About this degree

All students will learn the fundamentals of neurological diseases, including stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, headaches, dementia demyelinating, inflammatory and infectious disorders, and neoplasms of CNS.

As well as acquiring skills for neurological examinations and diagnostics that are applicable in day-to-day clinical practice, MSc students also learn about the principles of clinical research.

About the course

Lead academic 2016: Dr Thomas Jenkins

This course, offering practical clinical exposure, enables you to apply the fundamentals of neuroanatomy and physiology to better understand the clinical features of patients with neurological disease and learn how insights from the laboratory are translated into benefits for patients.

In small group teaching sessions and clinics, you’ll have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to patients with neurological disease. In the final term you may take a research option (Route A) or a Clinical Neurology Experiential Learning Module (Route B).

Students opting for Route A will choose from a range of clinical research projects based at SITraN or within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Students opting for Route B will attend additional specialist clinics with patient-centred teaching from experts in the field who will emphasise recent advances in clinical practice.

Our study environment

You’ll be based in teaching hospitals that serve a population of over half a million people and refer a further two million. We also have close links with the University’s other health-related departments.

Our research funding comes from many sources including the NIHR, MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, the Department of Health, EU, and prominent charities such as the Wellcome Trust, ARC, YCR, Cancer Research UK and BHF. Our partners and sponsors include Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Astra Zeneca and Eli Lilly.

How we teach

Classes are kept small (15–20 students) to make sure you get the best possible experience in laboratories and in clinical settings.

Our resources

We have a state-of-the-art biorepository and a £30m stem cell laboratory. The Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) opened in November 2010. We also have microarray, genetics, histology, flow cytometry and high-throughput screening technology, and the latest equipment for bone and oncology research.

At our Clinical Research Facility, you’ll be able to conduct studies with adult patients and volunteers. The Sheffield Children’s Hospital houses a complementary facility for paediatric experimental medical research.

Hepatitis B policy

If your course involves a significant risk of exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissue, you’ll need to complete a course of Hepatitis B immunisation before starting. We conform to national guidelines that are in place to protect patients, health care workers and students.

Core modules

During the autumn and spring terms, you’ll take four taught modules worth 30 credits each: Applied Neuroanatomy and Clinical Neuroscience; Cerebrovascular Disease and Disorders of Consciousness; Neuroinflammation (CNS) and diseases of the PNS; Neurodegeneration.

Complementing the taught modules is a comprehensive programme of clinical demonstrations, integrated learning activities, themed clinics and neuro-anatomy dissection (autumn term) where students will be able to apply the taught theory and further substantiate their understanding of the topic area being studied.

Examples of optional modules

Either a research project (Route A) or a Clinical Neurology Experiential Learning Module (CNELM) (Route B) worth 60 credits is completed in the summer term.

Teaching and assessment

The taught component of the MSc is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical demonstrations and student-led group work. Each of the 30-credit modules is assessed using a formal examination (15 credits) and ongoing assessments during the module (15 credits), including essays and oral presentations.

The research project (Route A) is assessed from the written dissertation and research presentation examination. The CNELM (Route B) is assessed by means of a portfolio (30 credits) and a 6,000-word dissertation (30 credits) on an aspect of the sub-speciality chosen for the module. The portfolio will contain a reflective log, anonymised details of cases seen, and work-based assessments.

Assessment is through written examination, MCQ, short case clinical examination, viva voce, continuous assessment and the research dissertation.

Placement

Students are offered the opportunity to undertake a clinical attachment with one or two consultants at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from April to September each year.

International Students will bear any costs incurred in acquiring certification equivalent to DBS in their home country.

The UCL Division of Psychiatry is pleased to offer this programme focused on clinical practice in mental health and its evidence base. The Clinical Mental Health Sciences MSc integrates biological, psychological and social perspectives on mental health and caters both for psychology graduates and for clinicians wishing to undertake a broad-based, rigorous and flexible higher degree.

About this degree

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of current evidence regarding mental health problems and the interventions provided to address them, as well as enhancing their research skills. A wide range of options from across the School of Life and Medical Sciences at UCL allows students to tailor a programme that fully fits their needs.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of 1–2 core double modules (30–60 credits), 4–6 optional modules (60–90 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits).

A diploma may be awarded to students who complete the equivalent of 8 taught single modules, amounting to 120 credits.

A certificate may be awarded to students who complete the equivalent of 4 taught single modules, amounting to 60 credits.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops, with considerable use of supporting online learning. Assessment methods include one unseen examination, coursework including designing questionnaires and protocols and analysing data, giving talks and presenting posters, and a final report in the format of a journal paper or brief for clinicians or service planners.

Placement

The programme team support students in obtaining volunteer placements in relevant mental health care and research settings, but this is not a formal part of the course and is entirely optional.

For non-clinicians, the programme will be an excellent grounding for clinical training, such as in clinical psychology, or for embarking on a research career in mental health. Many graduates go on to research assistant, clinical support worker or assistant psychologist posts as a first destination. The programme is also intended to prepare students for PhD studies, also a major onward route. For clinicians, this is a great opportunity to gain a higher qualification through a programme based in a leading university department which can be closely tailored to your interests across clinical, research and management fields.

Employability

Students will be taught by leading experts in their fields, will gain a strong clinical understanding of mental health, and will be able to develop their skills in research, service design and evaluation, and writing and presenting. Previous Division of Psychiatry Master’s graduates have been enthusiastic about their career enhancement, both through their programme and the connections they have made through it. We offer to find all students a placement (if they wish) for one day a week in which relevant clinical and/or research experience is obtained. A large proportion of our first cohort of graduates have gone on to paid employment in relevant areas of mental health, especially research assistant, clinical support worker, psychological wellbeing practitioner and assistant psychologist posts. Description

You will gain training in the key scientific and clinical aspects of clinical Neuropsychiatry and related research. The course offers a strong clinical element, including practical experience of clinical assessment and management through clinical placements.

Students will have unrivalled access to international experts (both clinical and non-clinical) across the spectrum of clinical and basic sciences relevant to neuropsychiatry.

This includes:

  • Access to a comprehensive range of neuropsychiatry populations through South London & Maudsley NHS Trust including one of only two national inpatient neuropsychiatry units (and the only one dealing with complex/longstay patients with functional neurological disorders and brain injury).
  • Access to King’s College Hospital specialist services (e.g. stroke, brain injury rehab, Deep Brain Stimulation, non-motor Parkinson’s, epilepsy, motor neurone disease, MS, functional neurological disorders).

About this degree

The programme combines theoretical and practical teaching on both the breadth of, and complexity in conducting clinical research. Topics include clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, research governance, statistics and the fundamental principle for using the correct enabling technologies within the context of medical research and drug development.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

How can mental health problems such as anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and grieving problems best be studied and treated? How can we prevent them from occuring, improve treatment results and prevent relapse? You will address these and similar kinds of questions in the Master’s programme Clinical Psychology. You will acquire and develop fundamental knowledge and skills in evidence-based psychotherapies and become familiar with the research methods in the field of clinical psychology.

Driven by research and clinical experience

The lecturers from this Master’s programme work in clinical practice and/or do state-of-the-art theoretical or applied research at Utrecht University. This integration of science and practice forms the basis of the teaching approach in this programme.

Learn to work in a multidisciplinary way

Clinical psychology is always interacting with other disciplines due to the context in which behavioural and health problems arise. Examples are medicine, biology, neurology, pharmacology, economics, sociology and social psychology. This will therefore be a considerable focus of attention. Some lectures will also be taught by (guest) lecturers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. And finally, you will often work in a multi-disciplinary context during your internship as well. 

International character

The Clinical Psychology Master’s programme will mainly be taught in English. Some skills-oriented tutorials will be taught in English and Dutch. Our programme’s content and context have a strong international character and you will have plenty of opportunity for international orientation (thesis, internship, symposiums). The NIP´s basic certificate in psycho-diagnostics

The clinical Master’s degree offers Dutch-speaking students the opportunity to acquire the NIP’s basic certificate in psycho-diagnostics (BAPD). You can also apply for different postgraduate programmes (Healthcare psychology; in Dutch: GZ-psycholoog) or pursue a PhD position. For international students, formal accreditation needs to take place at an individual level by the national union of psychologists.

About the course

This course is about the relationship between brain function and mechanisms that underpin behaviour.

Computational neuroscience uses data to construct models of brain function. Cognitive neuroscience and human imaging relate function to its underlying neural substrate.

The course includes a long research
project which gives you the chance to carry out an in-depth imaging study. The computational and analytical skills you’ll learn are great preparation for a PhD.

The course takes students from both life sciences and the physical sciences and engineering. Appropriate training is given to ensure all students can master the required skills and complete the course successfully.

For the taught component of the course, students choose one of two options: either a pathway focused on mathematics, computational neuroscience and MR-physics or a pathway focused on ethics, clinical neurology, neuroradiology and neuroanatomy, which includes a practical human brain dissection course.

Where your masters can take you

You’ll develop the skills and knowledge for all sorts of careers. Many of our graduates continue to PhD level. Others work as research associates and assistant psychologists for employers such as universities and the NHS. Throughout your course, you’ll have frequent reviews with your tutor to discuss your learning needs and objectives.
