Teaching and learning

Taught modules are generally assessed through a combination of coursework and examination, although some modules are 100% coursework based (e.g. Data Analysis with Healthcare Application, Information Architecture and Project Management). Examinations focus on applying health informatics theories to realistic clinical scenarios. Coursework assignments centre on analysing real world problems, developing computational models and systems to solve these problems and producing written reports and documentation.

The taught component of the MSc is worth 66.67% and the independent research project is worth 33.33%. The independent research project allows students to conduct original research on a health informatics topic of their choice

Upon successful completion of eight modules and the independent research project, you will be awarded a master’s level qualification. The MSc comprises of 180 credits.

You will study six core modules and two elective modules. You will also undertake an independent research project.

Taught Core Modules

Core modules are mandatory and provide a detailed insight into key areas of health informatics. The modules are designed to complement each other and incrementally build specialist knowledge in the area. For example, the Electronic Health Records module focuses on important standards and techniques for securely capturing, storing and exchanging clinical data. Data Analysis with Healthcare demonstrates how to undertake statistical analyses of clinical data and report the results. In the Modelling Healthcare Decisions and Knowledge Management in Healthcare modules students learn about machine learning techniques that can be applied to clinical data and used to develop intelligent systems to support clinical decision making, including the cost effectiveness of those decisions in a variety of healthcare settings. The Telehealth and Mobile Applicationsmodules examines the emerging role of telehealth with a focus on new technologies and devices such as mobile apps, sensors and cloud computing that can be used to capture clinical data and deliver health services in environments such as patients’ homes. Course structure

The course covers three main areas:

  • data management – structuring and manipulating data for analysis purposes
  • data interpretation – statistical analysis using advanced features of industry-standard software such as SAS, SPSS and R
  • project management – the business-specific and strategic aspects of analytics.

You will learn how to assess project viability, propose sound business cases and strategies for analysis, perform and oversee analysis and manage large data projects successfully as well as developing your critical appraisal and presenting techniques. 

Based at our Moulsecoomb campus, you will have access to computer and research labs equipped with specialist, sophisticated software including SAS, SPSS Statistics and SPSS Modeller. Affordable student licences for home use are also available.

Syllabus

You will study five core modules. One of these involves a major project, potentially in collaboration with industry. You will also choose option modules, subject to availability, allowing you to focus on particular areas of interest.

Core modules

  • Data Management – provides an understanding of contemporary database management systems. Explores a methodology for database design and development, and develops skills in searching, reporting and analysing the data. Topics covered include database implementation and administration, data modelling and business intelligence.
  • Programming for Analytics – provides competencies in computer programming and algorithm design with emphasis on statistical programming and data analysis. The module covers both general issues of algorithm design and data structures and implementation issues in R and SAS.
  • Data Visualisation and Analysis – covers principles of data visualisation and specialised tools for data visualisation and analysis such as SAS Visual Analytics and Qlikview. The module also explores the mathematical and statistical theory behind data analysis.
  • Business Analytics Strategy and Practice – develops analytics-specific project planning concepts within this context, enabling students to design and manage analytics projects and present the business case to senior management.
  • Industry project – substantial, independent project undertaken with the supervision of a member of the teaching team. Projects are normally industry-based using real data sets.

Option modules*

  • Multivariate Analysis and Statistical Modelling – design statistical experiments, analyse multivariate data and apply classical and modern statistical modelling techniques. Enhances skills in the use of specialist software such as R, SPSS or SAS.
  • Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Data – find useful and relevant patterns, trends and anomalies in data sets, and summarise them in a form which may be used to support enterprise decisions – one of the great challenges of the information age. Emphasis is on the big, real-world picture rather than inside-the-box systems design engineering details. 
  • Stochastic Methods and Forecasting – an understanding of stochastic models and their applications in a business context. The module also covers forecasting methods with the emphasis on selecting the best forecasting method for a business problem and correct application of that method.
  • Risk Analysis and Retail Finance – introduction to the statistical methods used to estimate risk and reward in retail credit. The focus is on retail finance especially the provision of credit and lending services.
  • Medical Statistics – introduction to the methods originally designed for clinical trials and now being used in other contexts including sociology and marketing research. Topics include assessment of risk factors, comparing treatments and assessing survival data.

A wide variety of organisations draw upon data analytics specialists to help produce valuable information for decision-making, for example commodity price forecasting, customer intelligence, clinical trials, R&D and many other areas utilising large amounts of data.

Our MRes Experimental Cancer Medicine master's course will give nurses, doctors and clinical researchers the skills needed to work in early phase clinical studies.

You will learn how to master experimental cancer through a combination of traditional teaching and hands-on learning, spending a year as a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie while also taking four structured taught units.

The taught units will see you learn the details of designing and delivering Phase 1 clinical studies, understanding the pre-clinical data required before a clinical programme can commence, and how to optimise early clinical studies to provide evidence for progressing a promising drug into Phase II/III clinical testing.

Alongside the taught elements, you will be allocated to one or more clinical trials that are being conducted by The Christie experimental cancer medicine team. You will have a named trainer and be exposed to tasks required in the setup, delivery, interpretation and audit of a clinical study.

Nursing and physician students will be expected to participate in patient care, including new and follow-on patient clinics, treatment and care-giving episodes with patients.

For clinical trials coordinators, no direct patient contact is envisaged and duties will involve clinical trial setup, protocol amendments, database setup, data entry, costing and billing for clinical research.

You will be able to choose two aspects of your direct clinical trial research experience to write up for your two research projects in a dissertation format. This will give you the skills and knowledge required to critically report medical, scientific and clinically related sciences for peer review.

The primary purpose of the MRes in Experimental Cancer Medicine is to provide you with the opportunity to work within a premier UK Phase 1 cancer clinical trials unit and, through a mix of taught and experiential learning, master the discipline of Experimental Cancer Medicine.

Dr Natalie Cook is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie. She completed a PhD at Cambridge, investigating translational therapeutics and biomarker assay design in pancreatic cancer.

Professor Hughes is Chair of Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Strategic Director of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team at The Christie. He is a member of the research strategy group for Manchester Cancer Research Centre. He serves on the Biomarker evaluation review panel for CRUK grant applications.

Professor Hughes was previously Global Vice-President for early clinical development at AstraZeneca, overseeing around 100 Phase 0/1/2 clinical studies. He was previously Global Vice-President for early phase clinical oncology, having been involved in over 200 early phase clinical studies.

Dr Matthew Krebs is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie.

He has a PhD in circulating biomarkers and postdoctoral experience in single cell and ctDNA molecular profiling. He is Principal Investigator on a portfolio of phase 1 clinical trials and has research interests in clinical development of novel drugs for lung cancer and integration of biomarkers with experimental drug development.

Teaching and learning

Our course is structured around a 2:1 split between clinical-based research projects and taught elements respectively.

Taught course units will predominantly use lectures and workshops.

For the research projects, teaching and learning will take place through one-to-one mentoring from a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team.

The clinical and academic experience of contributors to this course will provide you with an exceptional teaching and learning experience.

About this degree

Students on the Health Data Analytics programme will learn about mathematical and statistical approaches to understanding health data, including operational research, machine learning and health economics. Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project, normally based at their place of work, which culminates in a piece of work written in the style of a journal article.

Teaching and learning

The programme is taught by 'blended learning', and therefore includes interactive online teaching and face-to-face lectures, seminars and workshops including substantial use of examples of real clinical systems. Assessment is through examination, critical evaluations, technical tasks, coursework and project reports, compulsory programming and database assignments, and the dissertation.

Careers

Health data analysts are employed by NHS England in a variety of roles, notably within NHS Improvement, assessing policy proposals and evaluating the economic or financial suitability of initatives. They are employed in acute trusts and in public health, mental health and other community-focused organisations to assist in the planning of services and the assessment of demand and to identify improvements in the organisation and management of services. Consultancy organisations providing services to the health sector also employ analysts as do data and IT organisations.

Employability

Our graduates will be skilled in the use of mathematical and statistical techniques for the manipulation and analysis of data. They will be familiar with state-of-the-art statistical packages but also have detailed practical experience of working with health data and the specific challenges and responsibilities that it entails. They will understand the processes by which data is collected and have insights into how that impacts its significance. These experiences will equip them to work in the NHS and also in a range of commercial and other organisations dealing with healthcare data.

The NHS needs not only more analytics staff, but also managers and decision makers who understand the importance of data and the role that analytics should be playing in shaping policy.

Our programme is delivered by a unique team including mathematicians, computer scientists and statisticians with expertise in the analysis of health data in a variety of forms and for a variety of purposes. The team are highly experienced not just in teaching and research but in the practical application of data analytics to the problems of health and healthcare organisations. We work closely with the NHS and with other commercial organisations to ensure our work is relevant and up-to-date.

Bioinformatics provides an important bridge between cutting edge science and the delivery of genomic medicine in clinical practice.

Demand for genetic testing and, therefore, clinical bioinformatics is increasing globally all the time, but there is a severe shortage of bioinformaticians able to analyse clinical genomic data.

Our fully-online PGCert is a practical, clinically-focused course aimed at providing the necessary skills to produce high quality bioinformatic workflows to analyse and interpret clinical genomic data.

You will be taught by a team that has successfully delivered the Clinical Bioinformatics Scientist Training Programme and has several years' experience training clinical bioinformaticians for the NHS.

The course is structured to include real-world clinical case studies and will focus on providing the necessary bioinformatic skills to produce bioinformatics workflows to analyse clinical genomic data.

The course has two introductory units:

Clinical Audit Project (10 credits)

Discuss how you can improve clinical practice to make a positive difference to your patients. The project includes how to plan an audit, collect different types of data and how to compile, analyse and interpret data and implement change.

Multidisciplinary Management of the Complex Case (20 credits)

This module addresses multi-disciplinary issues such as diagnosis and management of atypical facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Clinical Practice

Dealing with Complexity and Challenge (50 credits)

This module develops more complex skills in challenging situations in a supported environment.

About this degree

Students learn how to link and analyse large complex datasets. This innovative MSc programme aims to provide students with a strong knowledge and experience base for progressing to health service careers, particularly those looking to become clinical psychologists and clinical psychology researchers.

The Masters will equip you with an up to date knowledge of relevant theory and practical issues in UK mental health services, and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake research and development in academic and healthcare settings. Students will also have the opportunity to complete a work placement in an applied setting, providing valuable skills and experience that will aid career development.

This programme is intended for graduates in Psychology or related disciplines who are interested in progressing to careers in the health professions as practitioners, researchers or managers, and current health service professionals with a degree in Psychology or related disciplines who wish to enhance skills and knowledge in the areas covered by the programme as part of their continuing professional development. The Clinical Mental Health Sciences MSc integrates biological, psychological and social perspectives on mental health and caters both for psychology graduates and for clinicians wishing to undertake a broad-based, rigorous and flexible higher degree.

About this degree

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of current evidence regarding mental health problems and the interventions provided to address them, as well as enhancing their research skills. A wide range of options from across the School of Life and Medical Sciences at UCL allows students to tailor a programme that fully fits their needs.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of 1–2 core double modules (30–60 credits), 4–6 optional modules (60–90 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits).

Placement

The programme team support students in obtaining volunteer placements in relevant mental health care and research settings, but this is not a formal part of the course and is entirely optional.

For non-clinicians, the programme will be an excellent grounding for clinical training, such as in clinical psychology, or for embarking on a research career in mental health. Many graduates go on to research assistant, clinical support worker or assistant psychologist posts as a first destination. The programme is also intended to prepare students for PhD studies, also a major onward route. For clinicians, this is a great opportunity to gain a higher qualification through a programme based in a leading university department which can be closely tailored to your interests across clinical, research and management fields.

Employability

Our three-year MSc (Clin) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course enables dentists to train in the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

All units are based on the speciality of oral surgery, but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. You will undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. You will also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery and attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

The clinical component of the course consists of units covering surgical basic sciences, reflective oral surgery practices, dental tissues, bone disease and injury, soft tissues, and salivary tissue, pain and the temporomandibular joint.

You will attend weekly interactive seminars led by senior staff and invited guest speakers. Some of these have actor patients present to allow you to rehearse your clinical skills.

If you study the full three-year MSc, you will also attend external teaching events such as residential blocks for basic science applied to surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

You will become eligible to sit the Royal College of Surgeons examinations for Membership in Oral Surgery on completion of this MSc course.

Aims

The course aims to:

  • provide dental practitioners with the knowledge and skills to undertake oral surgery in the context of wider knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery;
  • provide you with the appropriate knowledge, understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and attitude to practice oral surgery in selected cases;
  • enable you to carry out critical evaluation, problem solving and use sound judgement for clinical problems;
  • give you the knowledge to criticalyl understand the issues involved in the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery;
  • ensure you are competent in the design and interpretation of original clinical research at the forefront of current dental research (including data collection and statistical analysis using appropriate computer software);
  • provide you with the knowledge and experience to plan, implement and complete a research project showing initiative and personal responsibility.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is by essay and SBAs throughout the course and related to the taught units. You will also maintain a clinical surgical logbook and undertake a clinical competency test. There is also an oral examination.

  • Research Methods: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor marked assignments.
  • Biostatistics: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor marked assignments.
  • Clinical component: This is assessed by written examination and clinical examination in the form of an oral presentation.
  • Dissertation (10,000-15,000 words).

Research Methods Component (15 credits): The aim is to equip you with skills related to design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically-related research.

Biostatistics component (15 credits): This unit aims to equip you with skills in data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Specialist Clinical Component: The aim of this component is to give you an understanding of the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients.

You’ll use various complementary learning modalities, interacting with colleagues and allied specialties in restorative dentistry to jointly manage patient care. Over the three years, you’ll learn sophisticated research methods and apply them in a scientific research investigation, with specific outcomes for each year of study.

The programme has been approved by RCS Edinburgh as recognised speciality training for eligibility to sit their MRD examinations in the three sub-specialisms of Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics.

There are 150 dental units with modern facilities for treatment under sedation, a well-equipped dental radiography department, oral pathology laboratories and a hospital dental production laboratory.

We have new modern research facilities and laboratories for tissue culture, molecular biology, materials science and histology- microscopy. All laboratories have dedicated technical support and academic expertise to guide you.

Health clearance

If you’re starting a course that involves exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissues, you must conform to the national guidelines for the protection of patients, health care workers and students. Before admission to a clinical course we’ll need to check that you’re not an infectious carrier of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and that you do not have tuberculosis. A positive test doesn’t necessarily exclude you from dental training.
