Who is it for?

Children’s nursing is a challenging and fulfilling profession. As a child nurse you need to be committed and dedicated with the willingness to give time to others with care and compassion. The course combines theoretical study with clinical experience gained at London’s leading hospitals, trusts and community settings. The School's facilities feature an excellent Clinical Skills Centre, including a simulated wards, where you can prepare for your practice experience. Placements

Half of your time as a student will be spent gaining practice experience through laboratory-based simulated practice and through clinical placements in health care settings.

Simulated Practice

Simulated practice is a significant component of your practice learning experience and will provide opportunities for you to rehearse a range of practical nursing skills and enact scenarios in a realistic, but safe simulated environment in our excellent clinical laboratories.

You will be encouraged to explore, experiment and engage in nursing activities with the lecturers. The sessions will help you to understand the rationale and evidence that you will need so you feel safe when providing hands-on care. Through this experience you will develop confidence as you prepare for your practice experience and gain a sense of purpose and belonging to the nursing profession.

Clinical Placements

Clinical placements can take place in a variety of settings such as:
-General Practice (GP) surgeries
-Nurseries
-Special schools
-NHS and independent sector hospitals
-Patients' homes and in community settings.

Placements take place within City's partnership of healthcare providers in Central and North East London who provide you with clinical placements, including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and North Middlesex HNS Trust.

This allows you to become familiar with the needs of local communities and its healthcare providers. Clinical placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional knowledge and skills.

Academic facilities

Facilities at City include the excellent fully equipped Clinical Skills Centre in addition to an interactive Biological Sciences Laboratory.

Many of the clinical practice placements offer the opportunity for students to experience environments where clinical diagnostic tests are performed and in addition operating theatres where surgical procedures are carried out.

-Have a background and expertise in children’s nursing and an up-to-date knowledge of clinical practice.

Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice. The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme and are expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week.

Compulsory modules
Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM001 Relationship Centred Care and Concepts of Biology for Health (Theory)
-HSM101 Engaging in Practice 1 (Practice)

Part Two is 37 weeks and focuses on acute and long term care. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM132 Experiencing Acute Care, Diagnostics and Treatment (Theory)
-HSM201 Engaging in Practice 2 (Practice)
-HSM043 Experiencing Long Term Care, Rehabilitation and Recovery (Theory)

Part Three is 27 weeks and focuses on the development of leaders and managers of care. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM051 Leading and Managing in Professional Practice (Theory)
-HSM301 Engaging in Practice 3 (Practice)
Depending on the RPL Practice claim submitted by students there is a further 500 hours of clinical practice to be completed.

Holidays are not included in the above hours and all modules are compulsory.

Pharmaceutical Medicine is the medical scientific discipline concerned with the discovery, development, evaluation, registration, monitoring and medical aspects of the marketing of medicines for the benefit of patients and the health of the community.

In this rapidly expanding field of medicine there is a need for high quality education programmes that are compliant with the PharmaTrain initiative of the European Commission, but also with the Bologna process. The programmes at King’s will be the first in the UK that meet both of these requirements. Clinical Pharmacology is the study of how drugs influence human physiology and the way the body handles drugs. It is a vital part of the early clinical development of new medicines. The Clinical Science (Medical Physics) programme is accredited by the NHS and provides the academic component of the Scientist Training Programme for medical physics trainees, within the Modernising Scientific Careers framework defined by the UK Department of Health, and offers students the chance to specialise in either radiotherapy physics or radiation safety. This course is flexible in that it offers several entry routes, choices for modular study and appropriate academic targets. Those who have already completed either the BSMS Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (or equivalent, if APL requested) or the BSMS Postgraduate Certificate in Simulation Studies, may enter at Postgraduate Diploma Level. These participants would then successfully complete a further three 20-credit optional modules to achieve a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education (120 M level credits). Normally these modules would be completed part-time within one academic year.

Participants wishing to progress to Masters level must include Module MDM 10 ‘Research Methods & Critical Appraisal’ in their choice of three. A 16000-word Dissertation (as well as a 3000-word draft paper for publication) in the academic field of clinical education completes the Master of Science degree (180 M level credits). This would normally be completed in a further year, but some students with busy NHS jobs find it can take up to two years to complete.

For those who have not yet taken any ‘M Level’ postgraduate study in this area, the normal route would be to take at least two of the the ‘PG Cert Med Ed’ modules in year 1 (MDM 28/140), and then proceed with the PG Diploma/Masters routes in years 2 & 3, as described above.

The format of assessment throughout the course is varied: some modules are assessed by more traditional 3,000 word written assignments, centred on a topic relevant to the student’s own practice or in-depth analyses of specific case studies or significant educational events. Others feature the development of specific educational tools (e.g. on–line learning or simulation-based assessment), focussing on more practical aspects of clinical education. Students will also develop a personal educational portfolio of about 5,000 words using an appropriate national professional standards framework i.e. Health Education Academy (HEA) or Academy of Medical Educators (AoME).The Dissertation module involves a personal research project and is assessed by a 16,000 word thesis plus a draft paper for submission for publication in an appropriate academic journal.

Objectives

The MSc in Clinical Optometry has been designed to provide optometrists with up-to-date research-based and theoretical knowledge of a wide range of fields, particularly in primary care optometry. It is a flexible, taught postgraduate modular based programme, delivered on an intensive three-day modular programme design.

Emphasis is placed on 'shared-care' or 'co-management' of patients with other medical disciplines and the expansion of the optometrist's role in ocular therapeutics. The programme integrates clinical and theoretical knowledge, making extensive use of expert practitioners. It enables optometrists to continue development and accumulation of knowledge and expertise relating to ocular health care and vision science during their professional careers.

The programme provides a range of modules including 15 and 60 credit modules at Master’s level. There is a choice of exit routes a PG Cert and PG Dip level, modules can also be taken as stand-alone Continuing Professional Development courses.

Academic facilities

The Division of Optometry opened a brand-new, purpose-built ophthalmic clinic City Sight in 2015. These state-of-the-art facilities provide a comprehensive range of services and educational resources in vision sciences for our students, researchers and patients.

There will be extensive use of City's Virtual Learning Platform – Moodle for a more interactive learning experience.

Teaching and learning

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including institution-based taught modules; e-learning and work-based learning. Modules are led by experienced practitioners and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive teaching methods. You will learn in large and small multi-disciplinary groups and will be supported and encouraged to participate in independent learning.

The range of teaching methods is wide and includes lectures (face-to-face; on-line), tutorials, advanced clinical training, clinical demonstrations, videos and discussion of clinical scenarios and action learning sets. Discussion forums, interactive seminars, peer reviewing work-based examples and clinically focussed critical reflections via a case review process are also included.

Practical classes and clinical skills laboratories provide opportunities to develop practical skills and demonstrate techniques covered in lectures. Many lectures are delivered by external specialists, giving access to current issues, research and methods in the field.

A three-hour examination is taken 8-10 weeks after the module. Methods of assessment vary between modules, reflecting their differences in structure and content. The modular examinations include any combination of the following:
-A multiple choice question paper (normally including questions from each lecturer on the module)
-Visual recognition and interpretation of clinical signs tests (VRICS) (involving analysis of a series of slides/photographs)
-Patient management case scenarios
-An objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)
-Professional practice portfolio
-Minilabs
-Peer-reviewed publication

Some modules have more than one assessment component and the weighting for each assessment component is outlined clearly within the module specification.

Modules

The programme provides a range of modules which include 15, 30 and 60 credit modules at Master’s level. The programme provides you with a choice of exit routes but modules can also be taken as stand-alone courses.

Each 15 PG credit module includes 150 hours (15 PG credits) in duration with approximately 30% of the study requires attendance at City for face-to-face learning in either lectures/tutorials or workshops.

Depending on the module, you should be aiming to study approximately:20 hours/week if full-time. 4 hours/week if part-time.

The integration of theory and practice within this course will enable you to critically analyse, adapt and modify existing approaches to develop safe and effective physical activity programmes to optimise the health-related fitness of clients.

This course is a brand new course and is unrelated to the course of the same name which is closing after 2016 intake. The first year of entry for this course will be 2017.

The modular programme is offered in two formats: Full-time (12 months) and Part-time (24 months). The course includes 120 credits of taught units and a 60 credit Project. It is also possible to study parts of this course for CPD purposes, such as a single unit (30 credits) or top up a related Postgraduate Diploma to a full MSc.

The units contain vocational elements relevant for providing personalised exercise training for a range of medical conditions, including classroom, exercise laboratory and placement learning. The MSc Clinical Exercise Project unit prepares you for your independent project, where you will plan and implement a service evaluation, research project or enterprise & innovation project in the area of clinical exercise.

Teaching takes place on Thursdays, Fridays and some Saturdays, so attendance on selected weekends is necessary for the vocational training included in some of the units. Placements take place in areas such as Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth and Chichester and are scheduled according to placement provider requirements during the week. Each unit is generally taught over a three week block, however cardiac rehabilitation requires a longer study period.

Careers

Whilst many practitioners will continue to practise in their own health and related professions, this award carries with it the opportunity to develop a more formal role in undergraduate or postgraduate clinical and professional education.

Employability
Launched in 2015/16, this is a new programme for UCL Medical School. However, our taught Master's-level programme, Medical Education, has helped graduates to attain high-level posts as NHS consultants or academics in the university setting. We anticipate that this programme will have similar outcomes and enable graduates to secure educational posts in their own profession and specialties.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Clinical Anatomy (60 M Level credits) consists of three modules, the two core modules are compulsory; Applied Clinical Anatomy 1 worth 15 M Level credits, and Applied Clinical Anatomy 2 worth 30 M Level credits. To facilitate ongoing personal development and make up the required 60 Masters Level credits, the student can choose a further optional module related to the aims of the certificate. Students may transfer their credits to an MSc (Health Sciences) or an MSc (Neuromusculoskeletal Healthcare). There are many Masters Level modules available to choose from within the University.

Course Aims

To promote the acquisition of applied anatomical knowledge and skills and the application of anatomical science.

Course Content

The certificate consists of three modules (two core compulsory plus one option).

- Applied Clinical Anatomy 1 (core) worth 15 M Level credits. This module will cover histology, embryology, identification of prosections, gross anatomy of various systems, radiology, preserving, and embalming. The gross anatomy will be linked to functional and clinical relevance

- Applied Clinical Anatomy 2 (core) worth 30 M Level credits. Through student-led tutorials, theoretical and practical studies including dissections, the student will cover in-depth, the theoretical and practical aspects of knowledge relating to the student’s chosen anatomical focus

- One option module to the value of 15 credits at Masters Level

There are many Masters Level modules available within the Faculty and the wider University. The Academic Year starts in September, and is divided into two semesters; one core module will be available in each semester. This allows the student the freedom to select an optional module within either semester.

Teaching & Assessment

The programme of study will be delivered through block teaching sessions and self-directed study (See individual modular specification for details of hours etc). Teaching format will be lecturers, seminars, discussions, problem-solving sessions, tutorials, and dissections to address theoretical and practical aspects of applied clinical anatomical knowledge. The student is expected to complete at least double the amount of self directed study.

A variety of modes of assessment are offered. For the Applied Clinical Anatomy 1 module – the student can choose their own mode of assessment from the selection given, for example, assignment, presentation or an interactive practical examination. For the Applied Clinical Anatomy 2, the student will present a portfolio of evidence of their experiential learning during the process of exploring in-depth the theoretical and practical aspects of clinical anatomical knowledge relating to the students chosen field of knowledge. This will include a 4000-word assignment, 4 laboratory reports including such activities as dissections, clinical meetings etc, a 2500 word reflective piece demonstrating experiential learning and finally the evidence of experiential learning.

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this post graduate programme.

The delivery format for the course is largely based around seminar, practical, workshop and placement learning to integrate theory into practical sessions. Teaching sessions will include vocational training, seminar and exercise laboratory work, led by leading practitioners in the area of clinical exercise. You will be provided with a personal tutor to assist with academic and pastoral issues.

Graduates of this course possess qualifications to provide exercise in cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation exercise after cancer, exercise after stroke or exercise for falls prevention provided by leadin vocational clinical exercise training providers. Having such a skills-set is important for being employable as an exercise physiologist in diverse multi-disciplinary teams, whilst also presenting the opportunity to work as an exercise entrepreneur as your own exercise service manager.

The objective of the course is to equip students with a strong foundation in the fundamental techniques of clinical and translational research in experimental medicine, applying contemporary research tools to clinically relevant areas of investigation. The bespoke experimental medicine research training will be taught by Cambridge academics and industry, and will incorporate a research project focused experimental medicine. Each student is allocated an individual supervisor, who will provide support throughout the course and help build a customised training programme.

The MPhil includes formal modular teaching in core experimental modules (Statistics, Epidemiology, and Practical Aspects of Clinical Research) as well as specialist modules in Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Drug Development. In addition, all students will have the opportunity to undertake a relevant 12 week research projects with one of our outstanding supervisors, including clinicians across a range of specialties, bio-medical scientists and bio-medical industry partners.

Course detail

Upon successful completion of the MPhil graduates will have developed a strong foundation in the fundamental knowledge and techniques required to enable them to undertake clinical and translational research in experimental medicine. They will be able to apply contemporary research tools to clinically relevant areas of investigation.

The MPhil programme will produce clinical researchers who are competitive in seeking research support and
who are knowledgeable about the complex issues associated with conducting sound clinical research and
trials.

Format

The course consists of core modules in Practical Aspects of Clinical Research, Statistics, Epidemiology, as well as bespoke modules in Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Drug Development timetabled over two terms. Students from both themes (Experimental Medicine and Rare Diseases) will have the opportunity to attend the modules of the other theme.

Students will be allocated mentor groups to work on a group research project; and all students will conduct their own individual supervised 12 week research project for which they will submit a thesis. The course is examined by two sat exams and thesis assessment.

Assessment

Students are expected to submit a thesis with a maximum word count of 15000 words.

Students will sit two exams of 2 hours each. The exams will be multiple choice questions and structured answer questions.

Students are required to present their work to their supervisors lab and a supervisor report is submitted to the programme directors - this is not assessed, but gives an indication of the progress of the student.

The course components are completed by the end of July. However, to complete the course, students will be required to attend a viva in person on a date (to be announced) in late August or early September.

Continuing

Students who are progressing well, have the support of a Principal supervisor, and have the necessary funding, may apply during the year to continue to do a PhD on successful completion of their MPhil. Such students will need to gain a pass mark of 70% or more in the MPhil examination.

The University operates all of its programmes on a modular basis. Two intakes will be offered each year, in April and October and students can enrol with the PgCert/PgDip/MSc as their target award.

​The MSc will allow students to excel in their professional practice. It is an important early step en route to becoming a leader in the field. The course runs over three years (part-time), but for students who wish to stage their development, it is also offered as a one year Postgraduate Certificate or two year Postgraduate Diploma, both of which can be subsequently topped up by returning to the course.

You will be assigned a clinical liaison tutor (CLT) at enrolment who will keep in regular contact with you and visit you in your workplace to undertake assessments. The CLTs main role is to support the you through your studies and help you to demonstrate your competence through a professional practice portfolio.

The MSc level Research Project is undertaken in your workplace under the supervision of a University supervisor, with support from a local mentor, where available.

​The programme is delivered with the support of our Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard), which will provide a range of learning activities to develop your knowledge in clinical pharmacy and related topics. This student-led learning is supported by face-to face study days (nine in year 1 and between five and nine in year 2) as well as two to three virtual workshops in years 1 and 2, supplemented by workplace visits from the student's CLT where work-based assessments will take place.

If you are enrolling on the PgDip or MSc you can complete an Independent Prescribing qualification as part of the programme or take a non-prescribing pathway. The PgDip (Prescribing) or MSc (Prescribing) awards will allow students to apply for Independent Prescribing annotation from the General Pharmaceutical Council (subject to course accreditation by the GPhC).

Veterinary medicine is a rapidly evolving discipline, comprising a wide range of specialist areas. Research in veterinary medicine is directly relevant to the improvement of health and welfare of domestic animal species and the protection of public health.

The R(D)SVS has an international reputation, and its clinical services - Hospital for Small Animals (dog and cat and exotics, zoo and wildlife) and Large Animal Hospital (equine and livestock) - are among the most influential centres for clinical care in the UK and Europe. It is best placed to advance the skills of the sector due to the skills in primary, secondary and tertiary care medicine and surgery, and its extensive research activities in all aspects of veterinary medicine.

Veterinary practitioners are under pressure to maintain high standards of practice while also keeping abreast of the latest developments. In response to the increasing requirement for support in developing advanced clinical skills, this new distance learning programme is aimed primarily, but not exclusively, at veterinarians in practice.

The modular, portfolio approach allows the greatest flexibility to meet the needs of the modern practitioner. The goal is to provide the student with the skills and knowledge required to be highly effective practitioners and to enable them to act as leaders and mentors within the veterinary community.

Online learning

Online learning is aimed at people who want to study for a postgraduate qualification alongside ongoing work or other commitments. You can study at times most convenient to you. Most of our students continue in their employment while they study.

The courses are taught in distance learning mode and are completed entirely online. The teaching is quite varied, including: online lectures, tutorials, specialist external lectures, scientific group discussions, case studies, problem-based learning scenarios, literature based research, computer-assisted learning and quizzes.

Programme structure

The programme is delivered part-time by online distance learning over a minimum period of three years and a maximum period of six years. You may undertake the programme by intermittent study (flexible progression route), accruing credits within a maximum time limit of two years for the Postgraduate Certificate, four years for the Postgraduate Diploma and six years for the MVetSci.

In summary, the completion times are as follows:

PgCert: 12-24 months
PgDip: 24-48 months
MVetSci: 36-72 months

The programme is modular in structure, offering a flexible student-centred approach to the choice of courses studied. You can choose to take a particular species track in the elective course, ie courses focussed on companion animals, exotic zoo and wildlife, equine or production animals. Equally, you can choose to take a mixed-practice approach by selecting courses that meet your individual professional needs. If you choose a particular species track you will exit with a designated MVetSci in Advanced Clinical Practice, eg MVetSci in Advanced Clinical Practice (Companion Animal Medicine). You will have the option to select a final year project or fully-taught route to achieve the MVetSci.

Each year will consist of three 11-week terms structured into two blocks of five weeks of study with a week in between for independent study and reflection. One block of five weeks will equate to 10 credits of course material. This framework is designed to fit in with the part-time nature of the programme, giving you time to reflect on your learning and lessening the impact of the additional requirements that studying will place on the your working life.

We have developed a modular postgraduate programme in clinical drug development designed to give you the necessary academic background and specialist skills needed to carry out clinical drug development in a contract research organisation , pharmaceutical industry or health service environment.

Programme outline
This postgraduate programmes shares a common spine with our Healthcare Research Methods programme, which covers the key areas of expertise needed for a successful clinical research programme.If you choose the Clinical Drug Development programme, your initial modules will concentrate on early drug development.
