This MSc aims to encourage an integrated understanding of child development and a range of childhood disorders, and to give students an opportunity to apply this understanding in a clinical setting through a supervised placement in the second year within a mental health service.

About this degree

The programme draws together theory, research and therapeutic thinking from a range of perspectives, including clinical and cognitive psychology, systemic thinking, psychoanalysis and neuroscience. In a workshop setting, students develop competencies in engagement, assessment and evaluation, and practical skills necessary for therapeutic work with children and families. These are then put into practice during the clinical placement.

This two-year MSc has a total value of 270 credits. Each year students complete modules to the value of 135 credits.

Year one: taught modules (135 credits). Year two: clinical skills modules (35 credits), a clinical practice in context module (15 credits) and the research dissertation (85 credits).

Dissertation/research project

All MSc students undertake a research portfolio which may include both a developmental and a clinical focus, such as the evaluation and understanding of clinical and therapeutic services for children and young people. This culminates in a dissertation made up of an 8,000-word journal paper and a poster.

Teaching and learning

In year one students attend weekly lectures complemented by small group seminars. Modules focusing on clinical skills are classroom based. In year two, as well as taking further modules, students move into a 2-3 days per week placement in a child and adolescent mental health (CAMHS) setting, supervised by an experienced clinician. Assessment is by a mixture of coursework, examinations and the dissertation.

Careers

Since the MSc was established in 2011 graduates have gone on to work with children and families in various therapeutic settings, or to undertake further doctoral-level clinical training, such as clinical psychology, child psychotherapy, or counselling psychology. Some of our graduates also pursue research careers, including PhD study.

Our MSc Paediatric Dentistry course will equip you with the advanced academic knowledge and clinical skills required to practice as a specialist in paediatric dentistry.

This is a full-time, three-year master's degree that combines the taught and research elements of the MSc with a mandatory clinical training unit.

You will build up your knowledge of literature in this field, learning from consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry. Taught elements are delivered in lectures, seminars, practical skills sessions and online learning.

You will develop your clinical skills at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital.

Clinical teaching involves close supervision of a personal cohort of patients with a broad range of paediatric dental needs, including those with dental anomalies, trauma and caries, under supervision by hospital specialists and consultants. Clinical training involves attendance at consultant new patient clinics.

Completing this course will prepare you to practice as a specialist paediatric dentist or pursue a clinical academic or research career in this field. You will be eligible to sit the Membership in Paediatric Dentistry tri-collegiate specialty membership examination upon completion of the course. 

Aims

This course aims to:

  • provide you with a high level of clinical training at the large consultant-led paediatric dental department within the University Dental Hospital of Manchester;
  • provide you with the knowledge and skills to practice at the level of a specialist in paediatric dentistry, including dental treatment of the paediatric patient under local analgesia, inhalational sedation, IV sedation and general anaesthesia;
  • equip you with in-depth critical appraisal skills that will enable you to independently appraise paediatric dental literature;
  • improve your oral presentation skills;
  • ensure you are competent in the design and interpretation of original clinical research at the forefront of current dental research;
  • provide you with the knowledge and experience to plan, implement and complete a research project.

Teaching and learning

We employ a diverse range of teaching methods, including clinical teaching both in the labs and on clinic, didactic lectures, and seminars to help you understand key course concepts.

Additional self-directed learning enables you to reflect upon your clinical work, skills and key concepts introduced within seminars.

Seminars are supervised by consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry and will enable you to develop communication and presentation skills, as well as appreciate the relevance of scientific study to clinical practice.

In addition, the course is designed to provide a foundation in research skills and methodologies to prepare you for further research or to pursue a clinical academic career.

This complements the research project and dissertation, where master's students have the opportunity to demonstrate the collation and presentation of information in this field.

The varied blend of training methods aims to promote a stimulating and dynamic teaching environment. Inherent within the course is the expectation that you will acquire the skills to enable you to work independently and effectively in an interdisciplinary clinical environment.

Coursework and assessment

Formal assessment for the Research Methods, Biostatistics, and Guideline Development and Implementation units will be undertaken via marked written assignments.

The CPD unit will be assessed via a combination of written and practical examinations.

For the clinical skills component, assessment is through examination of a variety of skills procedures carried out in the skills facility.

For the clinical component, case write-up and presentation, assessment is through marking of both the written component oral presentation of cases and clinical governance projects.

This course will have the majority of its clinical activity in the Paediatric Dental department in the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running in the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital. Clinical teaching will be delivered by consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry.

The dissertation is marked in line with all of our dentistry MSc dissertations.

Paediatric dentistry is a stimulating and rewarding speciality, and offers a number of career opportunities. Paediatric dentists may work in private practice, the community dental setting and in dental hospitals.

In addition to this clinical role, many paediatric dentists participate in teaching and research. These interests can be combined with part-time clinical work or undertaken on a full-time basis.

In the UK, consultants in paediatric dentistry may work in a community or hospital setting and concentrate on the management of complex, multidisciplinary cases. They also play an important role in the management of the unit in which they work.

Our MRes Experimental Cancer Medicine master's course will give nurses, doctors and clinical researchers the skills needed to work in early phase clinical studies.

You will learn how to master experimental cancer through a combination of traditional teaching and hands-on learning, spending a year as a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie while also taking four structured taught units.

The taught units will see you learn the details of designing and delivering Phase 1 clinical studies, understanding the pre-clinical data required before a clinical programme can commence, and how to optimise early clinical studies to provide evidence for progressing a promising drug into Phase II/III clinical testing.

Alongside the taught elements, you will be allocated to one or more clinical trials that are being conducted by The Christie experimental cancer medicine team. You will have a named trainer and be exposed to tasks required in the setup, delivery, interpretation and audit of a clinical study.

Nursing and physician students will be expected to participate in patient care, including new and follow-on patient clinics, treatment and care-giving episodes with patients.

For clinical trials coordinators, no direct patient contact is envisaged and duties will involve clinical trial setup, protocol amendments, database setup, data entry, costing and billing for clinical research.

You will be able to choose two aspects of your direct clinical trial research experience to write up for your two research projects in a dissertation format. This will give you the skills and knowledge required to critically report medical, scientific and clinically related sciences for peer review.

The primary purpose of the MRes in Experimental Cancer Medicine is to provide you with the opportunity to work within a premier UK Phase 1 cancer clinical trials unit and, through a mix of taught and experiential learning, master the discipline of Experimental Cancer Medicine.

Dr Natalie Cook is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie. She completed a PhD at Cambridge, investigating translational therapeutics and biomarker assay design in pancreatic cancer.

Professor Hughes is Chair of Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Strategic Director of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team at The Christie. He is a member of the research strategy group for Manchester Cancer Research Centre. He serves on the Biomarker evaluation review panel for CRUK grant applications.

Professor Hughes was previously Global Vice-President for early clinical development at AstraZeneca, overseeing around 100 Phase 0/1/2 clinical studies. He was previously Global Vice-President for early phase clinical oncology, having been involved in over 200 early phase clinical studies.

Dr Matthew Krebs is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie.

He has a PhD in circulating biomarkers and postdoctoral experience in single cell and ctDNA molecular profiling. He is Principal Investigator on a portfolio of phase 1 clinical trials and has research interests in clinical development of novel drugs for lung cancer and integration of biomarkers with experimental drug development.

Teaching and learning

Our course is structured around a 2:1 split between clinical-based research projects and taught elements respectively.

Taught course units will predominantly use lectures and workshops.

For the research projects, teaching and learning will take place through one-to-one mentoring from a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team.

The clinical and academic experience of contributors to this course will provide you with an exceptional teaching and learning experience.

About this degree

This programme provides students with the unique opportunity to study at world-leading ophthalmology institutions, where they will be exposed to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment approaches. Placements take place within City's partnership of healthcare providers in Central and North East London who provide you with clinical placements, including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and North Middlesex HNS Trust.

This allows you to become familiar with the needs of local communities and its healthcare providers. Clinical placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional knowledge and skills.

Academic facilities

Facilities at City include the excellent fully equipped Clinical Skills Centre in addition to an interactive Biological Sciences Laboratory.

Many of the clinical practice placements offer the opportunity for students to experience environments where clinical diagnostic tests are performed and in addition operating theatres where surgical procedures are carried out.

Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice. The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme and are expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week.

Compulsory modules
Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:

Clinical education is an integral and invaluable component of the programme. It is strongly embedded within the course structure. Preceding campus-based studies provide the skills and knowledge which students require in order to be prepared for their placements.

Continuing modernisation of the NHS has seen a move away from a focus on non-acute health interventions being delivered in hospitals to the delivery of care in the community. Experience gained on all clinical education modules throughout your undergraduate training aims to reflect these developments by providing you with a broad range of experience across a variety of settings including acute NHS hospitals, private healthcare providers, community hospitals, health centres, GP surgeries, schools, nursing homes and sports centres etc.

Regardless of location or specialty students are expected to adopt a holistic approach towards their patient/client, taking into account individual psychological, social, cultural and economic factors, whilst embracing the principles of health promotion and health education.

All clinical placement modules are organised on the student's behalf by the clinical co-ordination team. This allows us to provide you with a balanced clinical experience both in terms of the specialties/patient groups you have worked with and the range of health care setting you have worked in. It is important that you are exposed to a variety of health settings, which are reflective of current clinical practice.

In total students will complete in excess of 1,000 hours of clinical experience in order to complete the programme. Clinical education occurs in six-week blocks which gives you time to "find your feet" and have a highly valuable learning experience at the same time as providing you with plenty of opportunity to demonstrate your learning and develop as a clinician.

It is anticipated that whilst on clinical placement you will be working a 34-hour week minimum, (compared to full-time workers this effectively means you have one half-day off per week). However, the number of hours you work and the time at which you start and finish work is subject to negotiation with both college and the supervising clinical educator.

Whilst on placements you will be supervised by physiotherapists registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Students will be assessed on placement by their supervising clinician(s), using a standardized assessment tool – the Clinical Assessment Record (CAR form). The assessment score from clinical placement modules will contribute to your final degree classification

Most clinical placements are located within the Greater London area, ie within the M25, but a few could be further away necessitating "staying over on placement" during the week. You should anticipate the need to "stay over" on at least one or two occasions.

We are sympathetic to your needs when we assign clinical placements. However, we are unable to guarantee that any student will be located close to their home or term-time address and you may have to commute or live away from home for the duration of a placement or two. We do try to give special consideration to students whose personal circumstances fall within specified criteria, ie they have young children, are a main carer, or have a declared disability etc.

If the NHS is paying your university fees, your travel costs (in excess of the expense you normally incur between home and college) and if necessary the costs of alternative accommodation can be reclaimed from the NHS. However you should note that they is always a delay between paying out money and being reimbursed which can create temporary cash-flow issues.

Academic teaching is delivered in-house by experienced physiotherapy lecturers with specific specialist clinical knowledge and skills. Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship-centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice. The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme with students expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week. All modules are compulsory.

Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:

Our MSc in Clinical Biochemistry will give you a thorough grounding in a discipline that deals with the clinical analysis of body fluids and other biological material to aid the diagnosis, therapy and monitoring of diseases.

Clinical biochemists are typically clinical scientists who work in hospital laboratories providing advice and interpretation of analytical results to other healthcare professionals such as clinicians, general practitioners and nurses.

They are also involved in the development of new analytical methods and improvement of clinical services, including quality assurance and audit. 

Through this MSc, you will gain a core knowledge and understanding of the normal physiology and pathophysiology of the major organs and endocrine systems, as well as more specialist areas such as paediatric biochemistry and drug monitoring.

This innovative MSc programme aims to provide students with a strong knowledge and experience base for progressing to health service careers, particularly those looking to become clinical psychologists and clinical psychology researchers.

The Masters will equip you with an up to date knowledge of relevant theory and practical issues in UK mental health services, and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake research and development in academic and healthcare settings. Students will also have the opportunity to complete a work placement in an applied setting, providing valuable skills and experience that will aid career development.

This programme is intended for graduates in Psychology or related disciplines who are interested in progressing to careers in the health professions as practitioners, researchers or managers, and current health service professionals with a degree in Psychology or related disciplines who wish to enhance skills and knowledge in the areas covered by the programme as part of their continuing professional development. This programme is also intended for those who may want to pursue a postgraduate research degree in areas related in clinical psychology. Please note, however, that the MSc itself does not lead to a clinical qualification.

Modules & structure

The programme comprises two pathways: an Applied Clinical Psychology an a Research in Clinical Psychology pathway undertaken over one year of full-time study, or two years equivalent part-time study. All students on both pathways will complete the following core modules:

  • Research Design and Analysis
  • Research Project

For the remaining modules, students will need to choose between the two pathways on the programme.

Students on the Applied Clinical Psychology pathway complete the following module:

  • Professional Practice

The key feature of this module is a 35 day work placement in a setting relevant to clinical psychology. This pathway would suit students with limited work experience in areas related to clinical psychology, and who would like to develop a career in a more applied setting.

Students on the Research in Clinical Psychology pathway complete the following modules:

  • Advanced Quantitative Methods
  • Applied Research Design in Clinical Psychology
  • Statistical Data Analysis Project

These modules are designed to provide students with more advanced research knowledge and skills. This pathway would suit students who would like to progress to further postgraduate study, particularly a PhD or DClinPsy, where research skills are key, and/or those students who already have substantial work experience in areas related to clinical psychology.

Written and multiple-choice examinations, essay coursework, oral presentation, research dissertation.

Skills

The programme will provide you with knowledge of theory and practical issues relevant to practice in the UK mental health services, with a particular focus on clinical psychology. It will provide you with the knowledge and skills to undertake research in clinical settings and analyse data. You will have the opportunity to develop your own research and career interests by conducting a research project under the supervision of a member of staff and relevant external health services staff. Students on the Applied Clinical Psychology pathway will have the opportunity to complete a work placement where they can gain valuable skills and experience in an applied setting.

Careers

The programme is designed to provide a foundation for graduates who are interested in further developing the academic skills and experience needed to apply for UK Clinical Doctorate programs or for PhD programs in areas related to clinical psychology.

It would also help develop skills and knowledge for those who seek to develop careers in the NHS and with private healthcare providers more generally, including careers in various Allied Health fields and NHS management.

Lastly, the programme is designed to facilitate career progression for those already working in the health sector, by developing new academic skills and experience, particularly in relation to research design and analysis

If you want to undertake research, you will be supported by one of our leading academic researchers to undertake a small-scale clinical research project to complete the MSc award.

Following four compulsory units in Year 1, you can choose from 12 units in Year 2 to tailor the course to your own interests.

There are two learning routes to suit pharmacists in all patient-facing roles and with differing work demands.

Distance learning

This is a completely online route and allows you to study from home at times convenient to you, which is ideal for international students, shift workers and those based outside the Manchester area.

Interactive online learning supplemented by webinars will enhance your skills in optimising drug therapy and clinical problem-solving. This route is open to pharmacists in any patient-facing role.

Blended learning

This route consists of seven study days per year and interactive online learning that will enhance your clinical knowledge, teaching you to optimise drug therapy and develop your problem-solving skills.

You need to be in a patient-facing role and will need both a suitable work environment and work-based tutor. Study days are mandatory.

This route is generally aimed at Band 6 and 7 pharmacists who are seeking to develop within the NHS.

Both routes are open to qualified pharmacists who would like to develop their clinical skills and enhance their practice.

Accreditation

The content of this course is accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS). We are an RPS Foundation School and are recognised by the RPS for our commitment to pursuing and promoting quality and excellence within the profession.

Our MClin Res Clinical Research course is aimed at nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and other non- medical/dental healthcare professionals who want to work in clinical research, or are already working in this area and want to develop the skills needed for other positions where research plays a key role.

You will develop in-depth knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings of clinical research and skills in research methods relevant to applied research in a range of contemporary clinical practice settings.

The course is mainly delivered online, but is complemented by two compulsory four-day campus-based introductory and winter study schools, and one mid-semester study day in Semesters 1 and 2.

Most of the units that make up this course are shared with other students on master's and postgraduate research programmes at Manchester.

The PGCert Clin Res  comprises four taught units (60 academic credits in total).

This course teaches the academic and clinical skills you need to practise orthodontics. You’ll develop an evidence-based, critical approach to this specialism and to general clinical dentistry. A focus on research skills will give you the confidence to complete future clinical or laboratory-based research programmes.

The programme includes all the features of the first two years of the Curriculum and Specialist Training Programme in Orthodontics approved by the UK General Dental Council.

World-leading dental school

Our internationally recognised oral and dental research is organised into two overarching themes: ‘clinical and person centred’ and ‘basic and applied’. You’ll complete your clinical training in Sheffield’s Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, part of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. There are 150 dental units with modern facilities for treatment under sedation, a well-equipped dental radiography department, oral pathology laboratories and a hospital dental production laboratory.

We have new modern research facilities and laboratories for tissue culture, molecular biology, materials science and histology- microscopy. All laboratories have dedicated technical support and academic expertise to guide you.

Health clearance

If you’re starting a course that involves exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissues, you must conform to the national guidelines for the protection of patients, health care workers and students. Before admission to a clinical course we’ll need to check that you’re not an infectious carrier of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and that you do not have tuberculosis. A positive test doesn’t necessarily exclude you from dental training.

Our immunisation requirements are constantly being reviewed to ensure we meet current Department of Health guidance. You need to comply with these if you are offered a place. You’ll get more information when you apply, but if you have any questions on health clearance issues, please get in touch.

If you apply for one of our clinical courses you’ll need a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure.
