The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry aims to fulfil the following goals:

  • Provide the opportunity to advance your knowledge and skills in a specialist area. 
  • Engage with new and emerging fields of study.
  • Facilitate the advanced development of clinical, academic and research skills necessary for you to further your career in academia, research or specialty practice. 

Specialist clinical training is provided for general dentists who have at least two years’ full-time clinical experience after graduating. 

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DCD) is classified under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as a level 9 extended-Masters Degree. Prior to 2012 the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry was classified as a level 10 Doctorate award. The courtesy title of Doctor is conferred at graduation. 

The course is full-time for three years.

APPLICANTS

The course is for general dentists who wish to become specialists. The course is accredited by the Australian Dental Council (ADC) for specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Local graduates of this course may apply for registration to practise in Australia in their designated specialty. International graduates of this course must pass the ADC examinations in addition to the DCD in order to register to practise as a specialist in Australia.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

On completion of the DCD course, you should be able to:

(i) demonstrate special skills in the provision of clinical services applicable to the specialty;

(ii) demonstrate a detailed understanding of the principles, current developments and research methods applicable to the specialty;

(iii) conduct an original scientific investigation into a biological, clinical or community health problem; and

(iv) communicate the results of scientific enquiry.

You could reasonably expect to have acquired the following generic skills by the conclusion of this course:

  • advanced understanding of the changing knowledge base of a specialty;

This course is designed to fill the need, identified by the Dental Council, for a continuing education programme forthe Dental Profession. The course aims to combine a 'hands-on' approach with theory. Students have a choice of nine modules, of which they must successfully complete six in order to obtain their Postgraduate Diploma. Students have to provide their own nursing care (where 1:1 assistance is required) and patients on some modules.

The course aims to give insight into the theory and scientific rationale of various aspects of dental practice, develop clinical ability in the relevant areas, and develop confidence in the use of new skills.

The modules offered are: adhesive dentistry, removable prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics, periodontal therapy, endodontics, oral medicine, orthodontics, dento-alveolar surgery and paediatric dentistry. In addition a core course covering cross-control of infection, medical emergencies in dental practice, ethics, malpractice and risk management and other issues will be taken by all participants. The MClinDent course is a full-time three year specialist training programme with two pathways: Endodontology or Prosthodontics. It has been designed to enhance student life-long learning skills, aid in developing evidence-based practice, develop advanced clinical skills to enable you to become a mono-specialist in Prosthodontics or Endodontology, and facilitate further career development.

You will study 10 taught modules as well as a dissertation module based on your own research project.

By fully engaging in this course, you should be able to:

• Demonstrate an unbiased, systematic and critical appraisal of contemporary knowledge, and an awareness of current problems and/or new insights, many of which are informed by the latest advances in Restorative Dentistry.

• Be capable of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas in Restorative Dentistry often in the absence of complete data, be able to communicate ideas and conclusions clearly and effectively to other specialist colleagues and non-specialist audiences, and engage in critical dialogue about clinical management in Restorative Dentistry.

• Read, understand and critically appraise relevant scientific and clinical literature.

• Formulate a hypothesis, plan and implement an appropriate project to test the hypothesis report the findings of the project in the appropriate format.

• Evaluate psychological aspects relevant to restorative dentistry.

• Execute simple and complex treatment procedures.

There are two pathways to this course: Endodontology or Prosthodontics. Students will choose one pathway.

Years one and two consist of four 30-credit modules per year with the final year consisting of two 30-credit modules and a dissertation module of 60 credits.

Teaching

A diverse range of teaching and learning styles are used throughout the MClinDent. You will attend lectures, and participate in seminars, tutorials, and a clinical attachment. All taught modules are compulsory, and you will also undertake a laboratory-based or clinical research project and independent study to enable you to complete your dissertation. You will be given a list of laboratory, clinical and/or library-based project titles which will form the basis of the final dissertation. Project topics are generally related to the scientific/clinical areas of interest of members of staff, and you will have individual supervision.

Support

All modules make extensive use of Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Learning Central, on which you will find course materials and links to related materials. You will be supervised when undertaking your dissertation, and will have the opportunity for regular meetings with your supervisor to discuss progress, provide advice and guidance, and give written feedback on a draft.

Opportunities to reflect on your abilities and performance are made available through the Learning Central ‘Personal Development Planning’ module and through scheduled meetings with personal tutors.

You will receive written feedback on all assessments, in addition to oral feedback on assessed oral presentations.

Our MSc Paediatric Dentistry course will equip you with the advanced academic knowledge and clinical skills required to practice as a specialist in paediatric dentistry.

This is a full-time, three-year master's degree that combines the taught and research elements of the MSc with a mandatory clinical training unit.

You will build up your knowledge of literature in this field, learning from consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry. Taught elements are delivered in lectures, seminars, practical skills sessions and online learning.

You will develop your clinical skills at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital.

Clinical teaching involves close supervision of a personal cohort of patients with a broad range of paediatric dental needs, including those with dental anomalies, trauma and caries, under supervision by hospital specialists and consultants. Clinical training involves attendance at consultant new patient clinics.

Completing this course will prepare you to practice as a specialist paediatric dentist or pursue a clinical academic or research career in this field. You will be eligible to sit the Membership in Paediatric Dentistry tri-collegiate specialty membership examination upon completion of the course. 

Aims

This course aims to:

  • provide you with a high level of clinical training at the large consultant-led paediatric dental department within the University Dental Hospital of Manchester;
  • provide you with the knowledge and skills to practice at the level of a specialist in paediatric dentistry, including dental treatment of the paediatric patient under local analgesia, inhalational sedation, IV sedation and general anaesthesia;
  • equip you with in-depth critical appraisal skills that will enable you to independently appraise paediatric dental literature;
  • improve your oral presentation skills;
  • ensure you are competent in the design and interpretation of original clinical research at the forefront of current dental research;
  • provide you with the knowledge and experience to plan, implement and complete a research project.

Teaching and learning

We employ a diverse range of teaching methods, including clinical teaching both in the labs and on clinic, didactic lectures, and seminars to help you understand key course concepts.

Coursework and assessment

Formal assessment for the Research Methods, Biostatistics, and Guideline Development and Implementation units will be undertaken via marked written assignments.

The CPD unit will be assessed via a combination of written and practical examinations.

For the clinical skills component, assessment is through examination of a variety of skills procedures carried out in the skills facility.

For the clinical component, case write-up and presentation, assessment is through marking of both the written component oral presentation of cases and clinical governance projects.

This course will have the majority of its clinical activity in the Paediatric Dental department in the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running in the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital. Clinical teaching will be delivered by consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry.

The dissertation is marked in line with all of our dentistry MSc dissertations.

In addition to this clinical role, many paediatric dentists participate in teaching and research. These interests can be combined with part-time clinical work or undertaken on a full-time basis.

In the UK, consultants in paediatric dentistry may work in a community or hospital setting and concentrate on the management of complex, multidisciplinary cases. They also play an important role in the management of the unit in which they work.

You’ll complete your clinical training in Sheffield’s Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, part of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. There are 150 dental units with modern facilities for treatment under sedation, a well-equipped dental radiography department, oral pathology laboratories and a hospital dental production laboratory.

We have new modern research facilities and laboratories for tissue culture, molecular biology, materials science and histology- microscopy. All laboratories have dedicated technical support and academic expertise to guide you.

Health clearance

If you’re starting a course that involves exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissues, you must conform to the national guidelines for the protection of patients, health care workers and students. Before admission to a clinical course we’ll need to check that you’re not an infectious carrier of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and that you do not have tuberculosis. A positive test doesn’t necessarily exclude you from dental training.

Description

This two year part-time postgraduate diploma in Operative Dentistry combines seminars, hands-on training and direct clinical contact with patients, alongside self-guided learning. Course participants will study the applied science of operative dentistry and acquire clinical and practical skills in operative dentistry. This training will be delivered at King’s College Dental Hospital, Denmark Hill (attending between 22 and 26 days per year).

It is specifically designed for dentists already working in dental practice using patients from both their practice and the hospital to develop a reflective log of treatment which will form a major part of their course assessment.

Designed by the Department of Restorative Dentistry, the Operative Dentistry programme will be led by Aws Alani (course director), and alongside well-known visiting teachers, the following practitioners or specialists will also contribute to the programme: Sonia Alam, Irene Kaimakamis, Martin Kelleher, Mahul Patel, Mark Packer, Ravi Chauhan, Lakshmi Rasaratnum, Arwa Khaburi, Tony Perkins, Rowland Gardener and Lloyd Searson.

Programme description

The DClinDent in Paediatric Dentistry is a three-year, full-time programmes which allows the pursuit of specialist training, attainment of a Taught Professional Doctorate in Paediatric Dentistry and preparation for the Tri-Collegiate Specialty Membership Examination in Paediatric Dentistry administered by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The DClinDent aims to provide doctoral level educational opportunities to enable students to develop, consolidate and enhance their range of academic and clinical competencies to enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in Paediatric Dentistry.

Programme structure

The programme commences with an initial module of four to six weeks based in the clinical skills laboratory to allow the postgraduate to become familiar with the rationale and clinical techniques used in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute. During the initial months, there is an introduction to the dental literature and to research methodology. The remainder of the programme follows a consistent pattern where six sessions each week are spent in the clinical care of patients. The remaining four sessions each week are dedicated to the academic and research programmes as well as personal study.

The clinical component is taught mainly on clinic where students undertake supervised management of patients. In the first two years, the academic content of the programme will be delivered in the form of lectures and seminars with critical appraisal and discussion of the relevant literature. In the final year, the taught component of the course will be restricted to minimal use of lecture/seminar-format for the Systematic Review and Clinical Governance Project.

For Year 1 and Year 2 students, there will be a written assessment at the end of each term. In addition, Year 2 students will also be assessed on four unseen cases and on presentation of three personally-treated cases. Year 2 students will also submit a dissertation which they will defend during a viva-voce examination.

Successful completion of the first two years of the programme will allow students to proceed to Year 3 of the programme. In Year 3, students will be assessed on a clinical governance project, a systematic review of a topic related to Paediatric Dentistry, two fully documented patient case presentations and two unseen cases.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the DClinDent, the student will be able to:

  • critically understand both the clinical and research practice for the discipline of Paediatric Dentistry which will include the scientific basis and evidence-base that supports the speciality

Career opportunities

The programme is aimed at qualified dental practitioners who wish to further enhance their evidence-based knowledge and skills in Paediatric Dentistry to attain a Professional Doctorate and also at individuals preparing for the Tri-Collegiate Specialty Membership Examination in Paediatric Dentistry.

The latter facilitates access to the United Kingdom General Dental Council Specialist Register in Paediatric Dentistry, allowing an individual to practice as a specialist and with further training, appointment as a substantive/honorary NHS Consultant.

Likewise, for overseas students attainment of both a Professional Doctorate and a College Speciality Membership normally allows appointment within their own country at the Specialist/Consultant level.

Delivery

The course is part time over 18 months (approximately one full day per fortnight contact time) commencing in either January or July. We deliver the course through a combination of:

We select patients for planning, surgery and restoration of dental implants. As far as possible, you will see the same patients through their whole course of treatment.

We encourage that a dental nurse from your team accompanies you at skills training workshops and on teaching clinics. Nurses receive broad instruction in surgical and restorative implant procedures. They will also become familiar with implant product handling.

We run the course in partnership with Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The vast majority of the course takes place at the School of Dental Sciences and Dental Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Career

We provide professional development in an area not taught in detail at undergraduate level. We have had students start this course with no previous experience of implant dentistry. They have then progressed to carry out implant surgery and restoration in their own dental practices.

Staff

The course director is Mr Francis Nohl, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Francis has over 20 years of experience of the surgical and prosthodontic aspects of implant dentistry.

  • administrative staff.

Facilities

The School of Dental Sciences at Newcastle is one of the most modern and best equipped in the country. We have a spacious, purpose-built facility in the same building as the Dental Hospital. We're also next to the Medical School and Royal Victoria Infirmary teaching hospital. This makes us one of the largest integrated teaching and hospital complexes in the country.

The programme aims to produce paediatric dentists who are thinkers. Proficient and confident in all areas of clinical Paediatric Dentistry, and capable of literature critique and in the conduct of scientific research. Our students will be able to use their skills and knowledge to set up paediatric dentistry services in both community and hospital settings. 

On completion of the programme the postgraduate should be able to demonstrate the following: 

  • Proficiency in the clinical skills required of a paediatric dentist
  • A knowledge and understanding of communication skills relevant to paediatric dentistry
  • Self-motivation and the capacity to learn and think critically and analytically
  • An ability to analyse and evaluate scientific evidence

This is a modern course that aims to facilitate reflective learning, clinical judgements, critical analysis, evidence based practice and excellent, empathetic clinical care. The didactic course is predominantly seminar based. A tutor will facilitate the seminars but these will be student led. This means that the students will be expected to present the topic and to critically appraise the literature in the subject area, and present this both in writing and verbally. This approach supports the development of inquisitive thinking, deep learning and helps develop judgement. 

There will be a programme of lectures in selected topics. 

Year 1 students will benefit from a programme of ‘core’ lectures and seminars where they will join postgraduate students from other disciplines. 

Year 2 students will have a lecture programme focused on the management of medically compromised children and the clinical aspects of dental anomalies. 

Clinical Skills 

Students will have an average of six clinical sessions each week throughout the two year programme. Three or four of these will be for personal patient treatment. The other sessions will include trauma clinics/A&E/multidisciplinary clinics, operative treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia,and weekly consultant clinics. 

Research Project 

Students are expected to undertake a research project. This can be laboratory or clinically based. The Dissertation accounts for 33.3% of the course, it is hoped that the projects will be presented at national and international conferences and be suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Our aim is to develop you to the forefront of Paediatric Dentistry, as clinicians, teachers and future leaders. The clinical activity is predominantly based at St Thomas’ Hospital, Waterloo, with seminars and clinics at Guy’s Hospital, London Bridge and at King’s College Hospital, located in Denmark Hill.

  • Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of Paediatric Dentistry usually assessed by written examination;
  • One clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of coursework, clinical examination, oral examination and assessed essays
  • One research module assessed by a dissertation and an oral examination.

Extra information

As we are seeking to identify your suitability for this clinical environment, we expect our interviewees to adopt the dress code required of clinical dental students at King's. Further information will be given should you choose to apply. Entry to the programme is strictly dependent upon occupational health clearance that you are able to conduct exposure prone procedures (EPPs) before you start clinical work. This will assess your hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C antibody status, HIV and TB status following the completion of a health questionnaire and a further health check before or at enrolment.

If offered a place on the course, overseas students are advised to be tested locally and send the results of these checks with the questionnaire, prior to a separate full test in the UK at the College's Occupational Health Department before term begins. Funding

Note on mode of study: Selecting the part-time mode allows you access to study loans, but students must complete their studies in consecutive years and may not take any time away from study without authorised Extenuating Circumstances. Those selecting the flexible mode of study cannot access loans. They are able to take a break from the end of a year of study but must complete the programme within five years.

It is not possible to transfer between modes of study so students need to select the option that suits their personal circumstances. Students will be taught together irrespective of their mode of study.

Learning and teaching

We have new modern research facilities and laboratories for tissue culture, molecular biology, materials science and histology- microscopy. All laboratories have dedicated technical support and academic expertise to guide you.

Health clearance

If you’re starting a course that involves exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissues, you must conform to the national guidelines for the protection of patients, health care workers and students. Before admission to a clinical course we’ll need to check that you’re not an infectious carrier of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and that you do not have tuberculosis. A positive test doesn’t necessarily exclude you from dental training.

The University of Birmingham School of Dentistry is an acknowledged world leader in innovative online dental education. This new blended learning MSc in Restorative Dentistry has been designed and developed by a large team of experts, with an awareness of the needs of contemporary dentists.

The course will deliver progressive study through Certificate, Diploma and MSc levels providing you with detailed understanding and clinical skills for successful, predictable and enjoyable advanced restorative dentistry.

Teaching during the two-year course is delivered online and in two face-to-face residential courses in a highly accessible format designed by the School of Dentistry’s award-winning e-learning team. This two-year distance learning MSc programme will provide advanced training in the subjects most commonly carried out in clinical practice:

Course details

While the primary aim of this course is to enhance the quality and predictability of patient care, study for the MSc is expected to significantly increase dentist’s professional satisfaction and confidence when carrying out a wide range of restorative procedures.

The high level of practical content will take you through a unique programme of structured simulation and clinical exercises carried out both in practice and on the residential courses.

You will be provided with your own specialised models. By following the innovative series of step-by-step practical exercises, you will be able to optimise the latest restorative materials and equipment, and master advanced clinical techniques for a comprehensive range of treatments.

We expect the development of Masters level clinical skills to significantly increase your employability options, increase your potential for private income and access to prospective NHS advanced care pathways. Professional enhancement resulting from your MSc may also increase the potential for referrals of patients requiring advanced restorative management.

You will be supported at all stages by friendly, engaged tutors and will take part in the highly popular social programme based at the University’s outstanding campus. Finally, with no traditional written examinations, you can expect an enjoyable period of study, which will bring career-long rewards. 

Study materials are divided into seven interlinked modules over two years (for details on individual module content please see the module tab below):

  • Modules 1 and 2 focus on theoretical aspects covering the fundamental principles of restorative dentistry
  • Modules 3 – 6 are predominantly practical and are designed to help you master a comprehensive range of restorative procedures. The practical modules will provide advanced training in the four subject areas most commonly carried out in clinical practice:
  • Direct restorative techniques
  • Periodontics
  • Endodontics
  • Fixed and removable prosthodontics
  • Module 7 - Over the two-year programme you will carry out clinical work on your own patients and compile a comprehensive portfolio of procedures demonstrating advanced skill in all aspects of world-class, evidence-based, restorative dentistry. Module 7 will also provide the opportunity for focused study on a restorative subject of personal interest.

Learning and teaching

The programme’s flexible design allows you to study independently, 24/7, and at times suitable to you. The programme will contain two residential weeks based in Birmingham (one week per year), and will allow you to receive direct hands-on tuition from some of the world's most experienced dental educators. You will use the simulation suite at the new £50 million School of Dentistry.

Accommodation on the University's delightful campus and a full programme of social activities are included in the price of your Master’s Degree course.

In addition to clinical studies, Masters you will carry out a series of chair-side simulated practical procedures, using the latest contemporary materials and equipment and following online step-by-step technique guides unique to this programme.

You will have direct access to your personal tutor throughout all stages of the programme. As a fully enrolled student at the University of Birmingham your general requirements will be managed by highly experienced and qualified members of the distance learning team from the School of Dentistry.

Using email, telephone, Skype, and web-based discussions you will be able to communicate directly with your teachers, course administrators, and your fellow students.
