The one year, part time Postgraduate Certificate offers an exciting opportunity for those working within clinical audit to pursue a taught postgraduate qualification. The overall aims of the course is to improve the quality and effectiveness of clinical audit projects and programmes; enhance the value of clinical audit at individual, team and organisation level and to support the professional development of those working in clinical audit – whether at clinical or non-clinical level.

Course Aims

The programme will:
• explore clinical audit within wider health policy and regulatory contexts
• promote greater understanding of governance, quality, assurance and the management of risk within and between healthcare organisations
• equip students with an appreciation of system design, thereby enabling the critical review and further development of clinical audit rameworks
• develop practical skills in clinical audit
• enable participants to effectively engage and motivate others so as to bring about change and quality improvement
• actively support the development of clinical audit within the NHS (or other, health-related) organisations

The PG Certificate will normally be available part time, over one year. However, it may be possible for students to take the PG Certificate over two years, by agreement. A variety of teaching methods will be used in both the face-to-face and online elements of the course. In addition to lectures, presentations and tutor-led discussion, there will be opportunities for students to undertake group exercises as well as complete an extended project relevant to their own role.

The PG Certificate requires successful completion of four, 15 credit modules. The modules are:

Module One: Governance and Assurance in Healthcare
This module will enable participants to critically consider the governance requirements and regulatory frameworks which apply to healthcare organisations and within this the role and value of clinical audit as a source of assurance. The key focus will be on governance and healthcare in the NHS, although the module will draw on developments in other sectors and countries as these have influenced the requirements placed on healthcare organisations in the United Kingdom.

• Understanding the NHS: Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships
• What is Governance and Why Does It Matter?
• Governance, Risk, & Assurance within the NHS
• Assuring the Quality of Care: The Pivotal Role of Clinical Audit

Module Two: Clinical Audit:
This module considers what constitutes robust clinical audit (at both strategy, programme and project level) and explores the value of clinical audit at all levels of an organisation - locating this within the wider quality framework for an organisation or team. The module also provides an opportunity for students to critically review the key stages within the clinical audit cycle, develop their skills in planning and undertaking audits and identify the key challenges involved in managing clinical audit projects and programmes.

Module Three: Managing Change and Quality Improvement:
All healthcare organisations are dependent on their staff, so how do you get the best from them? This module explores the core concepts associated with change so as to enable students to effectively manage the behavioural and organisational issues associated with audit and quality improvement programmes. The aim is for students to (i) develop strategies and actions and (ii) be able to apply a range of different tools and techniques which together enable them to contribute to the successful delivery of sustainable change across professional, functional and hierarchical boundaries.

Module Four: Realising the Potential of Quality Audit:
This module requires students to bring together the knowledge and skills from earlier in their programme of study and to purposefully apply these in a well researched, extended project. Students will be required to critically examine a self-chosen empirical issue or, preferably, a specific work-related problem and develop a related action plan.

Teaching & Assessment

The Postgraduate Certificate is assessed through coursework. This will involve completion of individual and group exercises together with submission of a formal assignment at the end of each module. There will be a choice of assignment subjects for each module and assignment titles, submission deadlines and reading lists will be supplied at the start of the course.

Further Study:
The PG Certificate in Medical Science (Clinical Audit) provides a bespoke introduction to clinical audit at postgraduate level and is a qualification in its own right. However, should students wish to continue their studies, the course has been designed to act as a precursor to further academic study at Keele University and other institutions. Students who successfully complete the PGCertificate can, for example, progress onto the Diploma or Masters in Medical Science within the Faculty of Health at Keele.

Why study Clinical Audit and Research for Healthcare at Dundee?

In recent years there has been a rapid growth in clinical audit and research to evaluate treatment interventions and improvement in patient care and any associated cost benefits. This has led to an increasing number of healthcare professionals being exposed, often for the first time, to clinical audit and research methods. This rapid growth has been recognised here at the Department of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, which has an active and expanding Clinical Audit and Research Unit.

The Clinical Audit & Research Unit is a joint venture between Industry, Dundee Teaching Hospitals Trust and the University of Dundee. It is involved in a number of clinical audit projects relating to orthopaedics and provides clinical and statistical expertise in audit of process, project planning, data processing and trial control mechanisms.

The combination of expertise in postgraduate education delivered by open learning methods, coupled with an active research environment, has enabled us to develop a programme specifically tailored to deliver the skills needed by the healthcare profession to successfully undertake research and audit.

Teaching & Assessment

This course is taught by staff from the department of Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery based in the School of Medicine.

The programme consists of nine learning units. These units may be studied individually so that you can choose to study the units you wish. Each unit requires approximately 100 notational hours of study.

If you successfully complete all the unit assignments, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate by the University of Dundee. You will be able to use this to demonstrate that you have undertaken the programme successfully.

How you will be taught

Learning Materials:
The programme is supplied in a presentation folder containing a student handbook and the nine units. The student handbook provides information about the structure, recommended reference materials and the tutor support system. For every unit there is a study guide that explains the objectives of that unit (what you will have learned by the end of the unit) and leads you through the learning material, section by section, using text, illustrations, activities, exercises and references to the recommended textbooks.

You monitor your own progress through the unit by completing the self-assessment questions, which are placed at regular intervals throughout the text, and checking your answers against those provided in the study guide. When you need to discuss any aspects of your study, you may contact your tutor for support.

When you need to discuss any aspects of your study, you may contact your tutor for support. Your tutor is available for direct contact by telephone at set times during the week, as specified in the module guide for each module. A telephone answering service is available after office hourse and you may also contact your tutor by email, post or fax. How you will be assessed

Formative assessment consists of self-assessment questions in the Study Guides. Summative assessment consists of a tutor-marked assignment at the end of each module. The exact nature of each assignment is designed to reflect the aim of the module. To qualify for the Certificate students will need to complete and pass the assignments in all nine modules undertaken.

This programme orientates internationally qualified dental graduates to that of a UK dental practitioner by providing a comprehensive grounding in six key training areas: basic sciences and their application to modern day dental practice, applied principles of clinical dentistry, clinical skills, communication skills, professionalism, management and leadership.

The course is delivered under three broad headings:

1. Taught
Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Relevant basic sciences including anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology with respect to health and how these are altered in disease states
-Patho-physiological and anatomical basis for clinical signs of oral and craniofacial health and disease
-Relationships between dental disease, population risk factors and the preventative measures

And integrate this knowledge to dental areas through discussions in:

-Basic and clinical science associated with pharmacology and therapeutics used in dentistry
-The science underpinning the key properties of dental materials and evaluate their clinical applications


2. Clinical
Students' clinical skills will be augmented through practical, laboratory based sessions using typodont teeth set in a manikin head.

-Operative skills will be taught to ensure students can undertake skilled, competent and safe dental procedures including: cavity design, extra-coronal restorations and non-surgical endodontic treatment.
-Simulated clinical techniques will be undertaken and the student will be introduced to decision making processes leading to tooth loss and replacement and execution of appropriate operative techniques for all stages of planned prosthodontic treatment (excluding bridges and implants) in conjunction, as necessary, with other specialists and technicians.

Students will observe current UK dental practise via clinics in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, paediatrics, prosthodontics, radiology and orthodontics.

Tutoring in Objective Structured Clinical Reasoning Examinations (OSCE) and Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) Exams will be carried out using the advanced facilities in the state of the art dental skills laboratory.

3. Research
The research component consists of a structured literature review and clinical audit report. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Critical appraisal and analysis of scientific and clinical literature
-How clinical audit identifies problems in clinical service and helps formulate solutions
-Appropriate tools for searching the literature (search engines, web-based libraries, electronic documents)

Students will develop the analytical skills to be able to:

-Critically appraise, analyse and evaluate scientific papers and clinical literature applying the principles of evidence based dentistry
-Evaluate evidence of the latest developments in Dentistry
-Communication skills will be developed throughout the taught, clinical and research elements of the course with specific topic presentations during seminars as well as through journal club reports and presentations on dental and clinical governance topics.

Clinical Audit Project (10 credits)

Discuss how you can improve clinical practice to make a positive difference to your patients. The project includes how to plan an audit, collect different types of data and how to compile, analyse and interpret data and implement change.

Multidisciplinary Management of the Complex Case (20 credits)

This module addresses multi-disciplinary issues such as diagnosis and management of atypical facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Clinical Practice

Dealing with Complexity and Challenge (50 credits)

This module develops more complex skills in challenging situations in a supported environment.

Teaching will take place in small groups as a series of modules covering case based learning platforms and enhanced clinical education at the Leeds Dental Institute.

About this degree

The programme teaches a broad and deep understanding of endodontology, enabling students to apply appropriate clinical strategies from first principles. Mentored coaching specifically targets development of independent learning skills, with the aim of achieving long-term mastery.

Students undertake modules to the value of 360 credits. The third year of study is non-credit bearing and will include clinical training, didactic teaching and completion of clinical audit.

This course is for you if you’re a Psychology graduate with an interest in clinical training, and you want to strengthen your credentials for the competitive entry process. The course is run jointly by the Department of Psychology and the Coventry-Warwick Clinical Psychology Doctorate programme. Currently, we can only consider you if you’re a UK/EU student with a Psychology degree that provides Graduate Basis for Chartership (British Psychological Society). This policy reflects that UK doctoral training in clinical psychology is available primarily to UK/EU citizens.

You will study a range of modules on clinical research methods, evidence-based practice in adult, older adult and child/adolescent populations and clinical case analysis. You will also have the opportunity to do a six-month NHS placement as an honorary assistant psychologist, which is particularly valuable if you’re
considering a career in the clinical profession.

The majority of our graduates proceed to NHS assistantships and clinical PhD studentships. Many of our postgraduates have progressed to DClin courses, including Coventry-Warwick, Institute of Psychiatry (Kings), Oxford, Manchester and Trinity College Dublin.

Course overview

This course is designed for Psychology graduates who plan to apply for admission to doctoral training programmes in Clinical Psychology, and are in the process of strengthening their credentials for the competitive entry process.

The taught components of the course include modules on research methods tailored to clinical applications, evidence-based practice in adult, older adult, and child/adolescent populations, learning disabilities, and clinical case analysis. Teaching provision is shared between academics with research interests in the relevant topics and practising clinicians with current experience in Psychology services within the NHS.

The practical component of the course is a unique 6-month research/audit placement in a local NHS trust that maintains a training relationship with our doctoral programme. Students are assigned to placements, where they will work with Clinical Psychologists on clinical audit and research, as applicable to the specific setting of the placement. On-site supervision is provided by a clinical supervisor. Every effort is made to match students' interests with the available placement opportunities. The formal output of the placement is a written dissertation comprising a literature review and a report of the research work carried out during the placement, to be completed under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching consists of lectures and seminars plus additional workshops. You will have an average of 8 – 10 hours of lectures and 4 hours of seminars per week in Term 1. Assessment is mainly by submission of assignments and a class test.

In Term 2 you will be out on placement for 3 days a week. This will enable you to gain practical experience of working with Clinical Psychologists within NHS trusts. You will be assigned to 6 month long placements during which you will complete 2 pieces of academic work.

NOTE: This course will not lead to a license to practice as a Clinical Psychologist. It is a qualification that will significantly strengthen students' academic and work experience credentials required for entry into the professional doctoral training that is required for licensed clinical practice.

Our MRes Experimental Cancer Medicine master's course will give nurses, doctors and clinical researchers the skills needed to work in early phase clinical studies.

You will learn how to master experimental cancer through a combination of traditional teaching and hands-on learning, spending a year as a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie while also taking four structured taught units.

The taught units will see you learn the details of designing and delivering Phase 1 clinical studies, understanding the pre-clinical data required before a clinical programme can commence, and how to optimise early clinical studies to provide evidence for progressing a promising drug into Phase II/III clinical testing.

Alongside the taught elements, you will be allocated to one or more clinical trials that are being conducted by The Christie experimental cancer medicine team. You will have a named trainer and be exposed to tasks required in the setup, delivery, interpretation and audit of a clinical study.

Nursing and physician students will be expected to participate in patient care, including new and follow-on patient clinics, treatment and care-giving episodes with patients.

For clinical trials coordinators, no direct patient contact is envisaged and duties will involve clinical trial setup, protocol amendments, database setup, data entry, costing and billing for clinical research.

You will be able to choose two aspects of your direct clinical trial research experience to write up for your two research projects in a dissertation format. This will give you the skills and knowledge required to critically report medical, scientific and clinically related sciences for peer review.

Dr Natalie Cook is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie. She completed a PhD at Cambridge, investigating translational therapeutics and biomarker assay design in pancreatic cancer.

Professor Hughes is Chair of Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Strategic Director of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team at The Christie. He is a member of the research strategy group for Manchester Cancer Research Centre. He serves on the Biomarker evaluation review panel for CRUK grant applications.

Professor Hughes was previously Global Vice-President for early clinical development at AstraZeneca, overseeing around 100 Phase 0/1/2 clinical studies. He was previously Global Vice-President for early phase clinical oncology, having been involved in over 200 early phase clinical studies.

Dr Matthew Krebs is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie.

He has a PhD in circulating biomarkers and postdoctoral experience in single cell and ctDNA molecular profiling. He is Principal Investigator on a portfolio of phase 1 clinical trials and has research interests in clinical development of novel drugs for lung cancer and integration of biomarkers with experimental drug development.

Teaching and learning

Our course is structured around a 2:1 split between clinical-based research projects and taught elements respectively.

Taught course units will predominantly use lectures and workshops.

For the research projects, teaching and learning will take place through one-to-one mentoring from a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team.

The clinical and academic experience of contributors to this course will provide you with an exceptional teaching and learning experience.

One of the most important skills of pharmacists is to communicate their expertise in a manner that the public can understand and accept. The DClinDent in Orthodontics is a three-year, full-time programme which will allow the candidate to achieve specialist-level training in orthodontics, together with a taught professional Doctorate, and will also prepare them for the Speciality Membership Examinations of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of the UK.

The DClinDent aims to provide doctoral level educational opportunities to enable students to develop, consolidate and enhance their range of academic and clinical competencies to enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in each clinical discipline.

Programme structure

The programme begins with an introduction of core topics, followed by an introduction to laboratory facilities and the basics of wire-bending skills, appliance design and appliance construction and mechanics.

Clinical patient care is also established early within the first term and continues throughout the three year programme. Half of a student’s time is spent treating patients under supervision (20 hours per week).

Candidates will undertake a yearly audit project and will present this at the annual departmental audit day.

The academic programme is 9 structured terms of theoretical seminars and tutorials, with diagnostic tests of clinical ability carried out regularly.

For Year 1 and Year 2 students, there will be a written exam at the end of each term.

In addition to the above, at the end of Year 2, students will also be examined as follows:

  • 2 written papers (single best answer questions) (usually in June)
  • 3 unseen cases (diagnostic tests) (usually in June)

The DClinDent in Paediatric Dentistry is a three-year, full-time programmes which allows the pursuit of specialist training, attainment of a Taught Professional Doctorate in Paediatric Dentistry and preparation for the Tri-Collegiate Specialty Membership Examination in Paediatric Dentistry administered by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The DClinDent aims to provide doctoral level educational opportunities to enable students to develop, consolidate and enhance their range of academic and clinical competencies to enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in Paediatric Dentistry.

Programme structure

The programme commences with an initial module of four to six weeks based in the clinical skills laboratory to allow the postgraduate to become familiar with the rationale and clinical techniques used in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute. During the initial months, there is an introduction to the dental literature and to research methodology. The remainder of the programme follows a consistent pattern where six sessions each week are spent in the clinical care of patients. The remaining four sessions each week are dedicated to the academic and research programmes as well as personal study.

The clinical component is taught mainly on clinic where students undertake supervised management of patients. In the final year, the taught component of the course will be restricted to minimal use of lecture/seminar-format for the Systematic Review and Clinical Governance Project.

For Year 1 and Year 2 students, there will be a written assessment at the end of each term. Clinical biochemists are typically clinical scientists who work in hospital laboratories providing advice and interpretation of analytical results to other healthcare professionals such as clinicians, general practitioners and nurses.

They are also involved in the development of new analytical methods and improvement of clinical services, including quality assurance and audit. 

Through this MSc, you will gain a core knowledge and understanding of the normal physiology and pathophysiology of the major organs and endocrine systems, as well as more specialist areas such as paediatric biochemistry and drug monitoring.

A feature of this pathway is its clinical focus and its flexibility to support students who are reporting or planning to report in a range of imaging modalities and anatomical systems. By the end of the pathway, students will be able to apply their medical image reporting skills, of their chosen area of practice, within the clinical environment, ensuring that technically correct imaging reports are generated.

Typical areas of practice include reporting of the musculoskeletal system, chest, abdomen, cranial CT, and gastrointestinal systemStudents should be practicing in the area for which they intend to study, for example cranial CT students must have access to clinical CT facilities.

The University of Bradford has a long tradition in Medical Image Reporting education and this experience is utilised in the delivery of this pathway. Learning and assessment

The course sits within the MSc in Medical Imaging programme and the Faculty of Health Studies SSPRD framework, and upon successful completion of this MIR course students can continue their studies by registering for additional modules from the Medical Imaging or School module portfolio, to obtain a postgraduate Diploma or Masters Degree. This part-time pathway is designed to be studied over a one year period and consists of two 30 credit modules, commencing in early September with the Principles of Reporting module, followed in February with the Medical Image Reporting module.

A `block' attendance format is utilised as well as significant “directed” clinical study, with support from your host department and distance support from the academic team in the delivery of the clinical and academic learning. This is consistent with the other named pathways within the MSc in Medical Imaging programme and is popular with students who benefit academically from the concentrated period of time that can be devoted to their studies. There are two blocks of academic learning for the Principles of Reporting module and two blocks for the Medical Image Reporting module.

The module content and learning outcomes have informed the methods of delivery. Students will have opportunity to engage with learning through a range of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, group work, directed study, and, in the case of the clinical module, guided clinical learning.

This wide range of teaching approaches ensures that students can consolidate learning through a range of activities. In particular, small group learning and discussion of clinical cases promotes problem solving skills and peer education, skills necessary for clinical practitioners aspiring to work at an advanced level of practice. While away from the University, students can access course materials and engage in online discussions and learning activities through the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

A range of assessments are incorporated into the programme, but there is a requirement to complete a clinical audit of reports which must achieve 95% concurrence during audit, measured against the standard report of the host department.

Our three-year MSc (Clin) Orthodontics course combines the taught elements and research of an MSc degree with mandatory clinical training to enable you to develop the practical skills and knowledge you need to carry out contemporary orthodontic treatment techniques.

You will learn about the theory behind orthodontics through small group sessions, seminars, practical skills training, online learning and student-led enhancement sessions.

The clinical training part of the course involves attendance at clinics at the University and associated hospital trusts. During this time, you will provide treatment for approximately 150 carefully selected patients with severe malocclusions under direct supervision of consultant orthodontists.

You will also undergo training in research methods and biostatistics to help you plan and implement the research project that will form the basis of your dissertation, receiving guidance from highly experienced researchers in the process.

The research topic will examine an issue of relevance to your future work and will also provide the basis for a refereed publication.

Successfully completing this MSc (Clin) course will make you eligible to sit the Royal College of Surgeons exams for Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth).

Aims

The aim of the taught clinical component is to give you an understanding of the scientific basis of orthodontics. There is a particular emphasis on current thinking relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of patients.

Teaching and learning

Teaching will include tutorials, seminars and clinical demonstrations. You are encouraged to attend other relevant seminars in other clinical disciplines to gain a broad perspective of orthodontics.

Instruction will also be given in clinical and laboratory aspects of orthodontics. These will take the form of demonstrations, seminars and practical laboratory exercises.

Clinical training involves attendance in clinics at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester and affiliated hospitals including Lancaster, Bury, Blackburn, Hope, Tameside, Chester, Stockport, Wythenshawe and North Manchester General. Attendance at clinics is mandatory.

You will treat a personal cohort of at least 100 patients, their care being supervised by named specialists. These cases will include the most complex malocclusions together with orthognathic and hypodontia needs.

You will be instructed in the use of the Straightwire technique, temporary anchorage devises, Lingual appliances and aligner systems.

Participation in journal clubs, local and regional audit meetings and mandatory training as directed by your training hospital and supervising clinicians is expected.

One day each week is devoted to academic teaching and practical demonstrations with typodonts.

Coursework and assessment

  • Research Methods Unit: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor marked assignments and participation in specified online group activities.
  • Biostatistics Unit:  Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor marked assignments
  • Clinical Unit: The clinical component is assessed by a structured oral and written examinations, MCQ paper, and structured oral presentation.
  • Dissertation (Year 3) .

Course unit details

There are four main components to this course.

Research Methods Component (15 credits): Training in skills related to design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically-related research.

Biostatistics component (15 credits):  Training in skills related to data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically-related research.

Specialist Clinical Component: Gain an understanding of the scientific basis of orthodontics, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients.
