This 12-unit course provides students with the full range of quantitative and analytical skills necessary to work in the broad domain of clinical health. It especially focuses on developing skills in the quantitative methods of clinical research and application to patient care.

Students must complete 9 core units, plus either 3 electives or 1 elective and a 12 credit point project.

Teaching is structured as a combination of on-line educational delivery, and face to face block days which suits busy professionals and those who balance other responsibilities in their lives.

Students may quality for entry into a PhD by the following pathways:

Successfully completing the Master of Clinical Research Methods including a Distinction average in: chronic diseases: epidemiology and prevention; regression methods for epidemiology; advanced statistical methods for clinical research; clinical measurement and systematic reviews and meta-analysis.

Course Overview

​The programme is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is accredited by the British Dietetic Association. It enables nutrition graduates to study dietetics so that they can apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian at Postgraduate Diploma or MSc level.

The Postgraduate Diploma programme is closely aligned to the BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics programme and contains three compulsory placements in NHS Dietetics Departments in Wales.

Students exiting with the Postgraduate Diploma can return to undertake the dissertation on a part-time basis to gain the MSc Dietetics.

Entry Requirements​

Applicants should have an honours degree (1st class or 2:1) in human nutrition, or a degree that includes nutrition in the awards title, with sufficient emphasis on physiology and biochemistry (50 credits in total required, with at least 20 credits in human physiology and 20 credits in human biochemistry).

It is also preferable for candidates to have 10 credits in sociology and 10 credits in psychology, however this can be taken alongside other modules on the programme if successful.

Students should have completed their degree not more than five years before their proposed entry to this Masters.
Applicants who have a first or upper second-class honours degree in nutrition, which does not contain either sufficient biochemistry or physiology (but not both), can undertake further relevant modules at undergraduate level, prior to applying for the programme.

Applicants who do not have a degree award in nutrition (1st or 2:1) but meet the requirements for biochemistry and physiology, will need to undertake a further relevant taught course of study to at least to postgraduate diploma level prior to applying for the course.

Applicants who speak English as a second language must have adequate command of English, with an IELTS score of 7, with at least 6.5 in all elements.

​Course Content​​

During the programme students are educated to be responsive practitioners, able to adapt to the changing needs of society. The course is designed to produce critically thinking and reflective professionals who have comprehensive theoretical knowledge, along with a spirit of enquiry and an analytical and creative approach to problem solving.

The programme has two main parts; the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.

Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics:
This part contains the taught academic element, which is closely aligned to the BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics programme and three periods of practical training. On completion students can graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, which leads to eligibility to apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian.

MSc:
Students can undertake the dissertation to obtain MSc Dietetics, which can be achieved straight after the Postgraduate Diploma element. On completion students can be awarded MSc Dietetics, which also leads to eligibility to apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian. Alternatively the dissertation can be taken after being awarded the Postgraduate Diploma, within 5 years of initial enrolment; this can be taken on a part-time basis.

The taught academic part of the course contains six modules at Level 7 (Masters). In addition, students study professional body modules (level 5) in order to fulfil the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council and the British Dietetic Association curriculum guidelines.

Learning & Teaching​

​The taught element of the programme involve lectures, tutorials and practical work. Tutorials are mainly case study based where students apply the theoretical knowledge gained in lectures to problem solve case scenarios. Practical sessions are either food based, involve giving presentations or practice in consultation skills. The practicals take place in the specialist food facilities and the clinical simulation suite.

It is expected that students undertake independent reading and self-study; this is aided by the use of Moodle, the Virtual Learning Environment in use at the University.

In addition students undertake 3 periods of practical training in NHS Dietetics departments in Wales. Full preparation is given prior to the placements and students are supported and visited during the placements by Dietetic Academic staff.

All students are allocated a personal tutor who offers pastoral support and guides the student through personal development planning.

Assessment

Each module is assessed by examination and/or assignment. All the modules are externally assessed. The clinical training placements have to be successfully completed to proceed and graduate.

Employability & Careers​

Dietitians normally begin their career in the National Health Service where they progress to the main clinical grades. The opportunity exists for specialisation in various aspects of dietetics by means of post-registration education. In addition there are opportunities for dietitians to be involved in health education/promotion, education, research and journalism.

The course is structured in 2 parts. Part A. Foundational studies for dietetics and Part B. Evidence based dietetics, planning and treatment and C. Dietetic practice. All students complete Parts B and C. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A.

Part A. Foundational studies for dietetics
These studies will provide you with an orientation to dietetics at the advanced undergraduate and early graduate level. You will examine the nutrition and food science underpinning dietetics, consider population health in the context of nutrition and the Australian food supply, explore health behaviours and cultural competency, assessment of nutritional status, and the role of diet in the causation and treatment of chronic diseases that are endemic in westernised societies. These studies are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in nutrition science.

Part B. Evidence based dietetics, planning and treatment
These studies will provide you with the core knowledge and professional skills relevant to thoughtful, innovative and evidence-based dietetic practice and for accreditation with the Dietitian Association of Australia. You will learn about a range of clinical conditions and diseases and develop skill in dietetic education and case management with a focus on person-centred care. This will include an understanding of issues relating to healthcare systems, services, management, ethics and quality improvement.

Part C. Dietetic practice
These studies will enable you to connect the theoretical components of your course with the practical aspects of dietetics practice including under the valuable guidance of practitioners. This is an accelerated programme that builds on prior learning and provides you with a practical and sound scientific understanding of dietetics and nutrition. It will help you become a safe, effective learner and practitioner in all fields of dietetic practice.

You'll learn the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease. We'll help you adapt this knowledge into practical guidance on helping others make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.

You'll also learn about food, nutrition, dietetics and relevant disease aetiology, pathology and management. Clinical skills, research skills and public health are also embedded in the course, as well as three compulsory practice placements.

Successfully complete the course to become eligible for application to the register of health professionals who meet the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards for training, professional skills and behaviour.

After the course

Dietitians work help manage the health and nutritional needs of individuals, communities and populations. This postgraduate diploma will provide you with the core knowledge and skills needed to work in a wide variety of areas, such as public health and health promotion, nutrition related disease and/or disease related malnutrition management and primary care management involving dietary needs in patients with long-term health conditions.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

Course details

The MClinRes will be delivered by blended learning, in one year full time or on a part time basis.

Pathways in this programme will include four core modules: applying evidence to practice, project design for research, applied qualitative research methods and applied quantitative research methods, as well as the research dissertation. Choose a 20 credit optional module from the diverse array on offer in the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences. The core modules build on each other providing skills in literature searching and implementing findings to the workplace; designing research protocols; understanding applied qualitative and quantitative methods and undertaking a clinically-relevant research project.

To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits by studying three core modules worth 20 credits each. To gain a postgraduate diploma you will need to earn 120 credits by studying the four core modules, the optional module and an additional module from the MSc Advanced Professional Practice. To be awarded the full MClinRes masters, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits - you’ll study the same modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 80 credits coming from your research dissertation.

This MSc focuses on the problems of over- and under-nutrition, which apply to most developed nations as well as those undergoing rapid transformation. The programme offers specialised training in the clinical and scientific basis of malnutrition and obesity, and therapeutic approaches to correcting this in the hospital, community and educational setting.

Degree information

The programme focuses on periods of the lifecycle when nutrition is particularly important; these include: acute illness, trauma, surgery or malignancy; and chronic conditions in which disease, nutrition and treatment interact. The aetiology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of obesity will be explored alongside all approaches currently being used in its treatment.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) comprising all taught modules is offered. If you have a science degree with a substantial proportion of physiology and biochemistry, this course will enable you to apply that knowledge in the context of nutrition and dietetics. You will learn about nutritional science and its application in health and illness, together with life-cycle nutrition, biochemistry, physiology and food science.

The combination of academic and clinical practice learning activities throughout the course will enable you to develop a patient-centred approach and equip you with the knowledge and skills to become a registered dietitian. Clinical Placement

To comply with HCPC registration requirements, you must complete three clinical placements, which must be undertaken in an approved hospital or community dietetics departments.

Placements will be allocated centrally and you may be placed anywhere throughout Scotland for each of your three placements.

Progression to Masters

An MSc dissertation can be undertaken following successful completion of the PgD. This can be either part or full time, and costs vary depending on time between graduation and commencement of MSc project.

Employment Opportunities

An expansion of interest in food in relation to health, alongside the changing nature of the NHS, has extended the boundaries of dietetics to include a wide range of professional opportunities.

Employment can either be found in a clinical setting, usually within the NHS, or in NHS community practices. Dieticians also find employment in many other related fields including research, the food industry, consultancy and private practice, social services, media, health education and health promotion. However, the majority of graduates from the programme will initially be employed as NHS hospital-based dietitians.

Current employment rates are good with most graduates who are prepared to work throughout the UK being employed within six months of graduation.

Registered dietitians are qualified health professionals who assess diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems both at individual and population level. Dietitians use the most up to date research on diet and health which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.

This course is designed for pre-registration training in Dietetics. It is not aimed at qualified dietitians wishing to take a masters degree. Qualified dietitians are encouraged to apply for the MSc Human Nutrition.

- Description -

This course is an intensive course designed to provide a scientific base in the study of food and nutrition and the effect of diet and health on wellbeing. On completion of this course graduate dietitians will also have advanced research skills having completed an independent reasearch project as part of this degree.

- Format and assessment -

This course provides study of core modules in human nutrition and dietetics and includes two clinical placement blocks. Year 1 semester 1 (60 credits) and 2 (75 credits) are taught modules in core subjects. Year 1 semester 3 students undertake Human Nutrition Masters research project which is an integral part of the programme where students undertake an independent research project. Clinical placement modules are undertaken in year 2 and are generally within a hospital and/or community setting. Placements are predominantly in Northern Ireland with consolidation tutorials at University between placements. Successful students will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for Registration as a dietitian or apply to CORU for validation of qualification to practice as a dietitian in the Republic of Ireland.

Teaching is delivered by a variety of methods including face to face lectures and also using on line lectures and discussions. A variety of assessments are used throughout the course to test knowledge and understanding. Assessments include examinations, class tests, practical reports, case studies, MCQs, oral presentations and reports and also through clinical placement portfolios.

There is a growing demand worldwide for highly trained graduates in the field of clinical nutrition and health for positions in the health services, local government, food industries and research and development. Countries all over the world recognise the important role nutrition plays in improving health and preventing disease and have prioritised nutrition and diet within their national health plans.

Most countries worldwide have identified a need to increase the capacity of their nutrition workforce, but few have the resources to provide this in their own country beyond undergraduate level.

The MSc Clinical Nutrition and Health is designed to address this priority. It is aimed at medical doctors, graduates of life sciences (with a strong underpinning in physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, health psychology, food science) and degree level health professionals who want to improve their knowledge of clinical nutrition.

The programme will be of particular interest to overseas students for whom this specialist field of study may not be available in their country of origin. The MSc research project develops your research skills, scientific writing skills and consolidates your knowledge base in clinical nutrition and health.

The Master of Dietetics (MDiet) degree is an academic and professional dietetic training course which prepares graduates to work as dietitians in New Zealand. This full time, two-year course encompasses specialist papers in clinical nutrition, public health, food service, professional skills, research thesis preparation, a block placement and a research project.

The first year of the programme is taught in Dunedin. Early Learning in Dietetics (practical experience placements) will be completed under the supervision of dietetic tutors in hospital, community, public health and foodservice environments. The second year consists of one semester of placements and one semester of research in one of a number of centres.

The Intensive Master of Clinical Embryology course (MCE) has gained global recognition as a training program for all assisted reproductive technologies (ART), producing high calibre embryologists, with the excellent knowledge and practical skills to eventually work in, and manage, human ART clinics. MCE is offered both on-campus (one year full time) and off-campus (restricted entry, full or part-time) to domestic and international students

Your studies will include the foundations of mammalian embryology, detailed assessment of all infertility treatment strategies, the theoretical basis behind embryo production, embryo selection and cryopreservation, focussing on all current and future technologies associated with ART. There are 3 units dedicated to Total Quality Management, Preimplantation Diagnosis and Ethics. Most importantly, we are equipped to teach all the practical skills required of andrologists and embryologists, beginning with sperm and embryo handling and assessment, and slowly building skills though learning in vitro fertilisation techniques, the latest cryopreservation techniques, such as vitrification of gametes and embryos finally finishing the year with ICSI and biopsy. Overview

This 12-month, intensive course provides students with the essential postgraduate knowledge and practical skills necessary to contribute competently to human infertility clinical services. Theoretical and practical skills are presented in the broad context of the regulations and the ethical considerations that apply to human IVF, both nationally and internationally, along with the quality control procedures required to ensure maximum success for IVF patients. The guidelines, protocols and regulations that steer and control human infertility services are also presented. In addition to attending lectures and self-directed study, students are required to undertake continual practical skills training and also students will undertake a minor research project. Students will not only be equipped with practical skills required for work in an IVF laboratory but also gain a greater understanding of research applications within the field of reproductive or developmental biology. Research-related tasks contribute to the overall assessment for specific coursework units.

Career opportunities

On completion of this course graduates may gain employment as clinical embryologists, or work in laboratories in embryology, health, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), or in related jobs within the reproductive biology field.

This course is for graduates of biological sciences who want to extend their studies into the professional field of dietetics.

Dietetics is the management of diseases that are amenable to dietary intervention and the prevention of nutrition related disorders. A dietitian influences food selection and eating behaviour of an individual based on specific nutritional or food requirements.

With a clinical and health promotion focus, this course includes three blocks of integrated practice placements of 4, 12 and 12 weeks duration within a hospital and/or primary care setting.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The emphasis is on student-centred learning where your previous knowledge and skills are used to develop your new subject area. Learning activities include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical classes and are guided using web-based supported materials.

You will also attend three practical placements to enable the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical experience. A variety of assessment methods are used across the course. Normally, there are 12 - 15 students on this course. This ensures that individuals receive excellent support and benefit from sharing their experiences with classmates.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module is equivalent to a notional 150 hours of work which is made up of attendance in class and independent work. The structure of each module is different with different attendance requirements for each timetabled module. Over an average semester the expectation is that during 14 weeks of teaching this will equate to approx. 40 hours per week of student effort (contact classes plus independent study time). Students normally complete the course via a full time route but part-time routes are available and can be discussed with the Programme Leader. All placements are completed on a full-time basis normally Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm.

Links with industry/professional bodies

This course provides eligibility to apply for registration as a dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council. It is also accredited by the British Dietetic Association.

15 credits: Food and Nutrition/ Principles of Nutrition Science/ Clinical Sciences/ Therapeutic Interventions/ Professional Studies/ Professional Practice/ Evaluation of Practice/ Pharmacology and Pharmacogenetics.
You will also carry out practice placements, which you must pass but which do not carry any credit.

If studying for an MSc, you will also complete a dissertation (60 credits).

Careers

Career prospects on completion of the course are varied. Most graduates normally choose to work within the NHS as dietitians. Others will work in health education, health promotion, general practice, private healthcare and government advisory posts. Opportunities also exist in the food and pharmaceutical industries in, for example: food labelling; nutrient profiling; product and recipe development; product evaluation and special diet foods. Some graduates may apply for the opportunity to study for a higher degree (MPhil or PhD).

The pathways will all have at least one pathway specific module and two programme optional modules. To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits. You’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each: applying evidence to practice, a pathway specific module or a programme option module if you are not pursuing a specific pathway, and a programme option module. To gain a postgraduate diploma, you’ll need to earn 120 credits. You’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each: project design for research, developing self and others, and a pathway specific module or programme option. To be awarded the full masters degree, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits. You’ll study the same core modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 60 credits coming from your research dissertation.
