Clinical psychology focuses on the challenges faced by people with clinical, mental or physical (neuropsychological) health conditions. The role of the clinical psychologist is to work with these individuals and attempt to improve their quality of life. The Master’s degree in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology at Swansea is designed to equip students with an advanced understanding of the theory and practice of clinical psychology in healthcare settings. The primary purpose of the Abnormal and Clinical Psychology course is to allow students to gain knowledge and experience to enhance their suitability for professional clinical training (i.e. a three year DCl in Clinical Psychology programme at a BPS accredited training centre; see http://careers.bps.org.uk/area/clinical).
Entry onto a clinical psychology doctorate training programme is extremely competitive, with candidates usually expected to have acquired training and experience beyond degree level. We have a proven track record of helping our students progress towards clinical psychology training, as well as roles in a range of other clinical mental health-related occupations. Our MSc Abnormal and Clinical Psychology alumni have also secured NHS clinical based placements, providing valuable experience for those seeking to attain Assistant Clinical Psychologist positions.
The majority of our teaching is carried out by practicing and/or qualified Clinical Psychologists and related professionals, ensuring that students are learning from those with direct experience of professional challenges.
Course modules are assessed using a range of different approaches, including written examinations, essays, presentations and clinical case studies.
Study on the course can be undertaken either full time (1 year) or part time (2 years) basis, with teaching condensed into two weekdays to more easily accommodate part-time students and for relevant experience to be gained alongside the degree. Our MRes Experimental Cancer Medicine master's course will give nurses, doctors and clinical researchers the skills needed to work in early phase clinical studies.
You will learn how to master experimental cancer through a combination of traditional teaching and hands-on learning, spending a year as a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie while also taking four structured taught units.
The taught units will see you learn the details of designing and delivering Phase 1 clinical studies, understanding the pre-clinical data required before a clinical programme can commence, and how to optimise early clinical studies to provide evidence for progressing a promising drug into Phase II/III clinical testing.
Alongside the taught elements, you will be allocated to one or more clinical trials that are being conducted by The Christie experimental cancer medicine team. You will have a named trainer and be exposed to tasks required in the setup, delivery, interpretation and audit of a clinical study.
Nursing and physician students will be expected to participate in patient care, including new and follow-on patient clinics, treatment and care-giving episodes with patients.
For clinical trials coordinators, no direct patient contact is envisaged and duties will involve clinical trial setup, protocol amendments, database setup, data entry, costing and billing for clinical research.
You will be able to choose two aspects of your direct clinical trial research experience to write up for your two research projects in a dissertation format. This will give you the skills and knowledge required to critically report medical, scientific and clinically related sciences for peer review.
The primary purpose of the MRes in Experimental Cancer Medicine is to provide you with the opportunity to work within a premier UK Phase 1 cancer clinical trials unit and, through a mix of taught and experiential learning, master the discipline of Experimental Cancer Medicine.

Dr Natalie Cook is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie. She completed a PhD at Cambridge, investigating translational therapeutics and biomarker assay design in pancreatic cancer.
Professor Hughes is Chair of Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Strategic Director of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team at The Christie. He is a member of the research strategy group for Manchester Cancer Research Centre. He serves on the Biomarker evaluation review panel for CRUK grant applications.
Professor Hughes was previously Global Vice-President for early clinical development at AstraZeneca, overseeing around 100 Phase 0/1/2 clinical studies. He was previously Global Vice-President for early phase clinical oncology, having been involved in over 200 early phase clinical studies.
Dr Matthew Krebs is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Experimental Cancer Medicine at the University and Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie.
He has a PhD in circulating biomarkers and postdoctoral experience in single cell and ctDNA molecular profiling. He is Principal Investigator on a portfolio of phase 1 clinical trials and has research interests in clinical development of novel drugs for lung cancer and integration of biomarkers with experimental drug development.
Our course is structured around a 2:1 split between clinical-based research projects and taught elements respectively.
Taught course units will predominantly use lectures and workshops.
For the research projects, teaching and learning will take place through one-to-one mentoring from a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine team.
The clinical and academic experience of contributors to this course will provide you with an exceptional teaching and learning experience.
You will be assessed through oral presentations, single best answer exams, written reports and dissertation.

Our MSc in Clinical Biochemistry will give you a thorough grounding in a discipline that deals with the clinical analysis of body fluids and other biological material to aid the diagnosis, therapy and monitoring of diseases.
Clinical biochemists are typically clinical scientists who work in hospital laboratories providing advice and interpretation of analytical results to other healthcare professionals such as clinicians, general practitioners and nurses.
They are also involved in the development of new analytical methods and improvement of clinical services, including quality assurance and audit.

Professional teaching and learning
Most of the course is taught by NHS professionals working in the field of clinical biochemistry. You will also learn alongside students from a variety of health science backgrounds within pathology, helping you to integrate within a health service laboratory team in the future.
We use a range of teaching and learning methodologies throughout the course, including lectures, tutorials, workshops and interactive clinical case tutorials using mobile technology and iPads. Some of these will be delivered online.

This full-time, three-year Master's programme is designed for students from outside the European Union. It matches the institute's Specialty Training programme and is designed to enable students to meet training requirements in their home country.
The programme teaches a broad and deep understanding of endodontology, enabling students to apply appropriate clinical strategies from first principles. Mentored coaching specifically targets development of independent learning skills, with the aim of achieving long-term mastery.
Students undertake modules to the value of 360 credits. The third year of study is non-credit bearing and will include clinical training, didactic teaching and completion of clinical audit.
Year one: core modules (135 credits) and dissertation (30 credits). Year two: core modules (135 credits) and dissertation (60 credits).
Years one and two of the programme consist of 13 modules. The third year is non-credit bearing and teaching is delivered via clinical sessions, tutorials, and study groups.
During year three, all students are required to finalise case-log portfolio, complete an audit project and have an attendance rate of no less than 70%.
There are no optional modules for this programme.
All students undertake an independent research project in years one and two, which culminates in a dissertation of 13,000–15,000 words.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a structured lecture and seminar series, laboratory skills simulation courses, diagnostic clinics, supervised treatment of patients, clinical audit and a research project.

The programme prepares students for future professional evaluation of clinical/academic competence as a specialist. It is also a suitable springboard for pursuing academic, clinical or research careers in endodontics.
The graduates from this programme are prepared for the Royal Colleges’ professional examinations including the MRD (Endodontics) or MEndo which is one of the requirements of some overseas funding bodies and promotion boards.

This unique course will advance your skills and clinical development in general dental practice providing core skills in oral health, patient challenges and dealing with complex dental cases. The course has a heavily clinically-based nature and is the only course in the UK that provides an integrated postgraduate clinical education.
The course has been designed in close collaboration with General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) to provide flexible, tailored support and will equip you with advanced knowledge and skills to provide more complex care for patients.
Aimed at experienced dental surgeons seeking personal, professional and clinical progression the course will develop your problem solving skills within a patient-focused clinical setting.
Using specially designed Case-Based Learning, you'll be able to relate your learning to a simulated clinical case, thereby embedding your newfound knowledge in a meaningful and useful way.

Research dissertation (40 credits)
You will undertake an individual project and so deepen their understanding of the philosophy of research, ethics and ethical approval, good practice and research methodology. You will gain experience of working within research groups with clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
Clinical Audit Project (10 credits)
Discuss how you can improve clinical practice to make a positive difference to your patients. The project includes how to plan an audit, collect different types of data and how to compile, analyse and interpret data and implement change.
Multidisciplinary Management of the Complex Case (20 credits)
This module addresses multi-disciplinary issues such as diagnosis and management of atypical facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).
Dealing with Complexity and Challenge (50 credits)
This module develops more complex skills in challenging situations in a supported environment.

The aim of our Clinical Neuroscience MSc course is to give you a unique understanding of the principles underlying the clinical presentation and investigation of diseases affecting the brain. We place particular emphasis on the translation from basic science to clinical practice. Our course is suitable for students interested in neuroscience and its applications to neurological or psychiatric diseases.
Our Clinical Neuroscience course enables trainees in neurology, psychiatry and related health-care disciplines to study the anatomical, physiological and pathological basis of symptoms and signs of brain disorders. The DClinDent in Oral Surgery is a three-year, full-time programme which will allow the candidate to achieve specialist-level training in oral surgery, together with a taught professional Doctorate, preparing them for the Speciality examination of Membership in Oral Surgery (MOralSurg) of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (Tricollegiate Edinburgh, Glasgow, England) UK.
The DClinDent aims to provide doctoral level educational opportunities to enable students to develop, consolidate and enhance their range of academic and clinical competencies to enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in oral surgery.
This programme is for dental surgery graduates who wish to extend their knowledge, clinical practice experience and expertise in oral surgery.
The programme will give you theoretical and practical understanding of oral surgery and how it relates to other dental specialities.
The syllabus components are based on the core competencies for oral surgery training as set out by Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC) for Oral Surgery, The Faculty of Dental Surgery The Royal College of Surgeons of England (2014) :
For Year 1 and Year 2 students, there will be a written exam at the end of each term.
In addition to the above, at the end of Year 2, students will also have oral exams in June and in August/September.
Successful completion of the first two years of the programme will allow students to proceed to Year 3 of the programme. In Year 3, students will present the following:
a) a clinical governance project b) a systematic review of a topic related to Oral Surgery c) two fully documented patient case presentations d) two unseen (diagnostic) cases will also form part of this examination
The third year of the DClinDent programme will be structured over three semesters and during this time the student will be timetabled to four protected academic sessions each week with the remaining time dedicated to primarily independent clinical practice and inter-disciplinary patient management.
