR is involved in a number of industrial collaborations. We also work together with the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit to provide planning, design and implementation of clinical trials in oral health.

Delivery

Certain taught elements of the programme are compulsory, eg laboratory safety. Other taught components are agreed between you and your supervisors depending on your skills and the requirements of the research project.

You are expected to work 40 hours per week with an annual holiday entitlement of 35 days, which includes statutory and bank holidays.

Laboratory work needing to be undertaken outside of normal working hours can be arranged with prior agreement. All our research students are encouraged to attend research seminars and events held within COHR, the Faculty of Medical Sciences Graduate School and your relevant Biomedical Research Institute.

The programme provides multidisciplinary training in a range of neuroscience topics, especially those that are relevant to psychiatry and neurology, through three taught compulsory fundamental modules, one taught specialised module (from a choice of seven) and an approximately 20 week research project. Students choosing a research project in the same subject area as their specialised module may graduate with an MSc Neuroscience in that speciality.

- Course purpose -

Neuroscience as a degree subject is still under-represented in the undergraduate sector and, consequently, most students coming onto the programme have degrees in subjects other than neuroscience. The aim of the programme is to extend the students' theoretical knowledge of the neurosciences and to develop, through their chosen research project, the practical skills that they may wish to practise in their future careers. This may be in further full-time study in an academic research environment or employment in an academic, clinical or pharmaceutical organisation.

- Course format and assessment -

Each of the Fundamental modules (A1-A3) is assessed with a written examination and a coursework essay. The Specialised modules are assessed with a written examination and the writing of an abstract to an unseen published paper (presented without the abstract). The research project is assessed by a research report, a laboratory notebook and a poster presentation.

Career prospects

Past students have obtained PhD positions both in the UK and overseas, entered medical school, the pharmaceutical industry, or trained as clinical psychologists; clinicians have obtained clinical research positions.

Assessment is through written examination, MCQ, short case clinical examination, viva voce, continuous assessment and the research dissertation.

Placement
Students are offered the opportunity to undertake a clinical attachment with one or two consultants at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from April to September each year.

The MSc programme in Neurorehabilitation has been designed to encourage reflection, self-reliance and in depth learning, preparing students for the challenges of employment within a changing health and social care system.

Teaching, learning and assessment are designed to ensure that successful students are able to:

Apply academic and key transferable skills.

The taught modules are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week during the two 12-week university teaching terms, with students undertaking the dissertation following successful completion of the modules. Full-time mode of study requires two days per week, while part-time mode of study requires one day per week attendance on campus.

Student learning is supported by web-based resources on Blackboard Learn with provision of lecture and reading links and relevant resources to support learning.

Programme, and module descriptors delineate learning outcomes to ensure clarity and promote the active preparation of students.

The programme is taught by lectures and workshops delivered by experts in various clinical and technical fields of neuroimaging. Distance learning students may spend up to three months in London carrying out the research project and receiving relevant training and mentoring. Alternatively they may carry out an extended systematic review of the literature related to a chosen field within neuroimaging. In exceptional circumstances students may carry out the research project remotely if they are based at a hospital with established research links with Principal Investigators at the UCL Institute of Neurology.

The MSc is a part-time course, spread over two years. During that time you will complete eight modules, providing a comprehensive overview of sleep medicine that is in line with the European Sleep Research Society's teaching and training guidelines. These modules include:

Each module will be assessed by an extended essay, entailing a total of four extended essays submitted every academic year: two at the end of the second and third terms. Throughout the course you will be expected to work on your dissertation, which is the final piece of coursework, to be submitted at the end of the course. This will take the form of a systematic review and a research study design, including ethical considerations and budgeting. To support this process you will also have to complete two modules in research methods.

Pattern of teaching, learning and supervision

The course is designed to give as much flexibility as possible, whilst still providing necessary support and community. Lectures are pre-recorded and available for you to watch in your own time, alongside any relevant reading, case studies and activities.

You will join regular online discussion groups. These are run using conferencing software, allowing you to interact in real-time with classmates and teaching faculty and will typically last one hour. For these sessions you will be expected to prepare short essays and/or presentations for discussion.

For the purposes of the dissertation you will be assigned an academic advisor, who you will meet with as and when necessary. You will also be expected to attend a week-long residential school in person at Oxford. A significant component of the course involves self-directed learning to build on taught materials.
