The programme enables students to gain detailed knowledge about modern theories and models in relation to psychopathology and psychological assessment as well as about effective psychological interventions and therapies. The main educational aims of the programme are to provide you with a thorough knowledge about clinical psychology as an academic and professional discipline, and to develop your research competence in a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods of particular relevance to clinical psychology. Core knowledge areas such as psychopathology, psychological assessment and various types of psychological intervention are each taught in specific modules. You will be introduced to leading theories or models in each field and the scientific evidence on which they are based will be critically discussed. Important research paradigms and controversies dominating current scientific debates within clinical psychology will be presented, and you will learn and practice how to critically appraise published research.

You will receive extensive training in a range of essential research skills and we will be discussing various types of research design for investigating the aetiology of mental health problems, for evaluating the effectiveness of psychological therapies and for auditing mental health services. The research training also includes advanced methods of statistical data analysis with exercises in SPSS and you will learn how to professionally report and communicate the findings. Qualitative research methods, for example, Grounded Theory will be taught in a specialist module and you will learn to use software for the coding and interpretation of transcripts. Finally, each student will be allocated to a senior researcher for a Research Apprenticeship, a particularly valuable learning experience enabling you to prepare an impressive MSc Research Project which will be your most important academic achievement of the programme.

The programme also includes a module Professional Clinical Skills introducing you to the role and competencies of professional clinical psychologists within mental health care settings as well as professional standards and ethical considerations. This MSc aims to encourage an integrated understanding of child development and a range of childhood disorders, and to give students an opportunity to apply this understanding in a clinical setting through a supervised placement in the second year within a mental health service.

About this degree

The programme draws together theory, research and therapeutic thinking from a range of perspectives, including clinical and cognitive psychology, systemic thinking, psychoanalysis and neuroscience. In a workshop setting, students develop competencies in engagement, assessment and evaluation, and practical skills necessary for therapeutic work with children and families. These are then put into practice during the clinical placement.

This two-year MSc has a total value of 270 credits. Each year students complete modules to the value of 135 credits.

Dissertation/research project

All MSc students undertake a research portfolio which may include both a developmental and a clinical focus, such as the evaluation and understanding of clinical and therapeutic services for children and young people. This culminates in a dissertation made up of an 8,000-word journal paper and a poster.

Teaching and learning

In year one students attend weekly lectures complemented by small group seminars. Modules focusing on clinical skills are classroom based. In year two, as well as taking further modules, students move into a 2-3 days per week placement in a child and adolescent mental health (CAMHS) setting, supervised by an experienced clinician. Assessment is by a mixture of coursework, examinations and the dissertation.

Since the MSc was established in 2011 graduates have gone on to work with children and families in various therapeutic settings, or to undertake further doctoral-level clinical training, such as clinical psychology, child psychotherapy, or counselling psychology. Health Data Analytics is the activity of extracting insights from health data, either to shape national policy, manage local organisations or inform the care of an individual. As more and more data becomes available electronically, the demand for skilled and trained individuals to take advantage of it becomes increasingly urgent.

About this degree

Students on the Health Data Analytics programme will learn about mathematical and statistical approaches to understanding health data, including operational research, machine learning and health economics. They will learn the fundamentals of how health data is collected, represented, stored and processed as well as how to analyse it effectively and how best to present analyses to have an impact on decisions.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (45 credits), five optional modules (75 credits) and a research project (60 credits).

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project, normally based at their place of work, which culminates in a piece of work written in the style of a journal article.

Teaching and learning

The programme is taught by 'blended learning', and therefore includes interactive online teaching and face-to-face lectures, seminars and workshops including substantial use of examples of real clinical systems. Assessment is through examination, critical evaluations, technical tasks, coursework and project reports, compulsory programming and database assignments, and the dissertation.

Careers

Health data analysts are employed by NHS England in a variety of roles, notably within NHS Improvement, assessing policy proposals and evaluating the economic or financial suitability of initatives. They are employed in acute trusts and in public health, mental health and other community-focused organisations to assist in the planning of services and the assessment of demand and to identify improvements in the organisation and management of services. Consultancy organisations providing services to the health sector also employ analysts as do data and IT organisations.

Employability

Our graduates will be skilled in the use of mathematical and statistical techniques for the manipulation and analysis of data. They will be familiar with state-of-the-art statistical packages but also have detailed practical experience of working with health data and the specific challenges and responsibilities that it entails. They will understand the processes by which data is collected and have insights into how that impacts its significance. These experiences will equip them to work in the NHS and also in a range of commercial and other organisations dealing with healthcare data.

Our flexible Medical Ultrasound course is designed for healthcare professionals undertaking obstetrics, gynaecology and / or abdominal ultrasound training.

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for a range of health care professionals who have experience in radiography, nursing, midwifery or other related professions. The course enables students to achieve the academic qualifications and clinical skills needed to pursue a career in ultrasound or to develop current skills further.

Students need a clinical placement in a recognised department, to engage in a wide range of ultrasound examinations for the duration of the course.

Objectives

City’s Medical Ultrasound course offers flexible study options for healthcare professionals undertaking obstetrics, gynaecology and / or abdominal ultrasound training and for those wishing to develop their skills further using work based learning options.

Our expert staff provide a supportive environment, encouraging students to develop their academic abilities and clinical skills in preparation for working as a sonographer. Students learn a range of subjects to enable them to explore the underpinning knowledge of safe, effective and evidence-based ultrasound practice, with which to help them develop clinical skills in their own department. Teaching is also supported by specialist guest speakers who provide current, relevant course material.

Students can achieve competency to practice if they successfully complete both academic and clinical components of the programme to PgC level or above.

Placements

A clinical placement is required in a recognised ultrasound department, to provide a wide range of clinical experience and supervision. Students should have their own clinical placement arranged prior to application, with supervised training arranged for an average of three days per week.

The placement needs to provide support for a wide range of clinical examinations. In addition to hands-on clinical experience you need a named clinical supervisor/assessor to provide support during the course. The supervisor must attend supervisor training and provide regular updates on your clinical progress to the clinical co-ordinator.

Academic facilities

The ultrasound clinical skills suite is equipped with a real-time ultrasound machine and simulators. The facilities are used for tutorials, self-directed study and formative monitoring of clinical skills.

Students have access to the MedaPhor simulator during the working week and remote cloud based access to tutorials and resources.

Using a flipped classroom approach to teaching and learning ensure that a range of online lectures are available for learning and revision.

Teaching and learning

A blended learning approach is used: linking academic theory to clinical practice via work-based learning; formal key note lectures; seminars; film viewing tutorials; demonstrations/workshops; e-learning; shared learning; self-directed study and online case discussions. Participation in the learning is an essential component of the course.

The programme team consists of academic staff, many of whom are still practicing clinically. Guest lecturers are invited to share expert knowledge on a range of topics, such as fetal cardiology, fetal medicine and contrast ultrasound.

The department’s academic staff are highly regarded across the institution, with our current programme director, Gill Harrison, winning the institution's prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Activities include online lectures and quizzes, lectures, tutorials, workshops and skills suite activities, group activities and group work, games and online case discussions.

A variety of assessment methods are used to cater for a range of learning styles and provide a link between theory and practice. Assessment methods include objective structured examinations, online case discussions, oral and/or poster presentations, written assignments, clinical portfolio and clinical competency assessments.

Modules

As a student on the Medical Ultrasound course you will learn the underpinning theory of ultrasound production, safe and effective practice, normal and abnormal ultrasound appearances and associated imaging pathways.

You will be able to select from a number of clinical options including obstetrics, gynaecology and / or abdominal ultrasound. Additional clinical areas can be studied via work-based learning modules, if appropriate clinical support is available within the students' clinical department. The course is also designed to develop transferable skills to support clinical practice development.

Modules will take place over one or two days per week, depending on the selected module options. The time in lectures varies, dependent on the nature of the module.

Core modules - core modules and specific named clinical modules have a blended learning approach, with online lectures, online quizzes and discussions supported by lectures, tutorials and workshops. The average contact time per module is approximately 30 to 35 hours.

Students progressing to MSc must undertake:

Career prospects

On completion of a postgraduate certificate or diploma you can apply for jobs as an autonomous practitioner, working in the NHS or private practice. Many of our graduates have become advanced practitioners, developing additional skills during their career, whilst others have travelled to overseas to enhance their careers.

MSc graduates have also become managers of ultrasound departments, leading service change and developing services to improve patient care. A number of graduates have developed their role in specialist areas, where they undertake research and training and engage in dissemination of their work at national and international conferences and in peer review publications. Some of our graduates return to provide keynote lectures to future generations of ultrasound students or even take on the role of Programme Director running ultrasound programmes.

You can also become an independent practitioner, setting up your own company, providing services to local populations or travel the world and experience different ways of working. Most sonographers are employed at band seven in the NHS.

The Clinical Genetics MSc has a specific focus on delivery of the clinical service to patients including risk analysis and application of modern genetic and genomic technologies in medical genetics research and in diagnostics and population screening.

Genetic Disease and Clinical Practice

This course is designed in collaboration with the West of Scotland Regional Genetics Service to give students a working knowledge of the principles and practice of Clinical Genetics and Genomics which will allow them to evaluate, choose and interpret appropriate genetic investigations for individuals and families with genetic disease. The link from genotype to phenotype, will be explored, with consideration of how this knowledge might contribute to new therapeutic approaches.

Distress or Disorder: Reactions to a medical diagnosis

This course outlines the process of psychosocial adjustment to a diagnosis or test result allowing participants to establish if and when a distress reaction develops into an adjustment disorder. The implications of diagnosis are explored and evidence considered allowing informed decisions about appropriate referrals to other agencies.

Patient Empowerment: Supporting decisions relating to new diagnoses

This course reflects on evidence and experience to explore the psychological and social impact of a diagnosis, or illness, and provides strategies to support resilience and coping in patients. Factors related to lived experience, personal beliefs and values, culture, adjustment processes, decision-making, misconceptions, secrecy and guilt are considered to equip participants in the promotion of patient-centred care.

Effective listening and communication skills

With a focus on experiential learning and student led study, this course outlines the role of counselling skills to facilitate adjustment and to allow an individual to come to terms with change in a safe way to minimise impact. The focus will be on the theory supporting counselling, developing key listening and communication skills and on establishing reflective practice.

Case Investigations in Medical Genetics and Genomics

Students will work in groups to investigate complex clinical case scenarios: decide appropriate testing, analyse results from genetic tests, reach diagnoses where appropriate and, with reference to the literature, generate a concise and critical group report.

Clinical Genomics

This course will provide an overview of the clinical applications of genomic approaches to human disorders, particularly in relation to clinical genetics, discussion the methods and capabilities of the new technologies. Tuition and hands-on experience in data analysis will be provided, including the interpretation of next generation sequencing reports.

Disease Screening in Populations

This course will cover the rationale for, and requirements of, population screening programmes to detect individuals at high risk of particular conditions, who can then be offered diagnostic investigations. Students will work in groups to investigate and report on, a screening programme of their choice from any country.

Dissertation

The course will provide students with the opportunity to carry out an independent investigative project in the field of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

Teaching and Learning Methods

A variety of methods are used, including problem-based learning, case-based learning, lectures and tutorials. These are supplemented by a wide range of course-specific electronic resources for additional learning and self-assessment. As a result, you will develop a wide range of skills relevant to careers in clinical genetics. These skills include team-working and data interpretation. You will use the primary scientific literature as an information resource, although textbooks such as our own Essential Medical Genetics will also be useful. You will have the options of: attending genetic counselling clinics and gaining hands-on experience and guidance in using software and online resources for genetic diagnosis and for the evaluation of pathogenicity of DNA sequence variants.

Objectives

Knowledge and critical understanding of clinical research methods are becoming increasingly important skills for all professionals in the health, social care and private sectors, where an evidence based approach, supported by academic rigour is crucial to decision making, clinical practice and delivery of integrated services.

The MRes Clinical Research will provide you with training in quantitative and qualitative research methods and applied data analysis from basic to advanced levels as well as provide opportunities to apply this research knowledge to clinical settings.

We will enable you to produce high quality, publishable research and give you the skills and knowledge to develop your clinical academic research career to become a leader in your clinical field.

Placements

Students undertake a work-based research placement with a research centre/ unit/ project team of their choosing. The purpose of the placement is to enable the student to develop and refine awareness, knowledge, understanding, experience, and skills in undertaking research in clinical practice. Students identify their own research site, and negotiate mutually beneficial learning objectives for the time period in placement.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is conducted via a mixture of lectures, class discussions and seminars, student presentations, poster presentations, analysis of case studies, worked examples, interactive computer-based exercises, an online VLE and self-directed reading.

Assessment

Formal assessments will be conducted via: essays, a systematic review, a research proposal, critical reviews, written examinations and a research project on an approved topic.

In addition, there are short practical assignments throughout the course during sessions.

Postgraduate students are expected to allocate an average of 150 hours of taught and self-directed learning per 15-credit module. Subject to satisfactory results, students progress to clinical case studies supervised by relevant clinical staff. The clinical case studies provide training in evidence based nutritional practice for health professionals. Students assess and evaluate the medical history of patients with particular reference to nutritional needs in a detailed, in depth manner, with reference to national and international guidelines, current literature and current treatment protocols. Students discuss the contribution of nutrition to the cause, progress and treatment of the disease. They reflect on clinical practice, including how treatment guidelines have been applied, and if there have been any barriers or issues which have prevented this.

About this degree

You will receive extensive training in research methods via a postgraduate statistics module and will complete a postgraduate dissertation in a related topic. The cognitive psychology suite houses specialist psychology equipment. This includes eye tracking equipment which is capable of studying the eye movements of individuals whilst they complete cognitive tasks. The suite includes EEG (electroencephalogram) and ECG (electrocardiogram) facilities for recording electrical activity in the heart and scalp. There is also a driving simulator which is currently being used by postgraduate students to complete a study which examines the effects of stressors on driving performance.

Students who are unsure whether they should take Clinical Mental Health should discuss it with the course team. It is in general unsuitable for those who are already qualified clinicians. 

Optional modules

Students who take the Clinical Mental Health module will take four optional modules, including at least one from the Division of Psychiatry. Students who do not take this module will take six optional modules, including at least three from the Division of Psychiatry.

Research project/report

All students undertake a final project. This may be a research project, to be reported as a paper of up to 7,000 words ready for submission to a specified journal, a blog of 1,000 words and a 20-minute talk, or a clinical project of 10,000 words reporting on a clinical topic or service evaluation.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops, with considerable use of supporting online learning. Assessment methods include one unseen examination, coursework including designing questionnaires and protocols and analysing data, giving talks and presenting posters, and a final report in the format of a journal paper or brief for clinicians or service planners.

Placement

The programme team support students in obtaining volunteer placements in relevant mental health care and research settings, but this is not a formal part of the course and is entirely optional.

Careers

For non-clinicians, the programme will be an excellent grounding for clinical training, such as in clinical psychology, or for embarking on a research career in mental health. Many graduates go on to research assistant, clinical support worker or assistant psychologist posts as a first destination. The programme is also intended to prepare students for PhD studies, also a major onward route. For clinicians, this is a great opportunity to gain a higher qualification through a programme based in a leading university department which can be closely tailored to your interests across clinical, research and management fields.

Employability

Students will be taught by leading experts in their fields, will gain a strong clinical understanding of mental health, and will be able to develop their skills in research, service design and evaluation, and writing and presenting. Previous Division of Psychiatry Master’s graduates have been enthusiastic about their career enhancement, both through their programme and the connections they have made through it. We offer to find all students a placement (if they wish) for one day a week in which relevant clinical and/or research experience is obtained. A large proportion of our first cohort of graduates have gone on to paid employment in relevant areas of mental health, especially research assistant, clinical support worker, psychological wellbeing practitioner and assistant psychologist posts. This course is designed to advance and enhance a career in Clinical Research in the pharmaceutical industry, health service, contract research organisations, regulatory authorities, data management organisations and in medical writing.

It aims to provide the postgraduate students with an enhanced level of knowledge, understanding and skills in clinical research. It presents an overview of clinical trial processes and the regulations for bringing in a new chemical entity, and it provides an enhanced level of knowledge and understanding of therapeutic areas and their treatments in relation to clinical trials, drug registrations and drug safety.

The course is designed to increase the knowledge and skills of the student not only in Clinical Research but also in a diverse range of therapeutic areas. This allows the individual to move confidently between these therapeutic areas and therefore increase their potential value to employers. In the dissertation year, students are encouraged to carry out projects which have direct value to their employer and this potentiates the worth of their studies.

Structure

The programme is studied over 3 calendar years of part-time study and is in a modular format. 

Taught modules are undertaken in the first two years, two in each year. Participants who successfully complete these modules may either receive a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Clinical Research as an exit award, or progress on to carry out an individual project in the third year for the MSc qualification.

Teaching

The course will be taught through a series of lectures and workshops, coursework assignments and course journal preparations aimed at developing transferable skills in critical analysis.

Self-directed study forms an important part of the course, and you will be directed in study skills and guided in the areas for study. You will be expected to manage your own time to undertake significant independent study during the dissertation phase in particular.

 Students are expected to attend all timetabled sessions and are also expected to engage in independent study. Course materials are delivered in our Virtual Learning environment (Learning Central). 

Assessment

Knowledge and understanding are assessed both formatively and summatively by written examinations and by performance in course work, practice based course-work assignments, project work and dissertation.

Project work including the design of clinical report forms and other practice based assignments and case studies are assessed from written reports with feedback.  Statistical skills are acquired via didactive methods and tested using practice-based scenarios, likewise in relation to medicines safety and the detection of fraud in clinical research.  Critical appraisal skills are acquired throughout the programme through the interpretation and analysis of published clinical research data.  Production of the dissertation requires a substantive literature review and leads to enhanced written and presentational skills, the dissertation being examined by thesis.

About this degree

This programme enables participants to develop their research and analytical capabilities in order to:

Dissertation/report

All MA students submit either a dissertation or a report.

The dissertation is based on original empirical research, whereas the report is based on secondary research, often taking the form of a literature review.

Both options have a prerequisite module which is designed to support the research that you plan to undertake. This module should normally be taken in the academic year prior to commencing the dissertation or report, but can be taken in the same academic year.

Teaching and learning

This programme is delivered through a combination of face-to-face daytime and evening sessions and online distance learning. Assessment is by coursework assignments, including 5,000-word essays with reflective components.
