The suite of pain management programmes offered by the Department of Anaesthesia, Critical care and Pain Medicine, continues this tradition by integrating current clinical research with high-level academic and professional input.

As a multidimensional phenomenon, it is essential that pain is managed through planned multidisciplinary initiatives and inputs that aim to ease patient suffering and improve quality of life. Through a solid, theoretical understanding of the biological, psychological and social concepts that drive, develop and maintain pain, students will explore the multifaceted nature of pain and its effects. Students will gain an advanced understanding of the specialist area of pain management and will develop the core skills and knowledge required of an advanced pain practitioner.

Each course of the programme is divided into a set of themed sections in which material is presented in a blend of short online lectures, practical case studies, directed readings, podcasts and webinars. This is supplemented by discussion boards that provide directed assessment tasks while input from expert guest lecturers and tutors offer students opportunity for collaborative critical discourse and debate of current issues.

This part-time, fully online programme attracts an international and multi-professional student cohort and offers a unique opportunity to have direct contact with others working in pain management across the world. Within this context, students will gain the knowledge, understanding and evaluative skills to provide advanced clinical care so as to improve outcomes for people living in pain.

Postgraduate Certificate - Level 1 (60 credits)

The Postgraduate Certificate level courses allow students to gain a solid, theoretical understanding of the biological, psychological and social concepts that drive, develop and maintain pain.

Through six core courses covering, assessment and measurement of pain, mechanisms of pain, and the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of pain, students will explore pain's multifaceted and dynamic nature. In the final core course, students will examine selected conditions seen in clinical practice.

Postgraduate Diploma - Level 2 (60 credits)

(not all Level 2 courses will be offered every year) On successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate courses, the 60 credits at Postgraduate Diploma level allow students to select courses that focus on areas of pain management that are congruent with students' career goals and clinical or personal interests.

Through a number of course options, including, but not limited to, courses in cancer pain, medical pain, acute pain, neuropathic pain and pain in ageing populations, students will gain an advanced understanding of key areas in pain management. At this level, students may opt to begin to take courses in the areas of either headache management or veterinary medicine to gain a named PGDip or MSc award.

Master of Science - Level 3 (60 credits)

On the successful completion of 120 credits, students are able to proceed to the Master of Science level of the programme. There are a number of options at this level:

  • Fully taught option – successfully complete 60 credits from the Level 2 courses, or,
  • Successfully complete a written dissertation (60 credits), or,
  • Successfully complete a project (60 credits)

Degree Awards with a Headache or Veterinary Designation?

We also offer Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and Master of Science (MSc) awards in the focussed clinical areas of headache management and veterinary medicine.

Alongside the core pain programme content, students have the option to take a number of courses in specific clinical areas to gain the award of PGDip/MSc Clinical Management of Pain (Headache) or PGDip/MSc Clinical Management of Pain (Veterinary). To gain a named award (i.e. a Headache or Veterinary designation), students must complete at least one third of the credits of the award in the focussed area.

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD)

Postgraduate Professional Development is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course, without the time - or financial - commitment of a full Masters degree, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate. We offer short, focussed, academic credit-bearing courses that provide education on key subjects in pain management.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses through our Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) scheme. These credits are recognised in their own right as postgraduate-level credit, or may be put towards gaining a higher award, such as a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc at the University of Edinburgh or another academic institution.

The DClinDent in Oral Surgery is a three-year, full-time programme which will allow the candidate to achieve specialist-level training in oral surgery, together with a taught professional Doctorate, preparing them for the Speciality examination of Membership in Oral Surgery (MOralSurg) of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (Tricollegiate Edinburgh, Glasgow, England) UK.

The DClinDent aims to provide doctoral level educational opportunities to enable students to develop, consolidate and enhance their range of academic and clinical competencies to enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in oral surgery.

Programme structure

This programme is for dental surgery graduates who wish to extend their knowledge, clinical practice experience and expertise in oral surgery.

The programme will give you theoretical and practical understanding of oral surgery and how it relates to other dental specialities.

The syllabus components are based on the core competencies for oral surgery training as set out by Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC) for Oral Surgery, The Faculty of Dental Surgery The Royal College of Surgeons of England (2014) :

  • extraction of teeth & retained roots/pathology
  • management of associated complications including oro-antral fistula
  • management of odontogenic and all other oral infections
  • management of impacted teeth
  • management of complications
  • peri-radicular surgery
  • dentoalveolar surgery in relation to orthodontic treatment
  • intraoral and labial biopsy techniques
  • treatment of intra-oral benign and cystic lesions of hard and soft tissues
  • management of benign salivary gland disease by intra-oral techniques and familiarity with the diagnosis and treatment of other salivary gland diseases
  • insertion of osseointegrated dental implants including bone augmentation and soft tissue management
  • appropriate pain and anxiety control including the administration of standard conscious sedation techniques
  • management of adults and children as in-patients, including the medically at risk patient
  • management of dento-alveolar trauma and familiarity with the management and treatment of fractures of the jaws and facial skeleton
  • management of oro-facial pain including temporomandibular joint disorders
  • clinical diagnosis of oral cancer and potentially malignant diseases, familiarity with their management and appropriate referral
  • the diagnosis of dentofacial deformity and familiarity with its management and treatment
  • diagnosis of oral mucosal diseases and familiarity with their management and appropriate referral
  • control of cross-infection
  • medico-legal aspects of oral surgery

For Year 1 and Year 2 students, there will be a written exam at the end of each term.

In addition to the above, at the end of Year 2, students will also have oral exams in June and in August/September.

Successful completion of the first two years of the programme will allow students to proceed to Year 3 of the programme. In Year 3, students will present the following:

a) a clinical governance project b) a systematic review of a topic related to Oral Surgery c) two fully documented patient case presentations d) two unseen (diagnostic) cases will also form part of this examination

The third year of the DClinDent programme will be structured over three semesters and during this time the student will be timetabled to four protected academic sessions each week with the remaining time dedicated to primarily independent clinical practice and inter-disciplinary patient management.

Successful completion of the MSc requires a 5,000 to 8,000-word dissertation on a topic that is relevant to the candidate's own clinical practice and has been covered, at least superficially, at some point in the programme. The options for the dissertation will be discussed with each student but can include, where possible, joining clinical research at the UCLH Pain Management Centre, study in-depth of topics, preparing for higher (doctoral) research, etc. Students will have two supervisors and a mentor.

Teaching and learning

This programme is delivered via a specially-designed online learning environment with additional workshops and discussions to support students on the journey towards making a real difference for people living with pain. 

Assessment is based on reflective practice, video presentation, and short written assignments. 


Clinical placement is not a required component of the programme. However, for students wishing to see practice in the UK or specialist pain management practice at UCLH, short clinical placements can be arranged. The Pain Management Centre at UCLH is busy and accommodates a large number students and specialist trainees. Therefore, please consider your goals for any placement in advance.

Our MSc Paediatric Dentistry course will equip you with the advanced academic knowledge and clinical skills required to practice as a specialist in paediatric dentistry.

This is a full-time, three-year master's degree that combines the taught and research elements of the MSc with a mandatory clinical training unit.

You will build up your knowledge of literature in this field, learning from consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry. Taught elements are delivered in lectures, seminars, practical skills sessions and online learning.

You will develop your clinical skills at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital.

Clinical teaching involves close supervision of a personal cohort of patients with a broad range of paediatric dental needs, including those with dental anomalies, trauma and caries, under supervision by hospital specialists and consultants. Clinical training involves attendance at consultant new patient clinics.

Completing this course will prepare you to practice as a specialist paediatric dentist or pursue a clinical academic or research career in this field. You will be eligible to sit the Membership in Paediatric Dentistry tri-collegiate specialty membership examination upon completion of the course.

For the clinical skills component, assessment is through examination of a variety of skills procedures carried out in the skills facility.

For the clinical component, case write-up and presentation, assessment is through marking of both the written component oral presentation of cases and clinical governance projects.

This course will have the majority of its clinical activity in the Paediatric Dental department in the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running in the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital. Clinical teaching will be delivered by consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry.

The dissertation is marked in line with all of our dentistry MSc dissertations.

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Our MRes Experimental Cancer Medicine master's course will give nurses, doctors and clinical researchers the skills needed to work in early phase clinical studies.

You will learn how to master experimental cancer through a combination of traditional teaching and hands-on learning, spending a year as a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie while also taking four structured taught units.

The taught units will see you learn the details of designing and delivering Phase 1 clinical studies, understanding the pre-clinical data required before a clinical programme can commence, and how to optimise early clinical studies to provide evidence for progressing a promising drug into Phase II/III clinical testing.

Alongside the taught elements, you will be allocated to one or more clinical trials that are being conducted by The Christie experimental cancer medicine team. You will have a named trainer and be exposed to tasks required in the setup, delivery, interpretation and audit of a clinical study.

Nursing and physician students will be expected to participate in patient care, including new and follow-on patient clinics, treatment and care-giving episodes with patients.

For clinical trials coordinators, no direct patient contact is envisaged and duties will involve clinical trial setup, protocol amendments, database setup, data entry, costing and billing for clinical research.

You will be able to choose two aspects of your direct clinical trial research experience to write up for your two research projects in a dissertation format. This will give you the skills and knowledge required to critically report medical, scientific and clinically related sciences for peer review.


The primary purpose of the MRes in Experimental Cancer Medicine is to provide you with the opportunity to work within a premier UK Phase 1 cancer clinical trials unit and, through a mix of taught and experiential learning, master the discipline of Experimental Cancer Medicine.

Dr Natalie Cook is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie. She completed a PhD at Cambridge, investigating translational therapeutics and biomarker assay design in pancreatic cancer.

Professor Hughes is Chair of Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Strategic Director of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team at The Christie. He is a member of the research strategy group for Manchester Cancer Research Centre. He serves on the Biomarker evaluation review panel for CRUK grant applications.

Professor Hughes was previously Global Vice-President for early clinical development at AstraZeneca, overseeing around 100 Phase 0/1/2 clinical studies. He was previously Global Vice-President for early phase clinical oncology, having been involved in over 200 early phase clinical studies.

Dr Matthew Krebs is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie.

He has a PhD in circulating biomarkers and postdoctoral experience in single cell and ctDNA molecular profiling. He is Principal Investigator on a portfolio of phase 1 clinical trials and has research interests in clinical development of novel drugs for lung cancer and integration of biomarkers with experimental drug development.

Teaching and learning

Our course is structured around a 2:1 split between clinical-based research projects and taught elements respectively.

Taught course units will predominantly use lectures and workshops.

For the research projects, teaching and learning will take place through one-to-one mentoring from a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team.

The clinical and academic experience of contributors to this course will provide you with an exceptional teaching and learning experience.

How You Study

Blended teaching and learning is used wherever possible in recognition that students on this programme are working professionals and students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning.

As a student on the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice you will be allocated a named Personal Tutor who will endeavour to support you throughout the programme.

Students are expected to nominate a named Clinical Supervisor who will act as a critical friend, teacher, mentor and assessor throughout the programme. This is designed to provide you with a framework of stability and support in order to fully contextualise your learning and role within your professional service area.

This individual may, if appropriate, act as the Designated Medical Practitioner should you undertake the Non-Medical Prescribing certificate as part of your overall Award. The University will provide the opportunity for your nominated Clinical Supervisor and/or Designated Medical Practitioner to undertake training, guidance and ongoing support to help fulfil their role.

Due to the nature of this programme weekly contact hours may vary. Postgraduate level study involves a significant proportion of independent study, exploring the material covered in lectures and seminars. How You Are Assessed

In line with the learning and teaching strategy for the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice, the assessment and feedback strategy is also based upon the pedagogical philosophy of Student as Producer. The work assessed throughout this Award will be topical, current and will endeavour to be relevant to the student’s professional working practices. Assessments have been designed to be robust, innovative and fit for purpose; therefore allowing you the opportunity to demonstrate that you are consistently competent and capable of the role, both academically and in real-life, complex and dynamic service environments.

Assessments will be undertaken by a range of appropriately experienced and competent assessors, including academic staff, medical practitioners and experienced healthcare professionals, and it is through this collaborative and inter-professional assessment process that the University seeks to gain full assurance that the student is fit for practice as an Advanced Practitioner in their clinical service area.

Assessment methods are likely to include, but are not limited to, written assignments, exams, presentations and projects to test theoretical knowledge, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), case based assessments, direct observation of clinical skills and the development of a clinical competence portfolio. Formative assessments will be conducted whenever possible, aiming to prepare you for the assessment process and to provide developmental feedback to support the learning process. Formative assessment activities are integrated into the programme and focus crucially on developing the autonomy and research capacities of students in line with the Student as Producer ethos. This programme orientates internationally qualified dental graduates to that of a UK dental practitioner by providing a comprehensive grounding in six key training areas: basic sciences and their application to modern day dental practice, applied principles of clinical dentistry, clinical skills, communication skills, professionalism, management and leadership.

The course is delivered under three broad headings:

1. Taught
Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Relevant basic sciences including anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology with respect to health and how these are altered in disease states
-Patho-physiological and anatomical basis for clinical signs of oral and craniofacial health and disease
-Relationships between dental disease, population risk factors and the preventative measures

And integrate this knowledge to dental areas through discussions in:

2. Clinical
Students' clinical skills will be augmented through practical, laboratory based sessions using typodont teeth set in a manikin head.

-Operative skills will be taught to ensure students can undertake skilled, competent and safe dental procedures including: cavity design, extra-coronal restorations and non-surgical endodontic treatment.
-Simulated clinical techniques will be undertaken and the student will be introduced to decision making processes leading to tooth loss and replacement and execution of appropriate operative techniques for all stages of planned prosthodontic treatment (excluding bridges and implants) in conjunction, as necessary, with other specialists and technicians.

Students will observe current UK dental practise via clinics in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, paediatrics, prosthodontics, radiology and orthodontics.

Tutoring in Objective Structured Clinical Reasoning Examinations (OSCE) and Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) Exams will be carried out using the advanced facilities in the state of the art dental skills laboratory.

3. Research
The research component consists of a structured literature review and clinical audit report. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Critical appraisal and analysis of scientific and clinical literature
-How clinical audit identifies problems in clinical service and helps formulate solutions
-Appropriate tools for searching the literature (search engines, web-based libraries, electronic documents)

Students will develop the analytical skills to be able to:

-Critically appraise, analyse and evaluate scientific papers and clinical literature applying the principles of evidence based dentistry
-Evaluate evidence of the latest developments in Dentistry
-Communication skills will be developed throughout the taught, clinical and research elements of the course with specific topic presentations during seminars as well as through journal club reports and presentations on dental and clinical governance topics.

The Master of Clinical Education focuses on research and leadership skills. It builds on the foundation laid by the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching and the Graduate Diploma of Clinical Education, allowing you to not only develop and deliver clinical teaching but be involved in leadership and change management in clinical education.

The course work will focus on learning practical leadership skills and the research component will enable you to develop skills in undertaking and critiquing clinical education research.


The Master of Clinical Education hones existing research and leadership skills to an advanced level to create clinical education leaders.

All Australian and international clinical teachers are welcome to apply for the Master of Clinical Education. The course is not available to students who require a student visa to reside and study in Australia. However, the intensive coursework option means that the course is accessible to both interstate and international clinicians.


The Master of Clinical Education is the final step in the series of Excellence in Clinical Teaching (EXCITE) nested award courses. The Masters will enable you to lead others in developing and evaluating educational quality in your organisation. It will also provide a recognised platform of research training from which you could pursue ongoing research at a PhD level.

The Master of Clinical Education provides an opportunity for you to develop recognised expertise and gain valuable insight and experience in clinical education theory, practice and research.

On successful completion, you will be able to:

The MSt is part of the Clinical Medicine Programme, a suite of part-time courses designed to enhance the specialist skills of senior healthcare professionals in training and broaden their understanding in healthcare education, research, leadership and management.

The programme has been developed by Cambridge University Health Partners, the academic health sciences centre, in conjunction with the School of Clinical Medicine and the Institute of Continuing Education, University of Cambridge.

The Intensive Care pathway will be offered for the first time in October 2016. It is expected that further subspecialties will be available in future and will form a broad panel of routes for training in subspecialty clinical medicine.

Aims of the programme:

- Create an international cohort of consultants able to pursue and develop their roles in a rapidly-changing and challenging environment of clinical medicine

- Develop the confidence within these consultants to lead service improvement for safe and high quality patient care, with the required knowledge, skills and capability to have a positive personal impact on the work of others in their clinical team and wider service

- Develop consultants with an understanding of teaching, professional development and assessment in the field of clinical medicine

- Develop consultants with an understanding of research methodologies and ethical considerations relevant to clinical medicine

- Encourage participants to develop as reflective practitioners with the emotional intelligence, resilience and astuteness required to be effective clinical leaders

It is expected that students will be admitted for the MSt degree from the outset and study part-time over two years. You will complete the Postgraduate Certificate modules in year one and the intensive care taught modules in years one and two, with a clinical research project and associated dissertation in year two.

Students will also study the Helmsmanship programme in parallel with the MSt.

Helmsmanship is a unique, two year, non-award bearing course which will help you to develop the non-clinical skills required for consultant-level appointments at tertiary centres. The course is designed to provide personalised comprehensive training in the attributes required to be an effective senior clinician.

It is delivered by Cambridge University Health Partners together with the Judge Business School. The faculty includes clinicians, senior NHS managers, organisational development consultants, Judge Business School academics, and experts from the wider Cambridge community.

The course is practically focussed, developing advanced skills in education, teamworking, leadership and management in an environment which encourages personal development, organisational intelligence, iconoclasm, and resilience. It is delivered in a variety of formats, using innovative tools to engender skills such as consultant level responsibility, development and improvement of clinical and non-clinical services, change management, and the effective supervision of teams and engagement with colleagues.

Helmsmanship is not delivered in any other environment and is designed to fit within the Clinical Medicine Programme at Cambridge.


Students are assessed throughout the taught modules of the programme using a variety of techniques and interrelated strategies including evidence of regular reflection. Demonstration of active participation in the programme will be required. There may also be a requirement for the students to take part in peer review of other students.

With several medical conditions requiring extensive and continuous monitoring and early and accurate diagnosis becoming increasingly desirable, technology for biomedical applications is rapidly becoming one of the key ingredients of today and tomorrow’s medical care.

From miniaturised home diagnostic instruments to therapeutic devices and to large scale hospital imaging and monitoring systems, healthcare is becoming increasingly dependent on technology. This course meets the growing need for biomedical and clinical engineers across the world by focusing on the design of medical devices from conception to application.

One of the few accredited courses of its kind in London, the programme concentrates on the use of biomedical-driven engineering design and technology in healthcare settings so you can approach this multidisciplinary topic from the biological and medical perspective; the technological design and development perspective; and from the perspective of managing the organisation and maintenance of large scale equipment and IT systems in a hospital.

This MSc in Biomedical Engineering with Healthcare Technology Management course has been created in consultation and close collaboration with clinicians, biomedical engineering researchers and medical technology industrial partners. The programme fosters close links with the NHS and internationally-renowned hospitals including St. Bartholomew's (Barts) and the Royal London Hospital and Great Ormond street so that you can gain a comprehensive insight into the applied use and the management of medical technology and apply your knowledge in real-world clinical settings.


In the last few years there have been some limited opportunities for our top students to carry out their projects through placements within hospital-based healthcare technology groups or specialist London-based biomedical technology companies. Placement-based projects are also offered to selected students in City’s leading Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering (RCBE). As we continue our cutting-edge research and industrial and clinical collaborations, you will also have this opportunity.

Academic facilities

As a student on this course you will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge test and measurement instrumentation – oscilloscopes, function generators, analysers – as well as specialist signal generators and analysers. The equipment is predominantly provided by the world-leading test and measurement equipment manufacturer Keysight, who have partnered with City to provide branding to our electronics laboratories. You also have access to brand new teaching labs and a dedicated postgraduate teaching lab. And as part of the University of London you can also become a member of Senate House Library for free with your student ID card.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught through face-to-face lectures in small groups, where there is a lot of interaction and feedback. Laboratory sessions run alongside the lectures, giving you the opportunity to develop your problem-solving and design skills. You also learn software skills in certain modules, which are taught inside computer labs. We also arrange hospital visits so you gain hands-on experience of different clinical environments.

We arrange tutorials for setting coursework, highlight important subject areas, conduct practical demonstrations, and offer support with revision. You are assessed by written examinations at the end of each term, and coursework assignments, which are set at various times throughout the term.

You also work towards an individual project, which is assessed in the form of a written thesis and an oral examination at the end of the summer. The project can be based on any area of biomedical engineering, telemedicine or technology management and will be supervised by an academic or clinical scientist with expertise in the subject area. Many projects are based in hospital clinical engineering departments, or if you are a part-time student, you can base the project on your own workplace. You will have regular contact with the supervisor to make sure the project progresses satisfactorily. Some of the programme’s current students are working on a project focusing on devices that use brain signals to move external objects such as a remote control car and a prosthetic arm.

Some of the previous projects students have worked on include:
-A cursor controller based on electrooculography (EOG)
-Modelling a closed-loop automated anaesthesia system
-Design of a movement artefact-resistant wearable heart rate/activity monitor
-Review of progress towards a fully autonomous artificial mechanical heart
-Design of smartphone-based healthcare diagnostic devices and sensors.

If you successfully complete eight modules and the dissertation you will be awarded 180 credits and a Masters level qualification. Alternatively, if you do not complete the dissertation but have successfully completed eight modules, you will be awarded 120 credits and a postgraduate diploma. Completing four modules (60 credits) will lead to a postgraduate certificate.


Along with the 60 credit dissertation eight core modules cover diverse subject areas including biomedical electronics and instrumentation, technology infrastructure management, as well as the latest advances in medical imaging and patient monitoring.

The course includes a special module which gives you an introduction to anatomy, physiology and pathology designed for non-clinical science graduates.

The most innovative areas of biomedical and clinical engineering are covered and the content draws from our research expertise in biomedical sensors, bio-optics, medical imaging, signal processing and modelling. Course Aims

The programme will:
• explore clinical audit within wider health policy and regulatory contexts
• promote greater understanding of governance, quality, assurance and the management of risk within and between healthcare organisations

Module One: Governance and Assurance in Healthcare
This module will enable participants to critically consider the governance requirements and regulatory frameworks which apply to healthcare organisations and within this the role and value of clinical audit as a source of assurance. The key focus will be on governance and healthcare in the NHS, although the module will draw on developments in other sectors and countries as these have influenced the requirements placed on healthcare organisations in the United Kingdom.

Core topics include:
• Understanding the NHS: Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships
• What is Governance and Why Does It Matter?
• Governance, Risk, & Assurance within the NHS
• Assuring the Quality of Care: The Pivotal Role of Clinical Audit

Module Two: Clinical Audit:
This module considers what constitutes robust clinical audit (at both strategy, programme and project level) and explores the value of clinical audit at all levels of an organisation - locating this within the wider quality framework for an organisation or team. The module also provides an opportunity for students to critically review the key stages within the clinical audit cycle, develop their skills in planning and undertaking audits and identify the key challenges involved in managing clinical audit projects and programmes.

Module Three: Managing Change and Quality Improvement:
All healthcare organisations are dependent on their staff, so how do you get the best from them? This module explores the core concepts associated with change so as to enable students to effectively manage the behavioural and organisational issues associated with audit and quality improvement programmes. The aim is for students to (i) develop strategies and actions and (ii) be able to apply a range of different tools and techniques which together enable them to contribute to the successful delivery of sustainable change across professional, functional and hierarchical boundaries.

Module Four: Realising the Potential of Quality Audit:
This module requires students to bring together the knowledge and skills from earlier in their programme of study and to purposefully apply these in a well researched, extended project. Students will be required to critically examine a self-chosen empirical issue or, preferably, a specific work-related problem and develop a related action plan.

Teaching & Assessment

The Postgraduate Certificate is assessed through coursework. This will involve completion of individual and group exercises together with submission of a formal assignment at the end of each module. There will be a choice of assignment subjects for each module and assignment titles, submission deadlines and reading lists will be supplied at the start of the course.

Further Study:
The PG Certificate in Medical Science (Clinical Audit) provides a bespoke introduction to clinical audit at postgraduate level and is a qualification in its own right. However, should students wish to continue their studies, the course has been designed to act as a precursor to further academic study at Keele University and other institutions. Students who successfully complete the PGCertificate can, for example, progress onto the Diploma or Masters in Medical Science within the Faculty of Health at Keele.

Our new MSc in Clinical Neuropsychiatry will allow students to develop the skills and knowledge required to specialise in neuropsychiatry as a clinician or academic. We welcome biomedical and psychology graduates, as well as psychiatrists, neurologists and psychologists onto the course.

You will gain training in the key scientific and clinical aspects of clinical Neuropsychiatry and related research. The course offers a strong clinical element, including practical experience of clinical assessment and management through clinical placements.

Students will have unrivalled access to international experts (both clinical and non-clinical) across the spectrum of clinical and basic sciences relevant to neuropsychiatry.

This includes:

  • Access to a comprehensive range of neuropsychiatry populations through South London & Maudsley NHS Trust including one of only two national inpatient neuropsychiatry units (and the only one dealing with complex/longstay patients with functional neurological disorders and brain injury).
  • Access to King’s College Hospital specialist services (e.g. stroke, brain injury rehab, Deep Brain Stimulation, non-motor Parkinson’s, epilepsy, motor neurone disease, MS, functional neurological disorders).
